joanna figueroa First collection – Buttercream & Figs in 2004 Favorite Quilt Market memory – There are so many but they all include the following: good Moda friends, good food, a lot of laughter and some shop talk! Favorite pre-cut – Jelly Rolls - because they stretch my design brain and challenge me. I have to work in a very specific parameter, there are limitations. But when Moda created the Jelly Roll, I made a commitment to working as hard as I could to design jelly roll quilts that didn’t look like they were made with long 2.5” strips. Years sewing and quilting – While I learned to sew when I was fairly young, I didn’t start quilting until the first year I was married, so that would be 23 years.

Who taught you to sew – I taught myself from a book. That first one was bad really, really bad. I decided to do a small log cabin but didn’t know that I had to actually cut pieces that would fit around the block so instead I just sewed and then chopped, sewed and then chopped. Let’s just say that no two blocks were the same size. I made it work but it was definitely not pretty!

DEB STRAIn First collection – Welcome to My Garden & Friends in 1996. I had two debut at the same time! First time you saw your name on the selvage – Thrilled beyond words! Favorite Quilt Market memory – There are so many! I love dancing at the Moda parties where I can’t embarass my adult children with my dancing! I loved taking my Grandmother to Fall Market in Houston to show her my fabric. It’s been a thrill to see the size of the Moda booth grow, and it’s a treat to see so many friends twice a year. My most favorite Market memory was seeing the timeline quilt Josh Dunn made for Moda’s 40th Anniversary listing the current designers and how long they had been with the company.

What a pleasure it is to introduce you to Sarah’s Story. Once again, I’ve found inspiration within three antique quilts in my collection dating from the 1830-1840s and from Sarah Josepha Hale (1788-1879). Sarah was a poet, an author, and editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book for 40 years. It was in Godey’s that the hexagon design first appeared in an American periodical in 1835. In her day, Sarah was the leading influencer of fashion and all matters concerning the keeping of a home. Everything from furnishings to cooking, sewing the latest fashions, hand-crafts, sheet music and more were part of each issue. Sarah advocated the values of education and women in the workforce, and Godey’s published original works by American authors, including Sarah’s poem “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. She was largely responsible for President Lincoln proclaiming Thanksgiving a national holiday. While Sarah’s influences and trend setting ideas offer inspiration for the line, it is the wide range of prints found in my antique quilts that complete Sarah’s Story.
