oliticians like to talk. And since he has taken office, new mayor and former newspaper executive Mark Jamieson has been doing his fair share. And a lot of the talk from Mark is about the economic future of the region. Mark’s focus is on three big projects that he believes are the keys to the economic fortunes of the Coast – the airport expansion, Maroochydore city centre and Kawana hospital precinct. So this week, MWP has the lowdown on each. The mayor reckons that getting these three projects up and running will help the longterm future of our region, providing jobs, business confidence and the economic stimulus that’s been lacking of late. And I believe the mayor isn’t just talking the talk – as a former businessman he knows well that our prosperity hinges on economic stability,

] sustained, sensible development and jobs, lots of jobs. Head to page 6 to read up on that. Our property cover story, on page 44, is also looking to the future. Jarna Baudinette discovers that in terms of housing, there is a lot to be optimistic about. he Sunshine Coast Council has flagged three major projects as the keys to the region’s economic prosperity in the next few years. MWP gives you the lowdown on each. At an Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) breakfast last month, the Sunshine Coast’s new mayor Mark Jamieson reminded the large group of his campaign slogan (‘a new direction’), quoted Albert Einstein and talked up plans to “establish long-term strength in our economy”. Those in attendance could have been forgiven for thinking the mayor was still in campaign mode, but the focus of his speech was about getting “the big three right”. Those big three – the new hospital precinct at Kawana, the Maroochydore principal activity centre, and the Sunshine Coast airport – are, says the mayor, the keys to the Coast’s future economic prosperity.

KAWANA HUB “In terms of our economy you don’t get bigger than the $2 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital [SCUH] at Kawana,” Jamieson told the UDIA gathering. But the health hub is more than just a big hospital. MWP reported back in April that the area, a huge employment generator with a hefty budget, includes the SCUH, a private hospital developed and operated by Ramsay Health Care, a research centre, a commercial precinct and Kawana town centre. And it’s not just doctors and nurses who will benefit – thousands of construction jobs will be created to build the precinct, and once complete, employment will be provided for not just the hospital staff but supporting businesses. The town centre will feature about 80,000 square metres of retail, commercial, community and entertainment spaces as well as M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

medium-density housing. More housing will be needed for these workers and their families, and developers have committed to delivering thousands of new homes, townhouses and apartments in the surrounding areas. Construction has already begun on the private hospital and is expected to be completed late next year. Construction of the public hospital, which will open in 2016, is due to start in 2013. The mayor is determined to see the precinct, which he calls a “game changer”, rise out of the ground quickly

THE AIRPORT It’s been all talk and no action for years on the airport expansion plans, and long-term locals could be forgiven for tuning out when the subject is brought up. Still, the mayor is determined to see the upgrade of our airport, which he says will ensure the facility can “meet growth, create jobs, stimulate the economy, improve airport services, and reduce disruptions”. On May 18, the council received the terms of reference for an environmental impact statement (EIS),

Maroochydore will be developed as a thriving city centre – the natural capital of the Sunshine Coast. It will include a mix of commercial, retail and residential development and smoothly, saying the area is “good for businesses, our builders and plumbers, our real estate agents, our shop owners, our mums and dads who are trying to put food on the table for the kids. [It’s] good for our high school students who are looking for career paths once they finish year 12.”

THE PAC “I can’t overemphasise the importance of this project,” Jamieson told the UDIA gathering of the Maroochydore principal activity centre (PAC). Now that the intense debate over a 53-hectare slice of land formerly owned by Horton Park Golf Club in the middle of Maroochydore is a distant memory, the council is keen to see Maroochydore transformed. State and council planning designated the golf course as part of the Coast’s new PAC five years ago, but club members didn’t like it. After rejecting the council’s initial offer of $39 million for the land, the council stated that it intended to take vacant possession, but on October 28 last year the council and Horton Park Golf Club entered into the Horton Park Golf Course Resumption Agreement 2011. For $42 million, the club had relinquished the land, though it continues to occupy its Maroochydore site under a peppercorn rental agreement until June 30, 2014. The ownership struggle finally over, the council is able to get cracking on PAC planning. “Maroochydore will be developed as a thriving city centre – the natural capital of the Sunshine Coast,” Jamieson said at the breakfast. “It will include a mix of commercial, retail and residential development, parklands, walkways and public transport. Maroochydore will become one of the most exciting locations for investment and employment growth in Australia.” The mayor announced the locally based companies Cardno, KHA and Place had been selected to work on the master-planning of the golf course. “When construction gets underway, this project will create thousands of jobs, and ultimately Maroochydore will be home to many new jobs and businesses to provide a much-needed boost to our economy.” MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. which was finalised by the Queensland CoordinatorGeneral, and this month the airport announced that a comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement program around the expansion, which includes a new runway, had started. “Construction of the new runway could start by around 2015, with the new runway operational by around 2020,” the mayor said at the UDIA breakfast.

