Daniel’s aiming to be the quickest kid on the planet On a wing and a prayer: Daniel Arapakis is eyeing gold at next month’s model aircraft world titles – this time in Sweden. Picture: Yanni

THE skies are blue for Mornington model aircraft flyer Daniel Arapakis who takes off for Sweden next month to compete in his second world championships. The 16-year-old started flying model aircraft only four years ago at Western Port Model Aero Club, Crib Point. In 2015, as a 14-year-old, he flew at the world pylon racing championships in the Czech Republic and won a third place and bronze medal – the youngest pilot ever to do so. Now, two years on, Daniel has multiple wins and placings in pylon racing events which are held around the country. And, according to dad Andrew, his extra experience and maturity this time around means he is “race prepared with millimetre-perfect equipment as well as a passion to be the quickest kid on earth”. Daniel’s FAI class F3D aircraft are custom built and his engines are prepared by Barry Murphy who is internationally known for building aircraft with high performance and reliability. This year’s world championships will be held in the last week of July in Dala Jarna, Sweden. The race consists of 14 rounds. Each round is four kilometres long and consists of 10 x 400-metre laps flying a circuit with pylons marking each turn. The planes travel at 350kph and are fuelled by methanol. The top pilots finish the race distance in less than one minute. The FAI class called F3D is the pinnacle of aero modelling as a sport world-wide and the Australian team consist of three seniors and one junior and is considered as one of the world’s most competitive. Call to fight planning changes Mike Hast mike@mpnews.com.au THE state Labor government’s planning department has no interest in protecting the Mornington Peninsula from overdevelopment, says RMIT planning specialist Professor Michael Buxton. Peninsula residents will have to fight hard to protect the shire from overdevelopment and will have to involve themselves in the future governance of the region as well as put electoral

pressure on the government, he told a meeting of more than 300 residents at Hastings last Thursday night. The meeting had been called to explain recent changes in state government planning laws that will allow developers to build three-storey houses up to 11 metres high in 10 towns on the Mornington Peninsula – Capel Sound (formerly Rosebud West), Rosebud, Dromana, parts of Mt Martha, Mornington, Baxter, Somerville, Tyabb, Hastings and Bittern.

Developments can occur with no notifications and no rights of appeal. The first thing many neighbours will know about a development is when builders show up one day at 7am. Professor Buxton said the government “has a loathing of height controls” and residents and the shire council will have to join forces to oppose planning changes that favour the development industry. He said Victoria had benefited from the long-term vision of state Liberal

Premier Dick Hamer and his planning minister Alan Hunt (father of Flinders MP Greg Hunt) when they introduced planning schemes in the 1970s for high value agricultural regions such as the Mornington Peninsula as well as Upper Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and Macedon ranges. The Mornington Peninsula Planning Scheme put an end to a proposal for a new suburb for 40,000 people on the Moorooduc Plains between Mornington and Somerville, and protected

green wedge-type areas from subdivision. Professor Buxton said the scheme had protected the peninsula well but now was another critical time with developers eyeing off the region. In March, the state government amended all Victorian planning schemes and implemented significant changes to zones, including the General Residential Zone, which applies to most built-up parts of the peninsula. Sleepout highlights the homeless Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au SLEEPING out in the cold is a tough ask even for one night – let alone on a regular basis. But it’s a common plight on the Mornington Peninsula for many people without jobs or on low incomes – and one being made worse by the scarcity of affordable rental properties and the closure of several traditionally cheap and accessible caravan parks. Mt Martha-based Fusion Australia – an organisation which works with the homeless – estimates up to 2000 people sleep “rough”, or in their cars, on the peninsula every night. To help them, it is running its third Sleep in Your Car 2017 event during Homelessness Week at Mornington Park on Saturday 5 August. The event aims to raise $30,000 which Fusion says will help “continue to change the lives of vulnerable young people in our community”. Fusion Mornington Peninsula housing co-ordinator Stuart Bell said those experiencing homelessness resort to sleeping anywhere they can, whether in a friend’s garage, on a couch, underneath a beach box, in a park or a building site. “Others may be lucky enough to access some form of emergency accommodation,” he said. “In other cases, people may end up in boarding houses which are often exploitative and sometimes unsafe places to live.” Rental affordability and availability is problematic, Mr Bell said. “With

Christmas lunch A TRADITIONAL Christmas in July lunch at Rosebud next month will aid the Cloverleaf organisation which provides a caring and supported permanent residence for those living with a disability. The lunch is 12.30pm, Sunday 23 July, at Rosebud Country Club, 207 Boneo Rd, Rosebud. The cost is $60 per person with drinks at bar prices. The event is billed as a fun-filled afternoon with entertainment, door prizes, auction and a raffle. To buy tickets call Carole 5991 5117 or 0409 253 651 or email sclowther@ bigpond.com Those attending should RSVP by 14 July. Those unable to attend are welcome to talk to Carole about making a tax-deductable donation.

people now competing for available rental properties, young people, who are often on very low incomes, may find accessing a tenancy extremely difficult if not impossible in the current environment. “There is a very low stock of available social and community housing.” Sleep in Your Car 2017 organiser Stephanie Byrne said those attending the 5 August event, but who are

unable to sleep out, were welcome to join in from 5.30pm to “learn about homelessness in the community and break down some of the stereotypes around young people experiencing homelessness”. They will be invited to “walk in the shoes of someone experiencing homelessness” through Fusion’s Walk Without Home simulation, and hear advice from homelessness services

and support systems. They can learn how to support someone at risk of, or who is experiencing, homelessness and “interact with the group’s art installation and local musicians around the narrative of the night”. Register for the Mornington Peninsula event at sleepinyourcar.com.au Food and coffee will be on sale.

A SILVER Great Wall utility drove south – in the north-bound lane – of Nepean Highway, Frankston, last week, with concerned police shadowing it on the left side of the road. Sergeant Phil Hulley, of Frankston police, said the crew of a divisional van spotted the ute with its headlights off at traffic lights in Wells Rd, 1.47am, Friday 16 June. The ute did a U-turn onto Nepean Highway and, with police driving alongside it in the correct lane, drove down the wrong side of the road across several intersections at about 40kph. Luckily there were no collisions. The police air wing and dog squad were called in but the car managed to elude police and went missing near Nursery Av, Frankston. The ute had been stolen from Somerville the night before. The divisional van damaged a rear tyre trying to apprehend it.

Shire seeks easier path Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au

Bright future: Mornington Peninsula Netball Association president Debbie Brown with Dunkley MP Chris Crewther and the mayor Cr Bev Colomb.

New light on netball fun MORNINGTON netballers have celebrated the opening of the seven Elsie Dorrington Reserve netball courts, following the recent completion of court upgrades and lighting. The project was jointly funded by the federal government ($500,000), state government ($100,000), Mornington Peninsula Shire Council ($363,568), and Mornington Netball Association ($50,000). The mayor Cr Bev Colomb said the competition standard lighting would aid night games. “It will grow the number of events that can be hosted on the reserve,” she said. “I’m pleased to see this upgrade finally

complete and I am looking forward to seeing the increase in competitive sports in the region from this important project.” Regional development minister Fiona Nash said the upgrade would help attract finals and regional sporting events. “I aim to build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and providing modern, well equipped and safe sporting facilities definitely helps do that.” Dunkley MP Chris Crewther said: “Netball courts like these are where Australia’s future sporting stars are born and allow for our sporting clubs to thrive and expand.”

IN the face of widespread criticism, Mornington Peninsula Shire is now calling for comment on the process it uses to bill residents when apportioning footpath construction costs. Without specifically mentioning footpaths, the shire has issued a news release “inviting residents to provide feedback on the recently reviewed Special Charge Schemes Policy for Infrastructure Works”. The review followed a costly defeat late last year for the shire at the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal when Somers residents successfully objected to a plan for them to pay for more than five kilometres of concrete paths through their town. The shire’s forward planning committee met at Balnarring last week to hear residents’ views on “what walking and pedestrian movement facilities” they would like in Somers. In its invitation to the meeting the shire attributed its loss at VCAT “an administrative error”. However, at the time, the landmark decision by VCAT was predicted to have far reaching effects for the shire and any plans it has to build new concrete paths on the peninsula. The loss at VCAT also followed revelations in August 2016 that showed the shire’s footpath construction scheme was in disarray, with 13 projects being deferred and two others awaiting appeals. Opposition to footpath construction plans in some areas was a boon to others, with $404,000 being reallocated to fix footpaths at Hastings, Somerville and Bittern. Sharing the costs of building footpaths had become so unpopular that the highest support recorded in a survey of property owners for nine schemes was just 28 per cent. One footpath was rejected by all property owners.

