Hello

The MODE HQ hive has been abuzz with lots of exciting activity whilst we’ve pulled together this fabulous issue and we’re enjoying every minute of it! Beauty, health and fitness, food and travel, property and interiors all feature highly in this slightly more grown up version of MODE. Motors and gadgets –and believe it or not ‘work’ all come alive and in fact, there’s something for everyone and we hope you’ll find yours.

We’ve been busy reviewing all manner of things just so we can share with you what we love and what we don’t; we’ve taken care of all the hard work for you (you’re welcome). From amazing beauty products and summer scents to some seriously good chocolate #yum. We’ve also dined out at some great restaurants and as we write we have one hand on the suitcase handle as we’re off to check out our next travel destination. We promise you’ll want to read next issue too!

Oh, and everyone’s loving our super giveaway on Twitter. If you haven’t already entered our £50 Harvey Nichols voucher competition, then what are you waiting for? Follow us @MODEmagazines and RT the winning post!

Back to this particularly fine specimen; you’ll find competition prizes worth over £2000 in total, a tip of our fancy hats to this Yorkshire’s racing scene along with a stylish guide to the flat season... ladies, just trust us. Speaking of style, there’s lashings of it here. You’ll notice a few changes to what we’re writing about and we hope you love them because there’s plenty more to come.

I won’t hold you up any longer... turn the page and enjoy the issue...

Meet MODE: Sophia Loves: Gin & Prosecco cocktails and F Scott Fitzgerald. Hates: Cows and Flatforms It’s my job to write about the things I love, bring you the hottest trends, and bang up to date news from across Yorkshire and beyond! Lots of the features in the magazine will have crossed my desk before reaching you, so of course I hope you enjoy them! By the time you have fallen hopelessly in love with all the amazing bits we’ve featured, I’ll already be working on The ‘Man’ Issue. I’m particularly excited to bring you this suited and booted, stylish issue, tailored to the ‘Yorkshire Gent’. If you’d like to be involved, then get in touch; sophia@mode.mg @sophia_king

THE SUPER STYLISH SMARTWATCH Moto 360 Smart Watch: Price TBC, moto360.motorola.com In our opinion, the Moto 360 is the first genuinely stylish smartwatch. HEALTH & FITNESS

aquAllure For those who love the buzz of spinning but find its intensity a little hard to handle, aquAllure is the perfect fit; a 45-minute water workout which “combines the principles of stationary cycling with the soothing powers of water”. Proven to burn up to 800 calories per session and reduce cellulite, as well as generally shred and tone, it’s a low impact, more manageable alternative to the severity of a spin class and whilst honing your bod, it also improves your health, increasing breathing capacity, blood flow, flexibility and recovery.

Your

Favourite

WORKOUT

Kickasana This is the latest in a long line of frankencise (mixed discipline) classes taking the fitness world by storm, following on from favourites like Piloxing (Pilates and boxing) and framework (barre, yoga, ballet and Pilates). It’s an intense mix of yoga and kickboxing, which sees participants practise kicks, hooks, uppercuts and jabs between warrior postures and downward dogs. Although it might sound a little kooky, feedback for the classes has been overwhelmingly positive, reporting an exhilarating workout for both the body and the brain, demanding extra concentration as you quite simply never know what’s coming next.

Fierce

Sandbells Based on the increasingly popular concept of functional fitness, this class sees traditional moves give way to those which better mimic real life: think squatting, lunging and push ups interchanged with plenty of passing, pushing, throwing and pulling. Rather than dumbbells or a weight bar, participants use different weights of “sandbell” (neoprene bags full of sand) throughout, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a workout for the faint hearted. Signature moves like The Rainbow Slam are mixed with heartrate-boosting moves such as frog jumps and knee ups to provide a sweaty, exciting workout that kills calories galore!

14

A great match for fans of Zumba, Fierce is a similarly energetic group dance class inspired by African (rather than Latin) moves. Though it’s unlike anything you’re likely to see within a UK nightclub, its feel good factor makes it a must; a maximum fun workout with a tribal feel and a combination of booty-shaking, toe-tapping and leg-kicking. Better still, it’s easy to follow, with no step counting and a lot of freestyling. Be warned though: toning tricks like squats and knee ups are thrown in to the mix too, making this class an extra-sweaty one.

We are a dynamic team providing physiotherapy, podiatry, personal training, pilates and sports massage. Our integrated team will assess your needs and provide hands-on treatment to regain function.

Matt’s Story 12 months ago Matthew Lloyd was unhappy and unfit, but one self set challenge and a gym membership later, he’d turned his physical health around and gone from overweight individual to international athlete.

enabled him to complete his first UK Ironman Distance Triathlon in May 2014. His aim for the City to Summit Ironman Triathlon was to survive and complete the event in 18 hours, he finished in 15 hours 25 minutes, putting him in 24th place overall, with only 91 people completing the event.

In February 2013, Matt made the decision to become a member of the new Nuffield Fitness & Wellbeing Centre and immediately took them up on the offer of a free Health MOT. For him it was a real eye opener to see, written on paper, just how much his former lifestyle choices had affected his health. He began attending the club regularly and during spells of low motivation the team at the Nuffield would call on him to check everything was OK, speaking of Gail Burton, the clubs Fitness Manger, he said “[Gail] was often on hand to spur me on and regular health MOT’s proved that the work was paying off”. The improvements to his physical wellbeing

Instead of hanging up his trainers after the event, he set a new goal, “Once I completed the event I was ill for a few weeks and decided I needed a new target...I entered a qualification race 2 weeks after the epic City to Summit. I was ill, on antibiotics, and not sleeping.” Matt went on to secure a place on the Great Britain Age Group Team to fly out to Canada in the World Championships. Despite illness and advice from his doctors not to compete he placed 20th in his age group at the National Age Group Championships for the UK. With his sights now set on racing in Canada he is facing not only a physical challenge but a financial one, “My sights are now set on Canada but as this is not an elite team and I am not a professional athlete, the trips are to be self funded. My Nuffield membership has lapsed and the money is

being diverted to fund Canada.” Matt’s story proves that greatness isn’t just born but is made and with the right support we are all capable of achieving what may seem the most outlandish of goals. For Matt it was a membership at Nuffield Health that helped transform his life, “Nuffield Health has assisted me improve my lifestyle and health. Achieving things I didn’t think was possible!” To find out more about how Nuffield Fitness & Wellbeing can help you go to; www.nuffieldhealth.com/fitness-and-wellbeing or call 01302 365588 If you’d like to hear more about Matt’s story and find out how you can support his challenge; www.facebook.com/matthewj.lloyd.5 or call 07851004153

BEAUTY

Chloé Eau De Parfum Capturing the inner spirit of the modern Chloé woman, this fragrance is an entirely addictive powdery rose. With top notes of pink peony, freesia and lychee embodying a subtle freshness, mid notes of magnolia flower, lily of the valley and rose are free to unleash a wave of femininity, subtly dampened by an elegant base of cedarwood, amber and honey.

Marc Jacobs Daisy Delight

Estée Lauder Modern Muse

Another limited edition offering, this is the brand’s latest extension of the ever-popular, Daisy. Much more vibrant than its parent perfume, the top notes of this fragrance incorporate the juicy scents of apple, quince flower and freesia, followed by central notes of iris, gardenia and peony. The composition closes with musk, cedar and sandalwood, ensuring that the end result is elegant yet youthful.

Created with independent, inspiring women in mind, Modern Muse is a sensual spring-appropriate scent, carefully constructed to combine two “distinctively different yet equally dynamic accords”: sparkling jasmine and sleek woods.

WIN £250 OF FRAGRANCE ON PAGE 28

Choo Choosing your signature scent this summer needn’t be a headac headache with these helpful recommendations from MODE.