FAST FACTS The public and private hospital and the Skills, Academic and Research Centre will create

Expansion of our airport could begin by 2015 “Of course that’s subject to approval of the EIS, and funding – this is why council will continue to work hard to get financial backing for the project.” While Jamieson is keen to see more planes flying into our region, he’d rather not pay for it. “I would love the Federal Government to pay the bulk of the costs, which run into the hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said. “But we must be prepared for the possibility the Federal Government doesn’t come to the party and look at alternative funding methods.” Last week he said getting the community involved was an important step for the project, which would create thousands of jobs. HOSTAGE COUPLE TO FINISH SAILING VOYAGE

couple held hostage by Somali pirates for more than a year are planning to finish their round-the-world sailing trip. Rachel and Paul Chandler say they have the support of family and friends who raised £500,000 ($790,000) of ransom money for them.

They were kidnapped in October 2009 and held separately for more than a year. Mr Chandler says those around them had been “wonderful”. “They want us to get our lives back, and life for us at the moment is travelling and sailing,” he says. “I don’t think they would be very positive if we were to be captured again, but we had bad luck. We were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the chances of it happening again are incredibly small.” The couple spent 388 days in captivity after armed raiders boarded their yacht, Lynn Rival, as they sailed from the Seychelles to Tanzania in dangerous waters. The retired pair, from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, were released in November 2010 after a ransom was paid. The navy has returned their boat to them, which they are restoring. PA

Abuse for man with killer’s mobile number A man who bought his first mobile phone at the age of 49 has received a flood of abusive calls. Junior Guy says the calls started as soon as he switched his phone on. Strangers called at all hours. Some were insulting, others angry. Sometimes, they threatened him. By the second day he figured out what was going on. The phone company had given him the number previously used by George Zimmerman, a neighbourhood watch volunteer who caused a storm when he shot a young man dead in February. The number was the one Zimmerman spelled out to police in a recorded call the night he killed Trayvon Martin. Guy estimates he received 70 threatening calls. He says he and his mother had moved out of his home in fear and he was claiming damages from the mobile phone company. MCT

Singer Lauryn Hill faces tax charges US singer Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file income tax returns for several years. Hill earned more than $US1.6 million during 2005, 2006 and 2007, the three years she allegedly failed to file returns, the US Attorney’s office in New Jersey says. Hill’s primary source of income is royalties from the recording and film industries, prosecutors say. She also owns and operates four corporations: Creations Music, Boogie Tours, L H Productions 2001, and Studio 22, according to court papers.

Fleetwood Mac’s Bob Welch found dead Bob Welch, a former member of Fleetwood Mac who also had a solo career, has died aged 65. Police spokesman Don Aaron says he died on Thursday from a selfinflicted bullet wound. Welch’s wife found him at their south Nashville home. Welch was a guitarist and vocalist for Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974. A native of Los Angeles, he scored his biggest solo hit with Sentimental Lady, which reached number eight on the Billboard chart. Prince William becomes RAF rescue captain

Prince William has qualified as an operational search and rescue captain in the Royal Air Force (RAF), royal officials say. The prince’s office, Clarence House, says that William – known as Flight Lieutenant Wales in the military – will now be able to command search and rescue operations in Sea King helicopters. Clarence House says William had completed two days of ground and air-based tests to achieve the qualification, including scenarios

Health officials have reported 61 confirmed and suspected cases of legionnaire’s disease in Scotland, an outbreak that has left one man dead. Of the 61 cases, all in the Edinburgh area, 24 were confirmed, Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon told Scotland’s parliament on Thursday. The rest were suspected cases. The illness is contracted by breathing AAP in small droplets of water contaminated with the Legionella bacteria. The symptoms are similar to those of flu, including coughs, fever and chills. Officials are trying to trace the source of the outbreak, which is centred in an industrial area of the city. The sole death so far was that of a 56-year-old man. AP

