Today surprisingly more Indians want remote control feature on their phones

martphone users in India, which is among the fastest growing smartphone markets, expressed a keen interest in remote control features, with 84% of respondents saying they were an ‘important’ factor in their decision to purchase a new smartphone, just behind China (89%) and South Korea (85%). In the US, 52% said it was an important factor in their next smartphone.

LCATEL ONETOUCH POP 8S tablet comes with a compelling 1.2 GHz Quad Core processor, encased in

a slim 7.9 mm design featuring an 20.32 cm (8”) screen with 1280X800 WXGA, IPS display. Weighing only 327 grams, the POP 8S runs Android 4.4 Kitkat on a 1GB RAM with 8GB storage, expandable up to 64GB. The ALCATEL ONETOUCH POP 8S will be available in full black finish. This clearly shows today India not only one biggest smart phone markets, but also more Indians want high-tech capabilities on their phones. Life is getting smarter day-by-day. And we see more vendors loading their phones with remote capable apps. Next development we covered in this issue is the Prime Minister’s Make In India program that moved one level ahead: Now it is no longer a slogan, it is now being practiced. Several vendors have already started their manufacturing and assembling plants in India. Though it is initially more on assembling side, in the coming years it is expected to move more towards manufacturing. Make in India not only brings benefits to the vendors, it also benefits the nation in several other ways like providing more employment to the locals and preventing the flow of money outwards, which is often a big drain our foreign currency.

irreverent and colorful. We believe that what makes technology smart is what you can do with it rather than what it can do.

Chrome’s rise since its 2008 launch to become the world’s dominant browser simultaneously elevated Pichai’s reputation, and he started overseeing apps like Gmail. He later became head of Android, Google’s mobile-phone OS. Pichai aided his ascent by never trying to steal the limelight and advancing his agenda through quiet advocacy, according to former colleagues.

Bharti Airtel got undue benefits by miscalculating revenues, says draft CAG report A draft Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report has stated that Bharti Airtel received undue benefits of about Rs 145 billion by miscalculating its revenues. According to the report, Bharti Airtel and its subsidiary, Bharti Hexacom, registered significant abnormal gains in the period between 2006-07 and 2009-10 by under reporting the revenues and through corporate restructuring. The report has estimated a gain of above Rs 440 billion to the operator on account of corporate restructuring. The report has also stated that Bharti Airtel successively transferred infrastructure assets to its subsidiaries at zero value. Bharti Airtel and Bharti Hexacom have been estimated to secure financial benefits of Rs 109.8 billion through investment revaluation and Rs 336.18 billion through changes in the market value of shares received. The report has also noted that Bharti Airtel under-reported its revenues and license fee in the company’s primary books of accounts (trial balances) and profit and loss (P&L) account, especially the revenues earned from

providing pre-paid, post-paid and roaming services, foreign exchange deals and infrastructure sharing. The operator also suppressed income from investments, interest and miscellaneous sources in calculating adjusted gross revenues (AGR) while computing license fees (LF) and spectrum usage charges (SUC). The LF and SUC were not paid on the total amount deducted from revenue on account of commission/margin to the distributor/agents/franchisee/ dealer, which stood at around Rs 10.71 billion. Further, about Rs 6.11 billion was deducted on account of free airtime. These issues, along with others, have led to a total miscalculation of revenues at about Rs 145 billion. The draft report has not incorporated the views of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Once the CAG draft report is finalized, it will be tabled in Parliament.

