RESULTS MWP HELPS BREAK SALES RECORDS It’s amazing where buyers come from and how they find property. A prime example is the Karmasea Penthouse at Alexandra Headland. The buyers are from Western Australia and, while visiting the region, they picked up a copy of My Weekly Preview. Upon reading the Karmasea advertisement they booked an inspection and travelled back to the Coast. Falling in love with the beautiful views and large apartment, they purchased the property for a record $1.425 million. In response to people saying that print media doesn’t work, I can say: ‘here is an example worth $1.425 million, so $1200 was a great investment for the sellers’. Our formula works and we’re not just all about numbers, we are about the quality of the result and the relationships. Ross Cattle Define Property Agents

OVER 50% OF THE ATTENDEES AT AUCTION SOURCED FROM MWP The value of print advertising as a cost-effective marketing medium is evident in the recent results from an auction at Farnwyn Court, Buderim. More than half of the attendees named MWP as a source of promotion for the property, and as an effective call to action for buyers to the open homes and the auction. For an agent, the ability to showcase a property without the distraction of the crowded online portals, and where exposure is not price specific or suburb specific, is great. MWP cannot be underestimated in engaging all buyers in the market. Lara Blackbeard Belle Property Buderim

MWP COMBINED WITH ONLINE MARKETING BRINGS RESULTS

The auction of a Minyama Island property attracted around 80 people - five registered bidders including an overseas participant.

The formula for maximum results has not changed – we have achieved consistent results for our vendors by combining MWP, Belle magazine and online marketing to achieve the highest prices in the shortest time frames.

Bidding started at $3 million and quickly escalated. Then bidding went up in the 10’s quickly, reaching $3.9 million. It was sold to a local couple, who intend to make it their family home. This property has had three different agents during a timeframe of about four years and was twice marketed in the Sunshine Coast Daily. This time the print media partner was MWP exclusively, and it was where the buyer came from. Steve Turner Platinum Properties

If you’re thinking about selling your home, now is the time – see below for recent success stories

50% OF BUYERS FOUND THE PROPERTY IN MWP When asked by vendors what the best method of advertising should be, I always recommend including adverts in My Weekly Preview. My latest property to go under contract is located in Eudlo and I utilised the opportunity to expose the property to even more buyers than could ever be achieved by online marketing alone. And, the numbers speak for themselves. With constant enquiry and well attended open homes, 50 per cent of buyers indicated the MWP advertisement as their source. When speaking with vendors I have complete confidence we are achieving the best possible outcome knowing all angles of marketing are covered. Justin Boyanton RealWay Buderim

52 GROUPS, TWO REGISTERED BIDDERS – SOLD IN 10 DAYS

MWP HELPS AGENT ACHIEVE RECORD PROPERTY SALES

I recently ran a four week campaign for a beautiful home in Buderim that borders the Mountain Creek school zone.

We had four weeks of advertising in MWP, which resulted in 52 groups through the property.

After having great success using double page spreads in My Weekly Preview to sell the iconic ‘Pink House’ in Mooloolaba, we subsequently used the publication again to assist in a similar result.

It resulted in 32 buyer inspections during the four weeks and three quality offers. We were able to put a sold sign up last week. The sellers are now firm believers that great marketing can achieve great results. Out of the 32 buyers that inspected, more than half came as a direct result of MWP advertising. It’s why I feel passionate about achieving the best results for my clients, and I know that by utilising the superior reach and audience of My Weekly Preview, we achieve this time and time again. Craig Porter Next Property Group

On auction day, there were two registered bidders and a sale within 10 days of the auction. It was a wonderful result for all. The vendor reported that Team Godwin marketed their home in a professional manner. They stated: “we cannot fault them with their advertising campaign both magazine and online, it exceeded all our expectations. “We must also note that the photographer did an amazing job in capturing the property’s potential.” Minka Jenkins Team Godwin

So far we have successfully sold two of the four proposed Tangalooma Residence apartments, fetching some of the highest prices ever achieved on the Sunshine Coast. The results so far have been outstanding and we look forward to continued success in the future Loren Wimhurst and Karen Jones Next Property Group

OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

I

have two boys and I can tell you they are more than enough for my parenting skills. So I am in awe of parents who have four or more kids – I just don’t know how they do it. In this week’s cover story, Candice Holznagel takes a close look at the number of children modern parents are having and what effect it has on their happiness and stress levels. Our profile this week is on Tony Kirwan, a former Queensland tradie who left his toolbox behind to move to Thailand and rescue children from sexual exploitation. His not-for-profit organisation, Destiny Rescue, has its Australian office on the Coast and is now spreading its influence worldwide. We also have a quick chat with Jeff Addison, a Palmwoods man who has spent years campaigning for our rail duplication, take a trip to a city in Florida that’s getting a hip new reputation and find out why winter is a smart time to sell your property. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

TWO-TRACK MIND

Rail campaigner Jeff Addison from Palmwoods spends an inordinate amount of time trying to improve the lives of Sunshine Coast commuters. FIRST JOB?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The Big Pineapple plant nursery. I was amazed at how many people asked for advice about their plants, given I was 14. All I knew was they needed water and sometimes fertiliser. To those whose one-metre-high shrub became a six-metre tree, I apologise.

Easy, rail duplication because every study I’ve read says it must happen. It’d boost our economy by $4.57 billion and has a benefit cost ratio of 2.28.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? The State Government election defeat in January 2015, because it resulted in the loss of our $532 million rail duplication after a relentless four-year campaign. It was a crushing blow. Happiest day was when it was announced on January 13, 2015. One day I’ll experience that joy again.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My lovely wife of 25 years, Joy and our four children. We share our home with four cavies and a pair of budgerigars that grace our verandah.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

Thirty-nine years. My parents came here from Sydney in 1977. They purchased a 77-acre farm in Hunchy with 50 head of cattle, two horses, chooks, ducks, two cats and one dog. I went from living at Collaroy Plateau suburbia to milking a house cow (Rosie) every day.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Beerburrum to Nambour rail duplication. I used the time on the train (oh, the irony) to study why things were bad. We suffered regular, prolonged delays. Through research and RTI requests, I discovered answers via ‘in-actioned’ government reports and learnt that Queensland Rail is severely limited by our archaic alignment, grade and single track. I decided to publicise the extraordinary facts that highlight our infrastructure neglect. As an aside, and to earn a little money, I’m a structural draftsman for consulting engineers. It takes my mind off the trains.

