5 Places to

Shop For Christmas Without Breaking the Bank Christmas is without a doubt the most joyful and wonderful time of the year. After all it combines the four Fs-Family, Friends, food and Fun! However, when it comes to Christmas shopping our holiday cheer can easily end up turned into a holiday nightmare, especially for our wallets and bank accounts. Don’t fret here are five go-to places to shop to avoid sticker shock and breaking the bank. eBay: I know you’re probably thinking that eBay is used for selling second hand items, but the site has changed over the years. While you can still purchased used items in

pretty decent condition, a lot of big name brands like Dell now have official online ebay outlet stores. You no longer need to the leave the comforts of your own home to purchase products from your favorite brands. Also, eBay offers daily deals on a variety of products. Most items featured in the daily deals are offered with discounts of 50% off or more the original price and include free shipping. You also have the option to shop category. Thrift Stores: Over the past few years, thrift stores and consignment shops have gained great popularity. Stores like Goodwill and the

Salvation Army have become known as the best spots to hunt for designer goods. Often times when stores have too much merchandise from season and can’t sell it before they have stock for another season, they donate the clothing to local thrift shops for a tax write-off. Thus, you could score a brand new pair of your favorite designer shoes upwards of 70% off the original purchase price. Discount Retailers: Like thrift stores, TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Nordstrom Rack are all great places to shop for designer goods.

From shoes and clothing to cookware and furniture, discount retailers are a great place for one stop shopping. Their merchandise is usually heavily discounted. You can rack up on presents as well as savings. Etsy.com: If you’re looking to purchase gifts that are unqiue, custom or one of a kind, Etsy is place to shop. About 90% of the items sold on this online shopping mall are handmade. No matter who’s on your Christmas list, you’re sure to find something on Etsy that fits their personality and that is reasonable priced. You’ll discover everything from homemade food goods to toys made by hand. With the

holidays upon us, many shop owners are slashing already reasonable prices and offering discounted to free shipping on their merchandise.

ing sites like Groupon and Plum District to offer special deals and you’re in for some pretty awesome savings that your wallet will thank you for later.

Small Businesses: Often times the best treasures and best prices are right under our noses. Locally owned shops and small businesses not only often cheaper prices, but also offer items and designs that you won’t find in big name stores. And because small business owners are often times in charge of their own marketing and operation procedures, they tend to have better and longer sales during the holiday season. Couple that with the fact that small businesses are also us-

So, now that you know that best places to get more bang for your buck this holiday season, breathe easy and get started making those gift lists. Happy shopping! Seriously Na 1. How did you come up with the name of your blog and business? I take being natural seriously because having healthy hair is important to me, like many women. The more natural I am, in whatever state possible, and the stronger my hair is makes me feel healthier on the inside. Being natural allows me to be truly ME. Becoming natural at 35 years old was liberating and so profound that I had and still do take it very seriously.

2. Natural Hair is beautiful but many women do not embrace it. Why do you think that is? Like me, many Women of color were not taught how to take care of their hair in its natural state. We learned at a very young age to alter the state or texture of our hair and sadly, that became our norm. We have the mindset that our hair is too difficult to handle naturally and it may not seem beautiful to others. The media, fashion and beauty magazines do not glamourize curly/coily/kinky hair. In addition, the older we become the less likely we are to change or try new things. 3. In your shop, I see you have some beautiful shirts in different colors. Do you customize shirts for customers or do you just sell what is in the shop? The shop is very new so as I create new items I am thinking of what many Women of Color would want to wear to embrace their hair and their beauty. Not everyone is going to like or want the same thing so yes I am more than willing to customize a shirt for someone if the request is possible to make. 4. What makes your business stand out from other businesses similar to yours? I am creating more than just words on clothing; I am creating a brand for Seriously Natural. The shop represents the colorful personality of the blog, which is a celebration of natural hair, beauty and style. I am bringing such an array of sayings and stylish colors that women from all age groups would love to wear. 5. What’s most important to you in your work? I feel strongly about being honest and staying reliable. I have a personal rule to never post rumors or borrowing from someone else’s work without giving proper credit. I want my readers as well as my customers to know that they can trust what I say, do and sell.

