Bingley MOT welcomes Hayley to the team Hayley Cochrane, wife to business owner Simon is now part owner of Bingley MOT & Repair Centre. Hayley began working at the garage in January 2012. Previously Hayley worked as an optician for an independent optical company, to which she had a loyal patient base from understanding the importance of the customer journey and exceeding customers expectations. Hayley’s job role was to ensure that customers old and new had the very best experience possible. Hayley said she understood from having a limited knowledge in mechanics that taking your car to a garage can be a daunting experience. Since most of us know next to nothing about the mechanics of our vehicles, so we’re unsure if we’re getting a fair deal or being ripped off? More than a third of car owners say they have been left unhappy by a garage experience, according to roadside assistance company Green Flag. Therefore, my primary job role is to shop around! Prices can vary considerably from one supplier of car parts to another, so I get a quotes from at least 6 different suppliers and then negotiate to get the best price on parts possible so I can pass the benefits onto the customer. The benefit to Bingley mot is, customer retention, the customer receives the best price possible and in exchange we have the customers trust and loyalty. Since Hayley has joined Bingley MOT, they have seen an considerable increase in women coming to the garage for their car repairing. One female customers comments was that “she found Hayley pleasant to deal with, and felt at ease with her. Hayley explained everything she needed to know about the problem with her car, and made sure that the car was ready on time”. Bingley MOT has always been known as a family run business with strong family values; those of customer service, loyalty and retention. They consider themselves trustworthy, sincere and honest in all communications. They are also part of the good garage scheme, which automatically means you are in good hands. The other side to the business is car sales. SC 8

Car Sales, also situated on Keighley Road. Simon recently commented “At SC Car Sales, it is fundamental to us that you have the confidence and peace of mind knowing your new car will be just perfect with no hidden defects. Which disappointingly can happen when purchasing a vehicle from many car sales companies. Some businesses don’t have the mechanical background to ensure your car is not only road worthy but also will have the maximum longevity”. At SC Car Sales we understands that it is one of the most important decisions a person can make, after buying a house. Therefore we want to make sure that your buying experience with us is a pleasant one”. Bingley MOT offers you a free alternative to selling privately or part-exchanging, and take away the stress and cost of selling your vehicle. For a free, no obligation quotation, please contact Simon Cochrane on 01274 511400. Bingley MOT and SC Car Sales also offer the following services. • Used car sales • MOT • Servicing • Insurance • Warranty • cars part exchanged or bought for cash

A note from your local MP Philip Davies Happy New Year

I am acutely aware that 2013 has been another tough year for many people as the country gradually digs itself out of the huge economic and financial hole we were in. Unfortunately there are no painless ways to get ourselves out of such a mess and I have no doubt that 2014 will again be a very difficult year for everyone. Even after taking many difficult decisions the Government is still borrowing around £110bn a year, although that is much better than the £158bn a year borrowing that this Government inherited from its predecessor. On a positive note unemployment has come down considerably both locally and nationally over the past year, and I very much hope that trend continues throughout 2014. The improved employment numbers are not just statistics; they are a personal triumph for every individual who gets a job and their families. We should never forget the personal impact on the people who feature in all Government statistics.

In the Bingley area, I hope to see the old Bradford & Bingley building knocked down quickly by Sainsbury’s and sold on as soon as possible to another developer – ideally to be used for an attractive retail offer which will bring footfall into the town centre to help the other local businesses. I also hope that Aldi will be able to open their new proposed store in Bingley before the end of 2014. Once again local residents in Micklethwaite find themselves facing another planning application at Sty Lane and I will continue to do all I can to support the Greenhill Action Group in their fight to prevent it. I will also do my best to persuade the Council to have a rethink on taking away a swimming pool in Bingley and other local amenities. I will always fight to ensure the Council never forgets the needs of Bingley and the importance of maintaining its own distinct identity. It is a tremendous honour to represent the Shipley constituency and again in 2014

ns o i t u l o s e R 2014

I will continue to do all I can to hold the Government to account and speak out on those issues that most affect and concern my constituents. I will also continue to strive to give my constituents the best possible service. If I can ever be of any help to any of my constituents, or if any of them want to share their views with me on any issue, I will always be delighted to hear from them.

