James City County Parks and Recreation welcomes the New Year and all the possibilities it brings for you and your family to live healthier and happier! In our programs and at our parks and facilities, we’re making improvements and extending our offerings.

We especially want to thank all patrons of the James City/Williamsburg Community Center for your patience and continued patronage during the renovations at that facility. The improvements, many a direct response to your feedback, are complete and impressive - pool area upgrades including tiling, renovation of the men’s and women’s locker rooms, and re-carpeting, tiling and painting throughout the building. We’re excited about our new look, thankful the work is done, and hope you’ll find it all well worth the time.

If you haven’t had a chance to stop by the Center, please visit soon. To welcome you back and to meet new citizens, we’ve scheduled an Open House, complete with tours, class demonstrations, and more.

Mark your calendar for this event, to be combined with our annual Destination Recreation Expo, on Saturday, February 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center.

The Destination Recreation Expo is one of our most popular events, offering a look at all of the programs, parks and facilities available through Parks and Recreation. This is also a first preview and early sign-up period for our summer programs and camps.

The Expo is a one-day, one-stop chance to learn about all the summer activities offered through Parks and Recreation and our programming partners.

Come meet Park and Recreation staff members along with representatives from all of the local athletic leagues – we have lots of information to share about our recreation activities and services. Our camps fill quickly, so please take advantage of this very special occasion!

Also, be sure to mark February 5 on your calendar, the first day for citizens to register for our ever popular “Rec Connect” program.

Coming this Winter My Place!

Playgrounds are a place where children can come together to play, yell, swing, imagine. They are places where life lessons are learned – challenge, risk, cooperation and conflict resolution. Yet for too many families, playgrounds have become inaccessible due to physical limitations. My Place is inclusive, specially designed to welcome all individuals and families regardless of ability. “My Place” includes all the features of a traditional playground – swings, a merry-go-round, climbing equipment and some features very unique to the Historic Triangle area.

At My Place, all children play together – without bounds or judgments. Come visit My Place, located adjacent to the James City/Williamsburg Community Center, 5301 Longhill Road. Saturday, February 20, 9am-1pm FREE James City/Williamsburg Community Center The James City /Williamsburg community is invited to attend the Destination Recreation Expo and spend a few hours learning about all the recreational programs and services available to you and your family. The Expo will be filled with fun demonstrations and activities along with exhibits offering valuable information to help participants make good decisions on nutrition and fitness, sports participation choices, and yes, summer camps!

Informational booths, interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and raffles are just a few great features of this community event. We’ll have games and activities to keep your children entertained while you gather information about summer camp opportunities, sports classes and leagues, outdoor programs, aquatic programs, special events, County parks and facilities, Rec Connect, and inclusion programs.

Dogs are great therapy... come learn more during the 2010 Expo!

All local athletic leagues will be represented with information on how to join their program and there will be other recreation providers present to share their information. Discover all that JCC Parks and Recreation and our community partners have to offer!

Yes…we’re still accepting applications for the current year’s Before and After School Programs! Below is important information on upcoming summer and school year programs.

The REC Connect School Age Program has been providing quality summer camps and before and after school programs to our community for more than 20 years! This program is offered year-round in Williamsburg-James City County elementary and middle schools.

Registration forms and program information are available for download at www.jccEgov.com/ recreation or call the Rec Connect Info Line at 259-3170 for additional information. One registration packet may be used for both the summer camp and the Before and After School Programs.

Rec Connect Summer Camp 2010 Ages 5-14 (must have completed kindergarten)

June 21 - August 27, Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm at five elementary schools (locations to be determined) and two middle schools. In observance of holidays, programs may not operate on specific days.

Summer Camp Priority Registration Deadline: May 7: Applications are accepted after the deadline on a space available basis. Please allow two weeks for processing.

Summer Camp Weekly Fees:* Part-time: three days or less – $80/week ($75 for JC/W residents) + field trip fees Full-time: four or five days – $95/week ($90 for JC/W residents) + field trip fees $10 discount for second child attending full time. *Fees are subject to change.

Dependable and safe fun, games galore, fun fitness activities, creative crafts, interactive reading, team projects, drama, music, environmental education, swimming and field trips are just a few great features of this program! In addition, our programs include state licensure, partnerships with the WilliamsburgJames City County S.H.I.P (School Health Initiative Project), the JCC Police Department’s GREAT and RadKids Programs, the Williamsburg Regional Library, 4-H/Extension and many others who help us keep our programming new, fun and exciting for your children.