Imposing the footpath costs on ratepayers has also led to some unintended saving with a “typographical error” being blamed for an apparent 42 per cent blowout in the cost of a footpath in South Rd, Rosebud. Under the council’s own rules, any cost variation above five per cent has to be paid by the shire and cannot be passed on to contributors to the special charge scheme. As reported by The News in December 2015 councillors were wrongly told that the cost would be $135,000 when the final bill was $191,715 the shire had to pick up the $56,715 (a discrepancy which would eventiually have been paid by all ratepayers). In April 2016, councillors called a review of the shire’s special charge schemes policy – which can include roads – and the resulting draft policy is now on public exhibition. The revised policy proposes the following changes:  Providing an earlier opportunity for community feedback before the formal process of starting a special charge scheme.  Better “defining” council's financial contribution to schemes.  Clarifying the process undertaken by the shire in implementing and managing a special charge scheme. This final point is framed to “assist the community in understanding the rationale behind a scheme”. The draft policy is available at mornpen.vic. gov.au/haveyoursay or the shire’s Rosebud, Mornington and Hastings offices. Submissions must be received by 5pm on Monday 24 July.

Police patrol Drink-driver off road A MAN allegedly caught drink-driving in Frankston last week has been taken off the road. Somerville Highway Patrol nabbed the man at 111 kph in an 80 kph zone on Frankston-Dandenong Rd about 3am. The 25-year-old, of Corio, had three passengers on board. He had a blood alcohol reading of 0.151 per cent. Police media officer Hannah Rowlands said the man’s licence was immediately suspended for 12 months and his car impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1005. He is expected to be charged on summons with drink-driving offences.

Derelict house fire A SMALL explosion caused a fire at a derelict house in Hall Rd, Carrum Downs, last week, but did only minor damage. The long-vacant brick veneer – with many smashed windows and covered in graffiti – is a bone of contention among neighbours who want it demolished after being derelict for seven years. Frankston police said vandals were behind the small fire, 11.50pm, Saturday 17 June, which failed to burn through to the interior. Carrum Downs CFA took little time in controlling the blaze at the property, on the corner of McCormicks Rd.

Not on the menu A TEACHING chef at Chisholm TAFE received an electric shock while plugging in an ice cream maker, 9.45am, Wednesday 14 June. The Langwarrin man, 40, was taken to Frankston Hospital for treatment. Police and ambulance officers attended and WorkSafe notified.

Flinders leads state when it comes to having a stroke Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au

FAST check for stroke

PEOPLE living on the Mornington Peninsula are statistically more likely to suffer a stroke than those living anywhere else in Victoria. The federal electorate of Flinders, held for the Liberal Party by Health Minister Greg Hunt, is the worst of the state’s four stroke “hotspots identified in the latest Stroke Foundation report. The latest predictions show nearly 500 residents of the Flinders electorate are expected to have a stroke this year, resulting in 116 deaths. The number of strokes in Flinders is predicted to grow to 1294 by 2050. According to the foundation’s No Postcode Untouched: Stroke in Australia 2017 report, strokes are caused by high blood pressure, lack of physical activity, high cholesterol and atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). Flinders is listed as having 75,000 people classed as being physically inactive; 44,000 with high cholesterol; 33,000 with high blood pressure; and 4000 with atrial fibrillation. Flinders is ninth nationally for having the highest levels of cholesterol and is the highest in Victoria. Other non-modifiable risk factors for stroke include age, gender and family history of stroke. The foundation says many people are unaware of their risk. Other Victorian electorates in the Australia’s top 20 where people are seen as having a high risk of stroke are Chisholm, Goldstein and Maribyrnong. Stroke Foundation Victorian state manager Scott Stirling said stroke “is no longer a death

THE Stroke Foundation recommends the FAST test as an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke. Using the FAST test for stroke involves: Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? Arms Can they lift both arms? Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away. Other signs of stroke may include one, or a combination of: Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body; Difficulty speaking or understanding; Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall; Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes; Headache, usually severe and abrupt onset or unexplained change in the pattern of headaches; Difficulty swallowing. The signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination and they can last a few seconds or up to 24 hours and then disappear. When symptoms disappear within 24 hours, this episode may be a mini stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA).

sentence for many, however patient outcomes vary widely across the country depending on where people live. “This report paints an alarming picture, with residents estimated to suffer almost 14,000 strokes this year, many of these strokes will be experienced by people living outside of Melbourne,’’ Mr Stirling said. “It is a tragedy that only a small percentage of stroke patients nationally are getting access to the latest treatments and ongoing specialist care that we know saves lives, he said. Chair of the foundation’s clinical council Associate Professor Bruce Campbell said Australian clinicians were international leaders in advancements in acute stroke treatment, such as endovascular clot retrieval. “It’s not fair that our health system forces patients into this cruel lottery, Prof Campbell said. “Consistent lack of stroke-specific funding and poor resourcing is costing us lives and money. For the most part, doctors and nurses are doing what they can in a system that is fragmented, under-resourced and overwhelmed. Mr Stirling said there is one stroke in Australia every nine minutes and unless action was taken this would rise to one stroke every four minutes by 2050. “Stroke doesn’t discriminate, it impacts people of all ages and while more people are surviving stroke, its impact on survivors and their families is far reaching, he said. The stroke foundation wants a national action campaign to ensure every Australian household has someone who can recognise the signs of stroke and to call 000.

Using ‘powers’ to prevent elder abuse A BOOKLET described as a practical guide for helping older members of the community combat elder abuse was launched last week. The joint publication by the Office of the Public Advocate arises from a project led by the Commissioner for Senior Victorians, Gerard Mansour, and advises on how to safely appoint a power of attorney. Your voice – Trust Your Choice: Tips for Seniors Making Enduring Powers Of Attorney, was launched at a forum at Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Mornington offices by Cr Antonella Celli. She welcomed Mr Mansour, who is also Ambassador for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, as well as Dr John Chesterman from the Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) and Gary Ferguson from Senior Rights Victoria, as well as members of Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders (PACE). “I found it particularly worrying that many older people, even victims themselves, were unaware of what elder abuse was, and even sometimes that they were being abused themselves,” Mr Mansour said. “This booklet will help seniors take control of their future and prevent abuse from occurring.” PACE’s Jeanette Lane said one of the most devastating forms of elder abuse was where the person trusted as an appointed attorney becomes the perpetrator of abuse. “An enduring power of attorney is where you give someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf,” she said. “Unfortunately, in some cases, family members, carers or friends put pressure on an older person to be appointed as power of attorney, and

then take advantage of the authority. This is a form of elder abuse.” The booklet explains how to choose a power of attorney, your rights, sample wording, what to do if you are being pressured or experience conflict of interest, and where to go for help. It is a companion booklet to the OPA’s Taking Control: A Guide for Making Enduring Powers Of Attorney.

SEAROAD Ferries has won a lucrative contract to run the Western Port ferry service between French Island, Phillip Island and Stony Point. The company, trading as Western Port Ferries, will run the service for five years from Saturday 1 July. The existing operator, Inter Island Ferries – whose contract ends on that day – is believed to carry about 32,000 passengers a year. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan says she “expects that number to rise under the new operator”. Searoad Ferries says it aims to boost the number of services by more than 30 per cent, including a new daily service direct from Stony Point to Phillip

Island, with the new 95 passenger, 18-metre vessel MV Naturaliste when it starts in September. In the interim, the company has bought the 12 metre Island Explorer, which will begin taking passengers on Saturday. “This is an exciting opportunity for Searoad Ferries,” CEO Matt McDonald said. “We look forward to providing a safe and reliable service that meets the needs of the local communities through our new Western Port Ferries operation.” Established in 1983, Searoad Ferries has been running the SorrentoQueenscliff car-ferry service with two vessels for many years. Inter Island Ferries proprietor Frank Denvir, who held the contract for the past 22 years, said he had “no regrets”

about not bidding for the new contract with five-year option. “If I took on another five-year contract I would be 77 and I have better things to do with my time,” he said. He said “no one” could reasonably be expected to comply with the PTV tender requirements because of the unpredictable weather and large tide discrepancy in Western Port. “They say the ferry must run 95 per cent of the time, but that cannot be done. Over the past 22 years we have had a 90 per cent adherence rate to the time table,” Mr Denvir said. “I was quite happy plodding along, but how can you fight time and tide.” Ms Allan said the government was “making sure locals have more reliable and regular services from French Island, Phillip Island and Stony Point.