Walks

Bingley and the St Ives Estate Great views of Airedale from a viewpoint known as the Druid’s Altar. Distance: 6 miles

Minimum time: 3 hours

1 Walk downhill from the centre of Bingley, towards the church. Go left ate traffic lights, passing the Old White Horse pub, on to Millgate. Cross the River Aire and take the first right, Ireland Street. Swing immediately right and then left to join a riverside track. Very soon you seem to have swapped town for country. Bear right in front of Ravenroyd Farm, to pass between other farm buildings and continue on a walled track. Pass another house, Cophurst, and carry on through successive pastures beside a wood. 2 Leaving the trees, the ongoing track continues past Marley Farm to end over a stile and stream on to a track by Blakey Cottage. Go left, bypassing a ford to follow the rough track uphill. As it later swings into a farm, bear right on a grass trail that winds up the bracken-clad slope, ultimately arriving at a small gate into thicker woodland. A narrow path rises on through the trees. Bear right and then left at successive forks to reach level ground at the top of the wood beside a wall running on your right. Eventually, after crossing a track, the path leads to a rocky outcrop, known as the Druid’s Altar, which offers splendid views. 3 Bear right, after the rocks, to come to a meeting of tracks. Go through a gap in the wall opposite, on to a walled track into the St Ives Estate. Leave immediately through a kissing gate on the right on to a path that runs pleasantly for 0.5 mile within Race Course Plantation. Ignoring the kissing gate leading out at the end, go left, now descending, initially still within threes through a golf course and then at the edge of open heather moor. When the accompanying wall later turns away, bear right with the main path, dropping through wood once more to come upon Lady Blantyre’s Rock. 4 Ignoring side-tracks, follow the path downhill, to Coppice Pond. Join a metalled road to bear left, passing Reader’s Tea Room, the golf clubhouse and then, set back on the right, St Ives Mansion. 5 Beyond the house, curve right and left to follow the main drive downhill for 0.5 mile. Just after passing a car park, take a path left into woodland. Keep right where it immediately forks, to reach the B6429, the Bingley to Cullingworth road. Cross it and continue downhill on narrow Beckfoot Lane. After houses the land becomes an unmade track leading down to a delectable spot: here you will find Beckfoot Farm, in a wooded setting by Harden Beck, with a ford and an old packhorse bridge that dates back to 1723. 6 Cross the bridge and bear left at Beckfoot Farm, 12

|

to find allotments on your left. Where the allotments end, take a path to the left which leads to a metal footbridge over the River Aire and into Myrtle Park. Walk ahead through the park to arrive once again in the centre of Bingley. Bingley and the Five Rise Locks Walkers with an interest in canal history may want to extend the above walk to include a visit to Bingley’s famous ‘staircase’ of locks, which is Bingley’s bestknown landmark. Access from the centre of Bingley is down Park Road. Cross the canal and take a path to the left that leads you to the tow path. The Three-Rise Locks are just a short wallk of 274m away, the path continuing on the other bank to the more celebrated FiveRise Locks 800m further on. Return along the tow path to the Three-Rise Locks and turn right across a footbridge that spans the bypass and railway line, it leads back to the main road near the parish church What to look out for Having been removed from the main street, Bingley’s ancient stocks, butter cross and old market hall were re-sited near to the Ferrands Arms and the entrance to Myrtle Park.

Give your business a boost for 2014

Written by Simon Harrup MD Overt Marketing Ltd Whilst some economists are predicting an upturn in the UK economy for 2014, why not take matters into your own hands and get a marketing plan together that will put you in the driving seat. Don’t just sit back and hope that customers will find you, be proactive and create a plan to find them, engage with them and bring them back more often. Marketing is much more than Advertising and should always start with a simple plan. Look at your current customer base, identify your best customers and communicate with them more often. It’s generally accepted that it costs 6 times more to win a new customer than it does to sell more to your existing customers. After all, you already have a relationship with them, so make an effort to talk to them more. Set some goals for the year and write a simple plan with a schedule, this way you will have plenty of