Ages 5-14 (must be enrolled in grades k-8) September 7 to the end of the school year at all elementary schools (Clara Byrd Baker, D.J. Montague, James River, Matoaka, Matthew Whaley, Norge, Rawls Byrd and Stonehouse). The middle schools (Berkeley and Toano) offer an After School program only. James Blair students are transported to Berkeley each school day.

Outdoor Adventures Outdoor Fun! JCC Parks and Recreation strives to offer programs that encourage youth and families to get outside and play, as part of the nationwide “No Child Left Inside” initiative. The benefits of outdoor play are numerous, including promoting an active lifestyle and discovering healthy interests, improving environmental awareness, decreasing restlessness, expanding physical abilities, and fully developing children’s senses. Therefore, we implement elements of outdoor recreation into all of our programming, including aquatics, sports and athletics, health and wellness, camps and classes, special events, and Before and After School Programs.

Paddling Day Trip (all ages and abilities)

Trip includes a short instructional program followed by a leisurely canoe/kayak ride around Little Creek Reservoir Park. Canoes, kayaks, paddles and life jackets provided. Children 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Instructor: Suzi Blanchard.

Archery (ages 9-13) There is nothing more exciting than taking your aim and hitting the bulls-eye! In this course designed for beginning to intermediate ability, participants will learn the safe use and handling of recurve bows and arrows. The certified instructor will train participants in the proper methods of range safety commands, stance, aiming, firing, and care of the archery equipment. In each lesson, participants will review safety procedures and have the opportunity to practice target shooting. Participants must dress in appropriate outdoor clothing and wear tennis shoes. 4-week session.

The Great Park Pursuit! (all ages)

County parks offer users opportunities for fitness, fun and adventure through fishing, boating, skateboarding, camping, hiking and biking trails, swimming and athletic pursuits. We invite you to discover our parks by participating in the Great Park Pursuit! In this self-guided program, you’ll be challenged to visit at least nine of our 15 parks over the course of a year which concludes in August 2010. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, activity log and water bottle for you to use while enjoying our parks. Registered participants will be eligible to enter quarterly drawings including the grand 3 prize drawing in 12 September 2010.

Comprised of 15 very motivated and driven young leaders, the YAC represents all area middle and high school students and serves as a liaison between youth and local government. This is an excellent chance to not only speak your mind, but make changes and enhancements in your community.

Past projects by the YAC include improvements to the transportation schedules to better fit youth’s needs, volunteering and leading activities at special County events, and administering a survey to assess community needs. Specialized Therapeutic Recreation Programs In collaboration with our community partners, we offer individuals with disabilities goal-oriented programs that promote a healthy lifestyle as well as provide exposure to cultural experiences within the community.

Buddy Baseball (girls and boys with special needs between the ages of 5 and 20) Buddy Baseball is provided in partnership with the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League. Players are assisted by one-on-one volunteer Buddies, who make it possible to adapt play to individual player needs.

Accessible Equipment The JCWCC’s fitness area is equipped with special adaptive equipment for those who use wheelchairs, lack mobility or require physical therapy. This equipment was purchased with a grant from the Peninsula Disability Services Board. For swimmers who use wheelchairs, aquatic chairs are available at the JCWCC in the aquatic area. Kidsburg (located at Mid County Park) has an adaptive swing for children with disabilities. Come out and enjoy the swing and all of the other activities the park has to offer!

Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program

This class provides an ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness, and improving the range of movement of joints affected by arthritis through the soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water.

Water supports joints, lessens stress, allows free movement and provides mild resistance to help build muscle strength. Participants perform range-ofmotion, strengthening and aerobic exercise.

Classes will be 50 minutes and are led by instructors who have completed an Arthritis Foundation approved training program. No swimming ability required.

Tame the clay on a potter’s wheel and learn how to form pots on your own. Instruction is appropriate to any level, from those who’ve never touched clay to those who want to improve their skills. Stress Release – Meditate and Create!

(ages 18+) How often do you come to the end of a day and find that you’re feeling tense and stressed? In this class, through guided imagery meditation combined with carefully chosen music, participants will learn how to relax and allow the guided imagery to take them on imaginative meditative journeys. Once the meditations are complete, participants will have the opportunity to express themselves by creating mandalas, putting color and shape inside a circle drawn on paper.