Chanel Chance A decidedly youthful fragrance, Chance is light and subtly sensual, wholly unique with a romantic edge.

Viktor & Rolf Flower Bomb Quite literally a floral explosion, this scent comprises sambac jasmine, centifolia rose, cattleya orchid and ballerina freesia bloom on a base of patchouli.

Nina Ricci La Tentation de Nina This uplifting fragrance is floral, fresh and fruity; the very embodiment of summer. It begins with the citrus notes of bergamot before introducing a heart of raspberry, almond, lemon and bulgarian rose, which is softened by notes of bourbon vanilla, white musk and sandalwood at its base. Be warned though, it’s limited edition, so grab it while you can!

22

Lancome La Vie Est Belle Feminine and romantic, this is the perfect scent to reach for on those dusky spring nights. Entwining “the elegance of iris with the strength of patchouli and the sweetness of a gourmand blend”, it is the brand’s modern interpretation of classic oriental fragrances, full of depth, complexity and flavour.

Calvin Klein Endless Euphoria Lighter and more radiant than it’s more evening-appropriate counterpart, Endless Euphoria captures the scent of summer sunshine, opening with a breeze of aired cherry blossom flowering into uplifting violet at the heart before drying down to sensual bamboo at its base. Utterly wearable and not at all overbearing, this one is a must-have addition your 2014 fragrance cabinet.

Burberry Brit Rhythm For Her Fronted by the beautiful Suki Waterhouse, Burberry Brit Rhythm is a scent for free spirits. It begins with a rush of english lavender, neroli and pink peppercorn before plunging into an intoxicating heart of blackberry leaves, orris absolute and orange flower absolute, all supported by a baseline of vetiver, musk and vibrant woods.

It’s our 10th Birthday!

DKNY Be Delicious City Blossom The latest incarnation of DKNY’s Be Delicious range, the City Blossom line is available in three different but equally stunning scents. Rooftop Peony sees delicate notes of rose absolut wrapped around velvety peony and succulent raspberry to create a fragrance of sweet indulgence; a little lighter than it’s counterpart, Urban Violet, which conveys the essence of “a flowering oasis in the heart of the city”. The final fragrance, Empire Apple, focuses on the use of an exclusive american apple accord and is easily the most mature of the three, with a sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and sensual woods.

Eau De Parfum was £49.99 but will be available at Lakeside Village for only £33.99, whilst the masculine Boss Bottled Night 200ml was £69.99 but is available from the store for £48.99. Look out on Facebook for a chance to win £250 of fragrance with MODE too.

Visitors to Doncaster’s Lakeside Village Outlet Centre enjoyed giveaways and discounts when a major new perfume store opened this Easter.

Cheryl Sadler, Centre Manager at Lakeside Village, said: “It’s always a great honour to welcome a new store and our visitors will be over the moon to be able to buy all of their favourite designer favourites from The Fragrance Shop at discounted prices, in a friendly, pleasant environment.”

The Fragrance Shop is the UK’s favourite fragrance specialist and the new store will offer the very best fragrances by celebrity, designer and high street brands at up to 60% off RRP, in a clean, bright and modern environment. To celebrate the opening, customers were given goody bags worth up to £28 with every purchase. Each contained an YSL L’Homme 200ml Shower Gel, an 18g pack of Especially Escada Bath Crystals and fragrance samples. There are many deals available in store such as the sparkling Armani Diamonds 50ml

The Fragrance Shop spokesperson, Daniel Thompson, added: “We are delighted to open a new store at Doncaster’s Lakeside Village Outlet. is already popular with visitors across South Yorkshire and beyond. The Fragrance Shop opened its first store in Liverpool in 1994 and has since grown to become a national fragrance retailer. The ‘happy’ retailer recently launched a new motto ‘Spray a little happiness’ – designed to reflect the happy nature of fragrances. As part of the happy message, The Fragrance Shop donates 5p from every transaction to Rays of Sunshine, a children’s charity who grant the wishes of seriously ill children across the UK. Since the launch of the new motto, over £250,000 has been raised for the children’s charity. Hat by Jennifer Roberts

There may not be a formal dress code for every racecourse. But as a general rule of thumb, my top tips will ensure that w when attending the races you get it right every time in the fashion stakes.

With the race season in full swing we called up on racing style expert Rebecca Johnson, author of furlongfashion.com and girlfriend to racehorse trainer Scott Dixon, for a few tips to ensure we’re first out the gate in the style stakes! 30

Opt for comfort as you’ll be on your feet all day. If wearing new shoes make sure that you break them in a couple of days before the races. There is nothingg worse s than seeing ng ladies leaving the racecourse ra ace ceco c urse with h their th shoes sho in hand, ruining sh all of the hard workk th that h has gone into perfecting their outfit. out Wedges are also a grea great e t option as stilettos will sink on turf or alternatively invest in alte a pair of Tipsy Feat which are T brilliant brillian foldable flat pumps that are small enough to fit in your handbag.. Erica Metallic Tejus Wedge LK Bennett £195.00 lkbennett.com

Dresses: When choosing yourr dress for the races remember you are not ot at a nightclub or a ball so please leave the sequinned inned evening gowns at home. me. Dresses should be off modest length, if you u are opting for a shorter ter length dress ensure that your décolletagee is covered. Binoculars rs should be focused on n the horses and not deep cleavage, groin level skirts and excessive female flesh! h!

Draped stretch-jersey dress Donna Karan £1,330 Net-a-porter.com

Ladies Shoes:

Ladies Accessories: Make a fun statement by teaming a plain dress with a pop of colour. Colourful, chunky necklaces and bright heels can make you stand out from the crowd, and carrying a brightly coloured handbag will Gold-plated multi-stone definitely draw necklace Bijoux Heart attention. If £1,360 Net-a-porter.com your dress is busy add subtle accessories such as a simple necklace or understated handbag. Remember diamonds are acceptable but pearls never look out of place at the races. Ladies’ hats: ats Hats are not compulsory and unless attending Royal Ascot or Glorious Goodwood, I would only wear a hat on Ladies Day. From pillboxes to berets, flying saucers to feathered fancies, there are hats of all shapes and sizes to complement any outfit; the key is getting the right size and to know which style suits you best. A hat that is too big or too small is as uncomfortable as an ill-fitting pair of shoes. Remember anything goes when it comes to headwear. Race season is the only time most ladies get to wear a fantastic hat, so have fun with it and try something different

Hair: Don’t fuss fu around with your hair too much. elaborate and intricate up ‘do might look An ela great when you have it done, but you don’t grea want it falling and looking messy later wa iin the day. If you do decide to go up, hairspray is your best friend! Pop a purse-sized hairspray in your clutch for touch-ups. Make sure you keep your hat or fascinator in mind when choosing the look. Your hair style should complement the hat, rather than be the style you want to wear regardless. If your hat or fascinator is over the top and bold, keep your hair sleek and slicked back in a high or low ponytail for a sexy modern look. With a prettier or more subtle headpiece, go for hair down and loosely curled. If you’re d heading to a salon to have your hair hea done, make sure you take the hat so you can discuss discu with the stylist. Take some spare hair pi pins and a hair bobble just in case you need to whip it up and away from your face at the end of the day. Styling: When shopping online, buy the outfit first and then complement the overall ensemble with beautiful accessorises. Always think about your silhouette as a whole rather than looking at your outfit as separate elements. A great tip is to download a collage app for your phone and then put all of the pieces of your outfit together to see how it looks as a whole.