Residents of a small Scottish village called Dull, are confident they will become a sister community with the US town of Boring. Dull and Boring forged an unlikely link when Elizabeth Leighton, who lives near the Scottish village, was on holiday in the US. She passed through Boring, Oregon, and immediately phoned a Dull friend with an idea to link the two towns. Burtles contacted council authorities to discuss the possibility of twinning the communities. However, as Boring has a population of more than 10,000, to Dull’s 84 residents, the towns can’t be twinned. PA

Romney emails possibly hacked US authorities are investigating a report that Mitt Romney’s personal email account has been hacked. The website Gawker reported that an unnamed hacker had broken into the Republican flagbearer’s private Hotmail account by guessing the answer to a security question about Romney’s favourite pet. The anonymous hacker says the same password also gave him access to Romney’s account for file-sharing service Dropbox.

HOAX COLLAR BOMBER TO BE SENTENCED IN OCTOBER

he man who broke into a Sydney house and strapped a fake collar bomb to schoolgirl Madeleine Pulver will spend more than a year in custody before he is sentenced. Paul Douglas Peters, 51, did not appear when his matter was mentioned before Downing Centre District Court on Friday. Judge Ronald Solomon adjourned the matter to October 19 for sentencing. Peters entered the Pulver family home on the afternoon of August 3, 2011 in Mosman, on Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lower north shore, and strapped the hoax device around the 17-year-oldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neck in a failed extortion attempt. Detectives tracked him to a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky, where FBI agents arrested him on August 15 at his ex-wifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house. On September 14, Peters waived his right to an extradition hearing and agreed to be transported in custody back to Australia. He arrived 10 days later and has been in custody since September 24. Peters pleaded guilty on March 8, 2012 to aggravated break and enter and committing a serious indictable offence. He faces a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. AAP

Vic police to trial uniform cameras Victorian police will trial using recording equipment attached to their uniforms to tape their interactions with the public. The uniform cams will be tested out by police in Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s southern region, The Age newspaper says. The police union criticised the trial, fearing it could make people reluctant to share information with police, and said information gathered could be used against officers in court. Liberty Victoria, which has a history of campaigning against the use of surveillance cameras, said it could see some benefits. Some highway patrol cars are already fitted with video devices and cameras will be fitted to Tasers, which will become standard issue. Victoria Police says the idea is still in development and there is no date yet for when the trial will start. AAP

GETTING TOUGH ON MOTORBIKE LICENSING

Percival powers through to grand final

aloundra MP Mark McArdle has tabled a petition in state parliament urging the State Government to overhaul Queensland’s motorbike licensing laws. Some 1331 signatures comprised the hardcopy petition, while 1427 people signed the online petition, which was automatically lodged shortly after the closing date. Petition creators, Sunshine Coast mothers Donna Ferguson and Lorraine Conolly, who have both lost sons in motorbike accidents, have spearheaded a campaign for changes to the state’s motorcycle laws. They want to see tougher training measures and on-road experience for people obtaining a motorbike licence. McArdle says the community has supported the women’s quest.

Lorraine Conolly, Mark McArdle and Donna Ferguson want stricter laws “Donna and Lorraine want to ensure no family ever has to go through what they have had to endure,” Mr McArdle says. “We’ve had a significant response to their quest and I sincerely thank people for backing their cause.” The petition was addressed to Transport Minister Scott Emerson for his consideration and response.

CHANGER PREVIEW What do you get when you mix Aussie rules football with soccer, volleyball and basketball? The answer is Ausball, a modified version of Australian football scoring big points overseas.

hen Aussie Denis Ryan arrived in Maryland in 1998, he was closing out a year-long adventure that had beaten him down. Ryan wanted to return home but felt that if he did, he would have given up his last opportunity to travel the world and see more of the United States. After getting a job in security at the local Australian embassy, Ryan received a $2000 grant to teach the sport he loved, Australian rules football, to schools in the area. He tweaked the game with the intention of introducing a safe, easy and fun version of the sport to American children. From there, he developed Ausball, a modified version of the sport, which rolls soccer, volleyball and basketball into one game. It provided the perfect bridge for Americans to learn Australian football. “Many Americans have bad misconceptions about the [Australian] version of football,” Ryan, 43, says. “People think it’s just football without pads, but it’s not. I just want to get people to try it and take it from there. It’s a great pathway sport.” Ausball is a non-contact game played with a rugbyshaped rubber ball. Players must punch or punt the ball to a teammate and score points during two 15-minute halves by kicking the ball through goal posts on each end of the field. Players are required to give up the ball after three steps in most circumstances, which encourages

