Virginia State Capitol Master Plan Richmond, Virginia
The historic city of Richmond, Virginia draws over 2 million visitors each year, with an ever-increasing proportion of them visiting the State Capitol Building. The proposed master plan update combined urban design concepts generated by many City and Federal stakeholders with plans for state office space. The first stage of the master plan included a schematic design and cost estimate for the renovation of the historic capitol building designed by Thomas Jefferson in 2007. The second stage focused on the surrounding Capitol Square area. The plan update included a long-range program to contribute to the City of Richmond and the Commonwealth’s efforts to revitalize downtown, promote tourism and preserve historic treasures. The design approach provided a sustainable planning and design framework for significant renovation and new construction investment within a ten-year period including the design of a new parking garage on Broad & 9th Streets. Sensitivity to the historic context and downtown Richmond real estate market forces were critical to the success of the master plan.