How To Wear It: At a slightly jaunty angle down over the right eyebrow is best, and not on the back of the head 31

Suits: For gentlemen attending the races a suit or, jacket and chinos combination is a must. All women universally agree…there is nothing more appealing than a man in a well fitted suit looking dapper! When choosing your suit remember a suit that is too big looks equally as bad as a suit that is too tight! Jacket sleeves should fall where the base of your thumb meets your wrist, and between a quarter and a half inch of shirt cuff should be visible. Men’s Shoes: A gentleman’s shoes are the first thing that a woman looks at and are a vitally important factor to any mans ensemble. Gentlemen always ensure that your shoes match your belt and are well polished. Tasselled loafers in either leather or suede always look eminently suitable among the racing crowd. Add a flash of brightly coloured patterned sock showing below the ankle and you’re readyy to hit the racecourse in style. y y

Ted Baker Leafpack Socks £8.00 John Lewis

Oliver Sweeney Cummersdale Socks Royal £15.00 John Lewis

Duchamp Regular Stripe Socks, Navy/Orange £10.50 John Lewis

Men’s Accessories: Now, this is where you can just let loose and have endless possibilities. There are so many stunning options for a gentleman when it comes to shirts and ties, so don’t be afraid to just explode. Make a great combination with the two or go simple with a block coloured shirt and then let the tie say something about you by making it a bold pattern. Finish off your outfit with a pair of cufflinks and add in a pocket square to give yourself that debonair touch. Enjoy: A day at the races is one of the most glamorous and exciting days of the year. It is a great chance to Dress up, experiment with seasonal fashion, enjoy the people watching and cheer on the horses but remember the golden rule when drinking-pace yourself. A day at the races is a marathon not a sprint!

The Ilkley Shoe Company Beginning life as a much trusted and loved cobblers, The Ilkley Shoe Company has grown into much more than that and has earned a deserved reputation as one of the regions finest gentleman’s shoe retailers. “When wearing a good shoe, you’ll find that people stop you and ask where you got them from,” says Paul, owner of The Ilkley Shoe Company. His go-to compliment-grabbers are Loake Burfords; comfortable yet noticeable and just one of the many styles that are stocked in store. “Shoes are the finishing touch to an outfit and can also create an excellent first impression,” he says. The store currently stocks men’s ranges Barker, Loake, Cheaney, Sebago and Trickers, introducing between 16 and 32 new styles each year; though if they don’t have what you’re looking for, it’s no trouble at all to order in your chosen pair. They’re also a stockist of the Barker ladies range, with plans to introduce designs by Loake, cementing the store’s reputation as one of Leeds’ footwear hotspots. Don’t be misled though: The Ilkley Shoe Company is about much more than just shoes. They are one of Leeds’ largest retailers of Hunter, stocking wellies, shoes, outdoor wear and coats, with a range of styles aimed at both men and women, as well as offering a vast range of leather luggage and travel bags for stylish explorers, making it a one-stop shop for discerning and quality seeking shoppers.

Win Your Wedding

in association with

The “Win Your Wedding” campaign is about finding a wonderful couple, who are madly in love and deserve nothing less than a perfect day. The Earl of Doncaster in association with MODE launched a competition to do just that and so the search began.

Over 1000 couples registered for the chance to win the incredible prize, worth over £20,000, of an entire wedding package, and with so many wonderful sponsors and suppliers involved, it wasn’t surprising. The Earl of Doncaster Hotel, the masters behind the spectacular giveaway, hosted two wedding fair days and invited along all the registered couples, giving them a chance to meet with the suppliers and also to tell the judges why they believed they deserved to win! The competition is running in association with MODE, and so we have been lucky enough to read the humbling entries that were submitted.

We were moved by so many of the stories, it was overwhelming to hear from so many deserving and special couples and whittling it down to the finalists was no easy task but just over a month ago the finalists were announced and once again invited back to The Earl to progress to next stage of the competition. The gathered couples were set a charity challenge to raise funds for a choice of chosen causes, with the judging criteria taking into account the overall amounts raised by each couple, the level of exposure they managed to achieve as well as overall creativity. The finalists wasted no time at

45

all, with one couple managing to secure a spot on Hallam FM on the morning following the briefing! The competition will come to a close at a spectacular grand final, set to take place at The Earl with live entertainment and extra razzmatazz. The couples will all take part in a Mr & Mrs game show style finale, and friends and family are invited to what is set to be a fantastic evening, with the lucky winners being announced on the night!

PROPERTY

No.1 Yorkshire ÂŁ650,000, Fine & Country Possibly the most illustrious address in the region, No.1 Yorkshire is a fine, Grade II listed three storey town house, constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a pantile roof. The property dates from the late C18th with a later two storey extension to the rear, and has been lovingly maintained and restored retaining original features and character. The adjacent coach house has been converted to provide garaging and additional accommodation, and there is off road parking for several cars and delightful walled gardens to the rear. With four reception rooms on the ground floor, three with open fires and the dining room with a four oven Aga, you will have plenty of room when entertaining guests. The kitchen has an extensive range of units and a concealed utility area with a recently upgraded gas boiler which serves the central heating system which was overhauled in 2011. There is a TV room reached from the half landing, with the four bedrooms shared between the first and second floors, while boasting a master bedroom suite comprising of a dressing room and en-suite bathroom, with a house bathroom serving the remaining bedrooms. There is an additional dressing room/bedroom 5 on the second floor. The former coach house now provides garaging with a kitchenette and WC to the rear and the former tack room is now a garden store. At first floor level is a large split level room, currently used as a studio/gymnasium. There is an alarm system to both the main house and the Coach House. The private walled gardens of the property adjoin Cockhill lane to the South with open countryside and views towards Scrooby church beyond. Located in the highly desirable market town of Bawtry in Doncaster the property boasts easy access to an excellent array of local shops, boutiques and restaurants as well as a number of highly regarded schools within the immediate area.

Duffy London In 2002, founder Christopher Duffy, a design graduate from the University of Brighton made his humble beginning creating products in his kitchen.

Boasting strong eco-credentials, everything is handmade to order by skilled craftspeople in the UK, using sustainable wood and other ecofriendly materials and mediums.

Duffy London’s designs are ideas-based, combining art and function and playing with the concepts of gravity, geometry and illusion. The innovative and quirky designs spring from the mind of Chris, however, he also draws on his

talented designers and manufacturers to turn these concepts into quality products.

Having grown out of the kitchen a long time ago, Duffy London now perform their furnituremaking wizardry in a spacious studio in east London.

The Abyss Table: Like all of Duffy’s designs, the Abyss Table is a conversation piece as much as a functional one. But while previous works play with gravity, this new design is concerned with depth, and creates a geological cross-section as mesmerising as the sea. Limited edition of only 25, £5,800

The Milli Chair: This is an idea with legs- lots of them! A large reversible chair that works either as a relaxing bedroom chair with two positions, or when used in pairs a chaise longue. From £1,500

Chandelier Glo Canvases: Combining opulent bling, with minimalist chic, the Glo-Canvas chandelier will brighten up your room and be light on your pocket From £195

For the boardroom: The Swing Table Bring the playground into the boardroom or dining room with the Swing Table. From £8,985.00

“WE DON’T STOP PLAYING BECAUSE WE GROW OLD, WE GROW OLD BECAUSE WE STOP PLAYING.”

The Up Balloon Table: The UP Balloon Table is a playful trompe l’oeil, giving the impression of a glass table top being suspended by gold and silver balloons. Limited edition of only 20, £5,800

Learn more about the BeoVision Avant: www.bang-olufsen.com/BeoVision-Avant-Sound

Unfolding Sound Definitive Style Redefining the television’s place in the home with the innovative BeoVision Avant, Bang & Olufsen.