teamwork and the participation of everyone on the field. “It’s almost impossible for a person to be selfish in the game because you can’t accomplish anything,” says Ed Roesinger, director of the Mora Crossman Recreation Centre in East Baltimore. “It’s great to teach kids teamwork because everything now is so oriented around the individual. That was the main reason we got involved.” Ryan taught a six-week clinic at Roesinger’s recreation centre a few years ago. Roesinger says if the sport can be demonstrated and seen, children in the US will take a quick liking to it. The difficult part is spreading the word and getting exposure when most kids are busy playing basketball, football, baseball and other traditional American sports. “The kids liked the idea of how competitive it was and everybody had a share of the ball,” Roesinger says. “It’s one of those things [where] seeing it is going to sell it.” Ryan runs a six-team adult Ausball league based in Baltimore. There is also a league in Sacramento that was started by a former member of the Baltimore league who moved to California. When he arrived in the US, Ryan says, he failed to understand the culture of American sports. In America, everything is based on progressing to the next level of ability, Ryan noticed. Outside schools, there isn’t much opportunity to compete, so once kids graduate, their athletic careers typically end. In Australia, it’s much

Ryan established an Ausball league in Baltimore because he wanted to give men and women a chance to compete and continue to play sports at any level and any age. “It doesn’t matter if you make it to the next level, there’s always somewhere to play back home,” Ryan says. “The United States sports culture is very score-based. I guess on the downside it becomes elitist, so there’s not a lot of options to play once you can’t advance to the next skill level.” Ryan, who works as a project manager at a local construction company, says athletes from various backgrounds have taken a liking to Australian rules football. Although he originally believed basketball players would adjust to Ausball the easiest, he says those with soccer backgrounds enjoy being able to touch the ball with their hands. “They have the basics down with their feet, and like that they can use their hands in this sport,” Ryan says. “It’s very liberating for them after playing soccer for so long.” A major reason schools are starting to teach the sport

Some of the young athletes Ryan has mentored have pursued the sport by playing Australian football at the national level in the USAFL, with some joining the United States Revolution and Freedom, the male and female national teams. He even had a former player, Shae McNamara, reach the Australian Football League. A plumber by trade, Ryan always wanted to continue playing and teaching Australian football no matter where he was or what job he held. “My passion was always Australian football at home. That’s been my ambition here,” he says. “Once people try it and play it, they absolutely love it.” AAP

he Australian sharemarket is down approximately 10 per cent this financial year. While this is disappointing, it does provide an opportunity to transfer personally held shares to your super fund. The advantage of this strategy is that it moves investments from your personal tax environment, where you could be paying up to 45 per cent tax, to your super fund, where 15 per cent is the maximum rate. Once in pension mode, no tax is payable. Assets being transferred to your super fund via an in-specie transfer

must be purchased at market value, and the transfer is treated by the ATO as a capital gains tax event, resulting in either a capital gain or loss. For example, if you invested $50,000 in BHP shares in January 2011, these shares may be valued at around $35,000 now. If you still believe that BHP is good-quality stock, you can transfer the holding to your super fund at minimal cost via off-market transfer. This would result in a loss in your own name of $15,000. Similarly, if the shares are in profit, recent market weakness may provide the opportunity to realise a lower capital gain but still retain ownership via your super fund. This transfer will be treated as a contribution to super and fall within the concessional or non-concessional, contribution limits that we have discussed in previous articles. The government has proposed

that from July 1, if you wish to transfer your personal shares to super, this will require you to sell and buy back on the open market. You will no longer be able to complete an off-market transfer form. You would be required to pay brokerage, or a transfer fee, to facilitate the transfer. The reasoning behind the proposed changes is to prevent the ‘cherry-picking’ of dates where transfers are attributed to a date that minimises capital gains tax or excessive contribution tax. If you wish to take advantage of recent price falls and transfer shares to super in a relatively simple and cost efficient manner, you may need to act before June 30. After taking antidepressants for 20 years, she was shocked to find there was a cause for her depression that was never found. Within weeks she was excited, happy, motivated and amazed to get her life back. When she first began antidepressants, she felt a lack of interest in life, low mood, irritability, anger, anxiety and insomnia. Exhaustion then caused more anger and irritability. With a young family, the strain was too much, so she went to her GP and began antidepressants, which worked well, but needed to be maintained for a normal life. When I first saw her, she had responded to an ad about depression and was curious about coming off her antidepressants. After asking a few questions, and scanning her brain and body for inflammation, infection, hormone and brain chemical levels, it was clear what the causes were.