odafone Business Services (VBS), the enterprise arm of Vodafone India, has collaborated with Diabetacare to launch dCare SmartT, a device that helps people manage diabetes better. An industry first, dCare SmartT, is a GSM SIM enabled wireless glucometer that empowers people to proactively monitor their blood sugar levels which is powered by Vodafone’s Machine to Machine (M2M) embedded cellular technology. The device transmits blood sugar results to a secure Diabetacare server, where they are constantly monitored by Diabetes Specialist Clinicians at the Diabetacare`s Diabetes Management Centre (DMC). In case of any abnormal blood glucose readings, both the patient and kin receive an alert/call with expert advice from the DMC immediately. dCare SmartT is powered by Vodafone’s Machine to Machine (M2M) embedded cellular technology. It is paired with the back-end clinical servers which connect directly to the electronic medical record system, wherein access is given to patients and their caregivers to keep them informed and better manage the condition. Nick Gliddon, Director - Vodafone Business Services says, “Vodafone is renowned globally for being a leader in M2M solutions and is driving the Internet of Things (IoT) by connecting machines, devices and objects to the internet, turning them into ‘intelligent’ assets that communicate with the world around them globally for more than 20 years. Leveraging our global expertise, we are the first telecom service provider to offer the M2M service platform in the Indian market today. Vodafone’s M2M Solution for Diabetacare allows data to be

securely uploaded to a central server and is then accessed remotely by multiple parties. This Diabetacare deployment is a reflection of our strong, successful and differentiated approach to M2M in India. There is a huge opportunity in this country and we have the capability to maintain over 10 billion SIMs in our platform. We are confident of growing this business further, especially in segments like healthcare.” Sharing his views on the initiative and launch of dCare Smart, Dr. Sanjiv Agarwal, Founder & Managing Director, Diabetacare said, “We looked at alternatives but, for me, Vodafone’s M2M solution is ahead of the game. Beyond the technology, Vodafone was able to demonstrate a real problem-solving attitude. Vodafone’s global M2M solutions will help Diabetacare fulfil its plans to ramp up deployments to 100,000 users across multiple locations. Diabetacare is a mainstream proposition and the service is priced to make it affordable. Vodafone’s scale and global coverage means the business needs just one supplier, fully managed from a single platform. It means Diabetacare is ready to respond quickly to growth opportunities worldwide.” Diabetes is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease. In 2000, India (31.7 million) topped the world with the highest number of people with diabetes. It is predicted that by 2030 diabetes may afflict up to 79.4 million individuals in India. According to experts the prevalence of diabetes is predicted to double globally from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030 with a maximum increase in India.

THE GAME THAT TEACHES DOCTORS HOW TO COMMuNICATe BeTTeR wITh PATIeNTS

I

f you or a family member has ever had a serious medical problem, you know how important it is to have doctors with good communication skills. They should be able to explain their diagnoses clearly and describe the procedures they propose using terms you can understand, and they should listen to your concerns and treat you with courtesy and respect. However, studies show physicians tend to overestimate the effectiveness of their bedside manners. In their defense, doctors point out that they have limited insight into how they come across to patients and lack feedback mechanisms to help them.

To teach communications skills to medical personnel, a trio of researchers at the Toulouse Institute of Computer Science Research in France have come up with a video game. The game, at the prototype stage, relies on traditional medical consultation scenarios and the latest e-health technologies. Their article, ‘Design of a Serious Game in Training Nonclinical Skills for Professionals in the Health Care Area,’ was presented at the 2014 IEEE Third International Conference on Serious Games and Applications for Health and is now available in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The authors are IEEE Member, Remi Bastidée, a profes-

