8 summer might be slipping away into memory and winter may be looming, but things are hotting up on the big screen. as oscars season drifts onto the horizon, the great and the good are gearing up to dazzle us with the first clutch of awards contenders. amongst them is anna Karenina, leo tolstoy’s epic novel reimagined in a beautifully bold new vision by Joe Wright, who did sterling work with adapting the beloved likes of Pride and Prejudice and atonement. i, for one, am very excited to see how the sweeping drama pans out - and whether Keira Knightley, Jude law and aaron taylor-Johnson shape up
as the film’s protagonists. there’s also plenty of oscars buzz abuilding for upcoming crime thriller Killing them softly, which reunites Brad Pitt with director andrew dominik for the first time since the assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert ford. and no film has our action appetites salivating - and pulses racing - more than the latest Bond instalment, skyfall. despite being dogged by finance issues, the 23rd Bond film is finally here and, with daniel craig on top form and sam mendes directing, i’m expecting a blinder. don’t miss our special feature on p.10. 8 A literary adaptation from director Joe Wright starring Keira Knightley makes you think you know just what to expect - lavish period costumes, lush cinematography, and a spellbinding long take or two - but think again. Both Atonement and Pride and Prejudice earned significant Oscar buzz, and this time Wright is apparently gearing up to win big by turning the genre boldly on its head. Rather than film Tolstoy’s classic story of love, family ties and adultery among the Russian aristocracy in Moscow as originally planned, Wright surprised his muse Knightley with his vision for shooting nearly the entire film within a purpose-built, dilapidated theatre on English soil. In bringing the tale of tragic heroine Anna, her husband Aleksei Karenin (Law), and her lover, Count Vronksy (Taylor-Johnson), to life in a series of over 100 changing, interconnected sets, Wright will deliver a fluidity that just might succeed in compressing the lengthy novel’s narrative. While Wright has a record of filling his costume dramas with unorthodox aesthetics that place the viewer in the shoes of the character, this is sure to be a truly radical treatment of a much loved story. 8 Politics can be fun, right? Well, not particularly. But The Campaign gives it a damn good go (as well as a damn good kicking) and pits Will Ferrell against The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis in a battle of policies and comedy. From the director of Austin Powers and Meet The Parents, this is set to be a hilarious film right from the beginning and, with the spontaneous improvisational skills of its leads, you’ll never look at politicians in the same light again. The story follows long-time congressman Cam Brady (Ferrell) as two CEOs try to oust him from his position in North Carolina. To be fair, he’s never had an opponent and his tenure was always guaranteed, so their plan is reasonably justified. Their plan is to offer up a different candidate for the position, and they choose Marty Huggins (Galifianakis), the director of the local tourism centre. Things soon turn very sour indeed when both Brady’s and Huggins’ competitive sides become increasingly ugly. If you’re easily offended, you might want to avoid this. With crude humour, nudity and even baby punching, politics has never been so nasty. Matt Brigden

ond is back. 50 years since Dr No’s theatrical release, the Martiniswilling secret agent returns for his 23rd movie, Skyfall. 007 has changed his face many times in the last five decades, each iteration meeting the demands and expectations of the society that spawned them. From the ‘60s’ brash, chauvinistic Connery, through a ‘70s’ glam-fantasy Moore and right up to a sensitive ‘90s’ Brosnan - but it is Craig’s uber buff reboot persona that has seen the most substantial change. Finally including 9/11 as part of his story canon, Craig’s agent is smart, strong and almost Jack Bauer-esque in his ‘doing what needs to be done’. His new musculature (which is, incidentally, the first to be devoid of chest hair) means that, for the first time, we really believe Bond could batter half a dozen nameless henchmen with his bare hands. Yet, he remains vulnerable: nearly assassinated, clearly wincing when having his testicles battered and (most crippling of all) falling in love. This is a modern
Bond - powerful but human. Although there may be no Star Trek style ‘odd or even’ division, many expect a complacency to creep in after a few turns in the role: Thunderball, Moonraker, The World is Not Enough. Naysayers wait to see if Daniel Craig’s latest effort will also show signs of decline. Thankfully, they’ll have to wait a little longer. Even the most hardened 007 cynic cannot argue with Skyfall’s pedigree as it looks set to be the best of the rebooted Bonds yet. Royale: brilliant but too long, with a tacked final act romance. Solace: exciting but convoluted, playing out like Royale’s protracted epilogue. Skyfall begins a new chapter. After a failed mission, Bond is missing, presumed dead. During his absence, the name of every undercover MI6 operative has been leaked - and quickly the bodies pile up. After MI6 headquarters is attacked, Bond makes a sudden reappearance and is tasked by M to pursue the only lead available: former agent Raoul Silva. However, as the thread is pulled, Bond begins to suspect that there is more to the case than M is letting on. Having already reached the pinnacle of cinematic greatness
by skydiving with the Queen, the real excitement here is the support cast. Ralph Fiennes, Oscar winner and wizard botherer, plays a shifty politician investigating M’s handling of the crisis. Naomie Harris (Selena, 28 Days Later) is a Bond girl with a brain, while Q (Ben Wishaw) returns as a much younger incarnation of the iconic techno wizard. Most interesting of all, Javier Bardem returns to villainous form for the first time since No Country For Old Men. Having made Chigurh so terrifying (in spite of a ridiculous haircut), former agent Raoul Silva should prove to be an adversary that can match buff-Bond’s intensity. Even more, for the first time in the franchise’s recent history, a genuine household name will take the job as helmsman, by way of indie favourite Sam Mendes. Although more famous for dramas like American Beauty and Revolutionary Road, each time he has dipped his toe into ‘action’ (Jarhead, Road to Perdition), he

