Cleanthony Early had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead visiting Wichita State past Missouri State, 62-52. The Bears dropped their fourth straight league game despite a career-high 21 points from Wichita native Gavin Thurman and 14 from Anthony Downing. The victory for the 20th-ranked Shockers was anything but a cake walk. MSU scored the final 7 points of the first half to trail 25-21 at the break and then opened the second stanza with a 12-0 run. Thurman sparked both surges for the home club as he scored Missouri State’s last 9 points of the opening period and then added 7 in the first four minutes after halftime. Thurman’s second trey of the night gave Missouri State a 33-25 advantage with 16:17 remaining before Early got the Shockers on the board with a 3-pointer of his own. Downing then retaliated with a 20-foot jumper to put the home club ahead 35-28 with just over 15 minutes left in the contest. The tides turned quickly from there. WSU would reel off 16 unanswered points over the span of five-and-a-half minutes to take a 44-35 lead just past the midway point of the half. Freshman Dorrian Williams ended the six-minute dry spell for the maroonclad Bears to make it a 44-38 game, and the Shockers’ lead teetered between six and eight points until the 4:27 mark. That’s when a layup by Carl Hall, who finished with 15 points off the bench, pushed Wichita’s advantage back to double figures, 55-45, and a transition layup by Demetric Williams at the fourminute mark ran WSU’s lead to 12. Downing scored the Bears’ last seven points in a two-minute span to keep the fight going, but the Shockers made 5-of-6 free throws in the clutch to seal the victory. WSU made just 37.0 percent (20-for-54) of its shots, the club’s second-lowest percentage of the season, and was 5-for-21 (.238) from long range. Gregg Marshall’s club tallied 14 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over just nine times to overcome its third-lowest scoring total. MSU’s freshmen accounted for 33 total points, including 2 by Drew Wilson who had a team-high 7 rebounds. Thurman finished 8-for-17 from the field and led the club in scoring for the third straight night.

A banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted home standing Bradley past Missouri State, 69-66. The Bears overcame a 16-point deficit to tie the game with 4.3 seconds remaining on a drive to the bucket by Anthony Downing. MSU then applied pressure to the Braves on the in-bound play and pushed Walt Lemon, Jr., out deep on the right wing where he heaved a desperation shot toward the basket, which caromed off the glass and in for the win. Lemon had a game-high 20 points for the Braves, while MSU was led by Gavin Thurman, Downing and Marcus Marshall with 13 apiece. The Bears matched a season high with 15 turnovers, but out-rebounded the larger Bradley club 33-25 and used a 58.3 percent shooting clip in the second half to mount the comeback effort. The Bears also produced their highest-scoring half of the season to date with 46 points in the second stanza, while MSU’s six freshman combined for 43 points on the afternoon. After trailing by 15 at the break, MSU stormed out of the gates in the second half, reeling off the first six points of the period and capping an 11-2 run in the first three minutes to pull within 37-31. Bradley pushed back ahead by double figures briefly as Lemon snagged a steal and took it coast-to-coast at the 15:41 mark to make it 41-31, but the Bears kept their focus. Keith Pickens started a Bears’ 6-2 run with an offensive rebound and layup, followed by a 15-footer by Christian Kirk as the shot clock expired, and a steal and layup by Downing that made it a five-point game with just under 14:00 left. After Bradley center Will Egolf picked up his fourth foul at the 11:46 mark, the Bears reeled off five unanswered points at the line to climb within 50-47 at the midway point. The home club then manufactured an 11-2 run from there to go up by 10 with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining. Bradley kept a double-figure lead with 3:57 to go when a free throw by Kirk made it 63-53. But MSU got a pair of 3-pointers from Thurman, a traditional 3-point play by Marcus Marshall and a tip-in by Dorrian Williams to make it a 66-64 contest with 1:03 left. In the final minute, the Bears forced BU’s Jake Eastman into a missed bonus ball from the left corner and called a timeout with 14.9 seconds on the clock. Downing found a seam from the top of the key and drove to the basket to tie the game with 3.7 seconds showing. The officials reset the clock to 4.3 after the replay review, giving Bradley time to get the ball to Lemon for the win.