70

Sublime Ultra High Definition (4K) video performance and jaw-dropping acoustic authenticity are built in. But BeoVision Avant also amazes with magical convenience based on a strong understanding of how we want to live with the television – and how high-end multimedia entertainment can go hand in hand with uncompromising design. At Bang & Olufsen, innovation begins with understanding user needs before merging technology and craftsmanship to deliver design with lasting value. Case in point: BeoVision Avant, the company’s latest television. Based on Bang & Olufsen research and innovation, this flagship entertainment centre has the muscle and finesse to deliver breath-taking performance when family and friends gather around it. But it also has the good manners to blend in to the living room – and with the family’s lifestyle – when people choose to do something else. And because it was conceived to last in a changing digital world, it is ready and able to work seamlessly with all the devices and content sources anyone in the family might want to use – with none of the complexity.

In the Bang & Olufsen tradition of taming technology in the service of simplicity, BeoVision Avant introduces a number of innovations that build new bridges between electronics and magical movement. Waking gracefully as you switch it on, the BeoVision Avant turns smoothly towards you and enigmatically unveils not only a rich, ultra-sharp, perfectly contrasted picture, but also a delightful surprise. Elegantly unfolding beneath the bevelled edge of the television’s screen, a panel of hitherto concealed loudspeakers appears, set to wow you with breathtaking sound. It’s a truly magical performance. As you would expect from Bang & Olufsen, BeoVision Avant sounds extraordinary right out of the box. But be prepared to discover just how good a television can sound with no fewer than eight driver units and eight dedicated amplifiers built in. The sound panel that magically glides from the television when it is turned on performs brilliantly on its own. If you want to connect external speakers to create a true surround sound experience – either wirelessly or wired – it could not be simpler with the integrated 7.1 surround sound module.

71

Not only does BeoVison Avant offer superior sound quality, but also an exceptional viewing experience. A new Chromatic Room Adaptation feature analyses ambient light from two sensors, and adjusts the screen to compensate for the room’s colour tones. High-grade anti-reflection coatings on both sides of the screen dampen reflections by 98%. So wherever you choose to watch it, BeoVision Avant is ready to deliver spectacular Ultra HighDefinition (4K) performance. The concept vision was to create a TV which stays in the background of the living room when turned off and wakes up to action and takes centre stage when turned on. The tireless engineering that has gone into making the BeoVision Avant, with its in-built, smart adaptable features are what make it so special. HOMES & GARDEN

Carolyn Parker Interior Design Carolyn Parker Interior Design, of York, has been established for almost twenty years, and their reputation as a highly skilled practice extends beyond our own shores, with offices based in Portugal due to their success and popularity in Europe.

74

It’s not surprising that Carolyn and her daughter Abby, who joined the practice over six years ago, are so sought after; they are after all listed as one of the Top Twenty Interior Designers in the UK by The Telegraph. Looking at their portfolio, it could be said that their aesthetic is elegant and contemporary, with a rich use of natural textures and material, adding depth and character. But really it is their versatility and their commitment to the clients vision that sets them apart. We spoke with designer Abigail Owens on to find out their predictions for interior design this season, what inspires their work, and why she’d love to design David Attenborough’s home. In your field you must always be looking for great sources of inspiration, what would you say inspires you most? Abigail: We take great inspiration from our surroundings, especially at our Head Office in North Yorkshire, we have our studio in a converted barn and the views are breathtakingly beautiful, looking out onto rolling countryside. It reminds us of the beauty of natural products and that we need to create spaces that allow us to stop and stare.

What are your predictions for interior decor this autumn/winter?

When you meet with a client and begin a project do you have any design rules?

A: There is a strong look in metallic’s combined with natural woods and other natural products. I think we will see lots of bronze tones and more organic looking pieces of furniture. I think there is a new sense of positivity in the Interiors world now that the economy is picking up again and I am loving the re-growth that’s being reflected in designs and a certain feeling of freedom.

A: Listen to the Client. If you are not listening to them and visualising their dreams then no matter what you design, it’s utterly worthless!

Do you have any easy design tips that people can n implement themselves?

Do you have a favourite design feature, from a house you have designed or from your own home? A: Georgian properties always hold a special place in our hearts and Carolyn’s home is a beautiful example of a Georgian farmhouse. Attached to the Georgian build is one of the old dairy barns and Carolyn has created the most stunning brick alcoves, it really has an impact. We’ve seen a lot of recent interiors collections that have been inspired by catwalk trends, are there any trends that you’ve loved? A: I absolutely adore Versace’s latest collections with the leather belts and buckles and you can now get some beautiful leather trimmings and hold backs that just bring your scheme bang up to date. I think after Victoria Beckham’s latest editorial campaign we will also be seeing a lot more tartans and cashmeres.

A: I think collecting things that you love and inspire you is a great way to start, you might not be able to afford them now but it’s always a good idea to have a design in mind and build towards it. I also think Pinterest is a fantastic tool for bringing your ideas together. Sometimes, taking things out of a room and starting again really helps you look at the space and helps you decide if you really need so much in there or helps you to place those things throughout your home and have a bit of a re-shuffle. Just re-arranging the furniture can make you fall in love with a space again or have the opposite effect entirely! If you could design any celebrities home, dead or alive who would it be and why? A: I would love to design for David Attenborough! I just love the idea of rooting around all the treasures he must have collected over the years and placing them into his dream home. I think mastering an eclectic is actually one of the most challenging looks, there’s always the danger of making it look like a jumble sale!

FOOD & DRINK

If you’ve ever enjoyed a glass or two on the Champagne lawn at Doncaster Races, you’ll undoubtedly have noticed, if not spent time, inside The Old Weighing Room.

After a sympathetic yet extensive refurbishment, the doors are now well and truly open as it’s already difficult to book a table after an exceptionally pleasing first visit. The Old Weighing Room has retained its architectural design features from the 1920s including the feature windows and high ceilings that serve to create an elegant bar area. Luxurious fittings have been carefully chosen and unique seating areas are set throughout, each cluster giving space for both privacy and yet somehow, atmosphere. Greeted by Ryan, the restaurant manager, it’s easy to see why this project is already celebrating success. The passion is infectious and it seems his enthusiasm has filtered throughout his whole team. Each and every person I had the pleasure of being served by seemed genuinely happy to be there, something that in my experience, is quite rare. After a few relaxing drinks in the bar area, we go through to eat. The dining room itself is sublime; to me it says London five star hotel and leaves me anticipating the same of the food. Chef Robinson has been recruited to run the kitchen, having previously worked for the Jamie Oliver Foundation as a training chef for No.15 restaurant in Cornwall so I’m certainly feeling positive.

88

OUR MENU TO START Yorkshire smoked duck breast, crispy prosciutto ham, fig salad with a rhubarb & ginger dressing Brandade of Whitby smoked haddock, crispy poached egg, white wine & mussel sauce THE MAIN Seared blue fin tuna steak with salsa Verde, chunky chips & herb salad 28 day aged 10oz grilled North Yorkshire rib eye steak with bone marrow butter, triple cooked chips, roast garlic and watercress salad DESSERT Glazed lemon tart with crème fraiché and strawberry salsa Warm chocolate brownie with butterscotch sauce and clotted cream TO FINISH Iced cappuccino parfait cup with Biscotti

The menu is exciting –and pleasantly ‘foodie’ enough to attract diners from much further afield too. It celebrates British modern cuisine using freshly sourced local and seasonal ingredients with some classic signature dishes and a Great British Sunday Lunch. The waiters were animated enough in their descriptions of their recommendations that we went with them and didn’t regret a single choice. Of the four of us that dined every one of us has sworn an absolute declaration to return as we all tasted each dish and were each as delighted by every single one. My particular favourite was the tuna which was ‘flashed’ to perfection and exactly as I requested.

The portions were ample too! Food of this type can sometimes raise the odd eyebrow as it is set down on the table. It seems there could be that little bit more –until the plate is finished that is, and leaves us educated as to why it was exactly as it was. There was however just enough room for dessert which in a word was exceptional. We raved about the chocolate brownie so much that Ryan brought us an extra one for the centre of the table so that we could all share a little bit more – now that is service!

charm of The Weighing Room; it tries so hard it feels like the end result is an effortless perfection indeed equal to any five star establishment. We all leave extremely pleased that we have this on our doorstep, and we travel for food, a lot! Prepare to be more than pleasantly surprised.

