Montclair State University Magazine
2014 spring University Magazine.
FROM THE PRESIDENT MONTCLAIR The magazine of Montclair State University P eople often ask me what makes Montclair State such an extraordinary place. I think that the answer to the question is that from its origins and throughout its history there has been in the culture of this institution a drive to excel and make a difference. Over the years, this passion for excellence has been exemplified by the men and women participating in our highly regarded intercollegiate athletics programs. This past year our sports teams competed in more than a halfdozen national Division III championship tournaments, following recent years when our women’s field hockey, women’s softball and men’s soccer teams all made it to the Final Four. Our teams are among the very best in the nation, and they hope to soon add another national championship (or two) to the trophy case in Panzer Gym. To celebrate their achievements, in the classroom as well as on the field and on the court, Montclair magazine has expanded its athletics coverage and brought in Star-Ledger sports columnist Steve Politi to tell the stories of our scholar/athletes. One notable success story is pictured on the cover of the current issue --Mike Fratello. A 1969 graduate of Montclair State, Mike has embarked upon a remarkable journey that has taken him around the globe to teach others the strategies and values of basketball that made him a household name in the worlds of broadcasting and coaching. He is a reminder to our students that the world is waiting to see and benefit from their energies and talents. Following the path forged by our alumni, students today are finding success both before and after graduation. In this issue, you will read about a graduate student who is financing her research through crowdfunding and about a program that is helping dozens of students who have aged out of foster care to find success in college and beyond. You will also read about an environmental researcher’s success at urban rooftop farming and its potential for improving global sustainability and about a staff member’s 10-year fight to make marriage legal for gay couples in New Jersey. To all of you who have contributed to the Fund for Montclair State this past year and who support this vibrant academic community, I want to extend my deep gratitude on behalf of the University. Your gifts have made a critically important difference for our students and enabled them to access educational opportunities that would be unavailable without your support. Thank you. Susan A.