time to plan and budget for the important elements of your master plan. As they say, failing to plan is planning to fail… If you start now and stick to a manageable step by step plan then you will see the benefits in just a few months and your new routine will pay big dividends. Simon Harrup of Overt Marketing Ltd says: “I’ve been helping people understand marketing and how to take simple steps to improve their business for many years now. I get the most satisfaction from helping small business owners get to grips with the simplest of strategies and often with very small budgets.” Finding a good marketing consultant is like a having a personal instructor to help you get fit… You can probably do it yourself if you have the time and motivation, but they can help you do it better and with much faster results. Week of Christmas festivities at local Bingley charity store celebrates a bumper first year By Christine Gilland Bingley-based ReStore celebrated its first birthday with a bang last month, with a series of special store events and offers during a week-long party in early December. Local business Ndulgence provided free cake at the store’s official birthday party, while Louise from mobile beauty therapists BNM worked tirelessly on the Saturday to provide free mini manicures for customers, ensuring the birthday celebrations were a tremendous success. ReStore, which sells vintage and as-new clothing and furniture to raise money for young women battling life-controlling issues first opened its doors on 8 December 2012. All the proceeds from store sales go to Oxenhope-based charity Mercy Ministries UK, which provides a free residential service to young women who are struggling with a range of debilitating issues, from selfharm and eating disorders to the effects of abuse. The charity also works throughout the UK to raise awareness and educate around the issues of mental and emotional health. ReStore has established itself within Bingley as a source of quality vintage, but store manager Fiona Gavaghan says that the store has become so much more than that: ‘We know our community and our community knows us,’ she says. ‘Yes, we meet a need for people who are looking for quality items, but we’ve also become a community hub, a space for those in need of a chat or a cup of tea, a place to seek help.’ The birthday celebrations were yet another opportunity for 16

|

Fiona and her team to connect with the local community, with unprecedented numbers of customers filling the store, and customers saying they were ‘blown away’ by the festive atmosphere. The store also offers the opportunity for residents of Mercy Ministries UK to gain valuable work experience through working in the store. One such volunteer, Hannah, says that working in the store has been an ‘amazing experience. You get to meet so many people and feel such a part of the community. When I first came to Mercy Ministries, I truly believed it was my last chance, as I was suicidal and had been self-harming for years, a victim of abuse and rape. I don’t know where I would be now

if it weren’t for Mercy Ministries.’ The next ReStore in-store events will take place on the 12-14 February, and will be around the theme of ‘Love your community’. Keep an eye out in the Bingley store for more details. ReStore exists to raise money for Mercy Ministries UK and to provide work experience opportunities for its residents. The store is located at 5 Rise Shopping Centre, Myrtle Walk, Bingley. Mercy Ministries UK works in partnership with local churches to deliver a six-month residential programme where women aged 18-28 can receive help for a range of life-controlling issues and the effects of abuse in all its forms. The programme is offered absolutely free of charge.

Stop smoking, just vape - the truth about e-cigarettes... Written by Simon Harrup (ex smoker of 40 a day) There has been a lot of hype about electronic cigarettes with lots of negative press stating that they are dangerous or contain harmful chemicals and rumours that they will be banned. Most of it is just that, rumours and hype… The truth is that e-cigarettes could save millions of lives over the next decade and they are here to stay, one way or another. The Tobacco Industry and large pharmaceutical companies stand to lose billions in sales, the total value of tobacco sales in the UK in 2012 was £13 billion… That is dropping drastically and has them worried. Other NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) is also being hit hard, but with a success rate at below 15% compared to over 50% of e-cig users, there’s no wonder. Government are not really trying to ban them, they are looking for ways to control and tax them as they know they are here to stay. This is a major technology shift for an age old problem and it will save lives, think of it like the industrial revolution - whilst there may be resistance, it can’t be stopped - it is the future! So, what is it? The device is just a battery with a heating element (coil), then you have a chamber of liquid that passes throughout the coil and is heated up until it evaporates… The vapor is inhaled which delivers nicotine into the body.

18

|

Why is is safer? Because the liquid is pharmaceutical grade nicotine with food safe flavouring two other ingredients: Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin. Both are food safe and actual in lots of everyday products we eat. There are none of the other carcinogenic (cancer causing) chemicals found in tobacco. Think about this… If it was harmful, the tobacco giants would have used their researches to identify the effects and irradiate the threat to them. They couldn’t find anything and over the last two years have

been buying e-cig companies in order to get in on the market. The restrictions the government want to put in place by 2016 will make it almost impossible for anybody but the Tobacco Giants and large Pharmaceutical companies to manufacture e-cig products. So believe what you will from negative press… But in the meantime, if you want to stop smoking… E-Cigarettes are the best option for many many smokers! A creative twist for old cards By Jane Richards The New Year is here again and it’s time to take down the tree, undeck the bows of holly and throw away that last morsel of turkey….. however, please don’t be hasty in your desire to throw out every part of Christmas. Why not save your Christmas cards to up-cycle for next year into Christmas tags etc. Even the back of a card can be used around the home for making shopping list or notes into the new year. You are also playing a very important part in saving our planet too. If you have remnants left of the candles burned over the festive period, then why not boil them all down and add a new wick found in your local hardware store or online and make a new candle to burn on Valentines for you and your loved one?