CFA crews worked desperately to prevent a B-double truck’s huge liquefied petroleum gas tanks exploding after a fatal collision in Tyabb on Thursday night. Police are investigating why a black Mercedes sedan travelling south on DandenongHastings Rd at 8.15pm crossed onto the wrong side of the road and ran head-on into the tanker. Both vehicles caught fire, but luckily it did not extend to the 20 tonnes of LPG on board the tanker. The driver of the Mercedes, a 49-yearold Hastings man, died at the scene while the driver of the tanker escaped with minor injuries. CFA District 8 operations officer Don Wilkie said more than 100 firefighters worked to gain control of the fire just before midnight. “The first responding crews did a fantastic job calling for the most appropriate equipment and had to make some quick decisions,” he said. “The fact is this could have been much worse if there was an explosion. This great work by all agencies contributed to lowering the risk of this happening.” Tyabb CFA Captain Steve Birkinshaw said when CFA crews arrived on scene they were confronted with “a fireball”. “They weren’t sure if the large tanks were involved or not, but, fortunately, they were not,” he said. Firefighters stayed at the scene throughout the night and remained onsite until the decanting was completed, Friday afternoon. Western Port Highway was closed between Bungower Rd, Somerville and FrankstonFlinders Rd, Tyabb. Senior Constable Adam West, of police media, said anyone who saw the collision or has any information should contact Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic. com.au

Shire, residents urged to unite over planning laws Continued from Page 1 Plan Melbourne 2017-2050 allows for houses of up to 11 metres and three-storeys in the GRZ with no notification and no right of appeal. Professor Buxton criticised recent attempts to allow tourism accommodation to be built in green wedge zones including on the peninsula. “Big standalone tourism complexes provide little benefit to existing towns,” he said. “Developers and operators want to keep guests on site and extract every dollar from them.” He called for stronger state planning policy to protect the peninsula and its scenic landscapes. “The peninsula could be declared a food bowl region. Its unique towns should be protected. Put a line around rural areas and say hands off. “The peninsula is an area of international significance with world-scale landscape values, biodiversity, beautiful coastlines, and vibrant communities.” Professor Buxton warned the Labor government intended to privatise the entire planning system, and a tender had been let to rewrite all documentation. “This is a new idea designed to shut residents out of planning matters, and move development applications into a category where no permits are required,” he said. Construction of mediumdensity housing and apartments would be approved without any advertising. He said beware of claims about getting rid of red tape: “This is a cover for giving planning to the development industry.” Professor Buxton urged residents to “like Hamer and Hunt, look forward 50 years and even 100 years” and promote the core belief of protecting the peninsula. Cr David Gill said that “for 40 years we have had bipartisan political agreement that the peninsula is unique and should not be treated with

one-size-fits-all suburban planning regulations”. “Our peninsula has been mainly protected from the Melbourne sprawl and the worst kinds of development. This requires localised protections built into our planning scheme,” he said. “It is very doubtful that planning minister Richard Wynne will allow the shire to change to a neighbourhood residential zone that allows more protections including height controls, limiting houses to two storeys.”

He said the shire would attempt to introduce an interim design and development overlay (DDO) to stop three-storey houses. “However our planning overlays can be removed by the minister. “All of this puts in doubt the shire’s wish to adopt enhanced green wedge zone regulations preventing unacceptable development in rural areas. “It looks like the peninsula is being softened up for the powerful development lobby to under-

mine the 40-year politically bipartisan protections built into the planning scheme in order to properly plan the future of our region.” Christine Haydon of Peninsula Speaks told the meeting a petition was being organised and a community committee would be formed to coordinate opposition. Gas plans to increase truck flows Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE main road leading from Western Port to Melbourne was closed to all traffic on Thursday night following a fatal crash between a car and a loaded liquid gas tanker at Tyabb. A major explosion was averted by emergency crews and gas was still being removed from the tanker early Friday afternoon. Authorities also feared the blaze – attributed to the tanker’s fuel tanks – had damaged the surface of Hastings-Dandenong Rd. The crash comes at a time when both state and federal governments are considering plans that could greatly increase the number of trucks carrying volatile cargoes through towns in the Western Port area.

Gas supplier AGL has proposed a floating terminal to store LNG in Western Port while Kawasaki Heavy Industries wants to liquefy hydrogen gas at Hastings. The talks between the companies and governments come in the wake of a report by Infrastructure Victoria which recommends against building a container port at Hastings. The report states that a new container port is not needed until 2055 and that Bay West, north of Geelong in Port Phillip, would make more sense based on environmental and economic grounds. The state government has previously said it wants to increasingly use Hastings as a “bulk” port, and the latest plans for LNG and liquid hydrogen could meet those criteria. Hastings MP Neale Burgess has accused the state government of already

signing a secret deal with Kawasaki that could lead to “long coal trains or a coal slurry pipe bringing huge amounts of coal to Hastings, building of a huge coal gasification plant at Hastings and the produced hydrogen being shipped through Western Port”. The state government last week confirmed to The News it is negotiating with energy supplier AGL about using Western Port for a floating liquid natural gas terminal. The government says it can be cheaper to buy LNG from overseas even though Australia is the world’s second largest gas producer. Having gas stored on a floating terminal in Western Port would help guarantee supplies for the state. AGL has indicated it wants to bring LNG ashore in South Australia, Victoria or New South Wales – and Western Port is seen as the best place in Victoria.

“AGL propose to make a decision in mid-2017, with the Andrews Labor government [is] eager to work with AGL and the Commonwealth as this process continues,” David McNamara, senior media adviser to the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D'Ambrosio, said. “The current Victorian proposal would bring LNG in through the Port of Hastings. “AGL has discussed their proposal with the Victorian government. Discussion has included statutory approval requirements.” Mr McNamara said the state and federal governments had also been “working with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) on an engineering study into the possible production of hydrogen from Victorian brown coal”. “This project is in the very early stages and the Victorian government is

keen to explore all serious investments that have the potential to create jobs in the valley.” It is understood Kawasaki would use the existing BlueScope wharf to export liquid hydrogen initially made at a pilot plant in Hastings. The hydrogen would be extracted from brown coal trucked into Hastings from the Latrobe Valley, where the state is keen to encourage new industries following the loss of jobs from the closure of the Hazelwood power station. Kawasaki says it has been negotiating with state and federal governments for six years and has never been involved in plans to process coal at Western Port.

Art Therapy Comes to Frankston KINDRED Art Space is a quirky warehouse conversion in the heart of Frankston where the therapy begins when you walk through the door. With 6 meter high ceilings in the Gallery & Learning Centre, this large open space is encircled by beautifully furnished consulting rooms with stage 2 meditation garden, roof-top garden and Loft (stage 2 opening late 2017) and welcomes its visitors with not only bespoke local art for sale but also as a nurturing space for all to access the many services available for Mind, Body & Spirit. During this meditation she was guided, through verbal cues, to meet a messenger. Immediately, in her ‘mind’s eye’ she had a clear image of a majestic kookaburra. She was very moved by this ‘mind’s eye’ message and proceeded to google kookaburra totems and their meanings. She found a website that stated almost word for word

the message she gained from her kookaburra messenger during the meditation. Car park presents a ‘safety issue’ Stephen Taylor steve@mpnews.com.au THE proposed $280,000 car park to ease Mt Eliza Primary School drop-offs has upset nearby residents. They say their main concerns over the Canadian Bay Rd-Nepean Highway site are safety, increases in traffic when a nursing home is built opposite, and the “destruction of a beautiful park area which is characteristic of Mt Eliza”. Traffic is often chaotic in the area during morning and afternoon peaks, with parents parking on roadsides while dropping off and picking up pupils. The residents say they met with the mayor, councillors and shire staff at the proposed site recently to discuss potential issues and compromises – including establishing a new car park in Wooralla Drive. Residents Steve Traine – whose property backs onto the site – and Neil Ashby say they also speak for other Mt Eliza residents opposed to the car park. “While we respect and understand the complexities and challenges of car parking at Mt Eliza Primary School, we don’t believe a car park 250 metres away from the school on another road is the correct solution,” Mr Traine said. “It’s a terrible corner. Traffic in the morning is not as bad as in the afternoon with cars banking up Canadian Bay Rd. “Once you have a formalised car park it attracts even more traffic. If it was built a block further back it might be OK.” He said the many different views expressed on social media proved the issue was “quite controversial”. Other concerns are that landowner VicRoads could charge taxpayers $22,000 a year to lease the 2500 square metre block. Mt Eliza Primary School principal Brett Bell

Option one: The site of the proposed Mt Eliza Primary School car park. Picture: Yanni

said members of the school community had suggested the site as a viable car park to the shire and to VicRoads. He said the school had been kept informed of the progress of the planning application and had been working with shire officers to discuss a variety of “traffic management options”. “It would be a good site for a car park as it has a back gate into the school,” he said. It would require minimal vegetation removal and the school was happy to have planting days to replace any trees lost, he said. “There is currently a small gravel car park on the site; if we can get 45 cars in there that would be good.”

