A creative boom is set to explode across the Highland capital of Inverness next month when the annual goNORTH Creative Industries Festival rolls into town. The two-day long conference and showcase event, which will be held at venues across the city centre on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 June, promises to be bigger and brighter than ever.

#gonorth2014

The yearly festival covers all the creative industries, from fashion and craft to music, screen, broadcast and publishing. A key theme this year will be the future of digital and how it affects those working across all creative sectors. The festival’s opening keynote speech will be given by Neil Cartwright, former head of New Media at Sony Music UK and now managing director of digital marketing agency, Million Media, whose clients have included; Jamiroquai, Channel 4 and The Prodigy. Cartwright was recently named in the Courvoisier Future 500 as one of 500 people who will help shape the future of the UK. New music, as always, lies at the heart of the festival, and this year, as well as showcasing the work of home-grown musical talent, organisers have worked with international partners to bring a selection of top international talent to Inverness.

This year, for the first time in its 14-yearhistory, videogames will feature on the goNORTH programme, highlighting the importance of the industry to the economy of the Highlands and Islands. In collaboration with the Scottish Games Network, top game studio, Elgin-based Hunted Cow, will be creating a gaming playground in the foyer of an Inverness hotel, while leading figures in the videogame industry will gather for a Gaming Masterclass, later that day. A major fashion event on the opening night of the festival also promises to put the work of Highlands and Islands-based designers firmly on the map. As part of a short film showcase, top Scots crime writer, Denise Mina, will be showing Multum in Parvo, a short documentary film about her extended family made on an iPhone. The Scottish premier of a unique online collaborative feature, 50 KIsses, will also take place at goNORTH. It's another bumper benefit gig in aid of The Soundhouse Edinburgh : 16 May : www.soundhouse.org.uk The countdown has started to the second benefit gig for The Soundhouse, who are at the beginning of what will be a massive fundraising campaign in aid of a new state-of-the-art music venue and musicians' facility in the centre of Edinburgh. And this time they're quizzing the bands as part of their preparations: you can check out the first interviewee at their website. It's Malcolm Crosbie of Shooglenifty, who reveals secret skills and the unusual ambitions he harboured as a child. The second benefit gig has an absolutely solid gold line up: rockability legends, Lord Rochester; close-harmony doyennes The Bevvy Sisters; hypno-folkadelic-ambient-trad pioneers Shooglenifty; and Scotland's top DJ, Dolphin Boy. The gig is on Friday 16 May at Edinburgh's The Pleasance Theatre at 7.30pm. All ages are welcome up until 11pm, over 18s only after 11pm. Tickets are £10 each, which is fabulous value for such a solid line up and the best atmosphere in town! You can buy tickets now online here: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/644354 And we really recommend that you do buy those tickets in advance (print at home and postal options are available) because last month's gig sold out. the mns collection ‌.

Eala our 'MNS roving reviewer' toasts some of this year's gigs Willie Campbell : Cairn String Quartet : Lau : Annabelle Chvostek : Mull Historical Society

Willie Campbell www.facebook.com/opendayrotation Willie Campbell has produced his first Gaelic album Dalma. There are several translations for the word but Campbell's favourite, and most apt, is brazen. It has been produced by Gaelic music legend Calum Malcolm and they both speak about the album before Willie takes to the stage. It was being launched at Ceol 's Craic and is the first album on their own label. First song Fir Chlis would doubtless have had many dancing a bit if it had not been a seated venue. This continues with songs like Grunnd na Mara which has a definite dance beat. Dalma has a spiritual edge to it which is acknowledged in the gig with M'anam Trom and Faisg Air mo Dia. For this he is joined by Duncan MacKinnon: ' It kinda goes downhill from there to be honest' says Campbell as MacKinnon leaves the stage and that is typical of the self deprecating humour that runs through the show. There is also an Americana vibe running through the show which adds something a bit different. The rocky side really comes out with Am

Balach coir which Campbell says 'we made sound like supergrass or something'. To finish there are a few English songs including Kerry can you hear me? and Chasing Dreams which he finishes with. Despite some sound problems this was a really good gig which promises an even better album.

Cairn String Quartet www.cairnstringquartet.com Cairn String Quartet had invited along to the SXSW festival, and as anyone who has been invited will know being asked is only the start, then comes the fundraising for flights, visas etc and that's what this gig was all about. They had brought along a bit of a who's who of the Scottish music industry with singer-songwriters, hip-hop and everything in between represented. In between the Quartet themselves treat us to a bit of a musical tour de force which also seems to span every possible genre from pop hits like Lorde's Royals to Chvrches The Mother We Share and the folky Big Archie by Duncan Chisholm. The quartet have a way of reimagining these tunes and making them theirs that us great to hear. Keeping everything running smoothly is compere Olaf Furniss - of Born To Be Wide and Wide Days fame. There are some interesting and unique collaborations too with R.M Hubbard joining both Emma Pollok and Aidan Moffat to start off the evening in Platform. A break is then taken to allow the audience to get a drink and buy some raffle tickets. It also allows the only full band of the evening, Call to Mind, to set

themselves up. David from Kid Canaveral and Stephen from Errors are also on hand to add some rock to the quartet's sound. Towards the end we are treated to what we are promised is a world exclusive, a performance by Louie (Hector Bizerk) Solareye (Stanley Odd) and Gasp of a new track entitled Phantom of the Awkward. 'I never thought I'd be playing with a lovely string quartet in Easterhouse' quips Louie! Finally we have James from the Twilight Sad joining the Cairn String Quartet on stage. It was definitely a great gig to see and rarely do you get to see such immense and diverse talent in the same place and it speaks volumes for the Cairn String Quartet that so many musicians wanted to get involved and play with them.