Display Homes Open n Saturday & Sunday 12.45pm -1.30pm or by appointment

Winning the new 5.24pm train to the Sunshine Coast in July 2011, after massive overcrowding created by timetable changes. I wrote to the Minister and insisted she view the situation. The next day she came down to the rail platform and four weeks later we had a new train. It was full from day one and I was told it was a $3 million fix.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I can enjoy the beauty of creation. Photography is a passion.

WHAT ARE YOU READING? North Coast Line Capacity Improvement Study, 255 pages of invaluable data on our rail line with windows into government thought, facts and penny-pinching options for our debilitated track.

FAVOURITE SONG? Voice of Truth by Casting Crowns. It reminds me never to give up, to get up after falling down and to honour truth.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? Life’s to be cherished.

NRL OR AFL? I don’t follow NRL or AFL (apology to Frank from Woombye who thinks the sun shines out of Collingwood). I was involved with soccer on the Palmwoods Warriors FC committee for the past six years.

COVER STORY

THE MAGIC NUMBER

How many children is the perfect number for families to have a happy and stress-free life? Candice Holznagel investigates.

David and Loli Conboy (centre) have six children between them, and they wouldn’t have it any other way

F

ive children under the age of six. It’s a figure that would make many parents shudder. But for Loli and David Conboy, it’s a reality – and the best thing they could have asked for. The Conboys are like the modern-day Brady Bunch family. When Loli met her future husband she brought three children to the relationship; David had two children, and together they went on to have their youngest, Georgia. “We were rent-a-crowd,’’ Loli laughs reflecting on earlier years. “When we arrived anywhere, eight of us arrived. “And the washing. The most difficult thing was the washing.’’ These days, the Conboy’s Currimundi home is somewhat quieter. The couple’s children, who now span in age from 25 to 35, have left the nest. Yet, with six grandchildren and the seventh on the way, the Conboy house is never empty for long. It’s something Loli wouldn’t change and she is a strong advocate for large families. “The benefits of a big family, or many children, are this: when you’ve got two kids they are very demanding of your time and resources. With six children that’s not possible,’’ she says. “They can’t all use your resources at once. They learn to compromise, they

12 My Weekly Preview | July 1, 2016

12.indd 1

learn to help each other as a family unit and they know that for material items they have got to wait their turn. “From that point of view, it turns out kids who are quite balanced and as adults, they understand you can’t have everything when you want it. “I think what happens is children from families of two, or even three… they’ve got parents who indulged them with everything they can and then those kids have to go out in the big wide world to fend for themselves. “They’ve got to realise that they’ve got to provide for themselves.’’ For many couples, bringing a child into the world is a decision not taken lightly. And the predictability of people to question when the second baby will be born is uncanny. Call it what you will – selfish or smart – these days it’s not uncommon for families to opt for a one-child family. This ‘one and done’ approach continues to spark interest and debate. In the 100 years from 1911 to 2011, Australia experienced a five-fold increase in its population, from 4.5 million to 22.3 million. The number of households increased more than eight-fold, from 894,000 to nearly 7,760,000, and yet household sizes in Australia have declined dramatically. The average household in 1911 contained 4.5 people, compared to 2.6

in 2011. The Australian Government defines a large family as one that has four children, but go back half a century, and it wasn’t uncommon for families to consist of six or eight children. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 Census, the proportion of couples without children has increased from 28 per cent in 1976 to 37.8 per cent. So, why are families shrinking? Experts say it can be attributed to a variety of factors. One of these is that women are

“Children used to be considered an asset. They were a benefit economically and functionally. . .” not only required to, but want to, work. Further research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that in 2011, 53 per cent of mothers with a child under the age of two, who had a job while pregnant, returned to the workforce. Living expenses have increased as has the average age of first-time mothers. In 2012, the median age of women who gave birth to their first child was 29 years.

Leading Australian family psychologist, author and a regular face on Channel Ten’s The Project, Dr Justin Coulson, says there are a number of factors contributing to the shrinking family syndrome. “Children used to be considered an asset,’’ he explains. “They were a benefit economically and functionally for families, going back 100 years or more. “Over the past 50, or 60 or 70 years family sizes have started to shrink. Parents are occupied outside the home a lot more.” Coulson says research shows children are actually pretty hard work – something any parent will attest to. “There are much bigger economic costs to have children; it costs a lot more to provide for a child now. “Grandparents born in the 1920s or ‘30s… it was not uncommon for them to leave school at the age of 10 or 12 and go off to work. Now they are at home until 26. “There are all the practical and financial considerations. There is an expectation in children and the amount we want to invest in them. It makes it too hard to invest in too many children. “People value different things and increasingly we’ve come to value certain lifestyle opportunities… and recognised that you can value your children and have one or two, or if you want to have three and live on the edge. Not having six or myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

eight kids doesn’t mean you don’t value family and relationships as much. Some would argue to have one means you value it more.’’ So, the question remains – which is better? A five-year study, conducted by psychology and social science lecturer Dr Bronwyn Harman of the Edith Cowan University in Western Australia and published in 2015, reveals that families with four or more children are happiest. The study looked at different family types and the topics of resilience, social support and self-esteem. “With large families, we think they have social support within the family,” Harman told ABC News. “The kids are never bored, they have someone to play with and they get independence quite early on. Parents accept that there is chaos in their lives but it does not negate the happiness they get from their families.’’ Coulson questions the study and says it contradicts decades of research proving that as we have more children, we become less happy. “There are two considerations here and the first is how we measure happiness,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview. “Traditionally, psychologists have looked at the absence of negative emotions… if you look at life with children, you can expect to have fairly significant negative emotions. “You’re up four times a night, they don’t know how to do homework, then they become teenagers and you start stressing. Kids create a whole lot of negative emotions in our lives. “They do bring great joy, but as a general rule, when you see parents walking through the shopping centre they aren’t smiling and saying ‘we love life’.” Coulson says when you measure happiness over 20 or 30 years, the outlook begins to change, as children tend to be the source of a parent’s greatest joys in life. “Time changes our recollection of child rearing years and children really do