sor of computer science at the Université Champollion, in Albi; Jing Guo, a Ph.D. student in computer science and technology at Toulouse Institute; and Nicolas Singer, a professor of engineering with the ISIS School of Engineering, in Castres. As in most games, there’s a story line, and there are goals, challenges, the awarding of points and rewards. The game runs on a Web server and presents preprogrammed questions for the player to answer. The player chooses her answers from a computer-generated list of multiple-choice responses. Right now it’s all in French, but translations to other languages could come in the future. COMMUNICATION MODULE The game is targeted at general practitioners and medical students doing internships in general medicine. The story line is that of a new doctor fresh out of medical school, referred to as ‘the player,’ who has just set up a practice. The player can choose a female or male avatar. There are also virtual non-player characters such as patients, office staff members and other doctors. Medical experts, including physicians, educators and psychologists, developed the rules of the game. These determine if actions taken by the player have beneficial or detrimental effects on a patient. The researchers also worked with general practitioners who teach medical students and supervise interns. A trio of researchers from France developed this video game prototype, which provides feedback to general practitioners and medical students on how they communicate with patients. Image: Remi Bastidée, Jing Guo & Nicolas Singer The game includes three modules: communications, electronic health records, and telemedicine. The player’s first activity is to conduct a consultation session with a new male patient in his 50s who has type 2 diabetes and wants his prescription renewed. The session has four phases. In the first, the player prepares for the session, greets the patient, introduces herself and identifies the reasons for the consultation. The next phase concerns gathering information, with or without a physical exam. The third consists of providing a treatment plan and explaining it to the patient, making sure he understands what is expected. In the last phase, the player must summarize the session for the patient, make the next appointment and say goodbye. Other activities introduced along the way may include having to answer a phone or adding to a patient’s electronic health record in the EHR module. At every step, the player chooses a preprogrammed question or action from among those suggested by the game engine and spelled out on the screen. The researchers call these general steps taken during consultation microsequences. The patient responds to what the player says or does with his own set of preprogrammed responses. Completing the microsequences advances the player to the next phase. At the end of each phase, a screen summarizes the actions the player has taken and identifies any incorrect actions—or wrong answers selected—along with the correct ones. Since no two patients are alike, to make the game more enjoyable, the developers created patients with different medical histories, diseases and personality traits. For traits, the patient can be confident or aggressive. Each trait influences certain attributes of the patient’s sentences, thus changing behavior. The player selects a patient profile and a topic to discuss. Actions taken by the doctor during the consultation can affect the patient’s behavior. To deal with this, the game proposes different sentences so players learn how to adapt their own language accordingly. Each sentence reflects a set of attributes such as politeness, clarity and empathy. When it is the patient’s turn to respond to the doctor,

the game chooses a sentence according to the patient’s profile. For example, if the patient likes to talk a lot, his sentence may be long and not directly relevant to the topic at hand. The doctor then must decide what action to take; participating in irrelevant conversations earns the player negative feedback, so players can learn to adapt their language. The developers addressed complaints from doctors about the lack of a feedback mechanism to gauge their bedside manner and how it affects the patient. The researchers provide a gauge by reflecting stress levels in the virtual patient’s facial expressions. How a player handles a patient’s stress is one of the key elements of the game, according to the researchers. E-HEALTH TECHNOLOGY The past decade has seen the implementation of ehealth records in hopes of improving the quality of health care and reducing costs. But the success of EHRs depends on the medical professionals using them knowledgably and integrating them into their practices. “Our game presents an overview of what can be done with EHRs and how they can make both patients’ and doctors’ lives easier,” the researchers say. “As e-health systems, computers and smartphones become common in people’s daily lives, they have to be considered because of their many advantages over traditional education.” Players gain access to the modules for EHRs and telemedicine when they take certain actions during a consultation. For example, choosing to review a patient’s medical history opens up an EHR module. The module presents the patient’s medical history, and the player can add information obtained during the consultation, which the game engine then summarizes. In this module, a written tutorial explains the reasons for using an EHR as well as the laws that protect the privacy and confidentiality of such records and the steps doctors need to take to secure the integrity and availability of information in an EHR system. The need to consult with a colleague in another location or schedule an appointment for a patient in another city gives a player access to the telemedicine module, which is still being developed. According to Guo, one of the ideas here is to highlight the variety of devices that a doctor can use, such as Web cameras and remote measurement instruments. SCORING THE GAME Because this is a role-playing strategy game, several indicators are used to compute different scores. One score reflects the confidence level the virtual patient has with the player. The researchers also developed what they call a ‘familiarity value’ that measures the player’s knowledge of EHRs and telemedicine. After reaching certain point levels, medals are awarded each time one of the four phases is completed. NEXT STEPS The game prototype, still under development, is not yet ready for testing. For example, it has yet to be enhanced with more-intelligent virtual patients, giving the player more scenarios to deal with. The developers can’t say when their prototype will be complete. “A good serious game requires a great amount of effort by a multidisciplinary team, and development phases can be very long,” points out Guo.