has brought with him a sense understatement and intelligence. Here gifted a stellar cast and one of cinema’s most iconic characters, expect the same demanding standards, only complemented by a bigger stage and a $150 million ‘event movie’ budget. However, most people forget that all of this Skyfalling goodness nearly didn’t happen... You see, it was only two years ago that we feared the Bond franchise might be dead: a casualty of the recession. While countless criminal masterminds, beautiful double agents and 10,000 rounds of ammunition have failed to even crease 007’s suit, the team of accountants at MGM studios almost killed him off for good. As one of Hollywood’s longest standing studios, Metro Golden Mayer was slow to respond to the changing face of modern cinema. 20 years of attrition came to a head in 2009, when more than $3 billion in the red, the global financial slowdown meant MGM could no longer pay its debts. Put simply, the interest alone cost $250 million a year, a sizable outlay from the company’s total revenue of $500 million. Survival for the last decade hinged on intermittently selling off chunks of their extensive back catalogue until a new Bond movie could be released, providing a cash injection lifeline - but, as soon as the credit crunch hit, this house of cards came falling down. Everything from The Hobbit to Robocop to Bond - all were at risk. The latter, already filming on location, was halted - effective immediately. After months of uncertainty, Bond survived (as did MGM, part sold and part restructured). Production resumed...and the rest is history. Assuming Skyfall does box office business, MGM is safe. And given that everything about Bond 23 is ‘A-list’ from the ground up story, director, cast - expect this to be the most successful entry in the franchise’s history. After a half century on the silver screen, Bond has survived his closest ever shave with death - and is looking all the better for it. Skyfall is released on 26th October.

8 Remakes and reboots always seem to demand comparisons to their predecessors - fortunately for Judge Dredd fans, both screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and director Peter Travis (Vantage Point) chose not to follow in the footsteps of the 1995 film starring Sly Stallone but, instead, chose to be faithful to the original character who first appeared in the 2000 AD comic back in 1977. The future America is an inhospitable place. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One - a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the streets. The only order lies with the Judges, who each have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Urban) is the ultimate Judge. Assigned to train and evaluate psychic Cassandra Anderson (Thirlby), the pair is challenged with purging the city of its latest scourge - the reality-altering drug SLO-MO. Dishing out justice left, right and centre, this ultraviolent adaptation won’t be for the squeamish, but will most certainly be a visually stunning, action-packed extravaganza - and possibly one of the best comic book movies this year! 8 Many recent feature films have been based on shorts, where the plot has been stretched out far too thinly to sustain anybody’s interests. You can rest assured, however, that Frankenweenie, a remake of Tim Burton’s 1984 short film of the same name, doesn’t fit into that category. How can it, when Tim Burton is once again the director? He’s one of the true cinematic greats, and doesn’t commit to a film if his heart isn’t in it. And the story is one with limitless scope, which is why it fits just as comfortably in a feature film as a short film. It follows young Victor (Tahan) who conducts a science experiment involving lightning in order to bring his dog - appropriately named Sparky - back to life. But there are horrible, monstrous consequences as Sparky wreaks havoc amongst Victor’s neighbours - and their pets - and Victor has to prevent disaster. At the same time, he has to prove to everyone that Sparky is still the loyal pup he used to be. As is to be expected with a Tim Burton film, the abnormal becomes deceptively normal. Matt Brigden

8 Dax Shepard co-directs and stars in this hilarious romantic action comedy as Charlie Bronson (Shepard), a getaway driver who is forced out of the witness protection program to help his unsuspecting girlfriend (Bell) get to Los Angeles. His old gang, led by a violent, dreadlock-adorned Bradley Cooper and incompetent state marshal Tom Arnold, pursues him. As they chase each other across America, Charlie must explain his shady bank-robbing past to his girlfriend while avoiding golf clubs to the nose, NASCAR speed crashes and wrinkly pensioner motel room orgies. It’s got car chases, shoot-outs and an uncommon number of jokes about what happened to Bradley Cooper’s character in the prison showers - think somewhere between The Killers and Gone In 60 Seconds with plenty of The Hangover thrown in for good measure. Not as serious as most driving movies, Hit and Run promises to be far funnier. While Shepard and Bell are always a pleasure to watch, it’s Cooper who might just steal the spotlight, though expect some laughs from Arnold as well. A new breed of action driving comedy: hilarious, cool and very, very crude. Alex Dibb