Dunkley MP Chris Crewther said the federal government would pay for the development of the car park which would “benefit a number of local schools, particularly in terms of child safety”. “This was a key election commitment of mine during the 2016 election campaign,” he said. The $280,000 will go to the shire to build the car park. Mr Crewther said VicRoads had earlier indicated it would charge only a penny-rent for use of the land. “However, more recently they have indicated to council they wish to charge $22,000 a year, which is now holding council back from commencing the project,” he said. “We believe this amount should not be

charged, given the project has no commercial component, but is being done for community, particularly child, safety.” Mornington MP David Morris has urged Roads Minister Luke Donnellan to push VicRoads to allow the penny-rent for the land. VicRoads metro south east director of operations Michael Barker said he was working with the shire to “reach a mutually beneficial arrangement”. Under the Victorian Government Land Transaction Policy VicRoads will estimate the value of the site and the shire will provide evidence of the value of comparable sites “for negotiation purposes”.

Partners saddle up across south east A NEW era of “cooperation” between the state government and councils across Melbourne’s suburbs has been heralded with the formation of six metropolitan partnerships by the government. The groups are “a new platform for cooperative engagement between governments, business and communities” according to Labor Suburban Development Minister Lily D’Ambrosio. A Southern Partnership representing Kingston, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Casey, Dandenong and Greater Dandenong councils appointed Dr Elizabeth Deveny as chair this month. Dr Deveny is CEO of the South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network. South East Local Learning and Employment Network CEO Andrew Simmons has been appointed deputy chair. Council CEOs will represent local government at a minimum of four meetings each year to work on a fiveyear plan to prioritise regional needs “so that all Melburnians have access to the jobs, services and local infrastructure they need”. Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO Carl Cowie will represent council at the partnership meetings. He said councillors had been briefed about the partnership in a statement provided to The News. Ms D’Ambrosio said: “Working together can only mean more opportunities for local economies and

the jobs that come with them.” The six metropolitan partnership groups are gathered under the umbrella of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. “At the induction day on 9 June, the Minister for Suburban Development, Lily D’Ambrosio, and the Special Minister for State, Gavin Jennings, expressed their thanks to all partnership members and in particular, those members of the community volunteering their time and energy for better outcomes across Melbourne’s regions,” department spokesman David McNamara said. Mr McNamara confirmed chairs, deputy chairs, council CEOs and members are not remunerated for their contribution to the partnerships. “Members are eligible to be reimbursed for reasonable travel and other expenses that they incur that are directly related to their service on their partnership.” He said there were hundreds of applicants for chair and deputy chair positions after the roles were advertised late last year. “The members offer a breadth of experience across a number of social, community and business sectors including health, education, social services, multicultural affairs, industry, small business and manufacturing.” Neil Walker

Dog walkers strain at the leash Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au DOG walkers at McCrae proved the social aspects of their regular beach outings by getting together on 10 June to pressure Mornington Peninsula into loosening the laws on keeping their pets on a leash. Bill Chalkley said unique winter restrictions at McCrae were the “bones of the issue”. “Since it was established in November 2008 the McCrae beach off-leash dog exercise area has had winter time restrictions - no off-leash exercise is permitted outside the daylight saving period after 9am or before 5pm daily,” he said.

“An identical off-leash dog exercise area east of the Rosebud jetty has no such restrictions.” Mr Chalkley said Mornington Peninsula Shire “confirms there is no data to support why the unique McCrae beach winter time restrictions exist”. He said walking dogs off-leash met council’s objective of encouraging responsible dog owners to have fun with their dogs at designated areas around the peninsula. However, weather and reduced hours of daylight during winter denied dog walkers this opportunity on the McCrae beach without contravening existing restrictions. “There have been several instances lately where infringement notices attracting significant penalties have

been served by shire rangers on unsuspecting dog walkers,” Mr Chalkley said. “Members of the McCrae beach dog walking community are responsible dog owners who enjoy both the social and health benefits of being able to walk their dogs off-leash. “They also provide a valuable community service by removing rubbish such as plastic bags, broken glass, fishing line and hooks and other items that are dangerous to marine and birds.” The dog walkers are writing to councillors and collecting signatures on a petition to have the winter offleash restrictions lifted. Seawall to ‘save’ Portsea beach Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) is about to begin designing a rock seawall to provide “long term protection” to the foreshore and beach at Portsea. The department says other works will improve access to the beach east of the seawall. The decision to replace the existing sandbag seawall with a rock seawall follows the completion of an independent options assessment by consulting firm Advisian. Cost of the project is put at $3 million, well below the $20.42m estimate for the “permanent solution” option contained in the Advisian report. “The erosion at Portsea front beach is a complex issue and I understand the concerns of local businesses and residents who value the beach,” DELWP regional director (Port Phillip) Kelly Crosthwaite said. “In reviewing other options assessed and put forward by the community, we considered the high estimated costs involved, as well as their technical uncertainty and potential impact on other parts of the coast.” As reported in The News (“Portsea beach bill $20.42m” 10/4/17) the recommended of protecting Portsea beach from erosion for the next 50 years varied $2.2 million to $32.5m. Advisian said that only two of the five options tackled the causes of erosion along 400 metres of the beach near Portsea pier. The consultants warned that doing nothing and removing rocks and sand bags laid to protect the beach will “result in the loss of some existing

foreshore buildings within 10 years”. If adopted by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) the preferred “configuration dredging” option would have cost an estimated $20.42m and taken three years to complete, including nine months of construction. “Of the options considered, only the dredged configuration and breakwater options address the primary cause of erosion at Portsea front beach,” the Advision report stated. “Groynes and sand nourishment options come with ongoing sand nourishment maintenance costs.” The five options and costings follow an earlier report in January 2016 and background notes provided by the department which acknowledged that swell waves from Bass Strait had caused Portsea’s sand loss but did not mention channel deepening in 2008-09, the biggest and most recent change to the Port Phillip seabed. Most of the beach was washed away in 2010 and the government then spent about $3 million to replace lost sand and protect the beach with sandbags and rocks. The authorities had repeatedly said the beach was destroyed by natural causes such as storms, higher sea levels and natural erosion (“Rocks for Portsea beach”, The News, 8/8/13). A Water Technologies’ report stated channel deepening had created channels that allowed larger, more powerful waves to sweep into the beach. The options assessment is available at https:// www.coastsandmarine.vic.gov.au/coastal-programs/portsea

Come on in: YMCA Winter Solstice Swimmers take the plunge – just for fun. Picture: supplied.

Taking the ‘shortest’ dip TAKING the plunge into the chilly waters off Mornington last week was a brave group taking part in the inaugural YMCA Winter Solstice Swim. The event – on the winter solstice: Wednesday 21 June – aimed to encourage people to stay active in the great outdoors and to have a bit of fun celebrating the shortest day of the year. The good news is that from now until the summer solstice on 21 December the days will be getting longer. Some swimmers dressed in costumes and spectators watched as Super Woman, a Minion

and SpongeBob square pants took the plunge. “It was a refreshing experience: once you got over the initial shock it was a heap of fun, I even went back for a second dip,” swimmer Kim Evans said. To defrost afterwards, YMCA Camp Manyung provided hot chocolate and a barbecue for all participants. This was the first of many community and family outdoor adventure events scheduled for the year at Camp Manyung. Check out the calendar of events on the website or see the YMCA camp’s Facebook page.

Shire falls short when it comes to festival support It is disappointing, yet unsurprising, to hear Mornington Peninsula Shire plans to give $141,000 for Australia Day in Mornington (“Two sides, but different coin for towns” The News 13/6/17). All the towns in the Cerberus, Watson and Red Hill wards (about 25-30 per cent of the shire’s population) only receive $10,000 (3.31 per cent of the $302,000 allocated to Australia Day celebrations). The shire’s inequality for other events is also on display, such as the Western Port Festival. As the only major volunteer run, annual, multi-day, free entry event on the peninsula, it is disheartening to see the efforts of the festival’s volunteers and supporting community groups deemed second rate when it comes to financial support from the shire. Our entire three-day event ran on less than $75,000 this financial year, yet the shire has seen fit to present Mornington with a $141,000 cheque for a one-day celebration. In this coming financial year, the shire will increase funding for Australia Day by $24,000, which is significantly more than the entire $19,000 contribution it made to the Western Port Festival. The festival has not received any extra money since before 2013; other events seem to receive funding boosts on request. The Mornington Peninsula Short Film Festival this year received $5000 extra from the shire (totalling $40,000), despite the fact it has fewer attendees than the Western Port Festival and is supported by the federal and state governments through Screen Australia and Visit Victoria. The festival has been transformed over the past 12 months in order to raise money, such as holding a community market on the third Saturday of every month at Hastings Hall. Rather than supporting our volunteers and promoting market on its website, the shire is charging us for using the hall for the market. Chris Fisher, treasurer Western Port Festival

