Efforts Underway to Restore Church Steeped in History

BY JACLYN ROSE The Rocky Methodist Church was constructed in 1912 and has stood as a pillar to the Rocky Community ever since. The first building burned down, but it was rebuilt and was renovated last by a church youth group out of Hot Springs, Arkansas in the 1970s. The Church Building sits beside the Rocky Cemetery which is a final resting place for many precious lives in that community, including Confederate Soliders, Emma Duesenberry, who is honored in the Library of Congress for her 160 folk songs, and Mrs. Holly Harshman, the namesake for Mena Public School’s upper elementary school. Though the Rocky Methodist Church no longer houses regular worship services, it remains a community building, where people gather for decoration, weddings, funerals and community meetings. “As a kid I remember going for afternoon singings, and some of my uncles would lead the preaching or neighboring preachers would come,” explained Paula Cox, member of The Rocky Methodist Church Association. This picturesque building has stood for over one hundred years and though in need of structural and roof repair, is in impressively good shape. “We brought in a contractor to look at the church and give us a quote and he was very impressed that there was no termite damage or rot in a building that old. The estimate he gave us to repair the structural damage to the church is $6,000, and a new roof will cost approximately the same amount, and the little old church needs repairs as soon as possible,” said Cox. The Rocky Mountain Methodist Church Association has teamed up with Bill Wells, a very talented local artist and they are selling prints of a picture Wells painted of the church building. The original copy of this beautiful piece is currently on display at the Union Bank of Mena and limited edition, 8 x 10 signed prints can be purchased for $35 from The Union Bank of Mena, The Shop, and George Davis State Farm Insurance on Main Street in Mena. In addition to the prints, greeting cards, post cards and 4 x 6 prints can be purchased at The Shop and George Davis State Farm Insurance. All of the proceeds of these sales will go directly to the repair and restoration of the church. Donations can also be made by depositing or mailing them to: Rocky Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Union Bank of Mena, P.O. Box 898, Mena, Arkansas 71953. Since August of 2015, The Rocky Methodist Church Association has worked hard to raise half of the funds needed to restore the church and will continue to work hard to raise the remainder. “The Rocky Methodist Church has been a part of the lives and memories of everyone that grew up in and around the Rocky Community. This beautiful old building still stands vigil over our soldiers, fathers, mothers and loved ones buried in the cemetery next to it. This old church has withstood storms and droughts. It has seen weddings, funerals, meetings, fellowships and decorations and it will stand for another hundred years if we get the repairs done quickly,” said Cox.

Local officers were led on a pursuit that ended in Oklahoma following an attempted traffic stop by Mena Police Department on Thursday, September 17, 2015. The chase began around 11:30 p.m. after the driver of a red Honda Accord refused to pull over for a Mena Police Department Officer. The pursuit ended in LeFlore County, Oklahoma when the vehicle eventually stopped on Haw Creek Road at a police roadblock. Officers from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office, Choctaw Nation Tribal Police, and the Oklahoma State Police assisted in the chase. Tommy Emmit Black, age 42 of Mena, and Herbert Ben Slater, age 30 of Mena, were both arrested in the incident. Black is being charged in Polk County with Possession of a Schedule VI Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Driving Left of Center, Reckless Driving, Improper Passing, No Driver’s License, No Vehicle License, and No Liability Insurance. Slater is being charged in Polk County with Obstructing a Governmental Operation and Destruction of Evidence. Both Black and Slater will also face further charges from Okla-

homa. “LeFlore County, Tribal Police, and Oklahoma State Police, their rapid response is what really helped put an end this before someone got hurt,” said Mena Police Department Investigator John Logan.

