Osong BioValley Master Plan - Bio Urbanism Chungbuk, Korea
Osong BioValley is sponsored by Chungcheongbuk-do to explore unique and creative ideas for the Master Plan of a High-Tech Medical Cluster, Osong Biotechnopolis and Commercial Areas. The design concept BioUrbanism, is a new way of understanding cities through one of the oldest science – human biology. BioUrbanism views cities as collections of interconnected systems (skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and lymphatic) - both natural and man-made - that work in unison, functioning as a living, breathing urban landscape. The planning approach for the Smart City is a Network composite of three main ideas. The Smart Growth Boundary which aims to control future sprawl of Osong BioValley by defining a greenbelt around the city composed by the mountains, existing rice fields, and existing traditional village. The Creative Scientific Community Paradigm and Livable Urban Center Model are beliefs that Osong BioValley’s success depends largely on its residents. A cosmopolitan city in the 21st Century must have characteristics that make it attractive to the Creative Class – high quality education, walkable community, affordable housing, access to open space and recreation, pristine living environment, and opportunities to interact with other members of the Creative Class. The most important characteristic is a Livable Urban Center – a “one-stop-shop” Town Center with office incubator, retail, housing, open space, tourism, medical facilities, arts and culture, and administrative services, all anchored by the KTX Transit Hub.