make us happy. “From that point of view, I can see how an argument could be logically made that children can make us happier over time.” It’s an experience Coulson will undergo – he and wife Kylie are proud and happy parents to six daughters. He is the first to admit, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. “In my book 21 Days to a Happier Family, I start the book by describing an incident when my child was three and we had a newborn as well. I didn’t know how to deal with a stubborn, strong-willed toddler who was refusing to comply with anything we asked. “I was quite frankly a bad father. There was also really bad parenting – if I

“Never let other people and their opinions guide our decisions about how big our families should be. It’s a decision we make with the person we love the most in the world.’’ For Conboy, there is no swaying her belief that the more children a family has, the happier it will be. “I think the happiness factor comes from that they do help each other and there is no competition in the family. We are really close,’’ she says. “Growing up with a lot of children as teenagers, when they appreciate the size of their family and the family unit and the fun and everything we have, I think personally, and from what my kids have said, there’s less chance of them

It turns out kids who are quite balanced and as adults they understand you can’t have everything Loli Conboy with granddaughter Winslow

continued like that, I wouldn’t have had a relationship with my children. “As a result, I chose to change my career… (and) go to school and study psychology so I could be a better dad. I spent eight-and-a-half years trying to learn… what children can be.” As a hands-on father, there are plenty of things Coulson has discovered – one is that routine is vital for the family unit. Another is that large families can be wonderful. “I made a decision that the economics would never be the determining factor in how many kids we have. We are incredibly lucky to live in Australia. We had our children because we wanted to have them.

going off the rails, because it’s not just the parents they are disappointing, but also their siblings. “I personally think, it’s not that difficult to have that many children. Clothes have never been cheaper, you can buy good quality food at a good price. “Where I think the difficulty arises… is everyone having to have their own iPhones and computers. “It’s these social expectations that make it more expensive. “It boils down to what you think works for you. They don’t have to have six computers. “It’s okay to say no and okay to share things.’’

DR JUSTIN COULSON’S TIPS FOR A HAPPY FAMILY: • Be in the moment, be where your feet are • Have beautiful, enriching moments with your children • Create routine and structure • Understand the difference between discipline and punishment • Discipline can ruin a relationship – the definition of discipline comes from the route of disciple; to teach or guide or instruct, not to punish.

DID YOU KNOW? Women who become mothers do so typically at age 25 to 34 years. In 2012, the median age of women who gave birth to their first child was 29 years (ABS).

ARTS TO SHINE IN HORIZON FESTIVAL The all new Horizon Sunshine Coast festival will take arts and culture to the streets during 10 days from September 2 to 11. Announced last week, the new festival will include artistic events, exhibitions, visual arts, film, street art, poetry, music, Madeleine Kennedy and Tim Dwyer dance, new media and workshops at various places throughout the region. “Horizon was created to showcase our talented artistic community and provide a platform for them to share their talents with the Sunshine Coast community and visitors,’’ councillor Tim Dwyer says.

BUSINESS AWARDS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED The finalists for the 2016 Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards are set to be announced tomorrow, July 2. Now in its 17th year, the awards, which attracted 175 nominees this year, recognise local women SCBWN Awards 2015 winners working in business with categories including Outstanding, Micro Small, Professional, Young and Sustainable Business Woman of the Year. The winners will be announced at a gala event on August 13 at The Events Centre, Caloundra. For tickets to the gala, visit scbwn.org.au.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN

The University of the Sunshine Coast will welcome more than 2000 athletes when it stages the Northern University Games from July 3 to 7. Tertiary students from Queensland and northern New South Wales will vie for honours in 17 sports including baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, football and surfing. “Regional university sporting events provide student athletes with the opportunity to pursue a dual education and sport pathway, which results in both tertiary qualifications and sport participation at all levels of sport across Australia,” Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp says.

206,000

Three million Queenslanders – including more than 206,000 residents living in the Fisher and Fairfax electorates – will take to the polls this Saturday July 2, to vote in what will be the first double dissolution election in almost 30 years. As of Monday, according to Newspoll, the Coalition was ahead of Labor on a two-party preferred basis leading in to the federal election. AAP reported Labor will go into the election without a position on the Turnbull government’s planned changes to superannuation tax concessions, instead opting to wait to consult the sector if it wins government.

PADDLING FOR A PURPOSE Former Noosa resident and New South Wales lifeguard and triathlete Juliana Bahr-Thomson is paddling to the Coast on a 1000-kilometre journey to raise awareness for domestic violence and environmental conservation. Bahr-Thomson found the urge to up the stakes when she completed a 180-kilometre solo paddle ride from Newcastle to Bondi Beach over three and a half days in 2015. As a former victim of domestic violence, she hopes to raise $50,000 for domestic violence charity White Ribbon, and also for the ocean conservation not-for-profit Surfrider Foundation. REVIEW LIBRARY UPGRADE

COMMUNITY GROUPS THRILLED WITH GRANTS Sunshine Coast Council has dished out more than $101,000 in funding for more than 70 local community projects thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s May 2016 Minor Community Grants round. The funding will support 72 projects including Hinterland Bush Links, Roving Restorers volunteers whose vision is to ensure the longterm conservation of all native plants and animals in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. With the help of a $1,960 community grant, the group will develop an equipment kit for their dedicated group of Roving Restorers volunteers.