“There are at least 14 smartphone brands currently that include remote control, and we are working with another 10 which should launch shortly. The Peel Smart Remote has become the most popular app globally taking advantage of IR capabilities, with more than 115 million registered users who have generated over 100 billion remote commands to date. While Apple so far has chosen not to include an IR port on any of its competing phones or tablets, two in five iPhone users surveyed said they would be interested in the same remote capabilities enjoyed by Android users. Peel makes it easy for Indian consumers to switch to a smartphone remote because it works with all popular brands of TVs and air-conditioners sold in India, and 600 settop boxes, including those from Airtel, Tata Sky, Dish TV, Hathway, DEN and Siti Cable. For Indian consumers, Peel features TV listings

from WhatsOnIndia. India is one of the fastest growing markets for Peel with users doubling every six months. The use of smartphones to control the home is expected to continue to increase in popularity as more consumers add Internet connected household devices such as thermostats, plugs and lighting. Many believe that remote control will emerge as one of the valuable use cases driving the adoption of smart watches as well. Brands with IR currently are: Samsung, HTC, Xolo, ZTE, TCL, Xiaomi, LG, Vodaphone, Huawei, Lenovo, Celkon, Karbonn, Panasonic, Alcatel and OneTouch.” It is actually quite easy to implement IR. Peel provides a ‘full stack’ solution, which includes our SmartIR(TM) “no-chip” firmware solution and required hardware, like the IR blaster LED, the Peel Smart Remote app and cloud services to provision IR codes and local TV programming guide. All the phone distributor has to do is tell their manufacturer to cut a hole in the case. We have retrofitted an existing phone with IR capabilities in as little as three weeks. The cost per phone is typically US$ 0.40-0.50 (40 to 50 cents). Bala Krishnan clarifies, “Any Android (or Apple if they choose in the future) device can support IR. The use case for universal remote control is very strong in countries like India where it can be used for controlling appliances such as air conditioners, heaters and ceiling fans, along with entertainment devices such as TVs, audio systems, DVD players and set-top boxes. “We are already working with or talking to every major and minor phone manufacturer and distributor in the world, including all Indian brands. Smartphones can now enable you to operate your refrigerators, TVs, airconditioners of your home while sitting in a restaurant, your office or anywhere. Over the next few years, I believe, we will see thousands of sensor-based products tied to features or apps in our handsets, making smartphones that one device, the command centre of all our digital interactions. It is therefore

obvious that just focusing on specific features like camera quality, free apps or location based services will make it even more difficult, with the consumers expecting top notch experiences across all these areas. If brands want to stay relevant in a cluttered market, they will have to break the mould, evolve and shape their marketing strategies to differentiate and empower consumers with a luxurious lifestyle. The only way for companies to do that is to realize that it’s time to ‘stop selling devices and start selling lifestyle.’”

It enables you to control every aspect of your Zenfone from your computer. You can use your PC’s keyboard to compose messages or manage your app screens with the mouse. Share Link: It lets you share your ZenFone photos, movies, contacts and other content quickly and easily. Just choose a friend’s device to zap your stuff across- effortlessly! Party Link: It hands you the freedom to share your ZenFone pictures automatically. You can create a group with your friends in this Party Link and share whatever pictures are taken. How do you look at growing importance of smartphones in India and the ever growing market? India is a very attractive and price sensitive market and there is a certain section of consumers who are extremely technology savvy and are looking for innovative and power-packed devices. The way consumers choose and buy smartphones is continuously evolving, which means you need to have a diverse portfolio of products and price points to appeal to a wide range of consumers. The current trend indicates that smartphones are increasing seen as camera phones by many professionals. Innovation is at its best among brands competing to capture the flourishing market that stood at over $276 billion in 2014. Thanks to the latest progression in camera technology, you will find camera phones as good as or even better than some of the popular cameras available in the market. specifically for the needs of the today’s customers who is increasingly using the smartphone for a number of functions like work, emails, entertainment, social media, etc. The OPPO VOOC Flash Charge is capable of charging the phone’s battery from zero to 75% in only 30 minutes which gives consumers 2 hours talk time in a short span of time.