Inhuman penalty It is quite unbelievable that with the increase in home invasion, theft and street mugging, offenders often get away with a slap over the wrist and excuses made as to why they acted in such a manner. However, the Mornington Peninsula Shire seems to justify fining an elderly pensioner $200 for having his dog off lead on the beach in the McCrae area. This gentleman was minding his own business on an almost deserted beach, enjoying the simple pleasure of walking his pet along our beautiful foreshore, to the benefit of both man and dog. The shire has unnecessarily penalised one of the members of the community with complete disregard to the fact that owning a pet is of a great benefit to both young and old. These animals provide their owners with love, company, a reason to exercise and socialise. Pets also teach children to be responsible and caring. The shire shows it is dead set against dogs by

amount of money to create real jobs. Come on Australia we can and must do better for our future survival on our endangered planet. Also it is interesting to note that the two bodies directly involved in deciding whether Adani will get the $1 billion of taxpayers’ funds have boards that in my opinion are absolutely stacked with coal interests. They are the Northern Australian Infrastructure Fund and The Export Finance and Insurance Commission. Denise Hassett, Mt Martha

Blocked views

Mad about Finkel

It is good to see that the path from the visitor centre to the main camp area at Sullivan Bay, Sorrento, is under construction, although I note the contribution from the developer to make the path will only meet one third of the cost. I also note when trying to view the main camp area from the viewing platform on the Eastern Sister the property development on the top of the Sisters basically blocks the view of the main camp area. Keith Murley, Blairgowrie

Rupert Steiner(“Abbott block to change” Letters 20/6/17) suggests that [former prime minister] Tony Abbott is aiding our energy and climate troubles. These so-called troubles are a direct result of the boneheaded renewable energy policies as promoted in the Finkel report. The only certainty that comes from the report is that we are certainly mad. Australia has hundreds of years’ worth of black coal, brown coal, gas and uranium. Instead of maximising the use of these thermal fuels to our advantage, we are shipping them off to other nations to burn, emit and prosper from. Meanwhile, we wring our hands with guilt and punish consumers and business with costly and unreliable energy. Of course the Finkel report didn’t mention what our sacrifice will do to global temperatures, that is, what gain do we get for this pain? The reason this is not mentioned is because any temperature change will be immeasurable. With Australia’s share of global emissions a paltry 1.4 per cent a year it is easy to see that what we do doesn’t matter. Even if the world was to cut emissions in half you wouldn’t notice the difference. Signing up to the Paris Accord and high renewable energy targets are just an exercise in virtue so that Australian politicians can strut around the United Nations and beat their chests. To think that other nations will be inspired to act by Australia’s stance is delirious. Chris Spillane, Blairgowrie

Tracking Penbus I believe there are half truths and misrepresentations in the letter “Backtracking bus” (The News 6/6/17) which need clarification. The former federal Labor government did indeed provide a one-off grant of $1.26 million for a two-year Penbus trial in 2013, however there was never any ongoing federal funding contemplated. Ministerial briefing documents, obtained through FoI, clearly show the state government had developed options for funding a replacement service in 2015 when the relevant minister knew this funding was expected to expire. State governments operate bus services and, if successful, this trial was to be no different. There were no “cuts” as Esther Gleixner asserts, the grant funding for the trial simply ran out as expected, and as planned by the state government. Labor MPs, party hacks and their local minions have simply preferred to play politics instead of doing their jobs and supporting our vulnerable students from day one. It was only after significant agitation from Nepean MP Martin Dixon, Mornington Peninsula Shire, students and their families that the full service was recently restored – for that we are grateful. It is interesting to note how unfairly contemptuous of Mr Dixon’s efforts is Ms Gleixner - but when were Labor acolytes fair about anything? Peter Grey, Rye

Finkel ‘elephant’ While the Finkel report is far from perfect, it is pleasing to hear this past week positive noises coming from the government and opposition. The elephant in the room surely is new coal mines. The $1 billion loan from the federal government to what I see as a highly disreputable company, Adani, whose environmental record in Africa, is appalling. We don’t need another coal mine. This proposed Adani mine could do untold damage to the Great Barrier Reef. Jobs supposedly gained by this new mine will be lost by the tourism industry if the destruction of the reef happens. Just think what else could be done with that

Night of good turns Kindness to others is alive and well and the age of chivalry is not dead. My car broke down while I was driving home from Rosebud to Safety Beach at 5.30pm on Tuesday 13 June at 5.30pm. I was at the intersection of the freeway and Nepean Highway, one kilometre from home. While sitting in my car with my hazard lights on wondering what I should do a series of events occurred. 1 A very nice lady pulled up and asked if she could help. I thanked her and said I would ring the RACV. After she left I looked for my phone only to realise that I had left it at home. 2 A young girl pulled up and asked if I needed help. So I explained the problem and she called the RACV and very kindly said she would wait with me. 3 A car then pulled up and a gentleman offered to push my car off the road. As he only lived a few houses away he went to get someone to help push. He returned with two very nice ladies and with their help he pushed my car onto the grass verge. By this time I discovered his name was Glen and he came to check on me several times and he bought me a nice hot coffee.

Forget, no regret You’ve lost your glasses, looked everywhere, cannot find; items so important you have two of them. Do not waste your time searching, get the second pair. You either find them without thinking or suddenly you will remember where you put them, or they will appear on your bed or your kitchen bench, unobtrusive, hiding. I lost my favourite cap; checked all my visits; nothing forthcoming. Weeks later I put my second favourite cap on top of the printer; accidentally knocked and it fell down the side. I retrieved it, thought about it, wondered? Bingo! Save your memory buds and worry for the big things, big visuals, like walking into the kitchen and wondering why; spotting the coffee jar and more bingo; make your coffee. Also, have a read of the obituaries in newspaper, particularly those born before 1930. Feel better now? Cliff Ellen, Rye

Tourist turn-off Australians are entitled to be angry and disgusted by reports that tourists in Bali are routinely being fed dog meat. Dogs are not on the menu in Australia, and the Bali dogs, according to eyewitnesses, suffer appallingly cruel deaths before being eaten, often sold falsely as chicken satays. Many are poisoned, adding further risk to the unwitting consumer. But before demanding that your satays come from another animal, spare a thought for the billions of chickens killed just as inhumanely every year. These chickens endure miserable lives in filthy, overcrowded factory farms and probably never see the sun or take a breath of fresh air until they are put onto trucks and sent to slaughter. Chickens are genetically bred to grow so large and so fast that their legs, lungs, and hearts often can’t keep up—their upper bodies grow six to seven times faster than they would naturally. When the chickens are about seven weeks old, still infants, they are thrown into crates to be loaded onto the transport trucks. Many suffer from broken wings and legs. After they are unloaded, these chickens are hung, still fully conscious, upside-down by their often broken legs in metal shackles before their heads are passed through electrically charged water that immobilises them but does not render them unconscious. Unless they have died from stress and abuse before they’re shackled, these animals are still alive when their throats are slit, and die slowly of blood loss. The only safe way to ensure you are not eating dog satays is to request tasty, nutritious vegan food. Each vegan saves more than 100 animals a year, so not only will you be looking after your health, but that of hundreds of other sentient animals. 4 The RACV man arrived found a burst radiator hose which had caused the car to overheat so it had to be towed. Meanwhile, Glen had come back to see what was going on and then drove me home. I would like to thank all of these very kind, thoughtful people for being so caring to an 87-year-old woman who appreciated their kindness. Marj Burridge, Safety Beach

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Honest boys hand in their Frankston “find” Compiled by Cameron McCullough ON Monday last three schoolboys (James and Cyril Hodgkinson and William Walker) when crossing the railway line, near the local goods sheds, at Frankston, found a purse containing a diamond ring and 16s 7d in cash. The boys at once proceeded to the police station and handed their “find” over to Constable Ryan. Later on in the day, Mr Thomas, a local railway employee, reported the loss of his purse and contents, and received his property back intact. Mr Thomas stated his intention of rewarding the boys for their commendable honesty. *** TROOPER C. Paynter, who was in Frankston on Military Police duty for some time, sailed for France last week. *** THE sad news was wired to Mr Mark Brody, on Wednesday, that his son, Private A. C. Brody was missing. Further news is awaited with anxiety. *** ALL helpers in these entertainments are reminded that the “Wattle” Club are entertaining 100 returned wounded soldiers on Saturday, June 7th. *** MEMBERS and friends of the National Federation are requested to meet at the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall on Wednesday evening next, at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of meeting an officer of the Federation, and transact business of the Branch. *** DEPOSITORS in the State Savings Bank are reminded by advertisement

that the Inspector (Mr W. J. Masters) will be in attendance at the Bank on Monday 2nd July for the annual inspection of pass-books It is particularly desired that depositors should produce their pass books at this time. *** IN the election of officers of the newly formed Victorian Police Association which has a membership of 1180, Constable E. C. Ryan, stationed at Frankston, was elected on the committee, securing 452 votes and heading the poll. *** A GENERAL meeting of the Somerville Fruitgrowers will be held on Monday evening next, when the following business will be transacted: - Election of trustee for Show Ground; report of delegates re fruit poll etc, and paper by Mr Twyford on vagaries of fruit market. *** THE following office bearers were appointed at the annual meeting of the Tyabb Red Cross Society - President, Mrs G. Denham; Vice-presidents, Mesdames Steer and Woodhouse; hon secretary and treasurer, Mrs E. P. Mair; assistant secretary, Miss M. Houfe; and a committee of 12. *** A PUBLIC meeting was held in the Frankston Hall on Wednesday evening under the auspices of the State Recruiting Committee of Victoria for the purpose of getting any to enlist who had not yet done so. There was a good attendance but very few eligibles, as there are really few young men left in the Frankston district.