atural

If I unintentionally pass inaccurate information along, I will rectify the post immediately and if a customer is unhappy with a purchase, they can be made whole in a timely manner. 6. The winter is here what are some hair tips that you have that works for you and may work for other for the winter upkeep of their hair? I am a wash and go fiend and live in Denver, Colorado. I wear my wash and go year round with no issues but I understand not everyone subscribes to that way of thinking. Winter does not provide the moisture in the air as the warmer months do. I advise incorporating protective styles with your ends tucked away. Adding glycerin to your spray bottle will pull the limited moisture out of the air to your hair as well. In addition, if you do wash and go, the hats you wear should have a silk or satin lining or drape a stylish scarf over your damp hair then you can wear any hat you prefer. All of this is to prevent dry brittle hair, which causes breakage. 7. What’s the best part of being natural for you? Freedom. Freedom to wear my hair in its natural state and have the right products for my tresses. There is a real love for natural hair and naturals are being embraced everywhere. 8. What are your future goals for the company? To continue creating great clothing for Women of color who are beautiful and want to wear clothing that expresses that. Right now, we have several tops to choose from but I want to incorporate more accessories like hats, scarves, and jewelry. The goal of the Seriously Natural boutique is to allow all women to feel comfortable, beautiful and stylish. Sabrina Perkins is a freelance writer, full-time blogger and the owner of Seriously Natural Boutique where she creates beautiful clothing for Women of Color. She has had featured articles on Black Girl Long Hair, Curly Nikki and Blackhairinformation.com while keeping up with her own blog, seriouslynatural.org. Her blog’s focus is on Natural hair, beauty and style. She is married, a mother of two teenagers and has a BA in Political Science and a Master’s in Public Administration. T’is the season, we celebrate and spend time with our families. The season where couples; take their new love interest home, to meet their families. When people become selfless and volunteer their time in their communities to feed the hungry, give supplies to the needy, care for the sick, spend time with the orphans and visit the prisoners. Sending cards and gifts to all those they love or want to share love with. It’s a season where love is displayed freely by most of mankind, without fear, around the world. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 The greatest gift that we could have ever received was when this love was born. This love would be far greater than any gift underneath our Christmas trees. This love sacrificed His body for us; to free us from all of our sins. So, that we could live life abundantly and be bright lights amongst the world. It shows us how to live life through His words and teachings. It is like no other. You can’t find it in a store. You can’t find it packaged underneath a tree. You can’t stick a bow on it. This love is unsurpassable; above all that we could ever think or imagine a love to be. Nothing could ever compare to this love. It is patient and kind. It keeps no record of wrongs; to all those who seek forgiveness of their sins. It forgives. It doesn’t delight in evil but rejoices with the Truth. It always protects. It gives hope for tomorrow. It is powerful in which; it heals the sick, raises the dead, cast out devils, calms the storms by giving peace to our souls. It gives eternal life to all those who believe in Him. It is unconditional and selfless. It never fails. This love is the reason Christians all around the world celebrate Christmas. In and out of season, it’s a gift that keeps giving. When this love was born, it was named Jesus. Written By: Coasta Graham www.coastag.com

Christmas Tradition The Country Club Plaza Lighting Ceremony Every year after the turkey, greens, macaroni & cheese and cranberry sauce is gone, sweet potato pie has been eaten and my family has watched football, there is one tradition that we have always looked forward to. The annual lighting ceremony at the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO. It seemed like everyone in the city would head over to the “Plaza” to line up on the streets for the lighting ceremony. It would be people everywhere, shoulder to shoulder, children on their dad’s back so they can see. It’s the midwest, so we were bundled and warm,

chatting about their day and what they had for dinner. The Plaza Lights *started in 1925 with a single string of 16 lights over a doorway. They increased it to a full lighting ceremony in 1930*. Every year the lights are installed and tested the day before Thanksgiving and they stay up until the third week in January. After the lighting ceremony, the Plaza has more traffic than it normally does because the lights draw crowds and tourists during that time of the year.