What are the challenges and opportunities you face and see in India? The Indian smartphone market is growing at a fast pace. We believe that smartphone market share would boost rapidly in the coming years. With the advent of affordable smartphones intended for the Indian market and increasingly low-cost data connectivity options, more people are shifting to smartphones and mobile Internet. The Indian rural market is catching up fast and we will cater our best to the affordable budget smartphone segment and provide the best service and quality to the people. In this price-sensitive market, there is a certain section of consumers who are extremely technology savvy and looking for innovative and power-packed devices. We have already introduced products in the price range of INR 6500 to INR 42999 which gives many options to Indian consumers. A recent budget Smartphone launched in India is Neo 5 inheriting the distinguishing design and features in an extraordinarily stylish frame aiming at the mid-range market. The smartphone market in India is constantly evolving and we intend to reach across sections through our budget smartphones. We are overwhelmed with the response we got from Indian smartphone users, and we look forward to expand our horizon in the Indian market. OPPO being a global brand has established well itself in other parts of the world and we are determined to be an integral part of the society at large.

We have seen great products from OPPO; what can we expect next big thing form you? Whenever we globally launch new devices; they are soon launched in India as well. We will continue to receive great response from consumers who have always been supportive and liked our products.

We premeditated to proceed as per the understanding of what our users are thinking, feeling and doing – what they value. The key part is what India customers’ mind and ASUS is determined to touch customers’ heart in terms of incredible product, incredible design, incredible quality and incredible service.

How is ASUS performing in India? ASUS has been focused towards Smartphones, Touch notebooks, Ultrabooks, Tablets, Phablets and Notebooks. I think this second generation product will also stand the test of many markets and I am confident that it will be loved by the consumers in India as well. India has been one of the most important markets for us. We want to bring the best innovation and the most affordable price to you.

ccording to a survey conducted by Kaspersky Lab in conjunction with B2B International, around half of the consumers surveyed also use their devices for work. However, only 1 in 10 is seriously concerned about keeping work information safe should cybercriminals gain access to their devices. One way or another, many employees of large and medium-sized companies use personal mobile devices for work. 36% of respondents store work files on them, and 34% keep work-related email messages. Sometimes, more confidential information can also be found on users’ devices, such as passwords to corporate email accounts (18%), networks or VPNs (11%). • BYOD integration should be regarded as a specific project; this is especially true for large businesses. Every last detail of the integration process should be designed beforehand; and this should ideally include an infrastructure audit, a design stage and a pilot implementation. • To effectively protect mobile devices, it is important to use a comprehensive solution that ensures security across the entire corporate network, not one that focuses only on mobile devices. Without this, compatibility problems may arise and create extra work for system administrators. • Managing mobile devices in a large business requires additional skills over and above those demanded by routine system administration. It is worth ensuring there are appropriately qualified IT security specialists on the team. These can provide centralized management for all mobile devices within the corporate network, ensure that all mobile applications are installed, removed and/or updated via dedicated corporate portals, and regulate data access levels and employee privileges.

• Most importantly, the business needs to develop robust scenarios for how to remove personal devices from the corporate network if they are lost or stolen, or if an employee leaves the company. A procedure should be developed to remove confidential corporate data from these devices and block access to the corporate network.

Despite these risks, a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) business model offers many benefits to organizations, even to those enterprises that have a great deal of confidential information. For example, easy access to corporate communications and applications alongside personal data and activities means that employees can see and manage tasks faster and more effectively. However, to keep the business and any proprietary data secure, the integration of BYOD into the IT infrastructure must be implemented responsibly by employers. Kaspersky Lab’s

Kaspersky Security for Mobile was developed specifically to meet these requirements. It ensures the protection of corporate information on users’ devices, helps to manage mobile applications and devices, protects users from malware and other cyberthreats, and allows for remote management of devices if they are lost or stolen. Xiaomi revealed its ‘Make in India’ plans: Redmi 2 Prime is Xiaomi’s first smartphone to be manufactured in India

L

eading smartphone company Xiaomi announced that it will now manufacture its devices locally in India, in a show of commitment to Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Xiaomi revealed its ‘Make in India’ plans at a special event recently in Visakhapatnam, located in the state of Andhra Pradesh, in the presence of Honorable Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu and Shri Amitabh Kant, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and

