evolvinG Graciously having exhibited as a new label at Moda’s first-ever edition of Adorned, eliza gracious has evolved alongside the exhibition through four seasons of change. Christina williams recounts how it all began.

P

erfecting a collection in shimmering metallics with contemporary design twists, the creators of jewellery brand eliza gracious sought only one final detail; the perfect platform from which to launch their fledgling label. At the same time, Moda was focusing on developing Adorned; the dedicated boutique area for niche accessories brands. e synergy between the two was undeniable and, four seasons on, eliza gracious remains a loyal exhibitor at Adorned. “we felt that having a section that offered a point of difference from the main show could only be a good thing for us as a relatively new brand, and that has proved to be the case,” says Mark hale, co-founder of eliza gracious. “Customers know where they can find us, and many have commented positively about how refreshing Adorned is.” eliza gracious has flourished so much that this season will see the brand arrive at Adorned with its most extensive

collection to date. Maintaining the label’s style hallmarks of distinctive and intricate design with a contemporary edge, the latest range builds upon its most popular styles with extended lines across its necklaces, bracelets and earrings. “e collection has gone from strength to strength every season,” says hale. “while we continue to run our best-selling lines, i am always interested to know what our customers are looking for and take this into consideration when planning the new ranges.” positioning the brand in line with buyer demand has led to an ever-growing portfolio of 600 stockists nationwide, many of which were secured at Adorned over the seasons. “Adorned is a smaller show and i find it to be a more intimate experience,” says hale. “we can spend more time with each and every customer, from the independent fashion retailers to the larger store buyers. we are looking forward to having a continued presence at the show because it gives customers confidence.”

Other brands joining them Eliza Gracious the area for boutique and innovative labels are (le to right) Miss Milly, newcomer natalie Inger Jewellery and bag specialist Anh & Art.

o address the issues that women face, the group went right back to basics and began by considering the anatomy of the breast, which is where all the problems start! breast movement occurs when women move because of the weak natural support in the breasts. is breast movement can lead to a number of negative consequences including breast pain (which affects half the female population in the uk), irreversible breast sag due to repeated loading on the structures of the breast, a reluctance to participate in physical activity, embarrassment, and it changes the way women move. recent research by the group showed one in five women identified their breasts as a barrier to exercise. At the university of portsmouth, the world leading research group is working to understand more about the breast and how bras can alleviate pain, breast sag and embarrassment. Since 2006, the group has developed its scientific testing methods, which establish breast movement in three directions (forwards/backwards, side/side, and up/down) to determine the effectiveness of different types of bras, alongside additional measures. e research group emphasises that product success is dependent upon many factors, including consumer opinions on comfort and design, fit, materials used, aesthetics, marketing, and not just on bounce reduction capabilities. products that are assessed and validated based on published scientific methods give women peace of mind when purchasing a product. e more scientific data there is on the breast support requirements for different groups of women, the more appropriate the products will be. 2014 has seen the launch of two exciting opportunities in

collaboration with the research group in breast health, firstly a one-day educational workshop titled “e science behind breasts and bras” and, secondly, three new off-the-shelf product tests, the bronze, Silver and gold packages. e one-day workshop offers the chance to expand your knowledge and understanding of the science behind breasts and bras. Attendees will learn about breast anatomy, the problems with breasts and the science behind how the breast moves. e workshop also presents the latest cutting-edge research in breast biomechanics, breast support (both sports bras and everyday bras) and bra fit. is is a fantastic opportunity to learn from the world leaders in this area. Attendees from the first workshop commented that the workshop was “an excellent mix of interaction and presentation” and they found the workshop to be “informative and most of all good fun”. e bronze (bra Testing package), Silver (bra evaluation package), and gold (bra development package) packages have been developed to support the lingerie industry during the different stages of product development, from initial sketches and prototype testing, to validating a product for a new product launch. ese packages have been developed to enable the lingerie industry to join forces with the research group and gain scientific underpinnig and validation for their products. professor Joanna Scurr, who leads the research group, says, “Scientific testing should be a fundamental aspect of the product development process, we must understand the requirements of a product before we can successfully develop a product to meet those demands. our research originates from our scientific understanding of the requirements of a bra.”