World cycling legend Mark Cavendish is likely to be among a list of athletes from the Isle of Man who will base themselves on the Sunshine Coast to fine tune preparations for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. A team of 32 athletes plus officials from the Celtic nation will base themselves at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort for the final week before the Games begin on the Gold Coast on March 25. Secretary General of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association Tonia Lushington says the Sunshine Coast ticked all the boxes as a pre-games destination.

Kawana Library has reopened following a $230,000 refurbishment, which boasts new murals, improved seating and a children’s pirate ship. Councillor John Connolly says the changes reflect the council’s commitment to investing in the library service to ensure it remains relevant and responsive. “One of the elements incorporated into the refurbishment is the ribbon seating, which winds around the perimeter of the library. There are many casual and comfy seating areas for people to enjoy while reading newspapers, a favourite book, using the free Wi-Fi and much more.”

TURTLE TRIUMPH More than 6300 turtle hatchlings have made their way to the ocean to begin their long and treacherous journey through the sea. Environment portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says the Coast is home to around five per cent of the national loggerhead turtle population. “This season, between November 2015 and May 2016, 143 registered volunteers contributed an estimated 4766 hours patrolling our beaches early mornings and late afternoons. From 66 nests and 116 nesting events, around 6400 turtle hatchlings emerged between Caloundra and Point Cartwright.”

$12.6 BILLION Research indicates that one in four young Australians has a mental health condition, and our youth identify mental health as a more important issue than the environment, education and employment. This week, Sunshine Coast Council has supported the Thinking Out Loud mental health conference at Mooloolaba TAFE campus. Corporate speaker Colin James presented at the event and facilitated workshops to delve into the complex issue. Councillor Steve Robinson says depression in the workplace costs Australia $12.6 billion per year. “From a productivity and employment perspective alone, we need to find ways to improve our understanding and treatment of mental illness.’’

TRAVEL

FUN IN FLORIDA Craft beer, bike rides and cool hangouts are giving Tampa, Florida a new hipster vibe. By Sam Wylie-Harris

I

’m always on the hunt for unusual statement jewellery, so when a striking silver choker featuring a replica shark’s tooth catches my eye, I’m tempted to make a purchase. It’s not the sort of thing I’d expect to find on a shopping spree in Florida. But at the Oxford Exchange, a fashionable restaurant, coffee house and shopping emporium in Tampa, all sorts of unusual wares are on offer. Housed in a renovated 100-year-old brick building and designed in the style of a British gentleman’s club, it’s the in-place for daytime dining and typifies Tampa’s booming bar and restaurant scene. All across this city on the west coast of Florida, entrepreneurs are breathing new life into abandoned properties. Florida is one of the fastest growing states for craft beer and Tampa Bay recently ranked second place as America’s Best Beer Town in a poll by USA Today. Some of the best brews can be found at hipster restaurant and bar Ulele, which sits on the banks of the Hillsborough River and has its own craft brewery. A former

public water pump house, it opened two years ago after a $US5 million ($6.7 million) restoration. A cultural and business hub for the Gulf Coast of Florida, Tampa Bay is built on a grid system that’s easy to navigate on two wheels. Visitors can hire bikes with GPS from Coast Bike Share (coastbikeshare.com). I’m a bit wobbly to begin with, but my confidence grows as I pedal along the Bayshore Boulevard, enjoying views of the city skyline and fleets of boats cruising along the glistening waters of Hillsborough Bay. We slowly wind our way back to Hyde Park Village, five kilometres from downtown and known locally as SoHo. The leafy streets are lined with 1920s-style bungalows with white picket fences. SoHo (or South Howard Avenue) is rapidly becoming one of South Tampa’s hottest neighbourhoods, with hip hangouts and high-end boutiques, all largely undiscovered by tourists. *The writer was a guest of British Airways Holidays. – AAP

riorities differ at various stages of life. Whether your focus is health, fitness, career, family, or anything really, the order in which you place your priorities and the actions you take will be the area that develops most rapidly. How you choose to prioritise the relationships and choices in your life can create fulfilling lifelong experiences, and a sense of achievement when reaching your goals. Prioritising relationships provides meaning, connection, love, and emotional growth and brings a whole new dimension to the sense of happiness you can experience, increasing naturally your levels of dopamine and serotonin, balancing hormones, and increasing energy. The physical benefits to your health produced by fostering better relationships can be enormous. The more present, focused, and connected

you choose to be with your children, your partner, parents or friends, the more you will get back from them, developing deeper, more satisfying relationships. Choosing to hold on to a relationship, or not addressing issues where others do not prioritise you in their lives can often lead to feelings of stress or feeling undervalued, creating adverse effects on your health and happiness. Your time is precious. Make your choices wisely, and make them count, prioritise and value those important to you, be with those who value you, and watch your relationships and your sense of life satisfaction flourish. Only you can make the choice to live the life you deserve.

PROFILE

TO THE RESCUE

As the founder of global not-for-profit organisation Destiny Rescue, Tony Kirwan is a true Australian hero. Words: Leigh Robshaw

F

ifteen years ago, Tony Kirwan was an ordinary bloke looking for a way to make a positive difference in the world. Today, he’s a hero to thousands of children saved by his organisation, Destiny Rescue, from a hellish life of sex slavery. The 45-year-old founded Destiny Rescue in 2001 and it has since grown into an international organisation with hundreds of staff and volunteers in nine nations, all working towards the same goal of seeing child sexual exploitation end in our lifetimes. Kirwan estimates Destiny Rescue has rescued 1550 children since counting began in 2011; his mission is to rescue 100,000 by 2020. He has always felt it was God’s plan for him to do this work and says he only need think of his daughters to summon the courage to put himself on the frontline. “I’ve got three gorgeous girls of my own, who are 20, 18 and 14,” Kirwan says. “I can very easily imagine this kid sitting next to me is one of my daughters. The reality is, a good percentage of the time the parents are aware of what’s happening with their children because they’re getting money for it. So their parents aren’t going to be coming in to get them out.” While Kirwan has lived in Thailand, where Destiny Rescue’s international office is based, since 2004, he has strong ties to the Sunshine Coast. His parents and sister live here and the Australian head office is in Warana. From humble beginnings, Destiny Rescue now runs operations in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, India, Philippines and the Dominican Republic, providing a new chance at a happy life for countless children each week. “In the early days, we had a 100 per cent failure rate,” says Kirwan. “When we identified a child, we’d say we can disappear tonight and get you back into school, or whatever their dream was. But not one of them trusted what we were saying was real. We had to go back and meet that child a few times in that brothel and gain their trust.” Kirwan says it’s an almost paralysing decision for the children, because they are often supporting their parents financially through their sex work. “The real challenge for me is when you’ve got them to