Whether used to recreate a sacred space from within ourselves or to help discover the unconscious self, mandalas are simply representations of something we all have within us – a focused, spiritual place that is our core self or our grounding point. About Our Dance Instructors Rebecca Suerdieck has been teaching dance professionally since graduating from the Arthur Murray Dancing Academy in 1995.

Her specialty is Swing Dancing, where she enjoys incorporating Charleston and Lindy Hop techniques into her style.

She has taught all ages, and her goal is for people to have fun and gain confidence to dance in public.

Mariellynn Maurer has been studying dance for more than 30 years. Classically trained in tap, jazz and ballet, she was introduced to bellydance in 1998 and quickly embraced it. She has been studying and training primarily in bellydance since 2005 and shares the elements of this dance form with excitement, clarity and smiles!

Susan Talebi took her first ballet lesson at age five. By high school, she danced six days a week and participated in an intensive dance program at Jane Bittner’s Dance Studio in Olney, Maryland. During this time, she was classically trained in ballet technique and Pointe work, modern, jazz and character. She has danced with the Olney Children’s Ballet Theater, the East West Ballet Company and the Lake Erie Ballet Theater. Susan danced on scholarship at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania and took ballet classes and private ballroom dancing lessons. Currently she teaches classical ballet at the Institute for Dance and assists with the Williamsburg Ballet Theatre.

Bellydance – Circles, Slides and Shimmies (ages 13+)

Even if you’ve never taken a bellydance class before, join us for the fun! This session will focus on circles, twists, slides and “shimmies” that everyone expects to see when they think of bellydance! Preschool and Youth Sports Preschool and youth classes are designed to introduce children to sports through fun and play. The goal of the preschool classes is to introduce children to the sport, and the goal of the youth program is to teach fundamental skills of the sport. Children should come dressed for play and MUST be the age listed for class by the class starting date. A parent/guardian is required to remain on site while the class is being conducted.

Sandlot Tots (ages 3-4 years)

These introductory golf classes teach the basics of driving, putting, stance, chipping and rules. A limited number of clubs provided by the Sticks for Kids program will be available or you can bring your own.

Youth League JCC Coed Youth Soccer (grades K-12) This developmental league is designed to introduce children to soccer. It runs in the fall from September through November and in the spring from March through May. Sign-up for the spring season will begin in December and for the Fall in June. The R.A.D. system is a program of realistic, selfdefense tactics and techniques. Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program

This class provides an ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness, and improving the range of movement of joints affected by arthritis through the soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water.

Water supports joints, lessens stress, allows free movement and provides mild resistance to help build muscle strength. Participants perform range-ofmotion, strengthening and aerobic exercise.

Classes will be 50 minutes and are led by instructors who have completed an Arthritis Foundation approved training program. No swimming ability required.

Pool Rules

• Children ages 6-11 must pass the swim proficiency test to swim alone. Children 11 and under who have not passed the swim proficiency test must be accompanied in the water by an adult, 16 or older, within arms reach at all times.

• Adults only are allowed to use the whirlpool.

Children age 12 and older may use if accompanied by guardian.

• No street clothes or shoes permitted on pool deck.

• Parents are encouraged to view lessons from the bleachers.

Frequently Asked Questions 1) If I’m new to the area or this will be the first time my child and/or I will take swimming lessons, how will I know what swim lesson level to register for? There are FREE swim evaluations for children and adults before the start of every swim lesson registration period.

During these evaluations, trained aquatic instructors can assess the participant’s swimming skill and provide feedback on the best swim level.

2) What happens if a swim class gets cancelled?

Generally, a make-up class will be added, extending the session as many days as needed.

Make up sessions will be conducted on the same day of the week and time as the normally scheduled class. However, there will be times when there aren’t enough days to make up swim lessons. In these instances a $5 refund will be provided each participant for each class cancelled.

3) Why are swim classes at an indoor pool cancelled for thunder and lightning? Although the indoor pool is grounded, it still runs the chance of being struck by lightning. This cancellation policy was created as a safety precaution for all aquatic participants.

4) How will I know if my child should be registered for Level 1 or Level 2 swim lessons?

The easiest way to determine the appropriate level is to gauge your child’s comfort in the water.

