DEAR READERS Dear Readers, So close, yet so far. This is how I was feeling about our conflict with Iran. Not only does the country Iran seem far (although a map shows a shockingly different perspective) but the concern and discussion seemed so far too. In the United States, the Jewish Community was absorbed with the recent AIPAC convention. Here in Israel, although I followed the events closely, it was not a hot topic on the street (not mine, at least). We are too busy going about our daily lives and battling out the real issues at stake: carpool arrangements, laundry pileup, school meetings, Pesach cleaning, where to meet for coffee. We are content to leave the big dilemmas to the big players. But if the Jewish community abroad is to be accused of apathy, what can we say about Israelis? Where is the outrage, the protests, the sense of doom? As we benched Rosh Chodesh Nissan this past week I couldn’t help but feel the reality of a life lived month to month. We ask for long life, peace, blessing, sustenance, prosperity and honor as well as fear of Heaven. We do not take these things for granted. Just because we have

them one moment does not mean we will have them the next. This powerful prayer could not resonate more now. No one knows what the next month will bring. Perhaps our biggest problem will be as mundane as fighting the traffic to work or perhaps we will be fighting for our lives. In truth, it is always a little, or a lot, of both. Our unique ability to carry on in this dual state is our greatest strength. We do not have the luxury to take a week out of the year to lobby for Israel, we are Israel and we are fighting constantly. Clearly our role is different. Perhaps our job is to keep this country going by leading our regular lives and then, when called upon, to take up our position on the front line, whether sending our boys to the army or donning gas masks and preparing for a possible attack on our very homes. And that is a job this country does very, very well. Best wishes for a Chag Kasher V’Sameach, Caryn and Daniella