that point of trust and you give them that offer of escape and you’re hanging on those words ‘hell yeah, get me out of here’, almost every time they say they need to process it. You get this sinking feeling that this kid is going to get abused multiple times before they decide to trust us. As a dad, you want to throw them over your shoulder and just run for the door, but you can’t. The daunting fact is, if you look at the size of the problem, it feels overwhelming and impossible. The only way we can all move forward is by focusing on the one in front of us. “In Thailand, every brothel is an open area, like a bar setting with heaps of customers and heaps of girls sitting with you. Some of the places have rooms on site that they abuse the girls in, but with the majority of them, people take them away to their hotel room. If you could imagine what they could do, I’ve seen it done.”

Destiny Rescue’s target group is under 18 and while the majority of girls working in Thailand are 16 or 17, they’ve rescued children as young as four. “If you had to stereotype the customers, I’d say most of them are older guys, 55 and up, balding with huge beer bellies. Sometimes there’ll be couples come in and choose a girl to take home, but that’s a small percentage. “Being totally honest it makes me very angry,” he says. “I can feel my blood boiling at times, you want to hurt them and I know that’s probably not a good Christian attitude. It’s a challenge. You know you’re in these places role playing as a customer and if you blow your cover, you’re burnt for that brothel and the brothels surrounding that place, so you have to take a long-term view.” Kirwan has received death threats, dealt with corrupt cops and witnessed horrors he’ll never forget, but he has a 70 per cent success rate in rescuing children and that keeps him going. As president of what is now an internationally respected organisation, he has developed great insight into the nature of leadership, which he’ll share with the Sunshine Coast as guest speaker at a Caloundra Chamber of Commerce event on July 15. “Every time I talk it’s basically just telling stories about what I’ve seen,” he says. “ You’ll get to hear the ugly, and hopefully be inspired to be part of the solution. You’ll also hear about the positive side as well, once the girls are out and everything is significantly better. “I understand that we all get motivated by different things but if we can picture one of our daughters or sisters or nieces, just think what you would be willing to do to get them out. I know when you’re talking about a kid on the other side of the world, it’s not the same, but my biggest challenge is saying we can all do something. Even if it’s small, if everybody chose to do something, it would be enough to fix the problem.”

Tony Kirwan is the guest speaker at the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Better Business Breakfast on Friday July15. For more information visit caloundrachamber.com.au/businessbreakfast10.

MY OPINION

KEEPING ‘EM HONEST

ACKERMAN’S LEGACY

The majority of Australians believe we need a national corruption watchdog but don’t hold your breath, says Alex McKean.

James Ackerman’s family has created something great out of grief, writes Sami Muirhead.

N

o mother should ever have to bury their son. I had a sobering chat with Sonya Ackerman about the amazing legacy left by her son, who lost his life one year ago after a tackle went wrong while he was playing football for the Sunshine Coast Falcons. James Ackerman was only 25. His family has launched a not-for-profit protective headgear in the hope it will save thousands of lives. Sonya is passionate about player safety. “Player welfare needs to be bought to the forefront,” Sonya says. “In New South Wales it is compulsory from under 7 players to under 10 players to wear headgear. Our kids’ safety is a priority. “We, as a family, need to keep James’ legacy alive for James’ children, Ollie and Milly. Ollie starts school next year and we know kids will say things to him about not having a daddy. How good would it be if a little boy or girl says to him: ‘your daddy is on my headgear’?” Sonya added. The headgear was designed by James’ brother and reflects many facets of the popular local. It is blue. That was James’ favourite colour, like so many other sons. The headgear carries James’ playing number 8, has his handprint on it, as well as the Donate Life symbol. Sonya explained how many lives James saved through organ donation.

“A lady received a liver/kidney and a young gentleman received a pancreas/ kidney. Two people also received sight restoration. On top of that, two babies have benefited from James’ heart valves. “Many more will have a better quality of life through James’s skin and tissue donation.’’ It is a strange conversation to be having with a mum about her son. But this mum has grit and a vision to promote organ donation in Australia. On average, 1600 people are on the transplant waiting list at any one time. About 50 of those waiting are children and one person dies every week waiting. Only the Organ Donor Register allows you to register your consent to donate. “James was unable to donate his lungs due to them being too large,” Sonya adds. The Ackerman family is determined to make something good come of something so tragic. Most of us would be rocking in a corner. I have young children a similar age to Milly and Ollie. I cannot imagine them not having their dad. But these awesome Aussies are driven to give back to the community despite their heartache. The headgear will be available in time for next year’s rugby league season and will be sold at Rebel Sports and Amart Sports from January. I don’t know if my two young boys will play footy, but if they do they will be wearing James Ackerman’s headgear.