8 From the director of The Devil Wears Prada comes Hope Springs: a comedy about marriage. Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) are a devoted middle-aged couple celebrating 31 years of marriage. There is, however, a distinct lack of physical affection between the two. Kay decides that their relationship needs a little more sparkle and, after much persuasion, Arnold agrees to attend a week long intensive counselling session in Great Hope Springs with Dr. Feld (Carrell). Kay thought that persuading her stubborn husband to go to the sessions would be the difficult part, but the couple have much greater challenges to overcome, from letting go of the past and revitalising their marriage to rediscovering the spark that first brought them together all those years ago. Dr. Feld asks increasingly frank questions about their sexual fantasies as well as their feelings about each other in an attempt to rekindle their intimacy. Despite Arnold’s scepticism, they make many a failed attempt to wile away an amorous evening at a cheap motel and a movie theatre at Dr. Feld’s request. Starring the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez and Kevin James amongst a star-studded line-up, this latest comedy takes us to Dracula’s (Sandler) five-star resort for the world’s most famous monsters. To celebrate his daughter Mavis’s (Gomez) 188th birthday, Dracula invites Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves and more to celebrate. However, when a human boy stumbles into the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis, the night of celebrations soon comes to an end. Dracula’s world comes crashing down as he finds himself tasked with the job of trying to stop his daughter from falling in love with the boy before it is too late. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, best known for his work on Cartoon Network’s Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, and presented in eye-popping 3D, Hotel Transylvania looks set to be the number one place to stay this month. KILLING KiLLinG THEm tHEm SOFTLY SOFtLY 8 This tense crime thriller tells the story of Jackie Cogan (Pitt), a professional enforcer who operates as a point man for a cold-blooded hitman. Following a heist at a high-stakes, mob-protected poker game, Cogan is hired to conduct an investigation into the criminal underworld. George V. Higgins’ 1974 novel Cogan’s Trade provides the original prose for Andrew Dominik’s cinematic adaptation, which is renamed and transported to modern day New Orleans. The Australian-born filmmaker has proven his ability to craft films with slow-burning narratives and artistic flourishes, as shown in his previous partnership with Pitt - the contemporary cult western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Killing Them Softly boasts a strong support cast, including Richard Jenkins, Scoot McNairy and Sam Shepard. In addition, there are two legends of the crime thriller genre: Goodfellas star Ray Liotta and James Gandolfini, made famous by the HBO series The Sopranos. Labelled as this year’s Drive, Dominik’s film is set to light up cinemas and is poised for success in the fast-approaching Oscars season. Lee Curtis

8 Based on the true story of author Matt Bondurant’s family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, his novel The Wettest County in the World receives the Hollywood treatment in this gritty adaptation, helmed by Australian director John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition). Franklin County, Virginia is the backdrop for a bloody drama of three brothers - Forrest, Jack, and Howardand their moonshine success that draws the unwanted attention of the local law. Wanting in on their profits, crooked agent Charlie Rakes (Pearce) stirs up trouble for the brothers when Jack (LaBeouf) cuts a deal with Chicago gangster extraordinaire Floyd Banner (Oldman). Tom Hardy as Forrest is hot on the heels of his turn as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and script and score are both penned by Nick Cave. Bringing a feminine touch to what looks to be a largely testosterone-driven slice of Americana are Maggie (Chastain), a dancer escaping her past, and Bertha (Wasikowska), a not-so-innocent preacher’s daughter. 8 In the futuristic action thriller Looper, an assassination system has been set up involving ‘loopers’ in the film’s present and the mob 30 years into the film’s future. When the mob need to have someone eliminated, they send the target 30 years into their past where a hired gun, known as a ‘looper’, will be waiting to kill them. The targets have no ties to the time period so their murders don’t raise too many questions. Joe, played with grizzled intensity by Joseph GordonLevitt, is a looper, getting rich and enjoying the job. Things get complicated when the mob send back Joe’s future self to be killed. In true time travel movie fashion, paradoxes may occur - but don’t let this put you off. Looper promises to be one high-octane action thriller as Joe unravels the truth as to why he is forced to face himself in a way he could never imagine. Director Rian Johnson even has a few surprises intentionally kept hidden from any trailers. Plus Bruce Willis stars as Joe’s future self, and everybody loves a bit of Big Brucey. Ian J. Martin