Owing to the indisposition of Cr Watt, president of the Shire (who was present), Cr Oates occupied the chair. A good picture show, depicting a soldier’s life in the A.I.F. was given, after which Sergeant Caffrey (a returned soldier) gave a stirring address, and vividly depicted the urgent need there was for more men. At the close of his address one local stepped forward and gave in his name. A collection was taken up to defray expenses and £2 5s was realised. *** THE annual meeting of the “Wattle” Club will be held in the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall, on Monday evening, July 9th. All members and intending members are expected to attend. The annual plain and fancy dress Ball is also advertised to take place on Wednesday, July 25th. This event will bring the second year of the “Wattle” Club to a close and it is the intention of the members to work up something unusual to celebrate the occasion. Di Gilio’s band has already been secured and the valuable prizes offered should induce everyone to compete. *** MR A. K. Lasslett, the manager appointed to the Frankston branch of the State Savings Bank in place of Mr C. P. Watson, who has been promoted to Sale, took up his duties here last week. For the last three years Mr Lasslett has been stationed at Inglewood, and from a lengthy report of a farewell given him previous to his departure, (reported by the Inglewood “Advertiser”) it appears that the residents of that town regretted his departure very much, as he had taken an active part in the social life as well as being a

courteous and obliging, officer of the bank. As secretary of the Progress Association in that town, he made it a live institution, and of considerable benefit to the place. We welcome Mr and Mrs Lasslett to Frankston, and hope that their stay here will be a pleasant one. *** Golden Wedding A VERY successful entertainment was given by the family of Mr and Mrs T. M. Gould, on 19th June, 1917, at “Glenburnie”, Nolan Street, Frankston, to honour the celebration of their parents golden wedding. The Rev B. Tonkin (Methodist) presided. There was a splendid spread prepared, and many guests were present. The chairman gave a most felicitous toast in honor of the bride and bridegroom of 50 years ago, and all were asked to clink their glasses and drink to their health, wishing them prosperity, and hoping to be able to celebrate their diamond wedding. All then sang, “They are jolly good fellows,” and three cheers were given. A most hearty response was given by Mr Martin Gould, on behalf of the father, thanking the chairman for his kindly speech, and all others who were present. A most touching and sincere speech was given by Mr M. H. Jackson (sonin-law) on behalf of the children. He was proud to be able to speak on such an occasion, and his experience was that the children were most loving and self sacrificing. Mr Frederick Gould (youngest son) responded in a most manly and hearty manner, thanking the speaker for his

kindly remarks. There was a general heartfelt sympathy amongst those present for the absent ones, of which Mr Martin Gould spoke briefly of their absence through sickness. Mr De Salanne then gave a warm and hearty speech on behalf of the ladies, which was greatly appreciated. Mr F. Gould proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman. A very enjoyable evening was spent in music and singing by the children and grandchildren. All expressed the opinion that a jolly good time had been spent. There were many gifts and cheques sent to the happy old couple from all parts. *** TO THE EDITOR. In reply to “Tank” I would say that 99 per cent of the residents have quite a different opinion of Const Ryan. He is anything but asleep. Re motor cars tearing through the town at the rate of 20 or 30 miles an hour, I can safely state that “Tank” is wrong, there is no by law. As for the geese which may or may not be a nuisance, there is still no by law under which he could act. As to vehicles without lights - how many does “Tank” come across in a month. Const Ryan has been here now 9 months, and during that time he has secured more convictions than the other constables have in 7 years. J. REYNOLDS, *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 30 June 1917

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES

Come In Fidget Spinner By Stuart McCullough I HAVE no idea. I don’t know what purpose they serve and I find their popularity a source of continuing bafflement. Others can resort to extreme measures to secure the last of what appears to be a finite resource, but I won’t be among those clenching their fists and pleading to the gods to intervene. No sir, not me. For I have heard this particular tune one too many times before and I know better than to give my heart and soul to some craze that will last about as long as a litre of milk left in the sun. The world may well be in love with ‘fidget spinners’ but I remain immune. I feel for the kids, though. That deep-seeded and burning need to have something that everyone else already has but that your stingy parents have not seen fit to bestow upon you; it’s something you carry right through to adulthood. To this day, I struggle to understand how it is that those who – allegedly – were responsible for my welfare, did not feel the same sense of urgency to purchase a yo-yo from Brammell’s Milk Bar that I did. For reasons that I still consider utterly unfathomable, they prioritized other things such as health, education, food and clothing above yo-yos. How misguided. When a person raises a subject with you four hundred times a day, you’re likely to go either one of two ways. Either you’ll knuckle down and resist, even if it gets to the point that it’s sheer lunacy to do so, or you’ll eventually fold like a load of washing.

Picture: David Hawkins

When it came to Donkey Kong, my parents dug in. Hard. Given that my father referred to TV as ‘chewing gum for the eyes’, he doubtless considered hand held video games to be ‘crack for the soul’. Hell would sooner freeze over than he would cough up his hard earned for Donkey Kong. He’d probably say it was for the best. I, on the other hand, believe it severely impeded my development. I was reduced to begging for a turn from someone else’s game. It was an act of shame. It quickly emerged that there was a pecking order – even when it came to begging - and I was some considerable distance from the top. Play lunch only lasts for so many minutes and demand greatly outstripped supply. It has left me unprepared. To this day, if I step into the street and

find a whole bunch of barrels being rolled in my direction by a monkey, I’ll have no idea what to do. Even when they did eventually capitulate to my unrelenting demands, there was always the risk they might get it ever so slightly wrong. For example, instead of getting Donkey Kong you might end up with something that almost looks like Asteroids but isn’t and where all the instructions are in another language. I suspect my father reasoned that these were life skills I was more likely to use, given that the chances of being invaded by a life form from another planet are probably slightly higher than having barrels hurled at you by an angry primate. Already, I’ve noticed some of the local shops are advertising ‘Finger Spinners’. How I wish that this was a mere

typographical error, but I suspect that darker forces are at play. ‘Finger Spinners’ are probably a lot like ‘Fidget Spinners’ except that they’re not and, frankly, you might as well turn up to school with a wet fish to play with at lunchtime, for all the good a ‘Finger Spinner’ will do you. Like everyone else, I desperately wanted a ‘Rubik’s Cube’, and an inferior knock off was always going to fail to scratch that seemingly insatiable itch. Suffice to say, no one wants to be seen with ‘Rudy’s Cube’ at school, much less the dodecahedron-shaped perversion that I got saddled with. Sometimes getting it wrong is a finely balanced thing; where the difference between the soul-nourishing warmth of conformity and the desert-island isolation of being ever so

slightly different is a hair’s breadth. Speaking directly from personal experience, it’s a tough day when you arrive with your new Fanta yo-yo to discover that everyone else has opted for Coke. I think it’s the shame of having your colours suddenly nailed to the mast and revealed as unforgivably different. Even though I secretly adored Fanta (a passion I maintain to this day), I still wasn’t ready to be seen with it in public. Fads, of course, come and go, but social stigma is forever. I don’t want to add to the pressure that is almost certainly building at your place, but people should take care when selecting their ‘Fidget Spinners’. Speaking from personal experience, you really don’t want to get it wrong. Sure, they’re probably a colossal waste of time, money and emotional resources, but they represent so much more. They represent inclusion of a uniquely cruel, unforgiving and savage kind. So you’ll excuse me if I sit this one out. I’ve been burned before. If you think that makes me some kind of social pariah, I can only say that it’s not the first time such an accusation has been hurled in my general direction. But I’ll be okay. I intend to lock the door and stay inside for a while, entertaining myself with my Fanta yo-yo, ten-sided Cube and hand held Asteroids game that isn’t quite Asteroids. For when it comes to Fidget Spinners, it will all be over soon enough. stuart@stuartmccullough.com