After dinner, we opted to have a relaxing drink on the terrace which is so peaceful without the racing crowd. Looking out onto the Racecourse at sunset is a beautiful prelude to an evening like this one and I really could be anywhere. That’s the

FOOD & DRINK

Hearing that the Toad & Tatie was the latest venture by Holmfirth foodie super couple Mark and Lorraine Irving, we couldn’t wait to book our table.

THE TOAD & TATIE

This was always going to bring back memories. We lived in Holmfirth some years ago when my fiancé and I first met and we still have family there now. There was a restaurant we used to frequent; (I use this term instead of ‘visit most weekends’) locals reading will know it –Le Caveaux. A homely cave of an eatery serving the finest tapas you ever did eat and also its first floor, slightly larger and lighter Premier Etage. Owners Mark and Lorraine were always in the house, passionately describing, grilling, baking, chatting and gently encouraging us to try new things. Pleasantly filled, we’d languish over our second bottle of Sancerre and stroll home past the old Vic pub for one last night cap.

REVIEW

How ironic then, that Mark and Lorraine have now lovingly restored the Old Victoria and dragged it inch by inch toward the higher echelons of Yorkshire’s culinary ‘must eats’ list?

We’re encouraged to order ‘what we fancy’ and from there the service is choreographed to perfection. After their children’s nicknames; Joe (Toad) and Katie (Tatie), the restaurant has the same mix of key ingredients that made their other restaurants such a hit. Lorraine, front of house and still just as passionate about delivering an amazing experience; And Mark, the Chef who’s life depends on making available as much of his exceptional culinary repertoire as possible to create the ultimate choice –or so it would seem. This passion is infectious and we can’t help but notice that all of the staff have had huge helpings of the stuff in equal quantities –and they loved it. 92

OUR MENU Warm home-made bread with dipping oils and balsamic Mixed tapas meat board Tempura battered squid with lemon mayonnaise There’s a delicious A La Carte menu, equally, the tapas is a popular choice. There’s a huge chalkboard to ponder over. The list is endless and the cooking methods so varied that it’s obvious what we are looking at is derived from complete and utter dedication and a respect for the ingredients -speaking of which, are local and seasonal -these guys even have their own smoke house! We’re encouraged to order ‘what we fancy’ and from there the service is choreographed to perfection. The cooking and timings, all just perfect and the dishes are set down in an order that complement each other, and indeed the palate. Open stone and contemporary steel against solid oak makes decoration, simple yet warm and welcoming. The Toad & Tatie caters for literally every type of diner. You prefer an armchair by an open fire or a cosy corner sofa setting? Tick. You wish to eat more formally and ‘upright’? Tick, it has that too. Dine causally in the bar or at a high table on a stool and there’s even a curtained off private area, intimate enough for big families and spacious enough for small do’s. Summer means inside goes outside too with an open courtyard for parties, BBQ’s hog roasts and generally whatever the mood takes. 93

Speciality Piri Piri chicken cooked on open coals with home-made chilli jam Moules marinière with home-made granary bread Chorizo & belly pork cassoulet baked in terracotta Crème brûlée –for two!

Opting for the bar, our food began to arrive and wowed us from the moment we set eyes on it. Not just because of the ‘proper Yorkshire’ portions, not because of the pride taken in every dish, not because of that choreography we mentioned earlier... but because of the taste; every mouthful was honestly delicious. The lightest of tempura coated squid, was my personal favourite along with the Piri Piri chicken skewer with homemade chilli salsa. For us, the Toad & Tatie not only brought back old memories but created new ones, and ones we’ll not easily forget -so much so we remembered to book again for next weekend! Maybe we’ll see you there.

Whether it’s intimate dining for two, a celebration with friends, or you simply want to join us for a glass on the terrace, we look forward to welcoming you soon. FOOD & DRINK

Scrumptious & Seasonal

SEASONAL SHOPPING LIST Fennel Fennel has a number of uses, and is healthy for you too. The leaves, seeds, bulbs and pollen are all edible and can be cooked in numerous ways. It works extremely well with fish.

Sea Bass Sea Bass is a lean saltwater fish that is meaty and suitable for most types of cooking. Many chefs have said that Sea Bass is the fish equivalent to a chicken breast. Sea Bass is a great fish for many dishes.

Tarte Tatin The Tarte Tatin originates from France and is best described as an upside down tart in which fruits (normally apples) are caramelized before the tart is baked. Research shows that the dessert was firstly an accident made by Stephanie Tatin of Hotel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron. She started to make an apple pie but after smelling burning she tried to rescue the dish and turned it upside down. Her guests loved it and it became the hotel’s signature dish!

MENU STARTER

MAIN COURSE

DESSERT

Green cumber & mint gazpacho soup

Crispy sea bass with minted fennel & radish salad

Peach Tarte Tatin

This simple and satisfying soup is a great starter to any fish dish. As both ingredients are seasonal at the moment we have used them in our starter. Being refreshing and cool this recipe is perfect for complimenting the rich flavours of the crisp sea bass in the main course.

Following on from the soup we picked this super strong main. The anise flavour of the fennel really works well with the sea bass and brings out its flavour and meaty texture. The radish is the perfect accompaniment to both as its fresh, tasty and looks the part.

Peaches are great at this time of year and a juicy light fruit after a fishy main. Tarte Tatin is often chosen by our fish expert Rick Stein as a fabulous treat for afters. Who wouldn’t love a gloriously sticky sweet toffee topped caramelised fruity dessert?

Pick up some sea bass at Doncaster’s much loved fishmongers Zuvu located in Bawtry or Tickhill, you can even have it delivered nationwide via www.yorkshirefish.co.uk

Would you try White chocolate and caviar cupcakes? Tweet us #YEScaviar or #NOcaviar to @ModeMagazines and we will share the results in our next issue.

NOW FOR THE WINE We spoke with a Mirabeau wine specialist who says- “Sea bass pairs beautifully with dry wines that won’t overpower their delicate fishy flavour, a Rose from Provence adds that extra dimension, Mirabeau’s crunchy red apple and summer berry fruity notes will bring out the sweeter notes to the fish as well as matching up to richness of the skin. Mirabeau has a decent amount of acidity which will cut through the fish oils and leave the palate refreshed and thirsty for more!”

FOOD HERO: RICK STEIN As our recipe is tailored around sea bass we picked Rick Stein who really knows his stuff when it comes to cooking fish, he even has his own seafood cookery school to show others how to do it!

RECIPE

Peach Tarte Tatin Ingredients: • • • • • • •

Plain flour 4 Peaches 100g golden caster sugar 500g puff pastry 100ml Calvados 1 vanilla pod 50g butter

How to make: •

Preheat your oven to gas mark 5. With the plain flour dust your chopping board and rolling pin with the flour and roll out the puff pastry. No thicker than 0.5cm.

Peal your peaches and halve them, use a teaspoon to get rid of the core.

With an oven proof pan scatter the sugar, calvados and vanilla seeds and vanilla pod. Place in the oven on a medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture forms to caramel.

After caramel is cooked and is a chestnut brown colour, then add your peaches.

Carefully stir the peaches in the pan and cook for 5 minutes until the peaches soften. Add the butter (cubed) then lay the pastry on top. Tuck the pastry down into the edges.

Bake the Tatin for 25-30 minutes or until golden.

Take the Tatin out of the oven and place a serving plate on top of the oven proof pan and carefully turn it over.