STUDY PRAISES VEGO DIET

mid debate over the pros and cons of vegetarianism, Australian doctors are being assured their patients will benefit if they adopt a diet free of meat. An Australian-first scientific research review, published in the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) last Monday, has found vegetarians receive more health benefits than risks from their plant-based diet. The MJA supplement examined deficiencies traditionally thought to affect those who have adopted a vegetarian diet and found they are receiving adequate levels of protein, iron and zinc. Nutritionist Dr Rosemary Stanton, who has written an accompanying editorial to the research papers, says the scientific evidence shows a well-planned, plant-based diet can meet the nutritional needs of adults and children. “The evidence is quite good that people who follow a vegetarian diet are likely to have less heart disease, less colorectal cancer, less type-2 diabetes and they’re less

likely to be obese,” Stanton says. While those who don’t eat fish may be receiving less omega-3 fatty acids than considered desirable, the study also found vegetarians don’t exhibit signs of a clinical deficiency. Deficiencies in vitamin B12 were noted in vegans (people who shun any animal-based product, including milk and eggs). B12 is required to help make red blood cells and to keep nerves functioning and the study recommended vegans receive supplements either through eating B12-fortified foods or by taking a daily supplement. Stanton says the study was also prompted by the increase in the number of people who are looking to reduce their intake of meat for both health and sustainability. “The question they’ve been asking, which this supplement aims to answer, is ‘Is there a problem if I don’t have meat every night?’ and the answer is almost certainly no, but it doesn’t mean that you just have a bucket of chips,” Stanton says. Nothing traumatic had happened during the time the depression began, she was relaxed and happy as she had returned from an overseas holiday. This always rings alarm bells, as there are bacteria in water overseas that can cause depression, so we organised a bowel test. We also found that when she was moody, it fluctuated, with bouts of sleepiness, and fogginess throughout the day. This usually indicates a relationship with food, as the symptoms start between meals, first irritability and fogginess, then sleepiness, then back to normal. When food does not agree with you, it

can cause depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and low thyroid function. The liver detoxifies the offending food, by using enzymes which are also involved in making serotonin in the brain. This results in the brain under-functioning leading to low moods. One of these enzymes is responsible for producing melatonin for sleep, so insomnia follows. The thyroid drops in function during a food reaction. In women this will cause the progesterone to drop, which creates an oestrogen dominance problem leading to PMS, menopausal symptoms, and more hormonal imbalances including severe mood swings. We found with testing she had a few offending foods she was eating regularly, and when we received the results from her gut test found she also had a bacterial overgrowth affecting the brain. After treating these, starting a good diet, and raising serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine naturally, she was feeling amazing within weeks. Depression and other mood disorders affect one in four Australians, and we have successfully treated over 400 people within just a few years. It is not a disease that has unknown cause, like many believe, and can be resolved quickly.

ASIAN CHICKEN COLESLAW The star of this colourful salad is really the fresh herbs. Adding shredded chicken makes it substantial enough to enjoy on its own, or serve it as an accompaniment. Serves 4 Allergy free

SHOPPING LIST • 2 x 250g skinless chicken breast fillets • ¼ small savoy cabbage, shredded • ¼ purple cabbage, shredded • 4 carrots, grated • 1 cup mint leaves • 1 cup coriander leaves

Dressing • 3 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce, gluten-free, wheat-free • 1 tablespoon lime juice

METHOD Pour water into a small frying pan or medium saucepan until three-quarters full and bring to the boil. Add the chicken breasts, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer, covered, for 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Remove from the water and set aside to cool. To make the dressing, place all the ingredients in a small screw-top jar and shake well to combine. Shred the cooled chicken breasts with your fingers, then place in a large bowl or platter with the cabbage, carrot, mint and coriander. Drizzle over the dressing and toss gently until combined.