The Plaza is an upscale shopping and residential area. It’s not a mall, more of an experience. It has upscale shops, unique shops, theaters and entertainment. The residential areas are about the same too, the homes grand, beautiful and expensive as well as apartment buildings that were reasonable to upscale.

One year I was dating a guy who had a friend that lived on the Plaza. We went over to their apartment for a lighting ceremony party. Most of the people that lived near the plaza would have a gatherings like this at their home. We had food, drinks, played games until it was time to gather around the windows for the ceremony, which was at 7:00pm. This was in the 80s, before all the electronics that we use now, it would have been great to capture that on video. It’s one of my best memories of the lighting ceremony. All the games and partying stopped while we all stood around anticipating the moment the lights come on for the official start of the Christmas season. After the lights came on, we all toasted to the occasion and got back to our good times. When I was a child, it was hard to see because most of the adults blocked your view. The best view was actually when you were further away from the shopping district because you could see the when all the lights came on at once. Your would hear cheers and laughter because we all were so excited about the lights coming on. I tried my best to keep that tradition up but as time passed and the greater Kansas City area grew, it became almost a health hazard to be down there on Thanksgiving night. I tried to take my girls down when they were smaller, by the time we found a place to park, they were asleep so we didn’t stay. We would always go visit the area several weeks after to take in the spirit of the holiday sea son. They were still excited and enjoyed seeing the lights. It wasn’t the same as being down there on Thanksgiving night, but I wanted them to experience what I enjoyed so much, from a small child to an adult. It would take hours to drive through the area for just a glimpse and the ambiance of the tradition. When were couldn’t make it down for the ceremony, we would watch it on TV. The local news reporters would find a child in the audience back in the day to come on stage hit the switch. That tradition has been replaced with local celebrities. At one time the city was trying to make it a national event and televise all over the country. I’m not sure if everyone in the US would understand our excitement about some Christmas lights in a shopping district, probably why it never happened. I live in St Louis now and I really I miss that tradition, something I used to take for granted. Now after Thanksgiving dinner, I clean up and go to bed because I’m tired….and no I don’t do Black Friday sales. **footnote info ~ Wikipedia** Written by Whitney Eiland http://cafemochareflections.com/ https://www.etsy.com/shop/AVEAccessories

Holiday Hosting by Trish Wells

The Holidays are once again upon us. Which Means…… It’s Time To Decorate! Yes; you going up in the attic, or sending your spouse or kids. Digging in the closets and pulling boxes out of storage to prepare for your Big Décor Extravaganza. But to me, it seems that people tend to decorate their yards, Christmas Trees mantles etc., but what about their dining room tables? For most of us we will have guest over, and we should want them to experience the Holiday Season even down to the table design. Decorating Shopping Tip: Always save money thru the year so that you can buy your Christmas items on sale when the season ends. Sometimes you may run the risk of your item being gone, and if so you may want to purchase it…But for the most part some items will still be there and you can get all your decorations at good discounts. Make sure you buy timeless things that can carry over with the ever changing trends… most people don’t want to buy all new items every year. Ok, So your question is…. How do I decorate my table? Well I have 4 tips that will help you with this process:

1. Create your color scheme: You don’t have to have a lot of money or be a world famous designer to create a luxurious space. And you are not tied down to limited options. Yes we are familiar with the traditional colors, green, blue, red, gold and silver. But, this is a new era…colors have evolved and now it’s whatever Your color of choice may be.

01. Soluptas atqui volorecabo. 02. Harita volenime vendebisi non porem sintion et hariatium. 03. Atqui volorecabo harita volenime vendebisi. 04. Soluptas atqui volorecab.