Serve with your choice of cream or ice cream and enjoy! 97

INVESTMENT

Art: a word that rouses both interest and fear in the minds of millions. Some say, whether inaccurate or not, art is for thinkers and pretentious-posers; but with more opportunity than ever to jump aboard the train to collector’s common, whatever your budget or expertise, the line of bumbling beginners is slowly starting to grow. So where should one begin? Well, like with any big projects, it’s always best to start with research. To the largest degree possible, immerse yourself completely in the world of art, reading magazines, scrolling through blogs, scanning websites and, of course, visiting galleries. Discover your tastes - your likes, your dislikes - and also your motive for buying: do you want to make money on your purchases or simply build up a collection you can keep (and love) forever? Put yourself out there as much as possible and get educated. Although the thought of stepping into an art opening as a complete amateur may fill you with fear, the staff at such spaces may eventually reward you for your bravery. There’s every chance that, after signing up to a gallery newsletter or asking about a piece that piques your interest, you may be granted access to advantageous information, for example, the name of the next up-and-comer they’ll be hosting

or which priceless painting they’re putting up for auction later in the year. They make the effort if you do and weaving yourself a sizeable web of wellinformed connections is as essential for a wannabe collector as a good artistic eye. So introduce yourself to artists, gallerists and dealers - only the trustworthy ones, of course - and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Whilst reading every art history book in the library will top up your knowledge of the greats, these people will be your informants on the talent of tomorrow, ideally placed in the thick of the current scene, keeping an eye out for the next big thing. Spotting a gifted artist before everyone else does will put you on the map with a multitude of collectors and dealers, and, if it’s what you’re after, can earn you a bucket load of cash when they eventually hit the big time. This is often much easier said than done though, requiring, yes, a little bit of knowledge, but an even bigger serving of luck. The fate of an artist, and in turn their work, is tricky to predict: some wander into the scene, make a splash and enjoy their time before making a swift exit, whereas other slip slowly into consciousness, taking their time to perfect a few faultless collections and resultantly solidifying their presence for the years ahead. Therefore, as a beginner, it’s probably best to avoid buying tactically for profit and generally just go with your gut. After all, there’s always a chance that a piece won’t sell on straight away, and it’s you who’ll have to live with it - it’s bound to be a much more welcome lodger if you love it for something other than its potential net worth. That said, money is always something to bear in mind, whether you have a budget of two or two-hundred grand; although it’s not the amount of money you have, but the way in which you spend it that matters. The most common mistake for a beginner to make is buying when ill-informed, so as is often the case, your most valuable weapon against being ripped off (or simply biting off more than you can chew) is knowledge. Be aware that, for example, rarity as well as quality automatically ups a piece’s value, and that, particularly with prints, the smaller the edition the higher the price: familiarise yourself with these general rules and you’ll know straight away if whatever you’re buying is worth what you’re willing to pay for it.

To the largest degree possible, immerse yourself completely in the world of art, reading magazines, scrolling through blogs, scanning websites and, of course, visiting galleries.

If it’s not, be open to haggling, as, contrary to a beginner’s beliefs, the spending doesn’t stop once you’ve got your purchase home: there are plenty of hidden costs to keep your bank card busy, from restoration to reframing to insurance. At this stage, it might be best to ask for expert advice in order to avoid any mishaps. For example, would you know that if you plan to mount your piece on a wall, it must be glazed to museum standards, with acidfree matting and light-resistant glass? Chance it if you dare, but for works older than ten years, an art conservator’s opinion is a must.

Aside from the technical aspects though, try not to take too much notice of what they, or anyone else, think about your choices. Art, at its core, is a pastime based on the beauty of subjectivity. No two people will have the same artwork wish list or the exact same opinion on a thought-provoking piece, and that in itself provides the excitement and anticipation so acutely captured within the industry. So ignore the critics and only buy the pieces that you simply cannot live without. Because, at the end of the day, like every creative venture, it all comes down to passion; every wannabe collector’s most important weapon.

A New Job What Do I Need To Know About The Contract I’ve Been Offered? So, you’ve got a new job lined up, the employer is keen for you to start and they’ve sent you a draft contract of employment asking you to sign it. Stop! Don’t rush, please read it carefully and check it suits your needs. If it doesn’t, now is the time to get it changed.

www.morrishsolicitors.com info@morrishsolicitors.com twitter: @morrishlaw facebook: /morrishsolicitors

In the balance of power between employee and employer, the employer is nearly always in the stronger bargaining position – one of the few occasions where the balance is equal is the point prior to starting a new job – this is where you can best negotiate changes to terms and conditions. In addition to pay and benefits, look at the other proposed contractual terms and consider negotiating (to remove, trim or change). Key points may be: • Is the place of work to be a set location or is there a mobility clause in your contract? A mobility clause details how ‘mobile’ you agree to be, for example working at different locations. If there is, try to get a limit set on what is considered to be ‘reasonable’ mobility under the clause, such as distance or travelling time (e.g. a maximum 3 hours per day). Otherwise, you don’t want to find yourself facing an additional 50 miles across heavy traffic to get to a different workplace. • Are there any restrictions, known as restrictive covenants, in the contract that you will continue to be bound by after you leave and for how long will they apply - such as restrictions on contacting customers and ex-colleagues, confidentiality, agreeing to assist the exemployer or working for competitors? You will one day leave the employer’s employment (maybe to work in the same town or city and within the same sector) - you need to clarify this now so as not to become limited in choice (having to work in a different city, sector etc.) after your employment ends. 111

• Is there a flexibility clause? Flexibility may be in relation to shift patterns, the duties you are expected to do or even levels of pay or entitlement to bonuses. • Is there a training repayment clause requiring you to repay your employer any training costs (for courses you attend, qualifications you receive etc) they incur, possibly on a full or scaled repayment basis? The key is to make sure that you can live with the contractual terms, not only whilst you are in their employment but after your employment ends. Remember - once you’ve signed the contract and arrived for your first day of work, the pressure on the employer to change any terms will reduce (if they are keen for you to start soon, they are more likely to agree to changes) and they’ll become less willing to change it. It may seem tricky to negotiate such things but it’s not unusual – also, many an employer is likely to be impressed by negotiations conducted sensibly and realistically. For more guidance and assistance on this – a sensible, realistic approach - contact Morrish Solicitors LLP on 03333 44 9600 or info@ morrishsolicitors.com We assist people with all shapes and sizes of problems at work - advice on contracts, disciplinary/grievance procedures, negotiation of severance packages, settlement agreements and mediation, as well representation in the employment tribunals and courts.

Women In The

Workplace

Employers serious about change need to make female talent a core business priority. “Project 28-40 – The Report” is a reality check for employers. 28-40 is a critical age for career development – the danger zone where women are not promoted at the same rate as men – a problem not just for women but for companies too. There is a gap between organisational policies and the actual experiences of women aged 28-40 at work, including real challenges on bullying and harassment. Women want excellent line management – the basics are far more important than more female only programmes. Women want better management of their talent and stronger support for their career development. Regular, fair and transparent performance reviews, clear definition of roles, better role-models, along with mentoring and coaching opportunities all featured strongly in Project 28-40 survey responses. To this extent, women are no different to men. Flexible working is essential to women in balancing their commitments, but the stigma attached can be an obstacle to progression. Women still feel conflicted about balancing career and family and the vast majority of those without children (that want them) are nervous about the impact having children will have on their careers. While most women feel supported by their partner and wider family to develop their careers, only 52% feel supported by their employer to do so. Organisations need to shift their focus from women’s development

to addressing workplace culture and practice, and deal with powerful stereotypes that have a negative impact on women and their progression in the workplace. Helena Morrissey CBE, CEO of Newton Investment Management and Chair of Opportunity Now, said: “If business leaders are serious about change, we need to take the lead on women’s progression, moving this from a diversity initiative to a core business priority. Set aspirational targets for the number of women you want to see at every level of your organisation”. Kathryn Nawrockyi, Director of Opportunity Now, said: “Today’s report shows that women are just as confident, able and ambitious as men, while sharing similar priorities in work and life. Frustratingly, they are still not receiving enough support from their employers to achieve their ambitions.” Gaenor Bagley, head of people at PwC and a member of the Opportunity Now advisory board, commented: “More UK women than ever may be working, but our research shows that the workplace isn’t working for women. Too often there is a disconnect between organisations’ policies and the actual experience of women at work. For example, despite the perception that flexible working helps women, it could actually be holding them back in many cases. While the decision to go part-time is often made for shortterm reasons, it seems to have a wider, long-term negative impact.

