Our festival is having growing pains...and our parking is very limited, particularly on Saturday morning, due to the parade and 5K run. Please consider parking outside the business district on Saturday and either walking or hop aboard our free shuttle. Keep in mind that parts of Business Boulevard will be closed all weekend. The closure begins on Friday at 10 a.m. runs through Sunday at 6 p.m. All traffic will be routed around that area via Regency Drive. Safety is our highest priority. We know the road closure increases traffic congestion, but the higher priority is to protect families and children walking between the vendors, the Mainstage and the carnival. If you are driving in the area, please be respectful and drive slowly. Thank you!
A quiet place for family time
Within the Carnival show, at the Eagle River Commons, look for the baby changing and nursing station — a quiet retreat for parents and kids with rocking chairs and friendly staff. Look for the tent sponsored annually by the good folks at Alliance Christian Fellowship.

Perhaps leave pets at home
We love our pets but unless your animal is very comfortable around lots of people, cars, noise and rides, it is a good idea to keep them at home when you visit the festival. Over the years, we have had a number of inadvertent bites because animals are stressed. Your pet may do fine until placed in a strange environment with other pets, people and unfamiliar noise. Remember: Safety first. But if your pup is down for a festival visit and needs a drink of water, there is a watering station for puppies at Town Center Park Bricked Pavillion sponsored by Home Away From Home K-9 Day Care. Good things start with a vibrant community
When people care, it shows. Members of this community cared enough to put time and effort into making this event happen. And today, life for everyone here got a little bit richer. It’s a joy to celebrate the Bear Paw Festival. Eagle River • 16600 Centerfield Drive • 907-689-4221

BEAR PAW FESTIVAL • JULY 2014 7
CAUTION!
Bears are everywhere… and have constructed the best festival in the land! This year, Bear Paw celebrates 100 years of construction, trade, commerce, and growth in conjunction with the Anchorage Centennial Celebration (you know... our friendly brethren across the river). Everyone knows there are two seasons in Alaska: Winter and the Construction Season! Bear Paw Festival events feature the refinement of long-time favorites, with a blending of exciting new projects, and we are looking forward to showing you around the site. There is a full schedule of events beginning with a luncheon on Wednesday and culminating with the classic I-DID-ADUCK on Sunday afternoon. Planning for this festival began the day after 2013’s ended. Organizations and volunteers from across our community have come together to construct this fabulous event. Without their enthusiasm, passion, and community pride, this project would not be possible. As you see our Bear Paw “construction workers” at the many scheduled events this weekend, please thank them for the thousands of hours they spent building this year’s Bear Paw Festival. Because of the hard work and dedication of our many community volunteers, corporate partners and citizens, we can continue the tradition of providing good, family fun for all. Rain or shine, the Bear Paw Festival has something for everyone! The festival is just one of the many things your Chugiak-Eagle Chamber of Commerce does to make this “the most livable community in Alaska.” We continue to promote not only the economy of the area, but the unique quality of life that we enjoy. Roll up your sleeves and get busy having fun with events for every one of your family members, friends, and neighbors. Thank you for attending and enjoy!

welcome to bear paw The Bear Paw Festival activities are as varied as the community. Join us for one of the many events happening during the festival weekend as we celebrate this year’s theme, “Caution! Bears Working!” This year’s festival will feature all of the favorites— including the Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest, Slippery Salmon Olympics, Carrs/Safeway ice cream eating contest, talent show, dog and owner look-a-like contest and the 300-yard marathon (because after 300 yards it isn’t fun anymore). And don’t forget the IBEW Alaskan Seafood Gone Wild! And lots, lots more. There’s also plenty of food to enjoy at the many food vendors in our vendor court. The festival draws participation from the entire Southcentral region of Alaska, and we are proud that almost all of the efforts expended on staging this festival are derived from dedicated volunteers. The goal is for families to spend an enjoyable weekend, have a great deal of fun and not hamper the family resources. Rather than have “gated” admissions, we rely upon the Friends of the Festival and corporate partners to underwrite the infrastructure expenses. The Bear Paw Festival benefits the community in a variety of ways. It instills a sense of community among the residents, it provides an opportunity to showcase the area to all of Southcentral Alaska, and it is also a valuable resource to the nonprofit and business community. Inside this book you’ll find everything you need to know to enoy the festival, including schedules and descriptions of events. Finally, please don’t forget the most important rule of all at the festival – HAVE FUN!!