Lau and Annabelle Chvostek www.lau-music.co.uk Annabelle Chvostek is first up at the City Halls. The Canadian generally plays pretty up beat, country tinged songs and at points you could be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled across a hoedown. She can however be quite diverse taking us from a hoedown in Ona to a smokey jazz bar on her next song. There are also some political songs before which we are told of civil unrest in Qubec when the government tried to bring in laws banning groups of more than five from meeting. These are delivered angrily and with lots of minor chords. Chvostek is keen on audience participation and the audience are happy to oblige.

View all the MNS digital publications from links at www.musicnewsscotland.wordpress.com

After a short break it's on to Lau who have a reputation for an exciting live show and pushing the boundaries. Tonight is no exception. Martin Green is often trying to control three instruments at once as Aidan O'Rourke's fiddle soars above it as Kris Drever's guitar keeps the rhythm. The main point of tonight is to premiere a new tune

that Lau have been creating along with Elysian Quartet who join them tonight. It's part of the PRS music Biennial in which composer get the chance to collaborate and create new music. Lau's effort is called The Bell That Never Rang which is 15 minutes of breathtaking music that is incredibly diverse and it is hard to believe it is being made by so few people. Drever's usual dry wit is occasionally on show but it is mostly Green taking the lead between tunes tonight. Songs Ghosts and Midnight Feast, originally recorded for an EP with Karine Polwart, allows Drever to show off his vocal talents towards the end of the show. After a last tune the Lau boys leave the stage but not for long as they are convinced to come back for one more tune.

The Deadly Winters set sail with '16 Days' Based on the true story of The Deadly Winters' bassist Mike Edie's own grandfather, 'Sixteen Days' tells the staggering tale of how a young man, Stewart Ross MBE, saved his crew mates after their ship, The Inversuir, was torpedoed, and then kept them alive for 16 days in a lifeboat before being rescued. This is one story we would like you to remember.

Here's the link to watch the inspiring 'Sixteen Days' video : http://youtu.be/4JqAC8so1co Download the song and the album, Away Boys, Away @ www.thedeadlywinters.com/shop The Deadly Winters re-define the term ‘folk-rock’, and take you on musical travels through tales of love, pain, sorrow, joy and friendship. The five-piece know their audience and know their stories well, bringing to the stage an emotive musicality that goes beyond an ordinary performance. You get a real story with these guys, a story that blossoms and erupts beneath and around intricate and well-constructed melodies. Radio airplay for the band has been plentiful, including BBC Radio One’s Introducing in Scotland, Roddy Hart and Iain Anderson’s shows on BBC Radio Scotland, Jim Gellatly’s Weekly Podcast, Amazing Radio plus numerous internet stations and Podcasts from the UK to Australia.

With the emphasis on ‘easy-listening’, Edinburgh’s premier concert orchestra presents an evening of some of the best and most popular music from the cinema, the musical stage and the wonderful melodious world of light music, in Edinburgh's Queen's Hall on Saturday 24 May. Join The Edinburgh Light Orchestra for their summer 'Journey Into Melody' with music from Fiddler on the Roof; Annie Get Your Gun; Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; music by John Williams and Robert Farnon’s theme from Shalako. the doyen of modern film composers – John Williams – featuring music from such epic movies as ‘Star Wars’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Superman’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘E.T.’ And there is more music from the cinema with a selection from the 1937 pioneering Disney feature-length cartoon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with includes such unforgettable ‘gems’ as ‘Some Day My Prince Will Come’, ‘With A Smile And A Song’, ‘Whistle While You Work’ and ‘Heigh-Ho’. Blue Rose Code :

album : 'The Ballad Of Peckham Rye'

release date - 2 June : Pre-order now - http://bluerosecode.bandcamp.com/

!! Scottish album launch on Saturday 17 May at Glasgow CCA details @ http://glowarts.co.uk/home/concerts/blue-rose-code-17th-may-2014-cca/