Farm Bureau Honors Maye Family at Annual Meeting

NEWS

BY MELANIE BUCK Polk County Farm Bureau recognized the Farm Family of the Year and also heard from guest speaker, County Judge Brandon Ellison, among others at their annual meeting on Monday night. Brian and Sonya Maye and their family were chosen as the recipients of this year’s honor. Brian and Sonya own Maye Club Lambs Farm and breed show class lambs that are bought and shown across the nation. Carla Vaught presented a slide show of the family and their farming operation and explained what Maye Club Lambs is about. A new Board of Directors for the local Farm Bureau was elected at the meeting as well; Allen Stewart, President; Ronney Fields, Vice President; Terry Keener, Secretary/Treasurer. Terry Terrell, Farrell Cole, David Head, Dennis Philpot, and Bill Hoek will serve three year terms as board members. Sue Cavner of Mena Regional Health System and several MASH Camp participants were on hand to thank the Bureau for their generous support as a corporate sponsor for the medical camp. Also, a teen challenge participant thanked the Bureau for sending her to a camp that she enjoyed and hopes to attend again. Polk County Judge Brandon Ellison was the guest speaker for the event. Ellison talked about much of the work that has been performed in the county and also about the fact that in his four and a half years in office, he has declared five emergencies including one this year that FEMA has yet to provide funds for. Ellison said he hopes that the funding comes through by the end of the year. Much of the County’s funds are being used to repair roads damaged by those natural disasters, on top of normal wear and tear. Judge Ellison also encouraged those in attendance to educate themselves on the issue of WOTUS (Waters of the United States) and the Environmental Protection Agency’s agenda on the issue. Some of the problems that Ellison said are currently on his plate are the uncertainty of the Polk County Jail remaining open and also spoke of the state wanting to hand over 65 miles worth of state highways over to the County. Ellison said, “We have the same problem the state does, too many roads and not enough money.” Pointing out that he doesn’t want even one more mile of road to take of than the County already has. Farm Bureau Manager Floyd Clark said of the event, “It was a great meeting and Judge Ellison spoke on some meaningful things for Polk County and national events. It was a well-attended meeting and we were fortunate to get some things accomplished. The County Fair Association Board served us dinner and they always do a great job. They always let us use their facilities here at the Fairgrounds. James Earl Turner came out and cooked and we thank them for their facilities. We also want to thank the 4-H clubs Chris Elder Auto Sales Curt’s Tire & Muffler that came and served us. We always enjoy North Side Super Stop Lime Tree Restaurant them and they learn the Mena Walmart Freedom Pharmacy servitude attitude, and ACCI the Cossatot River FFA Sears Hometown Store kids came and led the Alvin’s Heat and Air Union Bank of Mena pledge for us.”

Simmons

Mickey Simmons. “We’ve never been on the same schedule,” said Simmons. “It’s not easy being a state trooper’s wife. In all these years, I think we’ve only taken a couple of vacations. It’s time for us to have some time.” Simmons considers her greatest accomplishment to be the computerization of the Circuit Clerk office and all records from 2002 forward being maintained electronically. “We’ve even got all of the deeds from back to the 1940’s scanned in,” said Simmons proudly as she spoke of the employees in her office. “I’ve always believed that if you treat your employees good, they’ll work hard for you. And, these ladies certainly do!” Simmons said that she also considered it a great compliment that in seven elections, she has never attracted an opponent and his hopeful that is a reflection of how well her office has served the County. Understanding the importance that the office holds for its residents, she said her mission has always been for the records to be maintained so that everything ran smooth and efficiently, “You have to have everything right and there has to be a paper trail.”

4-H Building Dedication and The Pack Shack are Set for October

BY MELANIE BUCK Local 4-H Clubs will take part in The Pack Shack the first Saturday in October as their One Day of Service project to kick-off National 4-H month. The Pack Shack is a service oriented non-profit organization that facilitates meal-packing parties for those in need. Assistant 4-H Organizer, Loren Frost explained, “Our goal was originally to pack 10,000 meals to be distributed locally. We have since been challenged to increase our goal to 20,000 meals.” Each meal costs just .25 cents. Frost said that two local groups, the Mena Lioness Lions and the Polk County Master Gardeners have each donated $750 towards the project bringing their balance to $1,500. To pack 20,000 meals, the group needs to raise $5,000. “We are well on our way but we still need $2,100 to reach our goal,” said Frost. Area schools will benefit from The Pack Shack via the Backpack Program and they are looking for other area organizations that could receive meals as well. “We are already partnered with the school backpack programs, senior centers, Polk County Family Mission, God’s Feeding Hands, Acts of Love, Dallas Avenue Baptist Church, and Santas for Seniors. We want to help any group trying to help feed people. Let us know if you would like to participate,” said 4-H Coordinator Carla Vaught. Frost said that anyone interested in assisting with the project, whether by donating their time or resources, or for your organization to receive meals, call 479-394-6018. Also on October 3rd, there will be a dedication ceremony for the new 4-H Building at the Polk County Fairgrounds in addition to The Pack Shack Feed the Funnel party. The events start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, and all are invited. A ribbon cutting ceremony will also be performed.

