Musicians' Union Celebrates 120th Anniversary - Dundee and Glasgow had some of the earliest branches

A Musicians' Union picket line in 1893 calls for a boycott of Manchester Hippodrome and Ardwick Empire

The Musicians’ Union (MU) is set to celebrate its 120th anniversary in Manchester, where the union was formed. This week's MU conference will last two days and features speeches from the TUC General Secretary Frances O Grady, UK Music CEO Jo Dipple and Shadow Arts Minister Dan Jarvis MP amongst others. Tuesday also sees a birthday bash for the union with a number of guests from across the sector.

It was back in April 1893 that Joe Williams, a young clarinettist, sent an anonymous letter to his fellow musicians in Manchester inviting them to a meeting to discuss forming a union to, ‘Protect us from amateurs, protect us from unscrupulous employers and protect us from ourselves.’ From that small meeting grew the Amalgamated Musicians’ Union (later to become the Musicians’ Union).

Within six months the AMU had 1,000 members with branches in Liverpool, Newcastle, Dundee and Glasgow and it was not long before the Amalgamated Musicians’ Union was taking on employers and demanding an improved standard of employment for its members. The MU now has over 30,000 members. John Smith, MU General Secretary, said: “The challenges that have faced musicians since Joe Williams’ inaugural meeting in Manchester have been many. The arrival of ‘talkies’ at the turn of the century, two World Wars, the use of gramophone recordings on radio, developing technology and online piracy all threatened the livelihoods of musicians. Through every twist and turn, the MU has stood strong, fighting the fight for those who make a living from music. Long may that continue.” In the present day the Musicians' Union as well as negotiating on behalf of its members with all the major employers in the industry, offers a range of services tailored for the self-employed by providing assistance for professional and student musicians of all ages. You can contact the MU in Scotland at: 1 Woodside Terrace, Glasgow G3 7UY T: 0141 341 2960 E: glasgow@theMU.org

Aberdeen DJ & producer bid for funding to launch exciting independent record label One of Aberdeen’s hottest up and coming DJs, Patty Paterson AKA Krazzy Martin, announces his intention to set up a forward thinking, creative record label NEEDA Records with the support of venture catalyst agents Bloom VC and the financial goodwill of both strangers and friends. At the age of 25 Patty has set up a bid with Bloom in order to turn his dream of running a record label into a reality.

NEEDA Records will offer a unique platform for UK producers to showcase their sound, while genuinely raising their profile and building their audience. Intending to work alongside undiscovered and established producers, Patty’s vision is to create an environment and support system in which artists, can develop within a highly creative setting while utilising shared experience, knowledge and connections. Design and marketing are at the helm of the brand’s delivery, ensuring a slick, contemporary and forward thinking image. Patty’s dedication to the industry and his youthful, dynamic approach to business, have already paid off with relationships established for the production, pressing, distribution and promotion of NEEDA Records. Teaming up with venture catalyst agency Bloom, Patty hopes to raise £1,000 worth of donations from the public to fund the start up of his business. Unlike common financing agents, Bloom does not see donations as investments made as a business investment. Bloom VC, who work out of an office in Glasgow, set up their business with the hope of capitalising on a growing trend in which the public support new starts by making a promise to donate. If the business proposal, which is advertised online and shared via social media platforms, reaches it’s target of donations then the money is released to the business and backers receive perks from business such as vinyl’s and digital downloads as means of gratitude. It’s a story of local support and the key role that the public now play in helping people fulfil their business dreams where the banks would no longer be able. Speaking of sharing his dream in such a public manner, Patty Paterson founder of NEEDA Records said, “Since falling in love with house music, I have known that my career happiness would ultimately lie in the hands of music. Over the past 7 years I have managed to work with businesses that are doing a fantastic job of supporting the music scene, however with the current economy it’s really rare to find any jobs within the music industry now. Setting up a record label is something that I am determined to do; I want to make a difference and inspire people to follow their dreams. It’s tough out there, but hopefully with the support of the public, my family and friends and of course the invaluable help of Bloom VC, I’ll have the funding to set up NEEDA Records.” Needa Records represents the dream and ambition of Patty Patterson in setting up and running a forward thinking record label. In teaming up with Bloom Venture Catalyst to secure committed public funding, the partnership showcases an unusual yet ingenious way for the public to support young business start-ups in the tough economical climate. With a target of £1,000 worth of promised donations to be made by Sunday 25th August, at 08:30, promises can be made online at http://bloomvc.com/makepromise/Launching-an-independent-record-label.