S

ome very interesting results have come out of the ABC Vote Compass data in the past few weeks. On June 6, 2016 it was reported that out of more than 230,000 responses, more than 82 per cent were in favour of introducing a federal anticorruption watchdog similar to the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption. Vote Compass is promoted as a democratic engagement tool which allows people to see how their views compare to the policies of the parties. Readers who are familiar with the website will know that, after answering a series of questions, your overall position in respect of the issues covered in the survey is plotted on a graph, allowing a comparison with the positions occupied by the LNP, Labor and the Greens. It is tempting to speculate as to how many of the 82 per cent who agreed with the introduction of a federal corruption watchdog were plotted in the region of the LNP and Labor. While this data has not been made available at the time of writing, what is clear is the opposition of each of the major parties to that policy. A union motion at the ALP National Conference in July 2015 to introduce such a body was withdrawn at the last minute. Shadow Special Minister of State, Gary Gray says there were, “multiple levels of integrity and assurance in place at the

federal level which already work”. Similarly, in the lead-up to the federal election, the LNP rejected attempts by the cross-benchers in the Senate to widen the powers of a proposed reintroduction of the Australian Building and Construction Commission and deliver something closer to a federal ICAC. While the Greens have sought on a number of occasions to introduce a federal anti-corruption watchdog, on each occasion the move has either been rejected out of hand, or has been bogged down in committee processes. If the views of the 82 per cent of Vote Compass respondents are replicated across the country, it is disappointing that neither of the major parties is willing to respect the views of such a significant majority of the electorate. Perhaps the best prospect for the introduction of a federal corruption watchdog is an outcome where the balance of power in the new Senate will be held by Independents, some of whom have been vocal in their support for a federal corruption watchdog. Absent that outcome, or a major corruption scandal followed by a fearless and rigorous inquiry of the type which produced corruption watchdogs in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia, the will of the people appears unlikely to be reflected in real change.

Alex McKean is a barrister and academic who is currently researching in the area of integrity commissions

CHANGING THE WAY YOU INVEST Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

T

he current phase in the global economic cycle could persist for some time given the underlying imbalances contributing to it, including: • Lacklustre corporate profitability • Chinese overcapacity contributing to disinflation • The diminishing returns to monetary easing • The lack of government supported structural initiatives. Monetary policy has been a driving force behind stock market returns as investors flee diminishing returns on cash. This has been exacerbated with some major central banks, including the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank, introducing negative interest rates – one-third of sovereign

bonds trade globally are now priced with a negative yield. The US Federal Reserve meanwhile is trying to balance economic growth against normalising monetary policy, which will mean the tightening cycle is likely to be more gradual than in previous cycles. With this backdrop, we expect interest rates will remain low for a considerable period of time. Domestically, growth prospects rest on traded sheltered service sectors such as education and tourism. Indicators hint at a peak in residential construction, which then joins the unwinding in resources investment. Add to this a consumer softened by feeble wage growth and high household debt. All of this points to reduced expectations for growth and inflation. These factors lead us to believe that the Reserve Bank will need to cut the cash rate further, which in turn will reduce the value of the Australian dollar. In this environment, it is important to identify investible themes that can produce above average returns. So where

to invest? We believe there are certain themes to target in the coming years, specifically in investments that profit from a weaker Aussie dollar such as USD, Orora and Westfield and tourism stocks. Also, stocks that benefit from lower interest rates such as infrastructure stocks and hybrids and in structural changes such as the ageing population, superannuation, China’s transformation and technology stocks and the health and wellness industry.

It is not a case of set and forget anymore, and we strongly suggest you consult with your adviser to discuss taking advantage of these opportunities. PRESENTS

A LEADER’S JOURNEY

TUESDAY 12TH JULY Annual General Meeting PLUS SPEED NETWORKING event NETWORKING – WE HATE IT – WE LOVE IT – WE HATE IT. The thing we hate the most about networking, if we are honest, is that effectively we have to go up to people we don’t know and say hi, it puts us outside of our comfort zone, and let’s face it, that makes some of us a little, and some of us very, uncomfortable. Trust us we know, and we agree. That’s why for our JULY AGM we will be having a talk on effective networking followed by a super fun SPEED NETWORKING EVENT. So you will get to meet almost everyone in the room. How much fun, we can’t wait.

Join Destiny Rescue founder and Global CEO Tony Kirwan as he discusses his journey from the Sunshine Coast to operating a globally-engaged organisation (as featured on Sunday Night & The Project). Tony will highlight how commitment to your passion, corporate social responsibility and constant learning have shaped his development and growth as a leader and will discuss how you learn to lead.

Our MC for the SPEED NETWORKING is Paul Barrs, Paul is a professional speaker, he has spoken on over 500 stages around the world, including the United Nations in New York, he is a business manager and digital marketing specialist. Paul will be sharing his years of knowledge on effective business networking – even for the faint hearted – and how to find new friends and new customers every time you step out the door. It would have to be a curry of some kind, particularly south-east Asian. What’s your favourite produce that you source locally and why? What task do you love being able to hand over to you apprentice and why? The deep-fry clean. It’s the worst job in the kitchen. We all had to do it and even now have to do it at times, but gee its good when it’s done. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? Inspiration must come first, without that there is no love or creativity, so the right work environment is a must. You just can’t sit in a dingy office and sit and write a menu. Walk around the beach, backyard… and take your time. The ideas will come. Once you have those ideas, start matching. Do those flavours match? Do they clash? Basics, I find, always work. It just has to be executed well. In my 22 years of experience in the United Kingdom and Australia, that’s how writing menus have worked for me.

When I was at boarding school there was a long time between dinner and lights out. I was a growing lad, and the only way to supplement this was to purchase contraband toasted cheese sandwiches from the dorm prefects – that was heaven. So, it would have to be a good toasted cheese sandwich. I have, and I always will, love them. Piece of equipment you can’t live without? A good old stainless steel mixing bowl. From the ashes of now-defunct indie orchestra Inland Sea comes Brisbane rock outfit DEEDS. Four years on from his prior band’s separation, frontman Beau Lindsay found a way to get the band back together, rounding up three of his former bandmates with new songs and a new vision. Launching their debut album Exile last month, the band is now following with a launch tour, which will bring them to the Sunshine Coast. “Exile is purely about living in a world filled with other people’s expectations of you,’’ Lindsay says. “It’s a constant struggle with a fake idea of expression and self-absorbed motives. “Every now and then you just need to escape and regroup to have a better understanding of who you are.’’