If your child is comfortable in the water and will submerge their face, they should be registered for Level 2. If your child is timid in or near the water and is not comfortable submerging their face, nose or eyes in water, register them for Level 1.

5) How many participants are there in a group swimming class? In Swim Levels 1-5, there’s a maximum of 7 participants. Level 6 Rec Racers Fitness Swimmer has a maximum of 25 participants. In Parent and Child Aquatics Level A and Child Aquatics Level B, there’s a maximum of 15 participants.

6) How long are swim classes? Parent and Child Aquatics classes are 30 minutes. All other swim classes are 45 minutes.

7) Do I have to stay on the pool deck while my child is taking lessons? If your child is enrolled in any swim lesson under Level 4, you must stay on the pool deck during lessons. Children in lessons under Level 4 have not yet developed the skills and endurance needed to pass the facility’s swim test, and therefore cannot swim without a parent present.

8) Can I drop my child off for swim class and then pick them up when it is finished? No, you must be in the facility while your child is participating in swim classes. If your child is in a swim lesson under Level 4, you must be on the pool deck.

9) Can we come in early or stay after class and swim? Yes, if your child has passed the swim test and has a current membership. However, keep in mind space is limited during classes.

10) Can someone other than a parent bring my child to class? Yes, but they must follow the same rules and stay on the pool deck with the child at all times.

11) If my child misses a class session, can they attend another class/another time? Because each class is based on size and ability, we cannot make individual accommodations.

12) How old must a child be to start swimming lessons? Participants must be at least six months old to register for Parent and Child Aquatics.

13) What is the temperature of the water?

The temperature of the water is 84 degrees.

14) How quickly should my child advance through the various levels? Keep in mind that every child learns and advances at his/her own pace. Try not to compare your child to other members of the class; they will progress as they are ready.

15) What should I do if the class I need is full or if there are not enough participants enrolled?

If a class is full, please sign up for the waiting list of ONLY the class in which you’re interested.

The Aquatic Program Coordinator will contact you if there are openings available. Register early as classes fill up fast! Classes that have not met minimum enrollment will be cancelled the Friday before they are scheduled to start.

16) What if my child is registered for the wrong level? Be sure to read the class descriptions carefully. If a child is signed up for the incorrect class level, there is no guarantee that the child will be transferred to the correct class level once class begins. Children will only be transferred to the correct class level if there is space available in the class. If there is no space in the correct class level, a refund will be issued to the household.

17) What level should I register for if my child has taken a session off? It’s recommended that they repeat the most recent class they have passed or be evaluated on a free swim evaluation day.

18) Why should I add my child on a wait list? If your child is placed on a “wait list” when a class is full, then we will try to accommodate those waiting to enroll as soon as possible.

Child Private Lessons

(ages 5-18) – for swimmers who need a one-on-one environment for learning Classes will consist of 30 minutes of individual instruction based on the child’s specific needs.

Lessons are taught based on instructor availability.

American Red Cross Learn to Swim Levels This swim program is progressive and taught by an American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor.

On average, participants repeat each level two to three times before becoming proficient in the required skills.

This is very important for successful completion of each level. The ages on all swimming levels after Child Aquatics are 5 and older. If a child is four years old and has successfully completed Child Aquatics, they may be registered for American Red Cross Levels 1 or 2.

Parent and Child Aquatics

(ages 6 months - 3 years) It is never too early to start your child with swim lessons. Parent and Child Aquatics is an introduction to the water for young children and a water safety course for parents. Parents must be in the water with the child as it helps to develop swimming readiness by teaching children how to have fun in the water.

The goal is to provide experiences and activities for parents and children to learn how to feel comfortable in the water and learn about choosing and using life jackets. Non-toilet trained children must wear a swim diaper. Class size is limited to a max. 15 children.

Aquatics

Preschool Aquatics (ages 3-5) Preschool Aquatics is designed for all swimmers ages 3-5. The skill focus will be a wide range of skills from beginner to more advanced swimming skills in preparation for American Red Cross Levels 1 and 2.

Students will learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner, feel comfortable in the water, submerge in a rhythmic pattern, explore buoyancy in a front and back position, perform combined strokes on front and back, change body positions in water, and learn about choosing and using life jackets. LEVEL 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Students entering this course must have a Level 1 certificate or be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 1. The objective of Level 2 is to give students success with fundamental skills.

Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Students will also explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on their front and back to lay the foundation for future strokes.