Next month ..... The Big Spring Clean Find us at www.divineshabbychic.co.uk

Small steps add up to a big change The new year is upon us again and for most of us unfortunately that’s also the time to reign in our desire for the wonderful food we have indulged ourselves in over the festive period. Well before you start setting yourself impossible New Years resolutions, why not just simply set yourself a few smaller goals? Winter stroll with a loved one or the family and take in some scenery. Drinking water is always an important part of cleaning the toxins out of your body and the daily intake of an 8oz glass of water is all you need a day. Start off with half that amount and increase it gradually if you prefer. Water really is the best de toxin for our bodies and has so many benefits for example it will improve the radiance and elasticity of your skin! Vitamin supplements are good to consider in your New Year regime but what is much simpler and actually cheaper would be to ensure you consume your “5 a day”. If you go down the vitamins route please talk to your local pharmacist who will advise you and ensure you have the right balance for your needs. Finally sleep is also important so set yourself a good bedtime routine to relax an hour before finally switching off the light. Living History

Bingley - Living History Collaborations It looks like being a busy year for our local historian Alan Cattell. In the December 2013 edition of The Hub as part of our regular Living History feature, Alan collaborated in writing an article with Michael Wild whose family emigrated from Bingley to America in 1907. Alan has already agreed to collaborate on a number of other articles/approaches during 2014 including those with: Bingley Baptist Church Who are celebrating their 250th Anniversary of being present in Bingley. As part of the Anniversary the Reverend John Gleghorn and Alan are seeking to research and create a snapshot of the local area (adjacent to Park Road and Clyde Street) and characters around the Baptist Church (on the Park Road site since 1874). They would be pleased to hear anything from readers in relation to that immediate area for the period. Bingley and District Local History Society John Croasdale, Chair of the Society has contacted Alan re an exhibition of Local History in Keighley which the Society will be contributing

a display to during 2014. The theme is The First World War 1914-1918 and whilst John has carried out research already, he is also interested in hearing from readers particularly about social history in the Bingley area during the period. Stuart Clark The Clark family can be traced back to having lived in Bingley continuously for nearly 500 years and within an area of approximately one mile during that time. Stuart a Hub reader of Lane End Farm, Gilstead has collaborated with Alan on sharing his geneology research and family history. This will form the basis of an article in a future issue. Future Articles Alan is currently writing articles on Wesley’s Visits to Bingley and Magnet (Founded on Whitley Street, Bingley by Tom Duxbury) and Prince of Wales Park. These will be published in future issues.

Health Matters Dr Simon Gazeley, a GP at Springfield Surgery in the Canalside Healthcare Centre in Bingley, will be sharing with The Hub readers exclusive advice on topical health issues and giving his tips for a healthy life.

Go on then, just one more... Many people like a drink over Christmas. Office parties, Christmas drinks parties, bucks fizz, mulled wine, Champagne at New Year ……. it’s everywhere and often hard to avoid. It is common to think that a few drinks at Christmas does us little harm, and that may well be the case. But once the tree is down and the baubles are packed away for another year, it’s easy to carry on drinking a little bit too much. Most people who have alcoholrelated health problems aren’t alcoholics. They’re simply people who have regularly drunk more than the recommended levels for some years. Binge drinking has it’s own risks, but it’s certainly not only people who get drunk or binge drink who are at risk. It is difficult for many of us to understand the risks of excessive drinking. Most people who regularly drink more than recommended levels don’t see any harmful effects at first. Alcohol’s hidden harms usually only emerge after several years. And by then, serious health problems can have developed including:

22

My Community HUB

• liver disease • obesity • reduced fertility • high blood pressure and heart problems • increased risk of cancers • anxiety and depression • poor physical fitness The NHS recommends that men shouldn’t drink more than 3-4 units on average per day, and 2-3 for women. You are a regular drinker if you drink on more days a week than days you don’t drink. And drinks often have more units than we think! A pint of 4% lager has 2.3 units, as has a medium glass of 13% wine, so the units can quickly add up. Identifying that you may have a problem with alcohol is the first step to getting better, but it is often the hardest one. A great way to see if your drinking is putting your health at risk is to keep a drinking diary or use an alcohol tracker on a smart phone. There are some excellent guides on how to use these at www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ alcohol/Pages/Alcoholhome. There are many ways to get yourself healthier for the New Year, including losing weight, stopping smoking, or getting more exercise. But reducing your alcohol intake is just as important, so if one of your New Year resolutions is to cut down, here’s some tips:

• Make a plan. Before you start drinking, set a limit on how much you’re going to drink. • Keep a diary, it will help you keep track on how you’re doing. • Know your units, know exactly how much you are drinking. • Tell your family and friends that you’re cutting down so they can encourage you. • Make it a smaller or a weaker one. Still enjoy a drink but choose smaller sizes or weaker strengths. • Stay hydrated and don’t use alcohol to quench your thirst. • Take a break and increase the number of days each week when you don’t drink.

If you would like to give feedback or comments to Simon regarding this feature, or would like to suggest ideas for future features, please contact him through The Hub by emailing kim@overtmarketing.co.uk

Top tips for January In January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, galeforce winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximize light. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds; food is scarce for them over winter. • Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days to prevent botrytis (mould) forming on your plants. • Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already for the frosts to breakdown. • Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out. Treat with sulphur powder if any signs are present.

• Repair and reshape lawn edges

• January is a great time of year to plan what seeds you are going to sow in the spring. • Keep harvesting winter crops like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, parsnips, kale, chard and spinach. • Even though it’s chilly, you can sow broad beans in pots and protect them in a cold frame or greenhouse.

• Shred your Christmas tree for mulch or take to your local recycling centre • Prune apple and pear trees. • Start forcing rhubarb. • Prepare a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect them from peach leaf curl. • Check that greenhouse heaters are functioning properly, by investing in a maximumminimum thermometer to enable accurate monitoring of greenhouse temperatures. • To reduce greenhouse heating costs place bubble wrap around the inside of your greenhouse and make sure its secure using clips.

• Try hanging a bird feeder near a window and do a survey of the different birds visiting your garden

Come and see us online Search Woodbank nurseries - harden on Facebook

• Remember to water your indoor plants. • Keep your bird feeders topped up to stop the birds from feeling hungry over the winter. • If you have a pond, prevent it from becoming frozen by placing a floating pond heater in the pond. • Put lagging around outdoor taps to prevent freezing and to enable use throughout the winter. • Wash out and disinfect your old pots with jeyes fluid. All items needed can be purchased from Woodbank Nurseries.

Pet advice

Keeping your pet warm this Winter By Peter Eccles Airedale Veterinary Group Pets, like humans can suffer in the winter. A natural type of coat, such as the coat on most cats and rabbits and in breeds like the German Shepherd, is really good at keeping your pet warm in the winter but extra help may be needed. A natural dog, rabbit or cat coat has two layers. It has a soft, inner layer which is a great insulator and it is very important at keeping your pet warm and then a longer, courser, outer coat which is a water proofing layer. Animals have muscles at the base of their hairs, these muscles can cause their coat to lie flat which helps keep the pet cooler or the muscles can make the hairs stand up, which makes the coat thicker and helps keep the pet warm. Dogs, cats and rabbits will respond in the winter by growing a thicker coat but they may still need help to keep them warm enough. Some pets especially some dogs will need special care to ensure they are not cold this winter. Old pets like old people will feel the cold more. Older pets will often respond by growing a thicker coat than younger animals. It still amazes me when I need to trim fur, how thick the coat can be with some of these older animals. Young animals such as puppies and kittens also need special care to make sure they do not get cold. Sick animals will also get cold easily. Smaller animals have a higher surface area to body weight ratio and so also feel the cold more. With some breeds it is common to trim the outer layer off, as this then leaves the softer inner layer, which is nice to stroke but does remove the outer, waterproof layer. Dogs which are trimmed like this should have a waterproof coat for when you take them out especially if it is raining or likely to rain. Either avoid trimming your pet at all in the winter or ask the groomer not to cut the coat too short. Some breeds such as Greyhounds, lurchers, whippets, etc. have very thin coats and can feel the cold and again they will need a coat when out in the winter unless they are running around. With energetic dogs like these you may need to put a coat on while walking them and then take if off when they have a chance to run. Brushing & combing the coat regularly can help. If the fur becomes matted it will be less warm. If you need to wash your pet, keep them warm until the coat is completely dry and before letting them outside. Washing the coat removes the natural waterproofing of the coat. There are a huge variety of coats for pets these 30