LA VIDA: FINE FOOD WITHOUT THE FANFARE PREVIEW Travis Schultz is managing partner of Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers and a lover of fine food and wine.

oosa may well be a region blessed with pristine beaches, world-class national parks and a real natural beauty, but it’s also favoured with more than its fair share of top-end eating houses. While it’s the big name hoity-toity venues that tend to get all the press, there are many, like La Vida Restaurant at the northern end of Hastings Street, that consistently deliver a quality dining experience, without all of the fanfare. La Vida is a relative newcomer (of 10 years) to the glamour strip, but has carved its niche as the ‘go to’ place for fresh local seafood in a casual alfresco environment. And as is often the case, the Fresh Australian Pacific Oysters – served with fresh lemon sorbet –are the barometer for freshness, and they didn’t disappoint my dining companions who proclaimed them to be “fresher than a

wayward politician with a union credit card”! But if seafood isn’t your focus, there are still plenty of options such as the Bendele Farm Organic Duck – twice baked local organic free range duck served on kumara mash and fresh asparagus with a tantalising orange and apricot sauce or Lamb Cutlets – dukkah spiced lamb cutlets with honeyed pumpkin, seared baby spinach, Gympie green beans finished with a capsicum coulis. For a ‘non Italian’ restaurant, La Vida does a pretty good gnocchi. The Vegetarian Gnocchi – potato gnocchi, roasted sweet capsicum, toasted pine nuts, caramelised onion and crisp sage with a hint of Sagario extra virgin olive oil – comes in both entree or main sizes. Either serving size is a generous portion of a very filling, but perfectly cooked version of the good wife’s favourite dish. There wasn’t a hint of glueyness or glugginess and the blandness of the potato was overwhelmed by the charred character of the roasted capsicum and the tanginess of the caramelised onion and sage. But what perhaps impresses most about the venue is the wine list – there’s a solid range from most of the better wine-producing regions, but without the big mark-up that often occurs in upper end restaurants. We couldn’t go past the Hugo Reserve Shiraz, which is typically McLaren Vale

and exceptionally good value at $65 a bottle. Finding room for dessert wasn’t easy, but where there’s a will, there’s a way, so we let the belts out a notch and charged in to the Ameretto Panacotta – served with a peach glaze and toasted almonds – an exquisitely flavoursome sweet driven by the ameretto liqueur base, although with a little more firmness in the texture than a traditional panacotta. No matter what you think of the fare at La Vida, you could never fault the service – warm, welcoming and extremely tolerant of even the most querulous diners – thanks Carolyn, you made our Friday night! This restaurant was selected at random and the bill was paid for by the writer.

Forget screw tops and corks – glass bottle stoppers are the next big thing. The Vino-Lok was introduced to the European market almost 10 years ago, and now Australian winemakers are embracing them. The manufacturer claims that the Vino-Lok offers easy opening and closing, is leak-proof and will not affect the taste of the wine. And at least one Australian winegower is convinced. Barossa Valley winemaker Stephen Henschke has told The Shout – the online news service for the Australian hotel, bar and liquor industry – that he is happy after a five-year trial of his wines under glass cork closures. Henschke now uses the Vino-Lok on a few of his wines, and he has told The Shout he’ll never go back to cork. He also reckons the product looks beautiful.

1. Normans Holbrooks Road Chardonnay 2011 The awards just keep coming for the Normans Holbrook Road wines. Sure, the old wheel was a pretty impressive invention too, butt there’s no way the wheel goes es nearly as well with pizza. I feel sorry for people who never drink beer coz they wake up in n the morning and that’s the best they’ll ey’ll feel all day. This week we’re off to New w Zealand to sample a cracking little number called Moa Breakfast. It’s the world’s first breakfast beer. It’s important to acknowledge the differences between us Aussies and our Kiwi cousins. In NZ they say chilly bin and we say Esky. They ey say jandals and we say thongs. They say blind date, we say livestock. Righto, the obligatory Kiwi gag is done and so onto the Cuzzy Brew! Moa Breakfast is one of a dozen classy beers being produced by the Moa Brewing Company in Marlborough, NZ. Known for its

wines wines, Marlborough now lays claim to thi this ripping little brewery and althou although it’s not the flagship brew, the M Moa Breakfast is one of the best llagers I’ve ever necked. O Once you pop the cork, (yes i com it comes complete with a cork) yyou’ll yo u’l notice the stunning fruity arom aroma backed by a serious hit of w wh wheat and cherry to taste. It’s ea easily one of the most crisp and re refreshing beers I’ve had of la late. Based on the traditional E European breakfast beer, it’s a brew best reserved for special occasions, as it costs a bit. As far as beers that are up themselves go, this one’s worth a gamble. I give Moa Breakfast seven cheers out of 1 10 bro! Now that’s a beer worth getting out of bed for.