LEVEL 4 – Stroke Improvement

Students must have a Level 3 certificate or be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements in Level 3. Level 4 should develop confidence in the strokes learned up to this level. Students should improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl and back crawl) for greater distances. Students also build on the butterfly and will be introduced to the elementary backstroke, breaststroke and elements of the sidestroke. The basics of turning at a wall are also introduced.

LEVEL 6 – Rec Racers Fitness Swimmer

(ages 5-15) Students must have a Level 5 certificate or be able to successfully swim one lap of crawl stroke and one lap of backstroke (1 lap = 50 yards). Level 6’s objective is to refine strokes so students swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. This class is for swimmers who are interested in entering swimming competition or who want to achieve a higher level of fitness. This class will be structured much like a swim team. The first session consists of 20 practices and the second session consists of 14 practices. This will help participants work continually on their endurance and stroke skills.

Aquatics

Adult Aquatic Programs American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course (ages 15+)

American Red Cross training makes learning fun and easy. Learn surveillance and rescue skills, First Aid and CPR. Participants must pass a pre-class swim test: 300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke, and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund.

Classes will be held at JCWCC and Eastern State Hospital. Class meets at JCWCC on the first day.

Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program  We are now offering Arthritis Water Exercise.

This class provides an ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness, and improving the range of movement of joints affected by arthritis through the soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water.

Water exercise is a gentle way to exercise joints and muscles. Water supports joints, lessens stress, allows free movement and provides mild resistance to help build muscle strength. Classes will be 50 minutes and led by instructors who have completed an Arthritis Foundation approved training program.

Participants perform range-of-motion, strengthening and aerobic exercise. No swimming ability is required.

Aqua Easy 

Take a step toward a healthier lifestyle. This low intensity class focuses on increasing flexibility, muscle tone and range of motion. It’s a great prenatal workout, or for those with limitations or recovering from surgery and looking to continue their fitness.

This class consists of a low impact cardio workout for the whole body. Classes will be structured so that participants are comfortable moving at their own pace with guidance from their instructor. No swimming ability required.

Water Cardio 

This class is a high intensity cardiovascular workout to increase endurance, flexibility and muscle tone.

Through the use of various equipment and techniques, you’ll be put through an intense cardio workout without the strain on your joints from a land aerobics class. No swimming ability required.

Fitness Orientation and Services Basic Orientation A fitness attendant will demonstrate how to set up and determine pad and seat settings for the Nautilus or Cybex equipment. In addition, they’ll discuss general physical fitness principles and fitness room etiquette. Each patron will be given a fitness diary to record their personal settings and track their workouts. Orientations are available several times per day and are designed to accommodate up to four patrons at a time. Patrons can sign-up at the fitness desk for Nautilus, Cybex or both lines of equipment. Allow at least one hour to complete an orientation. Orientations are optional.

Program Design Orientation A fitness trainer will determine initial weight settings for patrons for either line of equipment. Patrons will be required to complete a Basic Orientation before signing up. These orientations are scheduled upon request and are designed for one patron at a time.

Daily Access Card

With the purchase of a Daily Access Card, JCC and Williamsburg residents may have free access by showing their card on Thursdays,1-3pm; Fridays, 6-8pm; and Saturdays, 2-5pm.

Proof of Residency Proof of residency is required to purchase or renew a resident access pass. A resident is defined as anyone who physically resides in James City County or the City of Williamsburg. This must be a primary residence as reported on income tax forms and used for voter registration. Proper documentation is required to prove residency. Documentation can be a DMV issued driver’s license with current street address, Virginia I.D. card with current street address, or with one of the following that shows street address: a utility bill, lease agreement or voter registration.

Meeting Rooms – 2007 Legacy Hall features two adjoining meeting rooms, one large and one small, which can be used together or separately. Both rooms can accommodate audiovisual presentations.

Twenty round tables (60 inches in diameter) and 175 cloth-seated chairs and 100 stackable chairs are provided and can be arranged in a number of different configurations to fit the occasion.

Kitchen – Kitchen amenities include a refrigerator, microwave, ice maker, double oven (stovetop/burners not present), sink and counter space. The kitchen (at additional cost) is available to the large meeting room if both rooms are in use simultaneously by different groups. However, if the large room user does not reserve the kitchen, it may be available to the small room user.