Promotion (DIPP). ‘Make in India’ was launched by Shri Narendra Modi in September 2014 as a major national programme designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development, protect intellectual property and build bestin-class manufacturing infrastructure. Xiaomi’s unique and innovative direct-toconsumer business model has been instrumental in disrupting the Indian smartphone industry. By manufacturing its

smartphones in India, Xiaomi is extending its longterm commitment to the Indian market. Investments like these set an example for more international players to join the ‘Make in India’ programme and will play a key role in transforming India into a global manufacturing hub. Xiaomi has partnered with Foxconn Technology Group to manufacture its smartphones in India. The factory is based in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The choice of location is strategic as Andhra Pradesh is known to have

highly skilled technical manpower, an enterprising population and a dynamic emerging leadership – a combination of factors that make the state appealing to high-growth technological companies such as Xiaomi. The first Mi phone to be manufactured in India is Redmi 2 Prime, an enhanced version of Redmi 2 with 2GB RAM and 16GB Flash, which will be available for Rs. 6999 on Mi.com and other partner sites (Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal). Dual SIM support, and a 4.7″ HD display. With the memory upgrade, Redmi 2 Prime offers an even smoother user experience and more space for apps and media. Foxconn has already started producing Redmi 2 Prime at their Sri City factory, and 100% of the Redmi 2 Prime units sold in India are made in India. Hugo Barra, Vice President, Xiaomi Global, said, “Manufacturing smartphones locally is a significant step towards incorporating Xiaomi into the fabric of India in the years to come. Thanks to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visionary plan to transform India into an attractive destination for manufacturing, we have a great opportunity to make our products in India, bringing us even closer to Indian consumers and contributing to India’s evolution in the technology sector. After taking into consideration several

factors, manufacturing in Andhra Pradesh was an obvious choice for us. This has been possible due to the support of Chief Minister Shri N Chandrababu Naidu and his forward thinking policies, as well as Shri Ashok K Kantha, the Ambassador of India to China, who played a key role in helping us to forge links with Andhra Pradesh.” Manu Jain, Head of India Operations, Xiaomi, said, “We started looking at options for local manufacturing as soon as Xiaomi entered India last year. Being a key driver of ‘Make in India,’ DIPP Secretary Shri Amitabh Kant has been a strong supporter of Xiaomi right from the start, and has played an important role in turning our local manufacturing plans into reality. Local manufacturing shows Xiaomi’s commitment to being in India for the long haul, and we are also able to contribute to generating more jobs in India. We are

truly excited to be playing a role in enhancing the quality of life of the people of India.” Honorable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu said, “We have great faith in young leaders and young companies like Xiaomi. These new generation companies and entrepreneurs will be key to the success of Andhra Pradesh and India. We are happy to partner with Xiaomi as they set up their first manufacturing unit in India, as part of the Make in India program. We believe this partnership will provide new opportunities to youth of the state and develop an electronics manufacturing ecosystem of global standards in Andhra Pradesh. We welcome Xiaomi to Sunrise Andhra Pradesh and India.” Shri Amitabh Kant, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), said, “Xiaomi is a unique example

of ‘Invested by China, Made in India’. Xiaomi is known for its quality technology and craftsmanship, and has an immense following amongst young India. I am sure they will make India their home and open many more production facilities.” The Ambassador of India to China, His Excellency Shri Ashok K. Kantha, said, “I congratulate Xiaomi on this important milestone in their India journey. As an innovative global technology company, the manufacturing of Xiaomi products in India is a demonstration of Xiaomi’s commitment to India and a recognition of the potential for win-win economic collaborations between India and China. I am confident that Xiaomi will be an example and encouragement to other Chinese companies that are looking at India. We are happy to support their efforts in building trade and investment links with India.”

The device is a water-resistant one with IPx7 certification and comes into two variants - 1GB RAM / 8GB ROM and 2GB RAM / 16GB ROM. The device also has latest Android Lollipop OS v5.1.1.