About Patty Paterson: In 2005, Patty Patterson made a decision that would change his life forever. A devoted skateboarder, this boy from Westhill, Aberdeen began working for the infamous underground nightclub Snafu as a PR. Promoting the sounds of Detroit techno, underground house, indie and new wave electronica, Patty’s future path was already being mapped out in front of him. Spending many nights engaging his ears and feet in a culture far from the norm of Aberdeen, Patty found a community of likeminded hedonists, who cared less for the mainstream and more for experiencing the cultural ways and sounds creative havens like London and Barcelona. Three years later, Patty’s interest in the skills and technical ability of DJs and producers was all consuming, and he set upon launching his own monthly party and learning the wealth of skills required to be a top DJ. Since beginning on his path in music, Patty is now a successful DJ in his own right, performing under the pseudonym “Krazzy Martin” and delighting crowds of house music lovers across Scottish music venues and festivals alike; including stand out performances at RockNess and The Big Beach Ball. Having completed a degree in sound production, Patty now embarks on fulfilling his passion and love for music with exceptional enthusiasm and the goal of setting up and running a unique UK based music label.

Edinburgh 2013 Fringe Concert from the Scottish flagship folk group, Battlefield Band Edinburgh : 11 August : Tickets @ www.thequeenshall.net

A rare couple of home ground concerts between international tours, from one of the great institutions of the Scottish traditional music scene, the Battlefield Band. The group always love to play back in Scotland and fiddler Alasdair White, who hails from the Isle of Lewis, says "Edinburgh is a base of sorts for the group - it's where at least half of the band have lived for a long time - and it's always a joy to be involved in playing during the buzz of the festival so it's a guarantee that the Queen's Hall show will be great fun. We were also really pleased to be able to play the HebCelt in 2013: it's my home turf so it's particularly important to me. It's actually the first time I've played in my home town with Battlefield Band since I joined them at the age of 18, so it's brilliant to finally come home and perform. I've been going to the HebCelt since I was a kid and it was so important for me to see bands of a really high calibre up there playing , right on my doorstep. I always hesitate to use the word 'inspiring' too lightly but in actual fact this was. It's a real honour and a pleasure to come back now and perhaps even do the same thing for other young musicians." Originally founded in 1969 and named after the ‘Battlefield’ area of Glasgow, the band have been an everevolving bedrock of talent for over four decades, and continue to lead the way with their inspired fusion of ancient and modern traditional music and song. Their latest album ‘Room Enough For All’ - overseen by long-time producer and Boys of The Lough founder member Robin Morton - captures one of Scotland’s flagship bands at the top of their game and illustrates yet again that they are among the most relevant contemporary composers in their genre today. Their ever-fiery instrumental dynamic, with bagpipes and fiddles to the fore, exhibits the intuitive interplay and understanding between world class traditional musicians, while their songs of social history, plaintive ballads and songs from the Scots Gaelic tradition are as powerful, relevant and moving as ever.

Edinburgh's Red Dog Music expands into London Full story @ http://blog.reddogmusic.co.uk/2013/07/12/red-dog-music-london-pro-audio/ Despite the economic crisis and downturn in high street retail, independent music store Red Dog Music, who opened their first shop in Edinburgh's Grassmarket in 2008, is to expand with the opening of a pro-audio consultancy in South London. Based in Clapham, Red Dog Music will offer a first-class, welcoming and relaxed facility to demo and compare the latest and best proaudio and musical equipment. Following the administration of White Rabbit Records, Red Dog Music will take over former DV247 premises and is also proud to be able to take on several of its key former staff members, with their extensive knowledge of hi-end audio technology and instruments: The philosophy of the new facility is to offer a bridge between existing ‘bricks and mortar’ and online retail. Alex Marten, managing director of Red Dog Music, described the model: “The musical instrument industry is very different to other industries as our products are tactile, visceral things that cannot be adequately demonstrated on a website. “As well as being part of the community, providing a range of events and offering the same prices as online retailers, everything we carry must be ready to demo. You should be able to try out anything. If you can’t, you may as well be at home, shopping online.” "We are excited to expand in the current economic climate, particularly

given the difficulties faced by other physical outlets, and reflected in the state of high streets across the country." Red Dog Music looks forward to providing friendly service and advice in a new market and to continued growth and success. Red Dog Music is Edinburgh's largest general music store, with over 5,000 square feet of electric guitars, keyboards, studio recording equipment, computer music, lighting, PA equipment, percussion and more. Our expert staff have extensive knowledge of the industry, from the first rehearsal to the finished master of your debut album.