Wander along this 3.5-mile nature trail that loops through a landscape of beaver ponds, wetlands and forests. The trail includes interpretative signs about the environment, historical events of the early colonists and American Indians and area wildlife.

The trail is on wetlands adjacent to Mainland Farm, the oldest continuously cultivated farm in America.

The trailhead also provides convenient parking and paved trail access to the Virginia Capital Trail.

Over 200 species of birds have been documented on this site and it’s part of the Virginia Birding Trail.

This 3,000-seat stadium is designed for a variety of sports and community activities. The surface is rubber infilled synthetic turf with permanent lines for football, soccer and field hockey. There are two locker rooms and two restroom/concession facilities located at each end of the stadium.

Little Creek Reservoir Park (LCRP)

LCR is a fisherman’s paradise! This scenic park overlooks a 996-acre reservoir offering year round fishing, boating and picnicking. The park also has a concession facility, playground, soft mulch nature trail and two shelters with grills plus rental canoes, kayaks and Jon boats and a launch-your-own boat ramp. Electric trolling motors are the only motors permitted on the reservoir.

Children can play at Kidsburg, a community-built playground that has become an area attraction.

Adults can enjoy lighted recreation areas including softball and baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, as well as sand volleyball courts. This bowl-style skate park is 10,000 square feet of concrete jumps and ramps. It also features two ramps, a rail, a hand rail and multiple grinding edges.

Helmets and protective gear are highly recommended.

The site also features a half-mile, 10-foot wide paved multiuse trail.

This one-acre facility is part of the Chesapeake Gateways Network and provides access to the James River at Jamestown Island, including scenic views of Historic Jamestowne. Powhatan Creek is listed on the Natural Resources Inventory as the most biodiverse creek on the Peninsula. Scenic views of tidal marshes and an abundance of wildlife highlight trips on this beautiful waterway. Upper County Park (UCP)

180 Leisure Road in Toano 566-1451, Park open daily 8am to sunset. Pool is open 11am-8pm, Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day (Memorial Day Weekend – mid-June, weekends only).

This 91-acre park is located in the upper end of JCC. Amenities include a 25m swimming pool and a toddler pool, playgrounds, sand volleyball and basketball courts, multi-use trails and a 3.5-mile mountain bike trail, horseshoe pits and picnic shelters. There is a nominal charge to swim or rent the shelter. During its operating season, the pool may be rented after hours.

Waller Mill Dog Park

Virginia Capital Trail (VCT)

Trail starts in the parking lots of Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Greensprings Trail and connects to Jamestown Settlement

JCC is a partner of the VCT, a regional 55-mile multiuse trail connecting all of Virginia’s capitals – Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond. The first 7.5 miles of trail, all in JCC, are completed. The trail is a cooperative effort of the Virginia Department of Transportation, Game and Inland Fisheries and Conservation and Recreation, as well as the VCT Foundation and Williamsburg Land Conservancy.

This complex is host to most local sporting events for County league playand tournaments. The baseball complex includes three lighted youth baseball fields, one lighted majors baseball field, four tee-ball fields, a concession building with rest rooms and a playground. The soccer/multiuse fields complex includes six synthetic turf multiuse fields, four premier full size and four intermediate grass soccer fields and a concession building with restrooms. The Park also includes three outdoor basketball courts, a one-mile paved multiuse trail, a 3.5-mile hiking trail, two ponds for shoreline fishing, the stadium and the indoor athletic facility – Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex, which is a private for profit venture. Open space is available for special events at several parks and requires the approval of a Special Events Application. A Special Event is defined as any organized activity using park space that is either 1) open to the public or 2) a private function that requires reserved space or special set-ups beyond the typical facility rental of a shelter or a field. Parks and Recreation News Mountain Bike Trail Wins Honors JCC’s Freedom Park Loop C Mountain Bike Trail received top honors from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society (VRPS). The Trail won in the 2008 Best New Greenway, Blueway or Trail category for populations between 50,000-100,000. The award was presented in September during the 55th Annual VRPS Conference held in Roanoke. Housed in the County’s historic Freedom Park, the Loop C Mountain Bike Trail system was designed for bikers of all abilities.

However, the trail system does boast some 20 technical trail features to challenge even the most experienced riders.

Local members of the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association (EVMA) (pictured below) constructed the 3.22-mile Loop C, donating more than 950 volunteer hours for the layout, design and construction of the project. Parks and Recreation and EVMA worked together and completed Loop C in less than six months from start to finish. Loop C was constructed at no cost to County citizens. Winners were judged by a jury of their peers for demonstrated excellence in their entry areas.