Note: When choosing accents like napkins, napkin rings, tablecloths etc. they do not have to match, but it must coordinate. 2. Create your focal point: This would be your centerpiece. The sky is the limit for this design. You have the option of putting your personality to work. You want to have a conversation piece as well as a nice blend of the other elements in the design. Your centerpiece can be as extravagant or as simple as you desire.

3. Dinnerware Dinnerware adds a whole other element in and of itself. Depending on the type of gathering that you are having, you will want to dress your table accordingly.

And the picture on the end is paper goods from Party City‌Wow! Paper has come a long way 4. A Personal Touch: You can make each guest fill special by acknowledging their presence with place cards‌ You can use just about anything, to add a touch of whimsy to your card holders. What this does is it allows your guest to feel like they where strategically being thought of and that you purposely designed with them in mind.

Remember you are the host and your decor should reflect you; at the same time drawing your guest in to feel the season of Love and giving. HAPPY HOLIDAYS and HAPPY DECORATING! Trish Wells Designs by Trish Various pictures used for examples

Candy Cake Company What inspired you to create Candy Cake Company? Entrepreneurship was always on my involved cooking and or baking was important to me. In starting your own business what have you found to be the most difficult? Time radar but when my son came, it became an obsession rather than an option. As a new mother, I was looking for an opportunity that would allow me the flexibility to be available to my son. I am also a self professed foodie and I love to cook so, embarking on a business endeavor that management. Having to share my time between my son and my business is a constant struggle. I have come to realize that I can only do so much and that if something doesn’t get done at the end of the day its not the end of the world. How are you making strides to overcome your time management hurdle? I must make a To Do List daily. If I am working on something, I try to finish it before moving on to the next task. I make it a point to carry a notebook that I use to jot down ideas and impromptu things that must be done. Getting these things out of my head and on my paper keeps my head clear and me productive. How are you able to balance your business and family life being a single mother? Help and support from family and friends has been a huge factor in my success. I am often frustrated at the situation, and the sacrifices that I have to make on a daily basis to make my dreams come true. My mindset at this point is I have to do this for us, not pushing forward isn’t an option. Where do you see Candy Cake Company in the next five years? I would like for CCC to be a recognizable go to brand amongst the creme de la creme of wedding and event planners within the metropolitan Atlanta area. Do you wear an apron when you bake? Yes, it has ruffles on it and I also wear a scarf! Do you listen to music when you bake, if yes what type? Yes, I listen to whatever is on the radio, mostly R&B Will you teach your son to cook? Most definately, men that cook are the bomb! One interesting tidbit regarding your baking ritual? When I bake I narrate each step in the process as if I am hosting a television show! The 25th hour of Procratination Angel Regis-Felix