The geographically inept quartet have been to Madagascar and Africa and all they want is to get back to their home in New York City - but, if the previous two films are anything to go by, this will not be an easy task. As the title suggests, the group end up in Europe and cannot leave until enough havoc has been wreaked. The team meet up with old friends King Julien (Cohen), who is as insane and inappropriate as he always has been, and the deviously cunning penguins who are still the brains of the entire operation. Eventually the gang end up hiding by joining a circus, which, of course, makes room for even more shenanigans. The formula for these films does not seem to be getting tired and this addition to the Madagascar saga promises to be every bit as outrageous and hilarious as its predecessors. Daniel Buckley

Shot entirely in 3D, not post-converted, the new Hill promises some real chills and is set to be a marked improvement on the underwhelming 2006 original. The director Michael J Bassett told fans that the film will deliver all the nightmares you can imagine. Whilst this subgenre has arguably been done to death (excuse the pun), Sinister looks to prove otherwise. True crime writer, Ellison (Hawke) moves into a new home with his wife and two children, hoping the move will trigger some inspiration for his writing. Unbeknownst to his family, four family members who lived in the house previously were found hanging from a tree in their backyard, whilst a fifth family member, a young girl, mysteriously vanished. Needless to say, our protagonist is pretty desperate for inspiration! Hoping to uncover clues about the whereabouts of the missing girl, Ellison soon finds a box in the attic containing super-8 movies, featuring several decades of ritualistic killings. If this discovery isn’t dark enough, Ellison notices a link between the killings and discovers that a malevolent force is at work - a force that consumes the souls of children. 8 Nick Love, director of Football Factory has decided to make this remake of the ‘70s’ TV show of the same name. The film (which is set in modern day London rather than the 1970s) stars Ray Winstone and Ben Drew as Jack Regan and George Carter respectively and, as such, it can be expected that this film will not carry the strong moral code that certain police procedurals do, but will instead be a no-nonsense gritty crime thriller. The Sweeney is a special branch of the Metropolitan Police who were criticised in the 1970s for using bribery and corruption in order to solve crimes and, while the television show did not show this side of them explicitly, this film promises to do exactly that. In essence then, it is a classic British cops and robbers drama that contains plenty of action and humour. This does not mean, however, that the film will be light-hearted. Anyone who has seen Love’s other crime-based films will know that stark violence and carnage is basically commonplace and dark narratives are anything but out of the ordinary. Daniel Buckley

8 A surprise hit back in 2008, Taken introduced us to a man who claimed to be able to kill everyone in his way in order to get his daughter back. And sure enough, he did kill them all. But did he really think he could knock off that many people without any repercussions? That’s the premise of Taken 2, which begins with Liam Neeson’s relentless killing machine Bryan Mills and his wife Lenore (Janssen) on holiday in Istanbul with their daughter Kim (Grace), who was the one who was ‘taken’ in the first film. His daughter has to take the initiative this time around, however, because it’s Bryan and his wife who are taken hostage by the relatives of the kidnappers he killed. Tightly written once again by The Fifth Element writer and director Luc Besson, Taken 2 will once again prove that you don’t want to get on the wrong side of Neeson, whose incredible action man skills would definitely mean he’d qualify to appear under ‘efficient’ in the dictionary. Usually The Lonely Island front man and star of Hot Rod would be enough to make this comedy stand out, but it’s the resurfacing of everyone’s second favourite early ‘90s white rapper, Vanilla Ice, that makes That’s My Boy more than a run-of-the-mill comedy. Playing a washed-up fictional version of himself, Vanilla is sure to be the cherry on the top of this promising comedy cake. Leighton Meester and James Caan round out the cast of this film, which is definitely not to be dismissed as another Jack And Jill. Expect crude humour, many jokes about Ice Ice Baby and many more about Vanilla’s ill-advised acting debut Cool As Ice. A duet between Vanilla Ice and The Lonely Island may be too much to ask for, but we live in hope. Alex Dibb

8 After the success of last year’s Midnight in Paris, esteemed comedy director Woody Allen returns to cinemas with another venture in Europe. Allen’s unique approach to the genre balances wit and satire with a personal sentiment, often in the form of a love letter to the city in question. The French capital was treated with the same romanticism that was celebrated in his earlier films set in New York, and the same can be expected for Rome. The narrative is centred on four vignettes, reflecting short and varied slices of life within the eternal city. There is a modest worker who wakens to discover he is a celebrity; a successful architect who returns to the streets he once lived on; a young couple on their honeymoon; and a funeral director with an unusual talent for opera. The film boasts an ensemble cast including experienced names such as Judy Davis, Alec Baldwin and Penélope Cruz, as well as young up-and-coming stars Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page. It also sees the great director himself starring in his first acting role since his 2006 film Scoop. Lee Curtis