THULA BORAH :

album - ‘Qualia’

release date - 22 July : http://thulaborah.com

The latest instalment in the Thula Borah story has arrived - the brand new album Qualia which is available from 22 July via Itunes, Amazon, Bandcamp and their website. Praised in the past for their haunting and diverse sounds, the band now presents a six track album that drips quality from every pore. The mix includes brooding, haunting soundscapes, some more direct compositions and a couple of longer songs. Those lengthier tracks allow the band to explore deeper themes and ideas through the natural progression of the music. Lloyd sums up how the band feel, “We’re proud of the results of all the hard work we have put into creating this album. It continues to showcase our post-rock and alternative roots but also marries together some of our poppiest, direct output alongside some of our heaviest, dense and progressive work yet.” The band intends to support this exciting release with a flurry of live dates in their native Scotland. Hailing from Glasgow the band will go beyond their home city and visit Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen and Dundee. So just who is this album for? Back to Lloyd, “Hopefully there's something for everyone on there. The album closer “Zero Progression” is probably our favourite song to date.” Prepare to sit back and enjoy the ride as the album broods, expands, challenges and delivers. Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire :

album - ‘self titled’

release date - 2 September : www.roddyhart.com Produced by Danton Supple (Coldplay, Morrissey) and mastered by Pete Maher (U2, The Killers), Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire is the eponymous debut album from one of Scotland’s most industrious and respected bands, released on Monday 2 September 2013 on Middle of Nowhere Recordings - Single, Cold City Avalanche, released Monday 26 August Cold City Avalanche is the first single to be released; with its hook laden melody amongst soaring guitars, the band soak up both classic and contemporary influences such as Springsteen and The National, whilst also forging their own distinct identity. Hart takes a leap of songwriting faith on the album – visiting themes of death, desolation, religion and lossunderpinned by the hopeful romanticism, characteristic of his earlier work, Roddy connects with his band The Lonesome Fire to create a vividly widescreen sonic landscape, given life by the producer of Coldplay’s multi-million selling album X&Y. Roddy has spent the last few years building a formidable six-piece band to produce an album of epic proportions: dark, brooding and atmospheric, but shot through with moments of beauty and hope. Recorded in locations as diverse as a Glasgow church, the band’s own rehearsal room in Govan Town Hall (once home to Franz Ferdinand), and the legendary Dean Street Studios in London (the birthplace of albums by David Bowie and The Smiths), the result is an album rich in character and ambitious in scope; the sound is that of a band, and a songwriter, coming of age. As well as having his own show on BBC Scotland, Roddy was recently responsible for curating Forever Young: A 70th Birthday Tribute To Bob Dylan for Celtic Connections 2011, a hugely successful gala concert featuring artists such as Rosanne Cash, Thea Gilmore, and Josh Rouse, which was broadcast by BBC Radio 2 and Sky Arts. Even more recently, as part of Celtic Connections 2013 he curated The Roaming Roots Revue – a night in the spirit of Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles and featuring Beth Orton, The Low Anthem, LAU and many more, Roddy and his band were then acclaimed as the ‘festival highlight’ by The Independent. Hart has performed for the Queen at the Scottish Parliament, toured all over the world, and played with artists such as Wilco, Kris Kristofferson, Ray LaMontagne, John Prine, Ray Davies, Jeff Beck, and others. https://twitter.com/roddyhart : www.facebook.com/RoddyHartandtheLonesomeFire : http://www.monr.co.uk/

LLOYD JAMES FAY The Black River Chronicles Album : cd / download Release Date: 10 June

Having already caught the critics’ ear (Radio 1, Channel 4) as frontman of acclaimed Scottish alternative rock quartet Thula Borah, Lloyd James Fay embarks on his first foray into solo territory with the highly anticipated release of his beguiling debut LP, The Black River Chronicles. An introspective reflection of his formative years, childhood stories and forlorn first loves in suburban Lanarkshire’s creaking post-steel-industry suburbs, the album sees the Glaswegian suburbanite rocker turn pastoral singer-songwriter and embrace the subtler ambient and acoustic textures that pepper his band’s catalogue. Due to the success of the festival some of the venues are starting early with music on Friday evening which will give you a taste of what will be taking place over the weekend.

The Mela will be back once again this year with our best show yet. We’re looking forward to announcing an even more diverse, dazzling line up than last year’s, in June 2013. 2012 was our biggest festival to date, with increased audience and performer numbers, a special free pyrotechnic show, and a whole extra stage - we’re currently working hard on plans to make 2013 even better.
