Delmar Sports Scene By Tommy Young Last week was the kind of week that drives coaches crazy as the Wildcat teams played good, bad, and indifferent. First, the baseball team traveled down to Princess Anne and shut out Washington High 21-0 as Matt Campbell was 4 for 6, Taylor Ballard went 3 for 6 as did Trey Alexander to lead Delmar’s offense while Kevin Johnson and David Pollitt combined to pitch the 4 hit shutout. Then, they came home on Tuesday and dropped a 7-3 decision to Indian River in a game that should have been a whole lot closer and possibly a win if Delmar had not left so many men on base. For example, in the second inning, the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs and had the top of the batting order coming up with the score tied 2-2 and did not score a run. In my opinion, this was the turning point of the ball game because everything went down hill from then on. It must have carried over to Thursday as they traveled up to Smyrna and an eyewitness said they played like a lot of Little Leaguers, as they were beaten 85. As far as the softball team, it was even worse because after coming from behind 4-1, they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat a good Indian River team 5-4 as Lauren Ellis “took one for the team” as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run. But on Thursday, they must have had “the Prom” on their minds as they played very poorly up at Smyrna and lost 8-2. It did not get much better for the soccer team as their game with Sussex Tech wound up in a 1-1 tie, but they lost the game 4-1 in overtime. I can understand why Coach Budd was so upset as they held the opponents to one goal in a regulation game and let them score 3 times in one period. It just had to have been a “Prom Thing.” Anyway, the baseball and softball regular season comes to an end this week with the baseball team playing three games which will probably decide whether it makes the playoffs or not, so let’s hope for good weather. Meanwhile, the girls’ soccer team will also be closing out their regular season, but only have two games to play, and they have already locked up a playoff berth, but will be playing for a division title. Good luck, girls, and stay out of overtime games. ASSISTS AND ERRORS- The Delmar Alumni Association held their an-

nual dinner last Saturday evening at the Delmar VFW banquet hall and feasted on an excellent prime rib and crab cake dinner. There was a social hour and silent auction from 5:30 -7, and the large crowd took advantage of it as they reviewed memorabilia, and the only thing that stopped most of the chatter was the call to dinner. Then it all began again after dinner, and President Jack Rider, who incidentally is doing a good job with the association, had a hard job quieting them down so he could handle the introductions and recognitions. The honored guests were Dr. and Mrs. Ring, Delmar’s superintendent; Mrs. Edith Vincent, retired hockey coach and school nurse; Linda Budd, who is in her 14th year as Delmar’s field hockey coach, and Greg Budd; and Ms. Crystal Marshall, who handled the auctioneering and does a great job. The sport that was honored was field hockey, the coaches and players from 1948 to the present. There have been 16 coaches beginning with Helen Spenser, 1948-1950, to Linda Budd who has held that position since 1992. The other coaches and the years they coached were Nancy Gensler Fleetwood (51-52), Edith Vincent (53-55), Erma Hausdorff (56-58), Marilyn Carney (59), Joan Darden (60-61), Rosalie Reinhart (62), Jane Schiller (63), Nancy Hook Slicker (6477 and 80), Barbara Abbott (78-79), Susan Elliott (81), Lisa Harrington/Janice Ruark (82), Lisa Harrington/Bonnie Maddox (83), Bonnie Maddox (84-86), and Pam Gross (87-91). There were 26 ladies listed in the program as in attendance, many of them playing on undefeated teams, and here are some of them who were undefeated: Ann (Phillips) Jones-5 undefeated teams and captain in 1952, Dorothy (Culver) Wolfgang-4 undefeated teams, Doris (Whaley) Banks- 2 undefeated teams, Ina Ray (Calloway) Foskey, 5 undefeated teams and captain, Charlotte (Hardy) Caudill- 5 undefeated teams, Marcia (Craven) Elliott- played 6 years and undefeated in 1959, and Kelly (Burton) Rogers, captain ‘92 and State Champions. I know I am going to get in trouble because I looked down this list of players and saw the names of some really good athletes that I watched play and their names were not included on the undefeated teams, but I could not list all the names; however, they had their pictures taken, and I hope they make the papers because they are very deserving.
