19 the father of MARY, wife of JOHN ARVIN, also belonged. Many Baptist ministers as well as ministers from other churches traveled from territory to territory preaching. They were called "itinerant" preachers although some of them had churches of their own. Following are the names of some of the itinerant preachers who practiced in Lunenburg County. Samuel Harriss James Shelburne of Reedy Creek Church Joseph Murphy Jeremiah Walker of Nottaway Church William Murphy Stephen Jones of Cedar Creek Church Elijah Baker Thomas Crymes of Tussekiah Church, John King also from Tussekiah Church were: James Reed William Ellis, Pleasant Barnes, Aaron Jones, T. W. Sydnor, E. S. Taylor, William Fisher, W. L. Lemon and James G. Jeffries. JOSEPH and WILLIAM MURPHY, were among the itinerant Baptist ministers in Lunenburg and other southern areas (even into North Carolina) in the seventeen hundreds. They were known as the "MURPHY BOYS". We have a MURPHY ancestor. Great grandmother, ELIZABETH MURPHY, married JONAS PETERS in Scott County, Virginia. Her brother was JOHN MURPHY, also a minister. If there was any relationship between the "MURPHY BOYS" and JOHN MURPHY I am not aware of it. The tithing rolls kept by the established church serve as one of the first censuses for the Lunenburg Community. While these tithes give only names and no ages there are times when we are happy to have even the name of an ancestor and to be able to place him in a certain area. As Mr. Bell stated, "It is a fortunate circumstance that all the lists for the early years, 1748, 1749, and 1750, are available. They present the earliest complete record, or census,