|

days. A visit to a pet shop or the internet will show you the amazing variety on sale. Some of these are not very practical, but some are. Like with human clothing; waterproof, breathable coats are very good. Animals which are kept outside in kennels and hutches need to be looked after very carefully at this time of year. Kennels and hutches need to be checked regularly, ensure they are waterproof, draft free and warm enough. Extra insulation inside is also needed. Hay is warmer (& softer) than straw as bedding, lots of hay bedding will help keep rabbits and outside dogs warm. When the weather changes suddenly for the worse, you may need to bring the hutch or kennel inside. If you do need to bring them in you have to be especially careful when putting them back outside again. Heating in hutch or kennel may be needed. Waterproof heating pads are useful. Ensure that the bedding is warm and well placed. Bedding is an important part of keeping a dog or cat warm through winter. If the bed is on the ground, lifting it can help or put some insulating material under the bed. Avoid putting the bed in a draft or cold part of the house or room. A custom-made bed with cushioned insert, high walls or even an igloo bed can help, blankets, and old clothing can help keep your pet warm. For old and arthritic pets, consider using a heated bed or a heated pad. Clean or change bedding regularly to reduce fleas, germs, and dirt. If the roads or paths are gritted, the salt & grit can irritate your pets’ feet. Check their feet if they have been out and rinse off the salt if present. If there is snow outside then when out for a walk or when coming in, make sure there is no snow impacted between the pads. Consider taking your pets for shorter walks if necessary in bad weather.

Don’t panic if your cat is lost Here at Yorkshire Cat Rescue, we often receive calls from members of the public who have lost their cat. Cats rarely go further than their own small territory – which can be as little as a couple of gardens or as extensive as several fields, depending on how many cats are live in the locality, whether the area is rural or urban and whether or not the cat – and neighbouring cats – are neutered. It is rare for a cat to go far, unless it is chased out of its comfort zone by another animal or a child, or unless it is moved - by getting into a vehicle or by being inadvertently moved by a person. An example of this might be someone who sees a “starving stray” and takes it home to feed it up – the cat may well be a starving stray, but it could also be a much-loved elderly cat suffering a medical condition which causes weight loss. For the owner of a lost cat, the trauma of not knowing what has happened to the cat can be immense – for some people their cat is the only living being who shares their life and the “not knowing” can be as intense as grief for a lost family member. Many cats return after a short period of time, having been locked in a local building or having managed to find their way home. But some cats do require help from their owners to enable them to find their way home. There are lots of things that owners can do – many are easy but some involve a degree of dedication on the part of the owner. Posters and leaflets are a great way to get your lost cat into the mind of locals who may have seen it. Be careful not to fly-post but you can put posters in shops and Post Offices and of course many vets and pet shops and other animal institutions may offer to display a poster for you. For that reason, it is a good idea to take several clear photos of your cat from all angles, particularly if it has distinguishing features which will easily identify it. You should also hang unwashed socks and bedsheets on your line – they will smell of your home and its occupants (don’t worry, the neighbours won’t know they’re unwashed!). This is particularly good if your cat is unused to going outside, as the scent will be clear to the cat and will help direct it home. The best time to look for a missing cat is dawn 32

|

or dusk, and you should walk quietly away from your house and then walk slowly back calling and maybe shaking a box of biscuits. If you call your cat on the way out, you risk inadvertently driving it further from home. One of the sentences we dread hearing is “she’s old, she’s probably gone off to die ...” Believe us, cats really don’t do this! They may be getting a bit deaf or senile and wander off for a nap and then forget where home is, but they won’t have an intention to go off to die. It really is an old wives’ tale. Last summer we rehomed the lovely Mischief, a geriatric black and white lad. He settled in well but after a few months we received a call from his owner to let us know he was missing. His new owner uttered the dreaded sentence and we had to persuade her that he was probably not dead, but lost. Luckily she took our advice and went off to look for him, finding him a couple of days later at the other end of the village, sitting in a garden and looking extremely bewildered. Back home he soon settled and several months later is still going strong. If you lose your cat, remember to report it to Yorkshire Cat Rescue and other similar organisations. Wellbeing