scoreboard Bonbeach stand alone at the top PENINSULA LEAGUE

By Toe Punt BONBEACH stands alone at the top of the MPNFL Peninsula Division ladder after handing out a 12 goal hiding to Langwarrin. The Sharks have been in sensational form in the past eight weeks and have knocked over both of the 2016 grand finalists, YCW and Mt Eliza. There is no question that the race for the 2017 title is well and truly on. Edithvale-Aspendale has now emerged as a genuine contender too after leading all day to beat Frankston YCW. The sixth-placed Eagles are on six wins, locked together with Mt Eliza, who currently hold down fifth place after a solid victory against Chelsea. It’s important to put into context that Bonbeach, despite being a game clear at the top, has played one additional game, having played Chelsea on the Queen’s Birthday weekend when all

other teams had a bye. Regardless, they are a game clear at the top. On Saturday, the two-pronged Bonbeach forward line of Trent DennisLane and reigning league medallist Shane McDonald booted seven and four goals respectively between them. Darcy James was also superb for the Sharks with a couple of goals and Jackson Sole and Gary Carpenter are two players that just don’t play a bad game. Young key defender Mitch Cuthbert continues to improve for the Kangas and the silky Michael Parker was at his best. Edithvale-Aspendale booted five goals to two in the final quarter to record an outstanding 28 point victory over the reigning premiers. Just four points separated the sides at half time and it was just nine at three quarter time. Michael Meehan was at his best for the Eagles with six goals while ruck-

man Chris Wylie was dominant. Anthony Barry was front and centre for the Stonecats again while Kyle Hutchison was also good. Aaron Walton booted four goals and Rourke Fischer was dominant for Seaford in their 12.14 (86) to 9.9 (63) victory over Karingal. Mt Eliza was able to turn the tables from earlier in the season, dominating across three quarters to beat Chelsea. The Redlegs booted seven behinds in the first quarter before booting six of the next seven goals to record 11.16 (82) to 8.4 (52). Justin Van Unen booted four goals and Shane Tennant three while Darren Booth was back to his best. Simon Mitchelhill was the best of the Gulls. In the final game, Pines overcame a slow start to beat Mornington comfortably. The Pythons kicked 15 goals to five after quarter time.

Sharks send Bombers crashing down NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt SORRENTO coach Nick Jewell has scoffed at suggestions that the competitive nature of the 2017 Nepean Division season was over after his side handed out an almost 100-point thrashing to Frankston Bombers on Saturday. Frankston Bombers came into the game ranked second on the ladder, only behind Sorrento, however the home team made the opposition look as though they were miles off the pace as they proceeded to belt them. The one-sided demolition prompted keyboard warriors around the peninsula to declare the season was finished. One person listening to the match on RPP FM sent through an SMS message suggesting we “pack up the commentary gear and head home”. “Why don’t we just declare Sorrento as 2017 premiers,” the SMSer sent through. “With four ex-AFL players and one from the SANFL, plus a list of talent an arm long, it was always going to be a case of Sorrento buys another flag,” the SMS read. The SMS went on to claim that commentators and journalists were bias towards Sorrento. Unfortunately, some people have very short memories. The doomsayers might not remember but I certainly recall writing stories trying to help save the Sharks when they were getting belted by 40 goals every week 20 years ago. As a result of some good, staunch club people, together with some passionate local business people and a committed group of young talent that went the journey, they have been able to turn the club around. And Nick Jewell won’t have a bar of his side going on its merry way and just claiming the 2017 premiership. “I understand the hype and people are always going to poke the stick at Sorrento, I get that,” Nick said. “It was a wonderful day for our club yesterday. We had 180 at our luncheon, we had all our past players here for the game and we won in all three grades.

PAGE 50

Picture: Andrew Hurst

“None of this was handed to us on a platter though. People don’t understand what happened in the past to get us to this point and what goes into doing what we do each week. There’s a lot of wonderful people that put in great amounts of work to ensure that we remain competitive. “People have also got to remember that we didn’t even make the finals last season. “On Saturday, we came up against a team that played in a grand final last season and was touted as the premiership favourites. We had an opportunity to prove ourselves.

Mornington News 27 June 2017

“They kicked the first three goals of the game inside the first six minutes of the match. We kicked the next 10. “We went on to win the match with eight local kids under the age of 20 and 17 one point players. People remember the names Dawes and Tapscott but they don’t think of Harris, Byrns, Gladman, Tomkins, Holt, etc. “The season is a long one. We won a Round 10 game by 90-odd points. It was a good day. We only need a couple of injuries to some prime movers and things change dramatically. “There’s a long way to go and I wouldn’t be handing anyone a pre-

miership cup in round 10,” Jewell said. It was a horror day for Frankston, beaten 27.10 (172) to 11.9 (75). Three players were sent from the field by umpires in the space of two minutes in the second quarter. Nathan Lonie was red carded for striking Leigh Treeby and his case was sent to the tribunal. Ruckman Ryan Kitchen took two weeks for headbutting Chris Dawes and Corey Micari was yellow carded also for striking. James Hallahan was sensational out of the middle with five goals for the Sharks while Zac Longham was at his

best for Frankston with four goals. Red Hill bounced back and had a strong second half against a gutsy Devon Meadows, winning 12.9 (81) to 5.9 (39). It was typical Red Hill, strong in defence until opening up in the last. Jono Ross booted four and Marcus Dal Lago was superb for the Hillmen. In other matches, Dromana made it five wins in a row with a 45 point victory over Rye, Rosebud bounced back to beat Pearcedale by 79 points and Somerville played four strong quarters of footy to beat Crib Point by 53 points.

Theodore in the nick of time for Skye SOCCER

By Craig MacKenzie NICK Theodore has an impeccable sense of timing. With Skye United’s promotion push under serious threat from bottom side Dingley Stars, Theodore came off the bench in the 78th minute and scored twice in the final six minutes of normal time to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Skye’s 4-3 come-from-behind win at home on Saturday gives it hope that it can beat Brandon Park in the race for second spot in State 3 SouthEast but it will have to perform at a far higher standard to achieve its aim. Skye dominated in the air against Dingley but looked susceptible on the ground when the visitors counterattacked quickly. Skye’s aerial threat was ever present from set pieces and was powered by Daniel Attard, Marcus Collier and defenders Johnny Andrinopoulos and Billy Painting all keen to get on the end of free-kicks or corners taken by either Irish captain Mark O’Connor or English import Jacob Scotte-Hatherly. But when Dingley broke forward Sergen Aycicek and Hakan Yildiz were a constant handful. The number 13 is unlucky for some and so it was when Dingley took the lead in the 13th minute thanks to a Painting blunder. The big man didn’t put enough weight on his attempt to head the ball back to the advancing Jonathan Crook and Aycicek nipped in to poke the ball over the stranded keeper and into the unguarded goal. But Crook made a crucial save in the 19th minute to thwart a lightningquick Dingley counter-attack. Aycicek squared the ball to Erman Sepetci on the right and his stinging strike was superbly parried by Crook. Five minutes later a neat turn and volley by Yildiz saw the ball flash just wide of the far post as Dingley continued to look the better side. The lifeline Skye needed arrived in the 28th minute courtesy of an inch-perfect long ball from the left by David Cori which Jason Nowakowski headed over Dingley keeper Nicholas Abougelis for the equaliser. Five minutes later Skye was in front following a corner headed home by Andrinopoulos at the back post. Attard should have extended Skye’s lead in the 37th minute when Nowakowski lobbed the ball across goal from the right to the unmarked Skye striker who headed wide. A minute later it was 2-2 and Skye had again been exposed on the break. Crook was off his line to block a

close range shot and the rebound fell to Aycicek whose strike found the back of the net via Painting’s lastditch effort to slide down and clear. Collier should have hit the target in the 43rd minute with a header but sent the ball over the bar and that was the last significant chance of the half. One minute into the second half Attard sent Nowakowski through but he shot wide. In the 60th minute Skye gave Dingley some of its own medicine with a quick break that saw Wumjock Jock send Attard through but the lanky forward didn’t connect with his shot cleanly and Abougelis saved easily. Few onlookers could have anticipated three goals in the final 10 minutes of normal time and a grandstand finish that brought Skye fans to their feet. Theodore had replaced Sajnesh Sugrim as Skye coach Billy Armour

rolled the dice and pushed an extra man forward but that move looked to have backfired in spectacular fashion after Sugrim’s opponent Sepetci broke on the right and struck a firm shot across Crook and inside the far post in the 80th minute to make it 3-2. Someone needed to grab the bull by the horns and that man was Theodore. In the 84th minute a clever O’Connor free kick sent the ball in behind the Dingley defence and Theodore stuck out a foot and directed its past Abougelis from close range for the leveller. In the 90th minute the spotlight again fell on the supersub as Jock motored down the left with Dingley desperately hanging on for a point. Jock’s cross was put on a plate for Theodore who headed the ball inside the near post to break Dingley’s heart and give Skye all three points.