So, here it is: the last quarter of the year, holiday season is in full swing, kids are settled in their school flow, the Christmas list is getting longer and not mention your patience is getting thinner and the frowns on your face are getting deeper…hey, it’s all in a day’s work, right? We get it, life happens and it’s on a continuous shift regardless if we are actively participating or not. Well, well, well! Remember that list you wrote on crisp, brand new paper or even stored away in that brand new file in your head last year? What happened to it? Please give me a minute to straighten up and listen intently to the wonderful world of procrastination… (Cue violins). We are so comfortable in procrastinating that we even procrastinate at the last minute. Yes, I understand that role because WE have all done it in some form or fashion in our own lives – and some still practice the fine art of procrastination to avoid holding themselves accountable in their own lives. I have learned that we all have the same 24 hours in a day (shocker right?) regardless if we choose to use it all up sleeping, playing, working or a combination of all three. How we choose to use those hours is all by choice, but that’s all we are blessed with on a daily basis to do with as we please. How many times have we heard, “there’s just not enough time in the day”… pardon me? There is enough time, we just utilize and manage it haphazardly or waste the time away engaging in irrelevant and sometimes ineffective activities, thus allowing for the procrastination brigade to consume us with excuses. If we allow every little bit of life’s occurrences to hinder us from pursuing our goals or allowing our insecurities and limiting mindset to strangle and immobilize us, we have given up on taking an active role in the natural shift that is occurring all around us. When was the last time you entrusted yourself enough to do something daring, something beyond your comfort zone or even took a leap into the unknown and stepped out on faith? We are our own saboteurs and will sometimes conjure up every type of excuse to prevent ourselves from actually getting active and subsequently taking action in our own lives. As we are all very much aware that time lost can never be retrieved, but what we do, starting now, does count towards our own progression in life. We are all capable of changing and accepting change if we are convicted enough and have adopted that unapologetically charged audacity to want to succeed. You deserve to experience and become the author of your own success and not be so quick to allow your procrastinating mindset to dictate your path in life. This is the last quarter, so the year is not over yet. With that said allow yourself some room to step out into the unknown, relinquish that procrastinating crutch and give yourself permission to recognize the paradigm shift that’s taking hold all around you and subsequently inviting your participation therein. Take hold, take part and take heed in all that is occurring around you and see your mindset evolve. Experience the changes in your life as you actively participate in it with eyes wide open and your heart open to receive and take it all in. Adopt a new, effective and inspired behavior that will take you into the New Year with a renewed sense of self and purpose. You are in the driver’s seat, so let go of that backseat driver mentally – take action! Your time is now! Shed all of those limiting behaviors and embrace the new you - procrastination free! Blessings!

Avoiding Overindulgence during the Holidays

First, let me go ahead and be the first to confess I LOVE the holiday season and EVERYTHING that comes with it. The music, smells, trees, spirit, gifts, the fa-la-lala, and the YUMMY goodness that is at every holiday gathering! Yes, I’m talking all things from appetizer to dessert. BRING IT ON!! Okay, now that I got that out of the way. Let’s talk moderation, yes it is possible. I have a few suggestions that I believe might help you avoid overindulging during the holiday season. • Drink water before you start to dig in! This can help give you a more full sensation. • Use the small plate, when indulging in appetizers & desserts. Don’t pile the food on. Think of it as an onetime sampler plate. Pick & choose only what you most want to try. • Don’t eat in the kitchen, or where the food is being kept. Your eyes will continually play tricks on you and before you know it you’ve eaten WAY MORE than you intended. • Remember wine & cocktails have calories too! Although it’s not printed on the bottle, a glass of your favorite spirits may have 90 calories or 300+ calories. • Don’t be afraid of the veggie tray. Sprinkle in a few (a handful) vegetables to help fill your plate. Keep the dips and sauces to a minimum. • If you must go back for more, try drinking another glass (or even a bottle) of water. • Tell others that you are trying to watch your intake; this will help you be a little more accountable for your actions. • Those of you who lost weight this year, now is not the time to over reward yourself! Dedicate one item as your reward at the gathering. ONE! You don’t want to start the next year the way you did this year because of the holidays. • Remember it is okay to say no to taste testing EVERYTHING offered. I know it is easy to want to try everything mentioned to you but it is okay to say no thank you. So there you have it, just a few quick suggestions to avoid going overboard at the holiday parties. What are some suggestions that you have to keep from making the holiday gatherings your seasonal buffets? Go ahead and tell us. We are listening. IT’S ALWAYS BETTER TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE. IT’S TRULY AN AMAZING BLESSING