New Year, New Me By Nicola Procter Personal Wellness Coach

Here are a few tips to help undo the excesses of the festive season or to stop you carrying on in the same vein. Water is the key to fat loss; we should all be drinking at least 2 litres per day. A good trick is to drink at least one large glass of water before sitting down to a meal. It will give you a filled feeling right from the start, thus helping to prevent overeating. Often during the evening when we feel hungry we are actually dehydrated, have a glass of water- if your tummy is rumbling then you are hungry. Remember to eat a good quantity of raw vegetables or salad with your main meal. This is a great help with a proper digestion as you are getting plenty of fibre as well as dealing with acidity, something you may well have suffered from this Christmas. Let your first helping at the dinner table be a small one – you can always come back for seconds, if out at a restaurant order first then you don’t feel the need to compete, another great tip is to use a smaller plate for your meals- 9 inch is a good size. If out for a meal start with the food items that you like most – chances are that by the time you get to the rest, your appetite will have been satisfied. The deserts are usually the ‘killers’ – they are extremely rich in sugar, which slows your digestion and your body down, leaving you with that stuffed, nauseous 34

|

feeling. If possible, don’t eat the desert, or if you have to, try sharing with a loved one. If opting for a pudding give it 15 minutes between the main course and ordering to see if your body really wants one. Wine and alcohol is what does for most people at this time of year. No harm in having a glass before dinner- alternate with a glass of water, but don’t touch it in conjunction with your food. If you want to, continue with alcohol at least an hour after your meal and watch the munchies don’t strike before going to bed! Try to divide your intake of food evenly throughout the day. Eating five or six small, quality meals during the day is much better for your stomach than three large ones. Even if you are not into exercising, taking a walk after a heavy meal is a great way to help with digestion and to burn calories. The combination of oxygen intake and use of the muscles releases the air, built up in your intestines, helping to relieve the pressure and that uncomfortable bloated feeling.

Christmas boost for Allerton Cat Rescue Volunteers at Allerton Cat Rescue build a Catmus forest out of tins of cat food. This is the second year we have collected Morrison’s bonus vouchers from our supportive followers, not just in the Bradford area but we have followers in many cities who have sent their vouchers to help us feed our cats in care. In 2012 volunteers Julia and Helen Sharp built their first Catmus Tree from donated vouchers. This year the campaign started at the end of October 2013 and as you can see they built a Catmus Forrest. (There was actually 5 large trees couldn’t fit them all in the picture). Our supporters have been amazing, some didn’t shop at Morrison’s, but changed for the festive period so they could get the vouchers to send to us. Using the vouchers we bought £1870.00 of cat food for the rescue. This is amazing and means we can focus our fundraising efforts on paying the vets bill which currently stands at £4000. Brenda Satterley founder of Allerton Cat was absolutely overwhelmed by peoples support and kindness.

Brenda said you are all just PUUURRRFECT. Thank you so

much for your support it means the world.

Now Christmas is over and no doubt you are in the holiday blues, why not start to book your tables for our fantastic fundraising event on 31st Jan 2014 at the Mercure Hotel, Bingley. All monies raised are going to The Allerton Cat Rescue vets bill. For more information please call Steven Sagar-Watson on 07985 477744. 36

Happy New Year? Or is it? Erika Williman, Divorce Consultant at one of the largest law firms in Bradford, shares some of her insight into dealing with ‘festive fall-out’ and how to take things forward if you feel your relationship has come to an end and you want to make a fresh start in 2014. New Year’s a chance to reflect on time that’s passed as well as taking stock and looking to the future with a sense of resolve and purpose. Packing away the baubles and tinsel signifies the end of the festive period and, sadly, for some couples it will also signify the final chapter in their relationship. It probably won’t surprise you to hear that January and February are the peak months for Divorce proceedings to be put in place. We can’t blame it all on Christmas, but the two weeks spent in close proximity with the addition of a bit too much sherry, impending credit card bills and the time to reflect on the year that’s passed (whether it be good or bad) can prove a real wake-up call as to the future direction you’d like your life to take. New Year, New Start If you’re thinking that you need some advice about how best to approach separation or divorce, even if you’re not quite sure whether this is the path you’d like to go down, please just call me to arrange a free consultation to talk through the choices open to you and the ‘what if’s?’. Uppermost on many couples’ minds is the impact that a Divorce is going to have on their children and their future financial security, particularly if there are joint assets or joint debts to consider. As a couple, you work hard to build a life together and create a home. My job is to make sure you leave the relationship in the best possible way to give you emotional and financial stability – I sit down and plan together with my clients to minimise stress and conflict and keep legal costs down. This isn’t a case of ‘one size fits all’. The Divorce packages and support that we offer are tailored exactly to your needs and your family circumstances. Domestic Abuse Flashpoints As well as couples who’ve simply grown apart over a period of time, I also have lots of experience in scenarios where Domestic Abuse (emotional and/or physical) is a factor in the break-up of a relationship. Christmas really can be a flash point for incidents of Domestic Abuse and Violence – again alcohol or money worries can be triggers . If you are frightened for your personal safety you must call 999 without hesitation and keep your own log of any incidents. We can then help with emergency orders and other legal steps to keep you and your children safe. 40