Wheel A’ Mena Tour to the Top Attracts Cyclists from Across the Region

NEWS

BY MELANIE BUCK The Mena/Polk County Rotary held their 4th Annual Wheel A’ Mena Tour to the Top last Saturday and by all accounts, was a great success. Cyclists truly enjoyed the challenge and were well pleased with the Rotary’s setup of the event. The event brought in 81 participants from six states, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas. A 50-mile route was added this year to the 30-mile and 70-mile treks. All three routes began and ended in Janssen Park and the ride took cyclists through Mena, Acorn, some into Oklahoma, and all came climbing over Rich Mountain, Arkansas’ second highest peak. “The views were incredible,” said several of the riders. Rotarian Sonya Maye said that the club advertised that the event could be a great warmup to the Big Dam Bridge 100 that is coming up. However, Maye said that in the end, cyclists who have completed the Big Dam in the past said the Tour to the Top was a far more challenging course. Some of the cyclists pointed out that mile 30, where the 10-mile climb to Rich Mountain began, was one of the hardest climbs they have ever endured. The youngest rider was the first finisher of the 70-mile rally. Timothy Palyuch, of Dallas, Texas, finished in 3 hours and 37 minutes. Palyuch said he was impressed with the Rotary and “There were so many rest stops for us. After every challenging climb, there was a rest stop there; that was really nice. There was not a lot of traffic and the course was super bike friendly.” Coming in first in the 50-mile course was Scott Burns, of Louisiana, who finished in 2 hours and 31 minutes. Mike Boyd, from Texas, was the first to finish the 30-mile trek in 1 hour and 49 minutes. Maye said, “We had so many wonderful volunteers for the rest stops throughout the tour. the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Mighty Oaks 4-H, Mountain Valley 4-H, and Rotarian volunteers, manned the rest stops where restrooms and snacks were provided.” Maye credited First Responder and Polk County Emergency Management Director James Reeves with providing trailers and radios for communication and Southwest EMS who followed the entire event to ensure the safety of all riders. Maye also said that many of the cyclists bring their families in for the weekend where they spend money on lodging, eating, and shopping, bringing important revenue into the community. “We enjoyed hearing so many wonderful comments about what all our community has to offer and how beautiful the area is,” Maye said. The annual event is the Rotary’s signature fundraiser and also their largest of the year. Maye explained that all the money raised stays within the county for programs such as their Dictionary Drive where all county 3rd graders are given their own dictionary. “Rotarians believe very strongly in ComOmitabove the 800 number mitment to Service Self. Our and local chapter has approximately 30 members who volunteer in our local community as well as 816 S. Mena St. internationally to support education and job Mena, AR 71953 training, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, and eradicate polio. Worldwide, Office: (479) 394-5000 there are 1.2 million Rotarians with more www.FarrellCole.com than 34,000 clubs,” said Maye.

She opened The Rage in 2010 in downtown Mena and didn’t depend on the storefront by itself but rather launched an aggressive social media and online presence that she credits to the store’s overwhelming success. She connected with a unique style and had the ability to market what was a brand new concept with online boutiques that catapulted her to phenomenal retail success. Bonner, has now moved on and opened a second store in Nashville, Tenn., The Revv, that she says is closer to her own personal style that she describes as “neutral, polished grunge.” Bonner’s family explained to The Pulse that her ultimate goal is to have a franchise opportunity between one or both stores.

Soup Kitchen in Fear of Closing

Weekly Publication

BY MELANIE BUCK Barbara Morrow, of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mena, said they are running out of funding for their weekly soup kitchen and it is in danger of closing. To try to raise money, the church is having a yard sale in their church parking lot on Friday, September 25 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The church is located at 149 Polk Road 43, also known as Fairgrounds Road. The Arkansas Path Finders, a youth group within Seventh Day Adventist Churches are making free pack lunches for the day as part of a community service project to help the soup kitchen. The soup kitchen has been serving hot and healthy meals to the community for at least two years each Tuesday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Morrow said they serve at least 130 meals per week and some say it is the only hot meal they get each week. Morrow expressed that they are a small church and they can only do so much but they try. They purchase food from the Feed America program but spend over $1,000 per month trying to keep up with the high demand of feeding Polk County’s hungry. Kitchen workers are trying in desperation to raise the much-needed funds to keep the kitchen going. “It’s a large family to feed and there are people that are there every week and depend on us,” said Morrow. Morrow asked that if you bring items for the yard sale, there are not many people available to help out so please bring items that Friday morning and please have your items priced. Morrow said she does have a small amount of space to store something if necessary, but not much. If you have items for the yard sale, questions about the program, or would like to help out in general, you can contact Morrow at 479-234-1034.