Design This device is relatively large, display is good enough at 1280x720p (294 pixels per inch). Comes with a Gorilla

Glass 3, on the back you’ve a soft-touch replaceable cover that snaps in place and allows you access to micro-SD and SIM card slots. The back of the Moto G (3rd Gen) now features an updated design with a new metallic accent around the camera and a new texture for additional grip, plus the same great curved design for easy one-handed use. While this device is not rustproof, it is waterproof. You have one speaker above the display dedicated to your phone, while the other, below the display, is a mono media speaker. Performance The Moto G 2015 edition works with Android 5.1 Lollipop, the software here isn’t all that different from a Nexus device. One new feature of this new smartphone is advance water resistance feature which is IPX7 rated and will keep your Moto G (3rd Gen) safe from splashes and accidental drops in water. It is designed to withstand immersion in up to 3 feet of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, provided the back cover is properly sealed. But do keep in mind that it is designed to work while submerged underwater so do not use while swimming. Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with a 1.4 GHz quad-core CPU, the Moto G (3rd Gen) will have 4G LTE network speed capability for faster Internet, streaming, gaming and instant connectivity. Another great improvement we found in Moto G 3rd Gen is its camera performance. Featuring a 13 MP imaging sensor, f2.0 lens, and Hybrid Multilayer IR cut filter, you can truly capture the best looking images in any lighting condition. And when ambient lighting isn’t enough, the new Dual Dynamic Correlated Color

Temperature (CCT) flash automatically adjusts to ensure you get natural looking skin tones and consistent vibrant colors. Front camera offers a wide 72 degree field of view, and features Motorola’s ‘Best Shot’ feature which captures multiple shots before and after you touch the screen, recognizing issues like blurred subjects or blinking eyes and recommends the best picture to keep, so you always get the best shot. In darker conditions, the phone’s display will even flash to add a little extra light to your shot. This device works with an Adaptive Brightness setting so based on the amount of light coming in to this smartphone’s front-facing light sensor, your display will be bright or dim. The UI is very neat and it has its own gallery and camera interface. Perhaps the most helpful of the additions that’ve been made to this Moto G in 2015 is the Moto Actions: “chop twice for flashlight” and “twist for quick capture.”Flipping your phone around in your hand turns the flashlight on (the LEDs at the back of the device) or launches your camera. And finally the 2470 mAh battery go all day without plugging in. Verdict Great option for anyone who wants a long lasting durable low-end smartphone with good performance. Pros Durable, advance water resistance, good performer Cons Not much change in design. Price INR 11,999 for 8 GB, 1GB RAM & INR 12,999 for 16GB, 2GB RAM

Specifications • IPX7 Water Resistance • 13 MP Primary Camera • 2470 mAh Battery • 4G LTE

Beware of Ransomware disguised as Windows 10 Update I

f you dare to update your system to Windows 10 based on fake emails from Microsoft, then you could be a victim of Cryptolocker Ransomware. eScan research team has found that cyber-criminals are using various social engineering techniques to take advantage of millions of people looking for a free system upgrade to Windows 10 which was officially launched on July 29 worldwide . What is Cryptolocker? It is a kind of Ransomware which can prohibit Windows users accessing their photos, personal documents, zip files and host of other files. It makes use of asymmetric encryption, i.e. victims cannot access their files unless they have a private key, which is owned by the malware author and in order to obtain the key, the victim has to pay ransom amount to the cyber-criminal in virtual currency. How does it work? The malware enters into the user’s system through a fake email from Microsoft even though cyber-criminal makes use of well-crafted email address update@ microsoft.com making it appear as a valid one along with a subject line ‘Windows 10 Free Update’ and an attachment. The attachment was downloaded and executed by our research team and found a warning message along with instruction to pay $600 for the private key within 96 hours. The malicious email was traced to spam servers located in countries such as India, Russia, Thailand, USA and France.

What to do? • Users can update their current system to Windows 10 in two stages, i.e. reserve and upgrade. In the first stage, users need to check whether they have got a notification in their taskbar from Windows which will reserve a free copy of Windows 10. On clicking the menu present on top left, it will check your system and run Windows Advisor to make sure that your hardware and software is compatible with Windows 10. Windows 10 will be downloaded once it is available. And the last stage is Installation where users will get a notification that Windows 10 is downloaded which needs to be installed. • Update your antivirus software (eScan) on a regular basis, which will protect your system from all kinds of Malware attacks. • Configure your antivirus settings to automatic system updates. • Regular backup of your important files. • Make sure you either implement Mailscan at gateway level or enable Mail Anti-virus on endpoint in order to block extensions such as *.EXE, *.SCR, *.JS, *.VBE etc. These attachments would infect your system. • Open emails only if you are positive about the source.