hey say a week is a long time in politics. Ask Kevin Rudd. Or Tony Abbott, for that matter. But a week isn’t always long enough to make up your mind about a car. It was with that in mind that Lexus offered us the chance to spend an extended eight-week period living with one of their hybrid models – the petrol-electric RX450h soft-roader. The RX450h costs barely more than its non-hybrid equivalent because its official fuel consumption is less than the Federal Government’s mandated 7L/100 kilometre threshold for the luxury car tax. It’s exceptionally smooth and quiet, and having two motors (the 220kW V6, plus the torquey electric motor) it’s even quicker to accelerate than its petrol-only sibling. Drawbacks? Well, you lose a touch of space to the electric batteries, although the cargo area of the RX isn’t badly compromised. Then there’s the privileges Lexus extends to its customers, which have little to do with the car itself, like an airport

valet service where they’ll collect your car from the airport valet car park, store it back at the dealership and then return it to the airport when you fly back into town. Perhaps my greatest overall impression after living with a Lexus hybrid over an extended period is how seamlessly the technology has been integrated into this car. The intervention of the electric engine

happens without you noticing it – save for the whisper-quiet operation which is a Lexus hallmark anyway. What the hybrid technology does, better than anything, is take an already great family SUV and make it make much better sense in the everyday city driving environment.

NICHE TIME FOR AUDI, DESPITE WORLD SLUMP WORDS Peter Atkinson WHILE entire countries teeter on the verge of bankruptcy, Europe’s carmakers are powering ahead. More luxury, more technology, more features, more models. Now Audi has created yet another new category – the luxury hatchback, which looks and drives like a sports car but sips fuel like a city car. The A7 Sportback is beautiful and amazingly practical, skyrocketing to the speed limit in a tick over six

seconds with its high-tech, tech, highoutput turbo diesel engine and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission – yet it returns fuel consumption figures to rival many four-cylinder hatchbacks, with an official combined consumption of 6L/100 kilometres. The A7, for the moment at least, will only be offered with the choice of two V6 engines – the turbo-diesel we’ve tested here and

a supercharged petrol V6. The remarkable performance and efficiency figures of both engines are achieved partly through the A7’s lightweight construction – about 30 per cent of the vehicle is cast from aluminium. A stop-start system, which shuts down the engine while stopped in traffic; a kinetic energy recovery and thermal management also contribute to the fuel-efficiency of both engines. The super-efficient seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission also enhances the car’s performance and fuel-saving efforts – driving the power through Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The A7 feels well anchored to the road, but lacks the same dynamic feedback and steering feel of its German rivals. The ride, though, is well resolved and it never feels rushed or unsettled in sudden changes of

direction, even for what is quite a large machine. Inside, the A7 debuts a new look for Audi’s cockpit presentation. It’s perhaps the best-looking Audi interior we’ve seen, complemented by a new, classy presentation of the instrument cluster which integrates LED displays for vehicle management, satellite navigation and entertainment systems, with stylish chrome-rimmed speedo and tacho. HOLDEN CHARGES INTO THE FUTURE WITH ELECTRIC VOLT WORDS Peter Atkinson I HAVE seen the future and I’m pleased to report it’s pretty cool. I speak of the Holden Volt. The car that is set to launch Australians down the path of electric-powered, zero-emissions motoring. Holden claims the Volt is the first green car to combine the fuelefficiency and planet-friendliness of an electric vehicle without the so-called ‘range anxiety’. It has a four-cylinder engine that acts as a back-up generator when the Volt’s batteries run down, so it can travel up to 80 kilometres on electric power alone, before the petrol engine is activated. Holden says it will take about four hours to charge the Volt, using a regular power point in your home, at a cost of about $2.50 per recharge. Because the 200 kilograms of lithium ion batteries are situated low in the car’s floor, it feels nicely anchored and turns with a minimum of body roll.

Electric Vehicle Trial

With the T-shaped battery cell taking up the space normally inhabited by a car’s transmission tunnel, the Volt has only four seats – buckets, front and back. The interior is futuristic, seats are leather and interior finishes are excellent. So how much will it cost to step into this futuristic world? Holden isn’t saying yet, but a price tag of, say, $60,000 would not put the Volt out of the reckoning of many of us.

Particularly when you consider that, for city-based owners, it could all but eliminate your fuel bill for much of the year. MAKE/MODEL HOLDEN VOLT BOTTOM LINE Pricing not yet available. Volt will not go on sale in Australia until late 2012.