The reTurn of coPPafeel! Coppafeel!, the breast cancer awareness charity with a twist, is set to make a welcome return to Moda lingerie & Swimwear this season. e Moda team caught up with founder kris hallenga to find out what she and her merry band of “boobettes” have been up to since february. Your journey has taken you in lots of new directions since the last show, what has been your highlight of this year so far? is year really feels like we’ve achieved a lot in a very short time! is has been helped hugely by the documentary i made with october films called dying to live, which aired on bbC3 in March. it’s since been repeated on bbC1 due to its popularity, which has been mind-blowing! we’ve had an incredible response to the film – the best messages i’ve received have been from young people and teachers, telling me they’d played the film in their pShe lessons in school and felt incredibly inspired by it! we’ve also had a number of emails recently from young women telling us that our work has lead them to be diagnosed with breast cancer at an early stage. Although it’s always sad to hear more cases of people being diagnosed, knowing that it’s been caught at an early, treatable stage gives me great reassurance that what we do at Coppafeel! is saving lives. it was really important to me to show the life of someone living with cancer as opposed to dying or surviving. My cancer will never be cured but that doesn’t mean it has to define me. i didn’t want to hide anything as it was important to me to show that with the good days come some really crap, dark days. having cancer is devastating not only for the person diagnosed with it but it has detrimental effects on people close to them too. it really is a film that portrays everything – warts and all! How many people have you helped with your boob check reminder initiative, do you have a target you would like to reach? with our monthly text messages, our growing social media audience, our shower sticker reminders and other communication initiatives, we remind over 60,000 people each month to check their boobs. is number grows daily and with our Summer boob Tour of uk festivals just beginning, we intend to up this number considerably by the end of the year. Festifeel has been a great success for the charity, what is it like working with Fearne Cotton on the festival? She’s the best. we couldn’t ask for a more genuinely lovely patron to help us with festifeel. She has some talented friends in the music industry who come to play for us. Many of them are up-and-coming artists who will be hitting the same festival scene that we do! She also loves a good dance and a party, like us – so it’s fab to have a good excuse to enjoy ourselves whilst raising vital funds and awareness. e Uni Boob teams and festival tours are a great way to get your message out to a younger audience, is it becoming more important to raise awareness of breast checks among all age groups? Absolutely. Although breast cancer in young people remains rare, it’s not impossible. we’re planting a seed at a young age, encouraging life-long healthy habits so that when young people

reach the age at which they’re more likely to be diagnosed, they know their bodies well and are more likely to detect any changes. we’re empowering young people now in order to save lives in the future. How much of a role did you play in putting together the Wolf & moon jewellery range for Coppafeel? hannah is a very talented lady so we were pretty confident she’d come up with something beautiful for us! we filled her in on our brand and told her what we liked and thought would go down well with our supporters and she worked her creative magic on the collection. we’re really pleased with it. You recently spoke in parliament as part of the #rethinkcancer campaign, can you tell us more about what you are hoping to achieve? one in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives. To us it seems only right that we should equip young people and teachers with the tools and knowledge to make good lifestyle choices to try and prevent them becoming that one in three. i wish someone had told me at school about breast cancer and what i should be looking and feeling for. if they had, i might be in a different position today. we recently ran a pilot campaign at a school in South london where we asked the young people there to tell us how they wanted to be educated about cancer. e results showed what a great difference we can make and how we can go about it in a non-scary, creative way and introduce it to the normal school day. we know the people that can make this happen are our Mps so it made sense for us to be in parliament to make our case. e response was great but we’ve got a long way to go. What can moda visitors expect from you at this season’s show? A lot of boob chat! Since our last trip to Moda, we’ve had a lot more lingerie companies come on board with our bra hijack campaign - our plea to the lingerie world to add our boob-checking labels into their bras to act as another great reminder to check regularly. we currently have six brands on board and it’s great to see our labels appearing in our bras! we’ll be asking Moda visitors to tell us #whatnormalfeelslike as part of our campaign to expand the nation’s vocab about boobs. what one word would you use to describe your boobs? is is a question i recently put to ladies in london and unsurprisingly the answers all related to size and shape. we want to change this with our new campaign, which we’ve just launched on our Summer boob Tour of uk’s festivals. Meet Kris and the Coppafeel! team at Moda Lingerie & Swimwear in Hall 17 this season.

Britain Made in

Make it british is among the companies campaigning to put britain back on the manufacturing map and founder kate hills, fresh from her inaugural Meet the Manufacturer event, will be on hand at Moda this season to discuss how and why homegrown goods are becoming big business. we spoke to kate ahead of the show to bring you an exclusive insight into the world and work of this great british champion.

in britain we once had some of the finest leatherworkers, tailors, shoemakers, knitters and weavers in the world, and yet over the last couple of decades much of our fashion and textiles industry has been taken abroad. but all is not lost – in the last few years we have really started to see a revival of british manufacturing and there are now more and more companies making in the uk again. “is renewed interest in british manufacturing is in part being driven by the customer – who wants to buy a heritage brand unless there is real provenance behind it? And many of the brands that make in the uk have a great story to tell about the history of their products or their businesses, which is something

that gives them a unique selling point. “it’s not just the big heritage brands that are supporting british manufacturing either– smaller companies are also launching new labels with a view to making everything in the uk right from the start. Many of these brands cite the fact that producing locally enables them to make smaller order quantities and react more quickly to customer demands, as well as the fact that you can’t beat making in the uk if you want to create a genuine british brand. “So if you want to buy into brands that have a story to tell look out for those which are genuinely made in britain.

Moving forward from the familiar nautical trend this season, influence is drawn from the likes of the Italian riviera and the South of France – expect premium finishes and high-quality fabrics. Of course, the core of the trend, the red, white and blue colour palette, is still paramount, except with tones soer, almost vintage in finish. MWB editor victoria Jackson looks at the stand-out menswear trend for this season. German lifestyle label Brax executes this theme perfectly, with a series of coastal classics with a combination of stripes and block colours. Outerwear label Jupiter, meanwhile, features shimmering ripstop fabrics on the maritime segment of its Spring/Summer 2015 collection, which comprises sportive blousons through to long-line jackets, while menswear label Skopes continues its return to a smarter style of dressing, even with more casual pieces like its stone wind cheater, featuring navy and red lining and piping. The luxe maritime theme meanwhile, continues through shirting at German label Olymp, with various blue and aquatic nuances sitting next to beige and strawberry accents – three key shades for the season.
