Museo Civico Archeologico

Corridoio, Plastico Del Fiume Aso

The convent complex of Saint Francis, a 12th century venue of excellence, restored and used as a modern cultural center in 2007, which is also right in the midst of the historical center of town, hosts the Numismatic Collection, the Municipal Library, the “Giano Environmental Education Center, the Officinal Herbs Garden and the Archaeological Civic Museum. The Museum collection consists of materials recovered in the municipal area as well as private donations and findings of the local Archeoclub, witnessing the long occupation of the territory from the most remote times to the Middle Ages. The exhibition of artifacts is divided into four Halls according to a chrono-typological criteria: furthermore the floor of the corridor is made up of a viable model of the valley of the Aso River, from the mouth to the source, which, thanks to the help of box lighting, highlights the archaeological findings that occurred in the area. In the first and second Hall, several lithic artifacts are on show, including flint stone arrowheads belonging to the prehistoric period, and ceramic artifacts, such as pottery and objects for weaving and metal ones, such as weapons, swords, and ornaments, relevant to the funeral rituals of the Piceno necropolis of contrada Crocefisso (dated to the 6th century BC). The third Hall, dedicated to the Roman period, exhibits materials coming from the territory, including decorations and architectural elements, such as stamped roofing tiles and mosaic fragments and finds from burial contexts, such as lanterns, urns, and unguentariums, which testify to the inhabitation of the Monterubbiano area in ancient times. The Numismatic Collection of Dr. Stefano Mircoli is situated in the fourth Hall, which includes 500 coins from various periods, from the Roman republic period to the Middle Ages, besides a considerable number of papal coins from the 16th to the 19th century.