Erika Williman, Head of Private Divorce Cutting The Cost of Divorce Understandably, as well as worrying about how they are going to manage financially after a Divorce, many people are also concerned about affording the Legal Fees. We offer Fixed Price Divorce Packages starting from just £250 + VAT*. We can arrange flexible payment plans and work to capped fees. At a time when lots of things in your life maybe uncertain, we are always clear on costs and ensuring you feel in control. I know that, for the vast majority of our readers, the opportunities brought by the new year will be embraced wholeheartedly. However, if you are at all uncertain about what the future might hold for your relationship and are considering moving on, then you might like to think about talking to me first to explore the options. To arrange a free and no-obligation meeting with Erika Williman at Petherbridge Bassra Solicitors please call 01274 724114 or email: mail@petherbridgebassra.com. The firm also holds a drop-in clinic every Tuesday from 5-6 pm at their offices on Piccadilly in Bradford (no appointment necessary) www.petherbridgebassra.com

Community

Rotary shoebox scheme a huge success thanks to generous pupils By Tony Caunt Known as “the friendly club” we have been in existence for 39 years and still going strong. Our motto is “service above self” and the main thrust of the club is to collect money that we can then distribute to various charities. Our community committee serves to help and service many local organisations and deserving causes. Our members were particularly active in collecting toys from Queensbury school for disadvantaged children to The Blenheim Project. The Bradford soup run benefitted when members collected “socs and chocs” for distribution to people who are not as fortunate than us. Members are also being trained to operate the “firefly scheme” when they will be visiting elderly members of society to fit smoke alarms and reflective tabs to enable firefighters to locate a person and safely rescue them in the event of a fire. The club also aids many good causes in their International committee and the most recent is “the Rotary shoebox scheme” where local school children are asked to fill a shoebox with toys or household items or items suitable for babies or young children or teenagers or older adults.

Wilsden Primary School pupils with their boxes The boxes are then collected from the schools and taken to a distribution warehouse for onward shipping to East European countries where, once again the folk are not nearly as fortunate as us and are delighted to receive a shoe box. The photographs are of children from Harden Primary and Wilsden Primary schools with some of their filled shoe boxes at the point of collection.

Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of thrillers, works on another writer’s play. Suspense mounts as the plot twists and turns.. Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of thrillers, is struggling to overcome a “dry” spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds.A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college – a thriller which Sidney recognises immediately as a potential hit. Sidney’s plan, which he devises with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the younger man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with an abundance of thrillers (and laughter), holding the audience enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play. The Right Thing. A gripping drama as a Lancashire family battles with change and uncertainty as the men return from war. Nelson, in 1945, is the backdrop for a new play by award-winning writer, John Turley. “The Right Thing” follows the fortunes of a Lancashire family battling with a time of change and uncertainty as the men return from war.We see the main character changed by war, struggling to fit back in and accept the new order of things. Add to that the consequences of an all too familiar episode that occurred whilst he was fighting for King and Country. Tempers fray, patience disappears and all becomes volatile. What will happen? This is a play that achieves that rare thing – it grips you from the start, keeps you there, and you want to see how it concludes. Will it be happy? Will it be sad? A play that will entertain all and strike some familiar chords. Bingley Arts Centre, Main Street, Bingley BD16 2LZ. Tel: 01274 519814. www.bingleyartscentre.co.uk www. bingleylittletheatre.co.uk