INTERVIEW

Pebble’s philosophy has always been

‘CONveNIeNCe wITh QuALITY’ As a provider of mobile accessories, what are the latest trends you notice and what are you doing to make best out of these trends? All the latest developments in this segment are moving toward an ‘on-the-go’ philosophy, to allow the users to make the best use of their smartphones in their fast, travel intensive lives. Thus, products are becoming lighter, smaller, wearable and multi-functional all at the same time. As a brand, Pebble’s philosophy has always been – ‘Convenience with Quality,’ which is well reflected in our line of products–be they Power Banks, Selfie Sticks or others. For instance, Pebble Power Banks are known to be among the lightest, sleekest and yet elegant looking, top quality power banks that really focus on easeof-use for the customer. In fact, we recently won the award for the Most User-Friendly Power Bank Brand in India! Please brief us about how your mobile accessory products, especially power banks, are doing in the market. Please give us your focus for the next year? Pebble is alreadyplaced among the Top 10 brands for Power Banks in India. Our focus in the current and next Financial Year would be to create a much stronger hold in general trade and distribution network, so as to reach a wider audience and make Pebble a household name. How do you motivate your channel that the channel will promote your products with zeal and how do you ensure their profitability? For this, first we provide our channel partners the confidence in the quality of our products. This they can easily judge by the extremely low rate of replacements required. Second, we make sure that a smooth customer service process is followed, so that they do not face any issues

Komal Gupta,

Director-Marketing, Pebble, India in case of a customer complaint. We work with our channel partners as a single team, together planning schemes and promotions required in their specific areas. What new innovations are coming up in the near future regarding mobile accessories? What new do you plan to add to your portfolio in the immediate future? At the moment, innovations are focused on enhancing and upgrading the existing functionalities of a smartphone. Today innovations are directed towards improving battery life, increasing storage space, enhancing camera features, boosting sound quality, magnifying display, adding wearability and so on. Pebble is already covering most of these aspects in Power Banks, OTG Pen Drives and Selfie Sticks. In the near future, Pebble plans to add more such products to cover all the possible enhancements for a smartphone, with a range of Exclusive Bluetooth Speakers, Headsets, Magnifiers, and Wireless Chargers. What are the challenges you are facing in general and how you are meeting these challenges? At the moment, the biggest challenge we are facing is an increasing competition from fake or very low quality products – in the online market and general trade. There brands (or unbranded products) claim to have high-end

features and high mAh capacity, whereas actual capacities are far much lower than claimed. Thankfully, Products such as Power Banks have now been declared under BIS and this has already started removing the fake products from the market. What kind of service and warranty support are you providing to the end customers so it will also place your down-line partners in a comfortable position? All our products have a standard 6-month Replacement Guarantee. The end customer can either get an immediate replacement of a faulty product from the retail counter where it was bought, or they can call our customer support team and arrange a pick-and-drop of the replacement. It is an extremely hassle-free smooth process for the end customer as well as our down-line partners. What is your present growth rate and are you satisfied with your growth rate? Where you want to be in the coming 2 years? Our Present growth rate is around 60%, which we plan to increase to around 100% at least for the next 3 years. In the next 3 years, we see ourselves at a turnover of over Rs.100 crores in the mobile accessories business alone. Today, there are many providers offering mobile accessories. What are your USPs and how you think your USPs offer you a winning combination? Pebble’s core USP is its perfect blend of Elegant Design and TopNotch Quality. We do not compromise on either. All our products have a unique, sleek and ergonomic design along with extremely highend features. Secondly, the hasslefree customer care service provided by Pebble is among the best and unmatchable in the industry. Lastly, even though we are positioned as a Premium Brand in terms of the quality, our prices are still competitive.
