Dir: Yariv Mozer, Israel, 2012, video, 68 min Hebrew, Arabic and English with English subtitles

Dir: Sébastien Lifshitz, France, 2012, HD Cam, 115 min French with English subtitles

Exiled from Palestine for being gay, Louie lives illegally across the border in Israel’s more accepting Tel Aviv. His asylum gets no recognition from the Israeli government, who prohibit that status for Palestinian nationals. After ten years hiding from the Israeli government and running from Palestine, Louie struggles to contemplate that his future does not lie in either country. Embraced by gay Israelis, the future for gay Palestinians like Louis is determined by the political conflict of their leaders. This intimate documentary distills the emotional and psychological impact the IsraeliPalestinian conflict has upon their gay citizens. Powerful, inspiring and heart wrenching, it contemplates what some must risk for selfrespect, love and somewhere to call home. In this fascinating documentary director Sébastien Lifshitz trains his lens upon eleven gay men and lesbians over the age of 70 as they discuss their lives in remarkable detail at the same time as painting an intriguing portrait of the progress of French social attitudes over the past 60 years. Concentrating on more rural and regional stories than those from the cities, Lifshitz acknowledges the inevitable homophobia and violence each may have encountered in their lives. But the portraits rarely remain maudlin or victim-focused and instead are fabulous celebrations of lives lived long, well and proudly. Lifshitz’s skills as a director of gay features (Going South 2009, Presque Rien 2000), shines through in this documentary, giving the film a welcome storytelling quality rather than a dry fact providing exercise. This one will warm the cockles of your heart! (LD) Winner Best Documentary 2012 Paris Lesbian Film Festival Melbourne Premiere