112

“We know women are confident and ambitious, but they have different goals to men. Until these goals are recognised as different, but valued equally with male priorities, workplaces will continue to disappoint and disillusion all but the most tenacious of women. To make real progress in supporting women’s careers, we need workplaces and a society that value women’s differences and support these aims. This means getting the basics, such as how people are assessed and rewarded at work, right.” Project 28-40 is the UK’s biggest ever study of women’s ambitions. The project surveyed 25,000 women and men to examine why the rate of progression slows for women aged 28-40 compared to their male counterparts, and to develop solutions for employers to develop and retain their talented female staff whilst enabling women and men to balance their careers with life outside work. Kathryn Nawrockyi, Director of Opportunity Now, added: “We’ve set out simple things that organisations can do to make work better for all their employees – men and women – and now it’s up to them to take action. This is a great opportunity for employers to radically reassess and to create modern working practices, more highly engaged employees and fair, diverse and inclusive workplaces.” The full report and recommendations are available via the Opportunity Now website. The research was undertaken in partnership with PwC. - See more at: www.opportunitynow.bitc.org.uk/ research/Project28-40Theresults

OFFICE LIFE

Go Green in the Office Apart from the basic fact that an office with plants looks better than an office without, a little greenery in the workplace can actually work wonders for staff performance and productivity!

They reduce stress:

Several scientific studies have shown that plants in the office can reduce stress. Buildings and office environments appear more calming and simply a nicer place to be when plants are present. They are more interesting, colourful and relaxing. The effects aren’t just psychological either; physiological effects such as lowered blood pressure are also proven benefits of a greener office.

Pothos: Arguably the easiest houseplant to grow. They’re known to help purify indoor air. Ease of care:

They improve productivity: Productivity is known to be improved in an environment where plants are present. Cognitive tasks, concentration and focus are all improved, therefore increasing productivity within the workforce. The higher level of concentration can be attributed to the plants ability to reduce excess carbon dioxide in the air.

They reduce sickness and absence: Introducing plants to an office environment has been reported to reduce absenteeism by up to 50%, and reduce minor illness by 30%.

Dracaena: Another easy to care for plant, great at reducing air pollutants! Ease of care:

They provide cleaner air to breathe: By introducing a ratio of 1 plant per 3 employees, air quality can be improved within the office. CO2 can be reduced by 50% as well as a reduction in the dust, bacteria and mould which would otherwise be inhaled by employees.

They reduce noise: One lesser known advantage of plants is their ability to reduce ambient noise within an office, as much as 5 decibels. Background noise, which could otherwise be distracting, is reduced allowing employees to concentrate on their work

They increase creativity: In one study,

They make you look good:

plants were seen to increase creativity by 15%.

It has been found that plants can reduce dry skin by 20%. This means we look healthier as well as feeling better!

OFFICE LIFE

WISH YOU WORKED HERE? Everybody knows the legend of the Google offices, a treasure trove of infinitely different rooms, some spacious and modern, others miniscule and retro. Fitted with custom-made tunnel slides which lead to fully-stocked kitchen diners, cushioned relaxation booths disguised as helicopters and hot air balloons, and even a stage for impromptu performances, it’s undisputedly a dream place of work. But it’s not the only company with a more than adequate office space...

INVENTIONLAND DESIGN FACTORY Inventionland is the corporate headquarters of Davidson Design & Development. Based in Pittsburgh in the USA, it’s a full blown indoor adventure, where employees can be set to work in anything from a tree house to a cave, all surrounded by ponds, trees and other man made “nature”. Whole divisions can be based in the company’s infamous “shipwreck”, with workers welcome to dip their toes in the (plastic) sharkinfested waters when struggling for inspiration.

OFFICE LIFE

LOCAL BOYS

Speaking of funky workplaces, Sheffield based software firm WANdisco offer unlimited holidays, twice weekly fruit deliveries and they have helter skelter!

URBAN OUTFITTERS Much like the brand’s high street stores, the Urban Outfitters head office looks perfectly dishevelled, based in a converted industrial building in Philadelphia. Full of exposed beams and paint-peeling pillars, its design is predictably minimal, kitted out with vintage fittings and fixtures which all contribute to its chosen “hipster”-style branding.

SELGASCANO ARCHITECTURE OFFICE Hidden deep within thick woodland, this office is every nature lover’s dream. Buried in the ground, with just its halftransparent roof poking out to allow for natural light, the interior is minimal, decked out with fuss-free white furniture and an abundance of open shelves, all topped off with a slick of citrusy fresh paint; truly eco-design at its best.

LEGO Tunnel slides, oddly shaped windows and strangely-angled ceilings combine to create the interior of the Lego offices in Denmark, where bright colours and illustrated walls convey the company’s ethos of fun. There’s plenty of obligatory super-sized Lego figures too (well, it’d be a shame not to, wouldn’t it?), dotted around the building to remind workers to “play on”.

ZYNGA Imagine a place where meetings take place in full-sized campervans; where you travel through LED-lit tunnels to get to lunch; where you spend your breaks in a games room, filled with vintage arcade games and a giant pool table. Chances are the place you’re picturing now isn’t far off the reality of the Zynga headquarters, where fun is always the order of the day.

CAPITA Gets Inmotion! Over 3000 employees from companies across South Yorkshire have given up their car in order to give the bus a go in an innovative new scheme by the Inmotion! Project.

Leading outsourcing company, Capita, has recently taken part in the free Busboost scheme provided by Inmotion!, which encourages employees to give up their cars in return for 28 days of free travel on any bus, tram or train in South Yorkshire. Capita’s work with Busboost has already seen 240 of its staff take part so far, with many benefits reported, including reduced stress levels and quicker journey times compared to driving. Safety, Health and Environment Manager for Capita, Chris Broadhead, said: “Many of our employees travel to work from different areas such as Barnsley, Pontefract, Rotherham and Sheffield, and, with limited car parking spaced available, we wanted to make people aware of the alternative travel options available. As a business, we take our employees’ health and wellbeing seriously, and the Busboost initiative has been a resounding success for the employees taking part.” He added: “It was really easy to get involved. The advisor did all the hard work, and was at the end of the phone if we ever needed support. They also provided us with a live departure feed that we display in the reception area, so our employees can walk to the bus stop just as their bus is due, so there is less waiting time.” 63% of Capita employees that took part in the Busboost scheme said they will continue to use public transport for most, or part, of their journey to and from work. employee, Brogan Curtis, said: “After I took part in the free trial, I sold my car and now use the bus regularly to get to and from work.”