I know the first question that one might ask is “how could an individual who has received everything that she ever asked for, wanted or needed could ever understand the importance of giving?” That question can be answered with a pure and honest heart. I will happily be the first to admit that I have been truly blessed and I have never taken anything that I have received for granted. Each person who has come into my life for a reason or a season and know me as an individual, know that I was spoiled beyond rotten as a child, but people who know me know that I was also blessed with amazing parents who gave me everything and just a little something more – unique one-of-a-kind morals and values. You can’t buy these types of morals and values. They are not just any morals and values, but a set of rules that are deeply rooted that will stand forever. My morals and values were instilled in me at a very young age and I am so proud to say that I have stayed true to them for dear life. So to finish answering the question in the beginning of the article, just because I have been blessed throughout my life doesn’t mean that I’m spoiled, selfish, and wouldn’t understand, it just means I have been blessed in receiving. Even though I have been blessed in receiving, I have also been blessed to continually give and I strongly feel now is the time to give even more. My parents always taught me that when one is in need of help, kindly help. There are times when people don’t have money to give because they might be struggling themselves, but it’s not always about money. I have come to realize that by giving of your time can be one of the best gifts that you can give a person. There are a million and one ways you can give of your time. It’s sad to say that there are thousands of kids sitting in either a girls or boys home who would love to have a big sister or a big brother who can come through and give them some much needed encouragement and motivation, elderly individuals who just need someone to check up on them and make sure everything is ok, and sick individuals who are in the hospital not knowing when they will be able to return home. Sometimes a simple talk can truly brighten up an individual’s day. Let’s not forget that you can give of your time by serving food at a shelter for the homeless. If we take the time to look and realize there are homeless people right under our nose, we will easily see why giving is so needed. Sometimes we walk around too proud to see what is lying beneath us to realize that someone is really in need of some help. We must all remember that time is valuable and something that is so needed by so many people. I really believe that more time shared helping someone can truly make a huge difference in our communities, life, and the world. Something that I continually stress is that when you have and are able to give from the heart, never look for that person to give back in return. You should never ask for anything in return because if God gave it to you to give, than it’s meant for you to give. God blessed you, so be kind hearted and bless the next person. Remember it’s not always about money. Donate clothes, food, furnishings, or your time. When a person has to leave a shelter to start all over, the furnishings that we sit on the side of the curb seems like a million dollar piece to them. Trust me when I say that I’m guilty! I had to learn about sitting good quality stuff on the side of the road. Also remember to give because your heart is filled with the love of God and because God gave you, give with a smile to know that you are helping someone who may be down and out and never know where their next meal may be coming from, and also give to make a difference. I love to express how God gave all of us something so unique – he gave us his only begotten son. He gave us his son so that we could have a second chance at life. That alone should be enough reasons why one should give. That time is now!

I must end this article by mentioning a very close friend of mine that I have known for a very long time. Her name is Miss Eunita Garrett. This is one of the sweetest women that you will ever want to meet. As long as I have known her, her heart has been set on God and God only. To make a long story short, one day I was on the phone with Eunita and she was telling me how she go out each month and feed the homeless. Even though I have known her for as long as I have, I didn’t know that she had added something so amazing to her life. She started talking about the homeless and also started explaining to me that I would be totally shocked at how many homeless people were living right under our nose and we never even realize it. She continued on and explained to me about how it is so easy and quick for one to become so judgmental and say that “if I can get up and go to work every day then so should these people.” Eunita explained to me and said, “Kim, until someone has heard these people stories of why they are on the streets or walked in their shoes, we should not be so quick to judge.” Eunita continually goes out each month rain or shine and feed the homeless. Even though she is not employed; she uses what money she has and donations to prepare food at her home to feed people that she never met in her life. Eunita has really made a difference in these individuals life. I have had the pleasure of helping Miss Eunita in her passion for helping the homeless. Each month she calls me in advance to let me know what will be on the menu. Myself, Norma Hicks, as well as close friends and church members of Miss Eunita make sure that she gets what she needs to prepare her meals. It’s a blessing to help Miss Eunita and she is truly a woman after Gods heart and a woman with a true passion that’s on a mission to change the world. Whether you decide to take the time to bless someone with items that you know longer have a need for or bless someone by sharing your time is something that will change that individual’s life forever. I know that the Holidays are around the corner, but let’s not only wait until the Holidays to give, let’s give throughout the year. If it’s your first time giving or you have been giving for years, please continue to give. It’s always better to give than to receive. It’s truly an amazing blessing.