Eagle Scout Project a Win, Win “Do a good turn daily” is one of several Boy Scout mottos. Patrick Corbett, Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop #102, took the slogan to heart as he completed his Eagle Scout Project at Jamestown Beach Campground. His project: refurbish picnic tables.

Patrick recruited 42 volunteers that included his troop and many parents. They gave some 158 hours of their time and energy to help complete his project in late September and early October. They sorted through more than 200 picnic tables and separated them into piles – the good, the can-be-fixed, and the cannotbe-fixed. From there, they refurbished 106 tables which will be distributed among County parks.

And the County saved money too. Alex Holloway, Park Operations Coordinator, noted this project, valued at more than $4,800 in labor costs alone, saved the County maintenance costs, and future cost in purchasing new picnic tables and cleaning up the site. This was definitely a win-win for the County and Patrick, who is working his way to the final ranking of Eagle Scout.

Photo Requirements • High resolution digital files are preferred.

Hard-copy photos (at least 5x7) will be accepted.

However, each entry must be of the best quality to be enlarged to 8x10 with minimum loss of quality.

• Vertically fomatted photos are preferred as they best fit the established brochure cover page format (see brochure covers above).

• The faces of all persons appearing in the photo must be at least dime-sized.

• Photos must be deemed decent and appropriate by Parks and Recreation based on the specifications defined in “Picture Content.”

Registration Refund Policy

• Facilities/Shelters/Fields – JCC Parks and Recreation will grant a refund for shelters/facilities/ fields that are canceled seven days prior to reservation date. A ten percent processing fee will be assessed.

• Class/Trip – To receive a refund/credit voucher, a request form must be submitted seven days prior to the class start date. They can be faxed to 259-5420.

All refunds/credit voucher requests will be assessed a $5 administrative fee. Pre-purchased goods are non-refundable. Documentation will be required for requests due to illness, injury, relocation, or family emergency made after the deadline.

• Passes – The Division will grant a refund for illness, injury, family emergency or relocation (over 35 miles) minus a 10 percent processing fee. Passes will be prorated from date of purchase. Documentation is required. Freezing may be allowed at the discretion of the Center Administrator and will only be done for medical reasons or leaving the area for more than 30 days with required proper documentations. Passes must have been active for a minimum of 30 days before freezing.

• Before/After School – A credit voucher, not a refund, will be given for missed days in the case of injury, illness, or family emergency (documentation will be required). A $5 administrative fee will be charged. A credit form must be filled out within seven days (hand-stamped or postmarked). A refund will be given for relocation over 35 miles. Credit vouchers will only be given if there is a change of payment status.

Annual Activity Waiver

Covers the entire family.

• Only needs to be completed and signed once a year.

• Once your household’s waiver is on file, you can call-in or register online for available activities.

Registration forms are required for all walk-in business in addition to Before/After School and Total Rec Camp Classes.

• The waiver is available at all Parks and Recreation locations, Satellite Services, as well as downloadable from our website. The Annual Activity Waiver allows you to list everyone in your household on one easy form. Dependents 18 and older will be required to complete a separate form. Bring your completed waiver and photo identification to any of our sites

for processing. Once your waiver is on file, you can register for activities over the telephone, by fax, on the web or in person. A signed waiver also permits JCC Parks and Recreation to take photographic images of adults and children participating in division programs for promotional uses.

Financial Assistance Policy

All JCC and Williamsburg residents may apply for a discount for Parks and Recreation program activities.

Residents wishing to apply for the discount will be required to complete a JCC Parks and Recreation Financial Aid Application form and provide proof of income annually. Income eligibility information and Financial Aid Application forms are available at any JCC Parks and Recreation facility. For more information on JCC Financial Assistance Policy, call 259-5416.

Inclement Weather Cancellation Policy

1. Programs held in W-JCC Schools will follow School Board decision on school closings. If schools are closed, programs are canceled.

2. Decisions regarding all other programs will be made based on the facility’s closing policy.

3. Local radio stations will be notified of any programs that are canceled due to inclement weather.

Instructors will attempt to notify participants if at all possible.

4. Any program sessions canceled due to the weather will be rescheduled, or credit vouchers/refunds will be given as appropriate.