Chris said: “I would encourage other businesses to get involved and give it a go. It’s a great opportunity to see whether public transport can work for you, and the feedback we’ve received from our employees has been extremely positive.” When a business gets involved, Busboost’s dedicated Travel Choice Advisors will initially review how travel to and from their organisation affects employees, before discussing how they could benefit from taking part in the project. They also provide toolkits tailored to the specific needs of participating businesses to help promote the scheme internally, as well as helping with the distribution of the tickets and further public transport information. To get involved, employees simply click on a link to complete a short online application form. Applicants that meet the criteria are then invited to take part in the free travel trial for 28 days before being asked to complete a survey at the end of 121

the offer period. As well as Busboost, businesses can also take advantage of a number of other Inmotion! Schemes, such as: eco-safe driver training for business efficiency and cost savings, access to discounted use of electric vehicles through the Plugged in South Yorkshire project, Cycleboost (which offers free bicycle hire, road skills training, bike maintenance and route planning advice) and Walkboost (which provides incentives, help, advice and organised walking groups). Car Tech Most cars now have a tech and accessories list as long your arm with built in sat-nav, bluetooth phone connectivity and reverse parking cameras. But in our opinion you can never have too much tech and so we’ve been on the hunt for a few additional gadgets to make your drive, safer, easier and a little bit more enjoyable. AlcoSense Elite: £59.99 This piece of tech could not only save your licence but also your life. The AlcoSense™ unit shows your level of intoxication in either μg/l (micrograms per liter of blood) or ‰ BAC (percent of blood alcohol content) and shows your reading in increments of 0.01. It will even alert you when you are near or over the drink drive limit.

Garmin Dash Cam: £199.99

Handpresso: £139.00

Reliable, Easy-to-use HD Driving Recorder with GPS. The Garmin dash cam stamps all footage with the time and location, whilst its inbuilt incident detection sensor automatically saves footage of collisions and incidents. It’s your witness that never blinks.

The ability to have a decent cup of coffee is a basic human right which is why the Handpresso is possibly our favourite piece of car tech ever. Handpresso Auto is perfectly adapted for drivers, and can be used in any vehicle with a 12V cigarette lighter socket, so say NO to sludgy services coffee and hello to a simply delicious creamy espresso!

DESIGN AWARD FOR

JAGUA R The Jaguar C-X17 has been honoured with an award for Concept Vehicle Interior Design at the Automotive Interiors Expo 2014 Awards. 126

With a judging panel that boasts some of the world's leading automotive journalists, the Automotive Interiors Expo Awards is now in its third year, and continues to cement its place as one of the most sought-after accolades within the automotive industry.

The C-X17 concept was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a design study to demonstrate the capabilities of Jaguar’s new advanced aluminum monocoque architecture, which will form the basis of the forthcoming XE sports saloon. Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum said: “I am delighted that the C-X17 has won the award. We worked hard to ensure that C-X17 had a cabin that was both innovative and hi-tech and yet also luxurious, stylish and timeless – in fact, it’s what we set out to achieve with the interior of every car that Jaguar makes, from the forthcoming XE sports saloon to the XF, XJ and F-TYPE.” Hosted at Automotive Interiors Expo 2014 in Stuttgart, the awards honour the world's finest designers, innovations and products, championing all aspects of automotive interior excellence and innovation.

Dean Slavnich, Editor of Engine Technology International and Co-chairman of the awards, said: “The C-X17 takes interactivity to a new level. The judges recognised how its concept interior is able to blend high-end interactive technology with premium traditionally crafted materials. The unique Interactive Surface Console brings interior automotive design right into the modern age, running the length of the car’s centre tunnel, and made up of a series of interconnecting touch-screens, the Surface Console connects rear passengers with the driver and front seat passengers via a secure in-car Wi-Fi network, so occupants can upload pictures, video and sound files from their mobile devices and share them with their fellow passengers as well as on all social media channels. “Enabling sharing, both in terms of technology and information, between the occupants of the C-X17, the Interactive Surface Console puts as much focus on the rear compartment as on the front and immerses all four passengers in a unified multisensory experience.”

Since Ewan and Charlie went the long way round and down, the sales of Adventure bikes has boomed. These sturdy machines account for a large proportion of new bike sales worldwide, and for good reason. Anyone wanting to tour around the world, Europe, Great Britain or even just to the local Sainsbury’s for supplies, needs a bike that can cope with luggage and possibly a pillion. It also has the ability to eat up the miles with speed and comfort and have a decent range per tank and add the ability to have a great deal of fun when the roads get twisty. Now I need to say that I am a big fan of Adventure style bikes and have a particular soft spot for BMW as I own the last of the old R1200GS. The bikes tested are the New BMW R1200GS LC in TE spec and BMW R1200 GS ADV also in TE spec. These are the bikes that I would, or am considering swapping to and although there are other offerings from Triumph, Honda and Yamaha they didn’t make my short list.

MOTORING

FIRST UP; THE R1200 LC TE

Weather protection was extremely good for a shorty like me and the screen has a clever one handed adjustment mechanism so it can be altered on the move easily and safely. Comfort is adequate I had the low seat option although I didn’t really need it as the floor was easily within reach.

I didn’t pick a good day for it as it was raining, hard. The sort of rain that comes down then goes back up six inches before coming to rest. But not to worry as the BMW has some very tricky traction control settings, ABS and suspension. Without being a techno bore Electronic suspension adjustment has been around for a while now as has traction control and ABS but in conjunction with Sachs, BMW have developed a semi active suspension system with ‘modes’ to cope with the conditions or your preferred riding style of the moment; Rain Mode –how appropriate, Road Mode, Dynamic Mode and Enduro Mode.

There were a few niggles in my opinion, The gear box, which BMW claim to have improved since launch still wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked and there was a noticeable lurch forward when engaging first gear. According to forums for this bike there have been complaints for this and is still the number one moan from early owners -but in my opinion it was tolerable and no reason not to buy this bike. The heated grips didn’t feel as hot as the ones I currently have and the switch gear felt a bit cheap somehow.

The TE model also comes as standard with a drive computer which can display fuel consumption, range, engine oil and ambient air temperature and the status of the tyre pressure monitoring system, it even tells the time

MY VERDICT It’s a lovely bike and was a Bike Magazine bike of the year but for me it didn’t feel like a GS but maybe that’s the point!

MOVING ON TO THE BIG BOY R1200 GS ADVENTURE This bike has some serious road presence -it’s massive! It has a 30L fuel tank, stands much taller than its sister and is clearly aimed at more ‘adventurous’ jaunts. You sit more on top of this bike as opposed to being in it and what a commanding view you have dominating the road, looking down on cars, vans and some smaller lorries as you pass (and you will pass.)

R1200 GS ADVENTURE

SO WHAT IS IT LIKE TO RIDE? Very good, the power delivery is smooth for a twin opposed engine and propels the bike to some highly illegal speeds with no fuss or drama (on a private road near me M’Lud) and to be fair I had to take a second look at the speedo to realise just how fast this thing is and how quickly it gets you there without realising it. All that said it does it in a more ‘revvy’ way than BMW riders of old are used to.

R1200 LC TE

The handling of this bike is very good. Although slightly heavier than its predecessor it somehow manages to feel quite a bit lighter, the semi active suspension which adjusts constantly to the road is surprising in its effectiveness although not quite the magic carpet ride that it may claim to be. I obviously didn’t get to push the bike anywhere near its limits due to the wet stuff but I do believe that with its power and poise in the corners it will give many a 600 sports bike a fright on a Sunday thrash. 130

The bike goes the same as the LC which to recap, is exceptionally fast -and a heavier fly wheel seems somehow to give it a feeling of more grunt which I liked -a lot. As for handling, the Adventure has taller, longer travel suspension by about 2 inches and feels softer or more ‘wafty’ for it. The same suspension trickery has more to cope with due to this increased travel but manages to do so admirably. The ADV has all the same modes as the standard GS which operate in exactly the same way and like its smaller sibling this bike would or could frighten the ‘insert own word here’ out of a weekend power ranger.

IN MY OPINION Of the two BMWs this one is my pick of the pair. The gear box felt better and the bike just felt so right despite its obvious bulk and weight -which it hides very well. In short, this bike makes you look and feel like a trip across the Andes is your next holiday. Rick Midgley