the grand parade
Are you ready? It’s time for the “Bears Working!” Grand Parade. The Grand Parade will fill the business district with floats, clowns, kids and music. The parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday morning and follows the route down the Old Glenn Highway, Business Boulevard and Centerfield Drive in downtown Eagle River. The parade features a variety of entries, including floats, beauty queens, Cub Scouts, lords and ladies of the realm, fire trucks, drill teams and kids on bikes. In addition to winning ribbons in their categories, there are three special awards given each year. They include the Grand Sweepstake Award trophy, which is presented to the entry that signifies the most outstanding contribution to the parade. Applications will be accepted until the parade is full. There is a public safety limit on size of entries and length of the parade. Call the chamber at 694-4702 for more information. Welcome Ron Lange, Parade Grand Marshall Who wins more awards for his hometown than anybody else in the state of Alaska? Who started his career at Baskin & Robbins, spent summers mowing lawns AND worked as a stage guard for George Michaels, Paul McCartney, Madonna, and Guns and Roses? Who do we know that was a waiter at Cinders and a tennis pro back in the 1980’s while spending his off hours guarding the Beauty Queen Princess at the Texas Tractor Pull? Who is this mystery person that boasts his most difficult job in life as stage guard for his beautiful daughter Samantha? Why our mystery celebrity is none other than Chugiak High School Choir Director, Ron Lange, our 2014 Grand Marshall! All of the above are true but we know him as producing the sweetest choral voices in Alaska and arguably the world. His choirs have traveled throughout the United States, Great Britain, Europe and China routinely taking gold in virtually every competition entered. We forgive him for being an avid Dallas Cowboys fan as we celebrate his 20 years as Chugiak High School’s most famous faculty the award winning Ron Lange!

it’s a teddy bear picnic BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Join us on Friday July 11 at 11 a.m. for a day full of old-fashioned picnic games. Come on out to the Eagle River Commons, and join us for the Teddy Bear Picnic. It’s a fun-filled way to start the Bear Paw Festival. Younger “cubs” will enjoy story time, as well as games and age appropriate activities. Miss Bear Paw will be on hand to lead the Teddy Bear Parade, so bring your favorite teddy bear friend down to the picnic. Registration for the parade begins at 11 a.m. Magician Don Russell will be on hand to amaze and entertain you. Face painters will add a creative touch to your cheeks, along with the rosy glow from a great day of activities! Hot dogs will be the main course, along with juice & cookies. Host Chef is our own Martha Rogers, Peters Creek Inn & Catering. Be the first on your block to race an eggplant at the Lunch Box Derby. Let your imagination run wild and build a racecar made completely out of fruits and vegetables. Cars are made using toothpicks, bamboo skewers and rubber bands. This is the time to bring out all those engineering skills. The cars will race down a 4 x 8 foot ramp. The distance traveled will be from the top of the ramp to the front end of the main car body. The race will take place Friday at noon at the Teddy Bear Picnic at the Eagle River Commons. Fruits and vegetables will be available on site to build your derby entry. The entire Teddy Bear Picnic, and more, is brought to you free through the generous support many local businesses. Special thanks to our sponsors VFW Post 9785, Carrs/Safeway, Peters Creek Inn and Alaska Regional Hospital. www.bearpawfestival.org

All these and more are available from the outdoor food vendors located at the Valley River Center concession area. Be sure and enjoy an icy cold Coca-Cola throughout the Festival grounds. Vendors are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Anchorage Markets also offer a full Vendor Court stage with lots of fun local entertainment.