Chicken Little Mrs. Fleshman goes to the butcher shop to buy a chicken for the Sunday meal. The butcher has only one scrawny chicken left. He puts it on the scale. “Three pounds,” he says. “That’s too scrawny; don’t you have something bigger?” Mrs. Fleshman asks. He pretends to rummage around, and then puts the same chicken back on the scale, while pressing with his thumb. “Three and a half pounds,” he says. “That looks better,” says Mrs. Fleshman. “I’ll take them both.”

Ways to Welcome a Baby

FAMILY

#LOL

Celebrating a new baby is both exciting and busy. However, setting up the house and buying new baby items can be expensive. Whether you are expecting a little one, or are shopping for someone else who is, simple money-saving ideas from the discount experts at Dollar General can help give you peace of mind that everything is ready for the arrival. Get Back to Basics Stock up on the essentials before baby’s arrival. Items like diapers, wipes, bottles and baby lotion are easy to buy and are always useful. While you’re out shopping, pick up an item with each visit to the store to gradually build your stock at home. If you’re buying for an expecting mommy, ask her what she needs. This will avoid duplicate purchases. Take advantage of extra savings by utilizing a digital coupon program like DG digital coupons and save even more when baby items are on sale. Take Care of Mommy While everyone is excited about the new baby, it’s important to also remember Mommy. Take time to pamper the mom-to-be with extra attention and ideas that can make her life easier. One practical way to help her out is by making meals that are quick and delicious. Retailers like Dollar General offer a variety of easy-to-fix dinner recipes, from appetizers to main dishes to side dishes and desserts, and the ingredients are available at great, everyday low prices. For ideas, check out the DG easy meals website at www.dg.com/easymeals. Make a Gift DIY is a great way to save money and add your personal touch to any baby shower gift. You can make a baby gift basket with baby toys, bibs and a photo frame. Another thoughtful idea is to make a mom survival kit with sweets, scented candles, bath items and a new movie. Giving gifts with that personal touch not only saves money, but shows the new mom how much you care. You don’t have to let the stress of expenses get in the way of welcoming a little one! A little extra effort and preparedness can go a long way to make baby’s arrival fun and memorable.

John Maddox - Making His Own Mark on the County and State

BY JACLYN ROSE

John Maddox enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, calling the Hogs, and doing his part in helping his community succeed. A native of Mena, Maddox graduated from Mena High School in 1987 and went on to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree and then a Law Degree from the University of Arkansas Law School. Immediately upon graduation, Maddox returned to Polk County and joined his father, Attorney David Maddox, at Maddox and Maddox Attorneys at Law in Mena. While attending the University of Arkansas, Maddox met his wife, Mandy, and they married in 1997. Together they have two daughters, Madison, a 16-year old sophomore at Mena High School, and Macy, a 13-year old 8th grader at Mena Middle School. Mandy teaches Kindergarten at Louise Durham Elementary. “Mandy is an amazing wife and mother and I’m very blessed to be married to her. She takes great care of all of us,” said Maddox. “I really enjoy and feel very blessed to be able to spend so much time with my wife and kids.” Maddox and Maddox Attorneys at Law have been representing the people of Polk County and Western Arkansas for more than 40 years. “We are a general practice law firm that specializes in estate planning, wills and trusts, business formations, contracts, real estate, personal injury, and banking law. We have two employees, Vicki Bosch, a paralegal, and Benji Ferguson, our legal assistant. Both are great assets to us and have been with the firm longer than I have. I really enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories and trying to assist them in their business ventures or their personal lives,” explained Maddox. As a small business owner in Polk County, with strong ties to Montgomery County, Maddox is especially interested in the Arkansas Tax Code. Currently higher than all surrounding states, Maddox feels that it is time to reform the tax code and reduce the regulatory burden in order to increase economic growth for the state and District 20. In the upcoming election cycle Maddox will run as the Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives. Maddox follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Ode Maddox, who held the seat for this district for 42 years. “My grandfather was the best and most God-fearing man I have ever known. He served as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Oden for many years and he was a great example on how to live your life,” explained Maddox. Maddox is a member of the local community, with children in the school district, who has a vested interest in the good of the district. “My plan is to be able to reach out and have a conversation with every business owner and listen to their concerns. I want them to be able to come to me regarding any piece of legislation that concerns them, as well as any regulatory agency that they may be having an issue with. Advocating for and assisting existing employers is very important to me,” explained Maddox. “This is where I’m from and I truly care about this area.” Maddox also hopes that by reforming the tax code, new businesses will be able to open and sustain themselves in Arkansas, specifically in District 20, and that with new businesses will come new jobs. “I want to do everything we can do to incentivize work and to help people to get off the social safety net and into the work force,” explained Maddox. “If I am elected it will be a sacrifice, I really enjoy being home every night with Mandy and my girls, but sometimes people who care have to stand up and serve,” Maddox said. Maddox currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Rich Mountain Community College, as the Chairman of the Polk County Republican Committee, on the boards of PCDC, the Union Bank of Mena, and as a member of the local Lions Club. He has previously served as a board member for the Polk County Chamber of Commerce. “I enjoy living in a community where we know each other, I regularly talk to friends I went to elementary school with. We are truly a community and that is what I like about living in Polk County. It was never a question to me, I knew I would go to school and come back to Mena. This area is and always has been home to me,” Maddox said.