exus’ turbo engine has achieved notable sales growth in 2016 with a string of record breaking results. Variants featuring the brand’s first turbo powerplant set a new sales benchmark in May, accounting for nearly 45 per cent of all Lexus sales. RX, GS and RC turbo models also recorded their best individual month on sale in May. The result updates the previous best month of April, when turbo sales accounted for more than 43 per cent of total Lexus vehicle sales volume. Sales of Lexus turbo models have increased by 33 per cent since January 2016. Lexus Australia chief executive officer Peter McGregor lauded the result as confirmation of the turbo engine’s wide appeal. “The Lexus turbo powerplant is a superb piece of engineering that excels in its versatility, delivering excellent output, response, efficiency and refinement no matter which Lexus vehicle it powers and the way it drives the wheels,” he says. “Engineers spent years honing this

engine for diverse uses and they have delivered a thoroughly modern solution.’’ Lexus’ two-litre twin-scroll fourcylinder turbo engine was developed in-house, incorporating world first integration of turbo technology into its cylinder head design. It was released in the first quarter of 2015 in the Lexus NX SUV and has since been fitted to the IS and GS sedan ranges, as well as the RC coupe and the best-selling RX SUV. It is mated to a six-speed automatic

transmission in the NX and RX SUV models. Eight-speed transmission is featured in the sedans and coupe versions, with power delivery algorithms tuned to each model. The turbo develops 175kW in the SUVs and 180kW in the sedans and coupes to best serve the requirements of the vehicle. Fuel economy varies from 7.3L/100km in the RC coupe to 8.1L/100km in the RX SUV, depending on vehicle weight and specifications.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

I

t’s the beginning of winter and you’ve considered selling your house, but all of the cardigan clad armchair experts are sipping the hot chocolate that sits atop their stable table, and saying: “Wait until spring… nothing ever sells in winter.” Perhaps a little dramatic, but you understand the flawed concept that we’ve been dealt by various, and dubiously qualified, experts. It’s hard to know exactly where this mythical notion originated but likely it was propagated in the colder southern states. Bitterly cold winters with excessive rainfall and snow are simply not our reality on the Sunshine Coast. The necessity to light the fire and don the wellies is rare. Every year, we see many southern buyers and investors migrate to our cherished neck of the woods to escape their harsh climatic conditions. One only has to look at areas like Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba to identify the numerous southerners who have chosen to spend their hard earned cash in an exceptional location. Every day, new and undiscriminating buyers wake up and hit the market with fresh eyes, a My Weekly Preview stashed under their arm, and a determination to seek out

the best property for their scenario. This buyer activity is not restricted to spring and summer, so why on earth would we consider the plausibility of hesitating to sell in winter when buyers are cashed up and keen? Two essential things for any property sale are competition and emotion. We need as many interested parties to connect on an emotional level with the home and then compete by either bidding to their maximum at auction, or putting their best foot forward on a price marketed property. While winter may reduce spectators, the savvy buyers will be looking to make their purchases year-round. With quality buyers in the market ready to purchase, and the quantity of suitable homes lower than expected, the opportunity to sell at a healthy level is possible. In our market, winter will favour the seller. This is a classic supply and demand equation. If you can market your home in a time when there is less competition, you are likely to sell in a shorter time frame and possibly at a better price. My advice to avoid the winter property blues is to work with a quality agent who specialises in your area. A great agent will have a list of qualified buyers regardless of the season. Utilise the auction process to get the best from a competitive situation and reap the rewards. Auctioneer David Holmes is the owner of Metro Auctions.

LIVING ON THE EDGE With only five properties still up for grabs, interested buyers need to move fast to snap up a piece of Pelican Waters’ development, The Edge Residences. With water access, views, modern design and a prestigious location, the terrace homes are being marketed as a luxurious option for those wanting to downsize. Property developer Brad Teys says there are many benefits to downsizing, and there is no need to compromise on comfort and luxury. “This is a gated community with million dollar homes nearby, and within The Edge. It will hold you in good stead for the future,’’ he says. “For a lifestyle perspective, and banking for the future, Pelican Waters is close to everything. Location is a plus.’’ Situated alongside the future Pelican Waters town centre and the existing shopping centre and medical precinct, the development is within walking distance to Pumicestone Passage.

SNAPSHOT The Edge Residences feature internal courtyards, air-conditioning, square set high ceilings, entertainer’s kitchen featuring stone benchtop and European appliances. Prices start at $585,000 for the house and land. Visit theedgeresidences.com.au

RETIREMENT LIVING MADE EASY

T

he Sunshine Coast is home to more than 80 retirement villages and each one is different. Kawana is the epicentre of retirement living with around 40 villages within a 20 kilometre radius. Many large operators are moving into the area to build more, which is creating an abundance of choice for the retiree. The problem is knowing which ones offer the best value and quality. Emma Plasier set up Shine Retirement last year to assist retirees in understanding the costs, contracts and processes when buying a unit in a village. Shine Retirement is the only free service that has information on every village on the Coast. At a time when relocating is overwhelming, Shine Retirement supports the retiree by helping them choose the right village and assisting through the whole process. Many retirees don’t know the difference between retirement villages and manufactured home parks and so, Shine Retirement helps them to make supported and informed decisions about the various choices. There are many villages that put their