While Dingley deserved to get something out of a contest to which it contributed so much Skye deserves credit for never giving up and forcing its way back into the match. A better insight into Skye’s 2017 prospects will be gained shortly when it comes up against Brighton twice in five days. The sides meet at Dendy Park on Saturday then their abandoned fixture from earlier in the season is replayed at Skye Recreation Reserve on Wednesday 5 July at 7.30pm. The original fixture was called off due to a storm with Brighton good value for its 2-0 lead so Skye knows that it faces a serious challenge. Normal service was resumed in State 1 South-East when league leader Langwarrin and two-time champion Mornington both won on Saturday. Langy travelled to Gippsland to take on Morwell Pegasus and went 4-0 up early in the second half with goals to Caleb Nicholes (21st and 55th minutes), Connor Belger (31st) and Paul Speed (44th) but a flurry of late goals by the home side and some controversial refereeing had Langy looking to the heavens when the final whistle blew. The man who almost turned this contest around was big Paul Kuol who notched a hat-trick with goals in the 77th, 80th and 90th minutes, the last two from the penalty spot. Mornington beat St Kilda 3-0 at Elwood Park with goals from Wayne Gordon (12th) and recent recruit Sam Orritt (35th, 74th). Stalwart defender Simon Webster had announced his retirement the previous week due to ongoing injury problems and the only downside to emerge from the St Kilda win was a hamstring injury to English midfielder Matthew Wade. There was no good news to emerge from State 2 South-East last weekend with Peninsula Strikers, Frankston Pines and Seaford United all losing. Strikers hit the front away to Berwick City with a Raphael Stulz goal but four minutes later Orlando Mejias equalised and Bryce Ziada nabbed the winner for Berwick in the 78th minute. Pines went down 1-0 away to league leader Eltham Redbacks due to a Mili Muratbegovic goal in the 71st minute while Seaford lost 1-0 to Heatherton United thanks to Meldin Klehic who toe-poked the ball home in the 65th minute. An own goal in the 35th minute of Baxter’s away clash with Noble Park gave Roy Kilner’s men a 2-1 win that entrenches them in the logjam at the top of State 4 South.

On 13 minutes Baxter had the goal its early dominance deserved, Mark Pagliarulo bringing down a high ball before having his close range shot saved by the home team keeper but Liam Kilner was on hand to tuck in the rebound. Baxter increased its lead after a quick free kick from Kilner set up Dan Disseldorp who unleashed a low drive which was deflected into the net. Pagliarulo missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 3-0 early in the second half and Noble Park looked the more likely side to score going close with a shot that rattled the crossbar. The home side eventually broke through with a stunning 25-metre strike from Timothy Van Den Heuvel in the 76th minute that gave Baxter keeper Francis Beck no chance. Baxter is now equal top on 26 points along with Springvale City, Monash Uni, Dandenong South and Bayside Argonauts with Harrisfield Hurricanes in sixth spot just four points off the pace. Rival State 4 South outfit Rosebud Heart was beaten 4-1 at home by Endeavour United on Saturday. Heart never recovered from a slow start that saw goals from Dario Maia in the 5th and 20 minutes having Heart on the ropes before Blake Hicks make it 2-1 in the 26th minute. Ahmad Tabbara restored Endeavour’s two-goal cushion just before half-time and substitute Michael Rodriguez rounded off the scoreline in the 82nd minute. Somerville Eagles made it back-toback league wins for the first time in its short history by downing Drouin Dragons 1-0 in their State 5 South fixture at Barber Reserve on Saturday. Irish recruit Ciaran McConville was the main man with a successful free kick in the 35th minute. Somerville celebrated another milestone as the reserves and seniors both won on the same day for the first time. This weekend’s games: SATURDAY 3pm: Langwarrin v South Springvale (Lawton Park), Manningham Utd Blues v Mornington (Park Avenue Reserve), Peninsula Strikers v Doncaster Rovers (Centenary Park), Frankston Pines v Berwick City (Monterey Reserve), Seaford Utd v Doveton (North Seaford Reserve), Brighton v Skye Utd (Dendy Park), Baxter v Bayside Argonauts (Baxter Park), Rosebud Heart v Noble Park (Truemans Road Recreation Reserve), Somerville Eagles v Casey Panthers (Barber Reserve).

Clubs slam AFL South East By Toe Punt FRANKTON Bombers, Rosebud and Sorrento Football Clubs have slammed AFL South East, claiming that the competition review process is “flawed, superficial and has not been undertaken in the best interests of the MPNFL collective”. Following a meeting last Monday night (July 19) where 20 of the 22 MPNFL Clubs attended (Pines was not present and Tyabb was an apology), a letter was penned to AFL South East on Friday by club’s representative, Rosebud president, Lachy White. The letter was presented to AFL South East on behalf of 18 of the 22 MPNFL Clubs, declaring that every club in attendance at the meeting indicated by show of hands that they opposed and rejected both Option 1 and Option 2 as outlined in the review and that an alternative structure that resulted in an integration between the MPNFL and South East Football Netball League (SENFL). Of the four clubs that were not part of the official response, Langwarrin presented their own submission, Edithvale wanted to meet as a committee before responding, Pines was still determining its position and its understood Tyabb supports the recommendations. AFL South East, despite making it publicly clear on a number of occasions that it would not make any further comment until after the July 3 deadline, released a ‘memo’ to clubs on Friday morning conceding that

Steering the restructure: AFL South East’s John Anderson. Picture:

Linkedin there have been “a lot of debate across the network” since the recommendations were handed down three weeks ago. “The Commission encourages healthy debate and has been happy to engage with clubs, supporters, volunteers, coaches and players both in a formal and informal capacity,” AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said. “In the body of the draft recommendations, there was a page summarising the findings of the one on one club consultation. Those findings ultimately formed the structure and the basis for the draft recommendations paper,” Anderson wrote.

MAKE YOURS A

Those findings included: • 7 Peninsula League clubs favoured a full divisional structure • 3 Peninsula League clubs favoured divisional structure only with Nepean League clubs • 2 Nepean League clubs favoured a full divisional structure • 5 Nepean League clubs would support a divisional structure but only with Peninsula League clubs It is these findings that Frankton Bombers, Rosebud and Sorrento Football Clubs have publicly slammed. In an email accompanying the official MPNFL response, Rosebud Football Club secretary Anthony Matthews stated that the review had not

been undertaken in the best interests of the MPNFL collective and has been severely compromised by what we believe has clearly been a predetermined agenda set by AFL South East before the review process had even commenced. At no stage has AFL South East brought together all 31 clubs to discuss the recommendations collectively. Nor have they brought together the MPNFL 22 Clubs to discuss the situation. Again, it has been a case of divide and conquer. One club president told MP News that he spent three and a half minutes talking about league structures some months ago. Not one club spoken to believes they ‘formally’ spoke with AFL South East regarding the competition structure or review. So how do we possibly believe or take seriously the ‘findings’ of AFL South East through the informal fact finding mission at the beginning of the season. John Anderson wrote himself to the clubs “the confidentiality of each individual club’s feedback is to be maintained and respected”. Did AFL South East simply hear what they wanted to hear and present it as fact? Did the clubs really say this in their ‘informal’ discussions? By show of hands at the meeting a fortnight ago, it was very clear to everyone in the room what the thoughts were of 20 of the 22 clubs present. It certainly didn’t reflect AFL South East’s findings. Clubs were also concerned that the

AFL South East memo directed clubs to respond via an online survey. Anderson wrote; “it is of vital importance to note that all clubs have the chance to respond to the online survey. This formal response process will be the only consideration in the Commission’s decision-making process and we thank the number of clubs who have already completed this. “While the Commission seeks clubs feedback on their preference between the 2 options, the online portal does provide the opportunity for clubs to provide further feedback and commentary in the designated boxes which the Commission will then consider,” Anderson wrote. Matthews, speaking on behalf of a number of clubs, advised AFL South East “that we completely reject the direction that the online survey is the formal response process and is the only consideration in the Commission’s decision-making process. “In particular, it is inappropriate that the online survey compels clubs to select which of Option 1 or Option 2 we prefer, when in fact we entirely reject both options,” Mathews said. “It is this type of direction and correspondence from AFL South East that clearly demonstrates that they had a predetermined agenda before the review process had even started. “The show of hands of 20 of the 22 MPNFL Clubs clearly demonstrates that we are not prepared to put up with it,” Matthews said.