Davis Brothers - Their Family Serving Your Family Since 1982 BY JACLYN ROSE Rick and George Davis are brothers who began working together in 1982 with the video store, Rick’s Prime Time, and have continued to do so ever since. “I have never seen two people that work together better than Rick and George,” said Adrianna Davis, George’s wife. The brothers are both graduates of Mena High School and hail from a family of inventive and creative business owners. Their parents, George and Rosie Davis, are known nationally for their invention of tick necklaces back in the 1970’s. They created and sold these necklaces as a fundraiser for a church youth trip and were featured on the national show, Real People, in 1980. Rick laughs and explains that he and George served as the tick pickers, as it was their job to harvest the ticks. Rick met his wife, Kim, at Mena High School when Kim’s family moved to Mena. They married in 1988 after Kim graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Marketing. They have five children: Ricky who is married to Lauren Maye Davis, Hayley who is married to Jeff Sadler, Makenzie who is married to Ty Harris, Brady who graduated in 2015 from Mena High School, and Taylor who is currently in the fourth grade at Holly Harshman Elementary. George met his wife, Adrianna, while they were attending Brigham Young University in Utah. “It was love at first sight,” joked George, and Adrianna agreed. They married in 1994 after Adrianna completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Together they have four sons: Georgie, who is on a two-year mission for the Mormon Church in Wisconsin, Daniel who is a 9th grader at Mena High School, William who is a sixth grader at Mena Middle School, and Richie who is in Kindergarten at Louise Durham Elementary. Rick and George expanded their video selling business to include pizza with Really Great Pizza in 1992 and in 1998 when the video market began to decline because of the internet and satellite television, the brothers decided to join the business rather than compete. They began selling Direct TV because they offered the NFL ticket and then expanded to include Dish Network and eventually they began offering Exceed High Speed Internet. In 2008, they saw a need for a good used car dealership in Mena and chose to fill that niche and started selling cars. They now have two car lots, one at their satellite/internet office at 120 Highway 71 South and the other located at 901 ½ Highway 71 South. “We saw a need for the car sales and we decided to sell them, we sell used cars with a primary focus on cars under $4,000 because there is no sales tax payment required on them,” explained Rick. Rick and George both travel a lot with work and leave the day-to-day business in the hands of their wives and their trusted managers. Kim manages the financial side of the business while Adrianna focuses on the accounting and paperwork for the car sales. John Kincaid works as their General Manager over the entire operation and has worked with the Davis Brothers for many years. “John is absolutely vital to our success. He has worked with us for the past 17 years and oversees all of our business operations,” said Rick. Rocky Slusser manages their car business. “Rocky does a fantastic job buying and selling cars,” said George. “We really appreciate all the business we have received, especially those repeat customers for their continued support,” said Rocky. “We have customers that come back every year to trade in their car or buy another one and many customers that will send their family members down to buy from us. We really appreciate that kind of business and all our customers,” explained Kim. The Davis Brothers have 20 employees and serve people all over the state of Arkansas as well as parts of Oklahoma and Texas. They have been named in the top ten retailers for Direct TV Nationwide, the top ten retailers for Exceed nationwide, and are in the Top 100 retailers for Dish Network. Those are high honors coming from a small community. “We are so thankful for all our employees, they are good and loyal and so awesome at customer service. We really appreciate them,” said Kim. To the Davises family is deeply important. “We love the small, close knit, and safe environment that Polk County offers us. I grew up in the Washington D.C. area so I have a real appreciation for small town life,” explained Adrianna. “We love the people here,” added George. “And it’s even better because our extended families are here. All of the cousins play together and get to spend time with their grandparents and we love it,” said Kim.