Holden has announced it has joined the Victorian Government’s Electric Vehicle Trial with its internal fleet of extended-range electric Volt vehicles. The announcement has been made during its national Energy and Environment Week. As part of the partnership, Holden will supply recharge data collected from its internal fleet before Volt goes on sale later this year. Holden will also be conducting consumer education activities throughout the trial to promote awareness and understanding of electric vehicles and their benefits. Holden director – energy and environment, Richard Marshall, says joining the Victorian Electric Vehicle Trial would help to grow consumer awareness of emerging vehicle technologies.

An original Milano Ivory 1955 Holden FJ Ute – once the cheapest new Holden you could buy – sold after strong floor and phone bidding for $42,000. The vehicle fetched nearly double its pre-sale estimate due to its virtually unmodified condition. As well as cutting costs for buyers, the State Government has also pledged to cut red tape when it comes to housing sales. Premier Campbell Newman has made clear his intention to scrap the sustainability declaration, which he says “added nothing but paperwork to house sales”. In an April media release, Newman said abolishing the document – which sellers have been required by law to present to prospective buyers – is part of the State Government’s ongoing process of “streamlining home sale contracts and warning statements to simplify the process without removing safeguards.”

just dropping interest rates. Structural reform, not cyclical tinkering, is urgently needed. Housing isn’t the only engine that desperately needs a major overhaul. Australia’s structural problems require welfare, tax, regulatory and IR reform. Further interest rate cuts might happen but there is a real risk of putting the monetary policy cart before the structural reform horse. Roll on the next federal election – and we must hope for a government seriously interested in economic reform. And despite the current absolute economic incompetence, the ABS’s latest quarterly health check on corporate Australia found that although profits were down, sales, inventory and wages all grew at a reasonable rate during the first three months of this year. In fact, we are creaming most of the world. Australia’s annual growth pace of 4.3 per cent compares with 1.9 per cent in the US; a zero to negative result in the eurozone; a 0.1 per cent contraction in the UK (and I thought it was just the crappy music at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee that was putting the pucker on Her Majesty’s face) and 2.6 per cent growth (yes growth) in Japan. China is currently growing at 8.1 per cent and India by 5.3 per cent. In short, Australia is a country that barely understands, let alone appreciates, its own luck. LONG-TERM FUTURE While Matusik thinks we all need to look on the sunny side, there’s no doubt population density and housing affordability will continue to be contentious issues. High-density living is often touted as the solution, but for those living outside urban areas, such as here on the Coast, the term often conjures images of residents packed in like sardines without access to adequate facilities. Peter Folker, director of local town planning firm Dillon Folker Stephens, says while higher-density living is inherent to the State Government’s new regional plans – especially in large new estates such as Palmview and Caloundra South – planners and developers will need to adopt a more creative and holistic approach in the future. “In a typical situation, the best way to increase density is to have smaller lots and provide a variety of product type – detached houses on much smaller lots, and promoting the duplex style, having small clusters of duplexes,” Folker says. Fitzgibbon Chase, a Brisbane development by the state-owned Urban Land Development Authority, is aiming to do this, with freehold lots as small as 70 square metres. “Fitzgibbon Chase has examples from single, detached homes through to triplexes. Kawana Island has a lot of the smaller lot stuff, down to 10- and even 6.5-metre frontages.” Folker says while 70-metre lots are going well beyond (or below) what we’ve seen here on the Coast, they are an indication of where housing will lead in certain circumstances. “It’s imperative at a regional level for developers to look at providing different housing products, first

with a view to increasing density but secondly to provide more affordable living. This is not just the price of housing but also where it is – whether it is close to work, transport and shops. These are things the government and developers are looking at, and will continue to evolve in new developments.” Folker says the key to preventing a panic about higher densities is to ensure homes and estates are well integrated and have a sense of community. “You cannot put this formula of housing in any location,” he says. “It is about having transport and centres close by – for example at Fitzgibbon Chase every house is within 400 metres of a park or some sort of facility. And locally, Kawana Island is beautifully designed – the streetscape has been very well designed and that’s a big part of it.” And while our communities may be evolving, Folker says he can’t see the desire to own a traditional home dying out any time soon. “We need to recognise that there’s still a predominant market for a single detached house – the autonomy that owning your own land and owning your own home brings. I can’t see this disappearing in the near future, but I think there will be a move toward offering greater variety.”