Events: Continued from Page 18 It’s a shoot-out! Stop by Jitters Coffee Shop throughout the festival and vote for the people’s choice awards in the annual Bear Paw Photo Contest! The People’s Choice Award will be presented at the end of the 2014 Bear Paw Festival. Now in its seventh year, the Bear Paw Festival Photography Contest is sponsored by Gutierrez Photography, Jitters Coffee and Eagle River Camera Club. Opening reception for entry winners is July 11th at Jitters. All winning photos will remain on display through July 30 at Jitters in the Eagle River Shopping Center, 11401 Old Glenn Hwy. Bicycle Safety Rodeo The Good Neigh-bear says, “Mount Up and Ride Right.” Kids K-12 years and parents, join us for fun, prizes and IMPORTANT bike safety tips on Saturday, July 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union Parking lot at Mainstage. Fred Meyer and Eagle River State Farm Insurance Agents Troy Sayer and Al Bowler of Eagle River Area Rotary Club, along with the many other volunteers, coordinate this event. Kids, bring your bikes and helmets — and if you need a helmet, arrangements will be made for you to be fitted for a free helmet. Participants begin the “rodeo” by properly fitting their helmet and learning the “rules of the road.” Complete the bike safety course and you could win a new bicycle and helmet courtesy of Fred Meyer.
Duct Tape Sculpture Spenard Builders Supply hosts the Super Bear Sculpture and we want “YOU” to help build it. Come by the Mainstage beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m. Duct tape will be on hand. Bear-struction resumes Saturday immediately following the parade and continues through Sunday. Think of a creative name for our stately bruin! The most original name will win a $250 gift certificate from Spenard Builders Supply. Winning entry will be announced Sunday afternoon. All names must be in by 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Mainstage. Stop by, add some tape and creative flare, and help name this year’s creation! Slippery Salmon Just picture it: Hula hoops, orange cones and a very slippery salmon. Throw in a glass of soda on a tray and you’ve got a race. Teams of two race against the clock for bragging rights and a real cool trophy. MTA sponsors this race annually and this year the proceeds benefit Chugiakwww.bearpawfestival.org
Eagle River Foundation. Team entry fee is $100. Run with the Bears You’ve heard of Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Running of the Reindeer in Anchorage? Now, Bear Paw brings you “Running With The Bears” in Eagle River. This “bear-ly” a marathon 300-yard fun run was started because after 300 yards, it isn’t fun any more. This is running as it should be Eagle Academy Charter School 10901 Mausel St., Ste. 101, Eagle River, Alaska 99577

done…as briefly as possible! This race should appeal to even the laziest of lounge lizards. You could win a round trip for two to Seward on the Alaska Railroad and many other great prizes. There will never be an easier way to get a race T-shirt this summer. Think how great it will look on you when you’re back home watching TV. The event begins with the “the Warm-Up Stretch” at 1 p.m. with our friends from Jazzercise; the race starts promptly at 1:05 p.m. You have 30 minutes to complete this racecourse…you can crawl, roll, stroll, walk, or run with the bears (and we promise...there will be bears!) And watch out...if you get “bit” you need to check-in at First National’s Aid Station. All participants receive a T-shirt (while supplies last) courtesy of First National Bank Alaska, and chances to win great prizes. Preregistration fee is $15. Race day registration is $20. You must be present to win. Pre-registration can be done at the Chamber office through Friday, July 11 and at the Mainstage on Saturday, July 12. Sunday is late day registrations, which will be taken up until race time with late registration fee. Think costumes and a beary fun Alaskan experience. Registration forms available at bearpawfestival.org.
Horses and wagons and celebrations, oh my! Tour the Festival with Chugiak-Eagle River’s own Horse Drawn Carriage Company! They will offer rides beginning on Business Boulevard on Saturday and Sunday. Cost will be $5 per person. These gentle giants will take you on a leisurely ride throughout the Festival area. See EVENTS, Page 29

Bear Paw Pageant
Royalty to be crowned
Come out to the Chugiak High School Auditorium on Thursday, July 10, at 7 p.m. and cheer on our own local teens. The Bear Paw Pageant is not your typical event. Young men and women who are enrolled in grades 9-12 and who reside in this area will compete in costume competition and personal interviews. This is a pageant based on poise, creativity, friendliness and service to community. Miss Bear Paw 2014 will receive a $1000 scholarship and a $500 scholarship will be awarded to the contestant who is selected with the most outstanding community service record. Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club is providing both the Academic Scholarship and Community Service Scholarship for the Women and the Community Service Scholarship for the Men. The Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation is underwriting the Men’s Academic Scholarship. Bear Paw King will receive a $1000 scholarship sponsored by the Chugiak-Eagle River Foundation. The Prince and Princess will join in the year of activities as schedules permit along with the King and Queen. Following the pageant, all contestants participate in various festival events as a group, providing an entire weekend of fun and community service credits.