RMCC Hosted Successful Events with Special Guest, Craig Karges

SUBMITTED On September 9, 2015, Rich Mountain Community College hosted its 2nd Annual Senior Day event in the Ouachita Center with over 425 people in attendance. Students from Caddo Hills, Cossatot River, Mena, Mt. Ida, Ouachita River, Smithville, and Waldron high schools joined together in the Dick and Frances Carver Grand Hall to learn about what RMCC has to offer as they prepare to graduate and enter college. Financial Aid, a potential hurdle on the path to higher education, was discussed and cost comparisons with universities were presented. While the urge to break out on your own is tempting, setting a strong academic foundation at RMCC can help ensure success when a student transfers to a university or enters the workforce. Whether a student wishes to complete a Technical Certificate, Associate Degree, or transfer on to complete their Bachelors, RMCC is ready to help them take that first step. This year, RMCC brought in mentalist and extraordinaire, Craig Karges. He combined the art of magic with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression on the students that nothing was impossible. Dr. Steve Rook, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs said, “I have known Craig Karges

Senior Day

for many years and he continues to be the consummate entertainer. I’m excited that our students and community got to experience his unique brand of entertainment.” Jerod McCormick, RMCC Recruiter, played an integral role in helping this event gain ground. He says, “Senior Day is my favorite day of the year. It’s the one time of the year we get to showcase RMCC to all of our service area schools. We combined that with Craig Karges who absolutely knocked it out of the park. It was a great day to be a part of the RMCC family.” In the afternoon, students participated in the Clubapalooza event, which was an event held on the Beam Veranda and Union Bank Plaza. Clubapalooza allowed students and community members to meet RMCC student organizations and to get involved. SGA, PTK, Science Club, and Math Club members set up information exchange tables to engage and involve RMCC students in clubs and organizations on campus. ARVEST Bank was there to cook burgers for the event. For the evening event, Craig performed for the students and general public. He amazed the crowd with his memory techniques, tested their intuition, and encouraged them to tap into their subconscious mind to enhance creativity, intuition and decision-making. The show had a great turn out with over 250 in attendance. RMCC is excited about next years’ event in hopes of an even better turn out. For more information about Senior Day or Clubapalooza contact, Jerod McCormick, RMCC Recruiter, 479-394-7622 ext.1430 or jmccormick@rmcc.edu.

danced in style on the field as they pulled off several plays that sent the enthusiastic crowd to their feet. The Tigers did draw first blood in the 1st Quarter when at the 5 minute mark, they hit the endzone with a touchdown. The Tigers PAT was no good and the score was set at 6-0, where it remained through the rest of the quarter. In the 2nd quarter, the Bearcats truly found their footing when they scored their first touchdown of the game on a Tigers possession. Junior Justin Dean ran the ball in on a punt return with 11:48 to go in the half and then Senior Justin Godfrey sent the pigskin flying through the posts to gain the one-point PAT to bring the Bearcats the lead at 7-6. Less than five minutes passed on the game clock before Dean caught a soaring pass sent by Sophomore Quarterback Carson Cannon in the endzone for a second touchdown. Godfrey again owned the uprights with the PAT, bringing the score to 14-6. With 53 seconds left in the half, David Hatfield intercepted the ball and the Bearcats snared another touchdown and PAT to bring the halftime score to 21-6. Throughout the second half, the Bearcat defense worked hard to keep the Tigers under wraps but with 1:25 left in the 3rd, the Tigers hit the endzone one more time. The Tigers tried for a two-point conversion in vain and the Bearcats led, 21-12. The Bearcats remained a driving force in the 4th when at 2nd and goal, the Bearcats drove in and grab another touchdown and Godfrey split the uprights leaving the score, 28-12. The last touchdown of the night came from Cannon. On the quarterback keep, Cannon ran from three yards out then Godfrey kicked for his last PAT of the night bringing a Bearcat 35-12 victory over Mansfield. Head Coach Tim Harper said, “What a great team win for the Bearcats! So proud of my Coaches and players. They all stepped up in my absence and did a phenomenal job.” The night’s acting head coach, Craig Bentley said, “I’m very proud of the boys and our coaching staff. The boys deserved a victory and I’m glad they were able to achieve that on Homecoming.” The Bearcats will face Ashdown Panthers this Friday in Bearcat Stadium for their second conference game of the season. Kick-off begins at 7:30 p.m. The Bearcats stand at a 1-2 record for this season.
