Red and white Moslavina (MOSLAVINA – REPUBLIC OF CROATIA)

Moslavina is historically and geographically an area in the central part of the Republic of Croatia, situated in the expase between the rivers: the Sava and the Drava. It spreads on the Lonja and the Čazma valley expanse. It is surrounded by the rivers: the Ilova on the east and nort-east, the Česma on the north and north-west and the Lonja and the Trebež on the south. The important centers of power are Kutina, Popovača, Garešnica, Čazma and Ivanić. This is an extremely rich Croatian area due to the favourable climate conditions, abundance of water, fertile soil and quality timber/wood. These are the reasons for the area of Moslavina to be inhabited from the antiquity period onwards. The Croats appear to the most numerous inhabitants in the area. From the beginning of 18th century many historical and economical migrations had brought the Serbs, Czechs, Magyars, Germans, Slovaks and Italians as well as the Jews to the area. Owing to the fact the ethnic, cultural and language image of the Moslavina is known by its oil and chemical industries, wood industry, as well as by the wine growing and wine making. Among all the Croatian folk costumes the one of Moslavina stands out by its variety, beauty and elegance. The book of folk costume entitled «Red and white Moslavina» includes some twohundred colour photographs showing various, characteristical variants of women, men and children ‘s fine clothing worn mainly in the first half of 20th century. The formal attire has been preserved in our Moslavina villages while a large number of specimens is kept in the Moslavina Museum in the town of Kutina. Today the costume is worn in rare occasions, e.g. on some formal celebrations, folklore shows, and mainly the members of village folklore groups are wearing the clothing in those occasions. The photographs included in this text have been made in cooperation between the Moslavina Museum, folklore groups and individual members from Voloder, Potok, Osekovo, Jelenska, Ilova, Husain, Rogoža and Mali Pašijan.