Blue Rose Code is not folk music, or so he's been told. The Edinburgh-born songwriter Ross Wilson's new album The Ballads Of Peckham Rye - features an all star cast from the folk world - Karine Polwart, Aidan O'Rourke and legend Danny Thompson. ‘Imagine John Martyn meeting Van Morrison, shipwrecked with a crate of Motown records’ Time Out . 'The Ballads Of Peckham Rye' is co-produced with Alex Pilkington (Sophie Barker, Beth Hirsch) and it's a record with an upward trajectory. Ross' voice rings with new found strength, and there are moments of unbridled euphoria - in the feather light touch of first single 'One Day At A Time' (released on 19 May) featuring the beautiful voice of Mercury nominee Kathryn Williams, on 'Oh, North', an ode to Scotland with arms outstretched and sung in a style Ross playfully refers to as "Scots gospel", or 'The Right To Be Happy', 3 minutes of lapsteel-laced, high kicking Americana. There's a determination to play with form: from 'True Ways of Knowing' on which Ross recites gh poet Norman MacCaig over a kinetic instrumental track, to 'Where The Westlin' Winds Do Carry Me', a stirring jazz arrangement showcasing the incredible musicians Ross was able to work collaborate with thanks to Arts Council funding. As Ross has noted, "the new album features an eyewatering ensemble of world class musicians – Danny Thompson (Pentangle, John Martyn, Kate Bush, Nick Drake, Tim Buckley), Karine Polwart (winner of 4 Radio 2 Folk Awards), Aidan O' Rourke (LAU, Multiple Radio 2 Folk Award winner including Musician of the Year 2014), Rachel Newton (Furrow Collective, The Elizabethan Session, R2 Folk Award Winner) & Dave Milligan (Dave Milligan Trio, The Unusual Suspects)".

John Mitchell & Sofie Jonsson :

ep : 'Graith and Grain'

release date - 24 May : www.johnandsofie.com !! Scottish EP launch on Saturday 24 May at 'Young's Interesting Books' in Glasgow's Shawlands www.facebook.com/pages/Youngs-Interesting-Books/108158585887550

'Graith and Grain' is four tracks by this Scottish/Swedish acoustic folk roots duo. 'Leaving Carolina', penned by Mitchell, incorporates fiddle, pedal steel, bass, and drums. The three remaining tracks demonstrate the duo exploring open tuned acoustic guitar, tapping, frailing, thumb picking, deft fiddle playing, vocals, and harmonies. John & Sofie are touring in Scotland in May and June 2014 in support of the new EP, for their full tour schedule visit www.johnandsofie. com About the tracks: 'The Carolinas', and notably, Charleston, SC, became a prominent landing point for Scottish families as a result of the Highland clearances. The story of Leaving Carolina is written from the point of view of a modern day relative of those earlier immigrants having to return to the Highlands and homelands. John served with the Queen’s Own Seaforth and Cameron Highlanders and wrote this song whilst on leave in the USA recuperating after a near fatal car accident in the Belizean jungle. The folk sea shanty 'Haul Away' is written and played in Appalachian string band style. The acoustic guitar is tuned in Orkney tuning and played banjo clawhammer style with the fiddle doubling the melody. John used to be a south deep chiel himself, pitching the waves aboard a trawler as a young fisherman. 'Through the Pines' is a folk jazz instrumental written after crosscountry skiing through the pine forest in the mystic half-light in our home in the hills of Sälen, Sweden. John has been a life-long fan of Rory Gallagher. This is our ragtime take on Rory’s 'Barley and Grape Rag'.

UNKLE BOB

Before I Die

It's Not Enough

Embers

James is an acoustic singer/ songwriter based in London. James brings a lot to his music - honest story telling from Folk, Pain and Passion from Blues, hooks from pop and all with an indie edge. James' live performance is engaging, honest and mesmerising. His personality is charismatic and contagious.

'It’s Not Enough' conjures up the atmosphere of a sundrenched road-trip on America’s Pacific Coast Highway, with its slight air of melancholy, and gentle dappled sunlight that’s all the more precious because it feels so transitory.

“I didn’t expect my former band-mates to accept an invitation to reunite in a studio. But they said yes.” says Rick. Old chemistry returned to breathe new life into bedroom demos.

Homeward

Based on the true story of our bassist Mike Edie's own grandfather, Sixteen Days tells the staggering tale of how a young man, Stewart Ross MBE, saved his crew mates after their ship, The Inversuir, was torpedoed, and then kept them alive for 16 days in a lifeboat before being rescued. This is one story we would like you to remember.

Saraseto Records are proud to announce the release of Poor Things, self-titled, debut album. Recorded by Matt Scott (PAWS) and mastered by Mercury music nominated producer Dave Paterson. Poor Things is the debut album from the Glasgow based three-piece. In June 2013 Poor Things released ‘Hurricane Poor Things’ EP, receiving several positive reviews from BBC Radio 1, Artrocker and Podcart. Festival appearances soon followed including T in the Park, Brew at the Bog, and goNorth.

The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle. The four piece have been active since 2012 but their roots stem from very early childhood friendships. Robert, Oscar and Walter have been friends since pre primary school days, retaining a close friendship despite all studying at different schools. During the autumn months of 2013 the band were busy recording two tracks at the prestigious Castle Sound Studios and The Depot Studios funded with the YMI initiative. “Young Soul” will be their first official Single under the name “Beeches”.