Shine Retirement’s Emma Plasier with Nico and Marianne Hodgett

clients first, but sometimes it can be difficult for a retiree to know which ones are the best for them. Unfortunately, many operators are driven by targets. However, times are changing with the State Government seriously looking at making changes affecting an operator’s disclosure to residents. The State Government is currently reviewing the Retirement Villages and Manufactured Homes Acts which could change the future of the industry. And, with companies such as Shine Retirement offering supportive advice, the future is looking positive for those local residents wanting to move into retirement living. Shine Retirement is the only company on the Sunshine Coast that understands what these changes mean for future residents and the opportunities they could bring. If you wish to know more, or need help finding the right retirement village, contact the team. Contact Emma at Shine Retirement on 5474 9572 or email: info@shineretirement.com.au.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Winter is finally here but to be honest I was surfing in board shorts on Sunday, and it was still not uncomfortable…. so harden up. Actually, my wetsuit fell part so I had no choice, but still it was not cold. July and August are normally the time to tell. I remember 30 years ago a mate who was a lifeguard rigged up an IRB and we used it to go surf a pumping Old Woman Island. It was big. I had no wetsuit, it was overcast and drizzling and I was so cold. These monster sets would roll through and I was simply too cold to go after them. Surfing Old Woman at eight foot, by yourself, is unheard of these days… my missed opportunity! There are a few small waves around, so enjoy.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Tailor are chasing bait in the deeper channel from the Motorway Bridge to the cod hole with some schools moving into the shallows on the high tide. Bream are also moving up river with squid, prawns and fowl gut the bait to use along Bradman Avenue. Flathead can be caught throughout the Maroochy River using whitebait and lures. SURF: Holes are showing up from Marcoola to Pincushion with tailor and sea bream moving in on the rising tides. Your best bet for catching these species is to use WA pilchards. Sand whiting and dart can be found along Maroochy Beach with pippies and sand worms returning quality fish. OFFSHORE: The close-in reefs of Murphy’s, the Gneerings and the Blinker are firing for mixed reef fish including coral trout, using pillies and squid. If you are anchoring on a spot, heavy berleying will produce better quality results. Tailor are working bait just beyond the breakers, so it’s worth a troll with pilchard sized lures from Marcoola to Pincushion. FRESHWATER: Local dams are returning small bass on live shrimps and medium diving lures. Cooler conditions are making the middle of the day the best time for trolling lures, however, bait will return better quality. Water levels are high with the bigger impoundments of Somerset and Joh’s Dam worth a deep troll for golden perch and bass.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Monday’s new moon shines a spotlight on money matters. If your finances are in a mess, then you need to develop some fiscal skills. Creativity and compassion are high on Tuesday, but there’s also a tendency to scatter your energy all over the place.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Expect power-plays in close relationships on Thursday. If you try to do too much, then you’ll just end up feeling super stressed. So take things one step at a time. Sometime between Friday and Sunday, Jupiter sends a lucky break via social media.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Stop wasting time trying to control people and situations (especially on Thursday and Friday). Wonderful opportunities are around – but they’re not immediately obvious. They are hidden in unexpected places, waiting for you to discover them.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] This week Jupiter and Mars encourage you to stop worrying and start doing. Aim to be more proactive about appreciating [and protecting] your neighbourhood and local environment. If you network with like-minded souls, then you really can achieve a lot.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Librans are clever and capable but are you confident enough for big time success? The new moon’s in your career zone, so it’s time to assume a leadership role. Venus and Mars promise romance, friendship and fun on Wednesday so it’s a terrific time to socialise.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The new moon boosts your brain power so it’s time to read or study something new. Planning your next weekend escape is also a good idea. But Thursday and Friday will be difficult days, when you have a desire to persuade others to do what YOU want them to do.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Those around you can expect some boisterous behaviour from yours truly so try to burn off excess fiery energy via physical activities and vigorous outdoor adventures. From Friday through until Sunday, Lady Luck smiles benevolently on you, so make sure you capitalise on it.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] With peacemaker Venus [plus the sun, Moon and Mercury] visiting your partnership zone, it’s a wonderful week to improve your relationships or smooth over problems with a colleague. Thursday looks tricky though, as compulsions and obsessions complicate communication.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] It’s a wonderful week for work matters, as you use a combination of charm and chutzpah to get what you want … in the most delightful way. Don’t expect perfect results though. Sometimes mistakes lead you off in surprising new directions.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] DO you underestimate your creative talents? This week, Mercury forms a fabulous aspect with your ruler Neptune, so make sure you express your creativity for all the world to see. Don’t be shy! As fellow Piscean Steve Jobs said “Creativity is just connecting things.”

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Busy bulls need to balance being cautious with being adventurous (which is an interesting juggle!) There are some new faces in your neighbourhood that are waiting to meet you. So it’s time to ricochet out of your usual routine, and get out and about.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] This week the pull between work responsibilities and home duties may leave you feeling overwhelmed. The New Moon signals that it’s time for a brand new domestic chapter. Some rams will renovate, move house, or start afresh with a stressed relative.

THE LAST WORD

COLD COMFORT Richard O’Leary discovers a fine line between pleasure and pain during his morning shower.

I

saw my goldfish breakdance – only once and for about 20 seconds. So the joke goes. I feel I have a bit in common with that poor creature because each morning this week, I’ve had a few moments when I’ve felt like that goldfish gasping for air. My problem started when I read a New York Times article about this new way to get going in the morning – have a cold shower. The journalist Carl Richards suggested a number of benefits of cold water therapy, including weight loss stimulation, increased circulation, stress reduction, and even the possibility it could be an antidepressant. But for him, the biggest attraction was that it was a really hard thing to do. Too hard for me obviously, because I read the story ages ago, but for some reason – common sense, common courtesy (screaming at 6am isn’t really

fair on the rest of the household) or most probably fear – I hadn’t done it. But the thought has been circling in the deeper recesses of my brain like a goldfish in a bowl, not doing a hell of a lot, hiding behind some plastic replicas of seaweed. But really, it was just waiting for

“I’ve had a few moments where I’ve felt like that goldfish” a weak moment to make its move. And that moment came a few days ago. I can’t explain it. I’d just about finished my shower, which involves plenty of hot water running for too long (especially when I’m on tank water), when I was sideswiped by a desire to test this cold shower theory. Without thinking, because who in their right mind would do it after thinking

about it, I turned the tap from hot to cold. There was a delicious delay of about half a second while the pipes caught up with my madness, and then my impersonation of a dying goldfish began. Gasping for breath, I counted aloud. The first ten seconds were the worst: your lungs close up, your body tries to push away from the source of the discomfort and the brain demands a decision. I’m proud to say I stayed under that nozzle for another 20 seconds. I grabbed a towel, wondering what the hell I was thinking, when a great sense of peace came over me. I felt so alive and positively warm – I suspect because my body was numb. But nonetheless it was a great rush. I’m now up to a minute, which is supposed to be about as long as a goldfish’s memory – so they say.
