GAME 16

Illinois State put an end to Missouri State’s eight-game Valley winning streak, out-rebounding the first-place Bears by 11 and prevailing 68-60 at JQH Arena.   John Wilkins led three Redbirds in double figures with 15 points, while Tyler Brown and Bryant Allen added 14 apiece. ISU was 10-for-28 (.357) from threepoint range and held snagged 14 offensive boards.   MSU, which had a chance to move into first place by itself after Evansville’s one-point home loss to Wichita State, dropped into a six-way log jam atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings with their first defeat of the year.   Kyle Weems scored a game-high 18 points for the Bears who lost a home league game for the first time since Jan. 30, 2011. Jarmar Gulley added 16 points and 9 rebounds for the home club.   Illinois State, which never trailed, used a steady stream of three-pointers to win its first conference road game of the campaign. After MSU cut a 30-25 halftime deficit to three points on a pair of free throws by Gulley just 11 seconds into the second half, the Redbirds got three-pointers from Brown and Wilkins over the next 78 seconds to push their lead to nine.   Later in the half, the Bears trimmed the deficit to 45-40 after Weems reeled off 12 straight points, and Gulley made one of two free throws at the 8:58 mark. But on ISU’s next possession, the Redbirds snagged three offensive rebounds off missed three-point attempts before Jon Ekey knocked down a dagger of a trey from the right wing to make it 48-40. Less than a minute later, Wilkins dropped in a three from the left corner to make it an 11-point game again.   Still, MSU was able to climb back within 52-47 after a Michael Bizoukas free throw with just 2:42 to go. But, it was simply Illinois State’s night as the Redbirds made 12-of-14 free throws from there to counter three Missouri State three-pointers in the final 40 seconds and close out the win.   The Bears shot a better percentage from the field than the Redbirds, making good on 21-of-57 (.368) attempts, compared to 20-of-57 (.351) by the visitors. But MSU was just 5-of-18 (.278) from three-point range, while Illinois State made 10-of-28 (.357) with five bombs in each half.   Ekey and Jackie Carmichael accounted for 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively, for ISU, including four offensive caroms by Ekey.   The Bears also collected 9 points from reserve Christian Kirk in the post who played 24 minutes in the absence of Caleb Patterson who was recovering from a concussion. Keith Pickens added 8 off the bench, while Bizoukas contributed 8 assists with one turnover.

Missouri State shot 54 percent and committed just one turnover in the second half to post a solid 69-63, come-from-behind win at Indiana State.   Anthony Downing scored 17, and Kyle Weems notched 14 to lead four Bears in double figures.   It was MSU’s first win in Terre Haute since March 1, 2008, and the improvement to 3-1 in the MVC was not easy for the Bears who trailed 33-26 at the half.   Indiana State lost at the Hulman Center for the first time this season, but led 43-34 with 13:39 to go. The Bears began to make their move shortly thereafter as Weems, Downing and Jarmar Gulley scored baskets on a 6-0 Bears’ run over the next 45 seconds.   Gulley, who finished with 13, gave MSU its first lead of the second half on a layup in transition at the 10:38 mark. A reverse layup by Michael Bizoukas with 8:36 to go gave MSU a three-point lead, before a transition three-pointer by Jordan Printy pulled the Sycamores even, 47-47, with just over eight minutes left.   Bizoukas scored another layup immediately out of the under-eight media timeout to give the Bears a two-point lead again. Over the next five minutes, three-pointers by Downing and Bizoukas pushed the Bears’ edge to 59-50.   On the next ISU possession, Carl Richard threw down a solid, driving dunk for Indiana State to end a three-minute scoring drought. He was fouled on the play to keep the score at 59-52, and MSU was solid down the stretch to hold off a late surge from there. Downing and Gulley combined to go 8-for-10 at the line in the final 43 seconds to seal the win and help the Bears improve to 5-2 on the road this season.   Bizoukas matched a career high with 12 points, and finished with 6 assists and no turnovers. The Bears were 24-for-47 (.511) from the field and 5-of-9 (.556) from bonus distance. MSU finished 16-for-25 (.640) at the line and matched the Sycamores 33-33 on the boards. Perhaps most impressive for MSU was just one second-half turnover, despite 10 in the first stanza.   ISU got 17 points from Dwayne Lathan and 16 from Richard. The Sycamores were 21-for-56 (.375) from the field, 8-of-26 (.308) from three-point range, and 13-for-24 (.542) at the line.   In the first half, a full-court shot at the buzzer by Anthony Downing gave new life to MSU headed into the intermission down 33-26. The desperation shot from beyond Indiana State’s free throw line came just moments after Jake Odum put the Sycamores up by 10 on a drive through the lane.
