From Our Leadership
During a year in which the world has seen the Arab Spring, European debt crisis and the U.S. exit from Iraq, it is easy to see why education on global issues is and should be important. “Connected” is the watchword that describes the Minnesota International Center’s programs. From our Great Decisions conference focusing on “Foreign Policy and the Media” , to Ambassador Ross Wilson speaking on “Old Turkey, New Turkey in a Complicated World”, to Dr. Wilhelmina Holder updating us on the situation in Liberia, these and other topics all connect us to the conversation about America’s role in the world – today and in the future. MIC continued to receive accolades as the state’s coordinator of the U.S. State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). This year, Daniel Getahun, MIC’s IVLP Program Manager, received the National Programmer of the Year award, which not only honors his great work but also recognizes Minnesota’s exceptional resources, dinner hosts, escorts and volunteers who help this program shine nationwide. Professional appointments were arranged for close to 500 international visitors here on myriad professional programs – from human trafficking, to food safety, to integration of ethnic minorities, to the role of the arts – along with dinner hosting with MIC members for more than 300 of those same visitors. MIC’s Great Decisions Program continues to be the most successful in the country with close to 60 discussion groups and, this year, MIC launched a partnership with The Star
Tribune, introducing an even wider audience to the nuances of U.S. foreign policy through the 2012 Great Decisions topics. This collaboration has been so mutually beneficial that MIC and The Star Tribune will be continuing this series of monthly editorial articles in the coming year. It is essential for Minnesota students to have a global mindset in our interconnected world. MIC’s K-12 education initiatives have opened doors and minds for our youngest community members to explore different cultures. It is equally important that our educators also have a global mindset and with this in mind, MIC sent four Minnesota teachers to Turkey as part of the “Spotlight on Turkey” program, financed by the Turkish Cultural Foundation and World Affairs Councils of America. These teachers will be sharing what they learned through their travels with the community this fall and incorporating their experiences into their classroom curriculum. International education can be social too! MIC’s “Celebration of Turkey” gala was spectacular, chaired by MIC board member Judy Lewis, and with honorary chairs Ertugrul and Karen Tuzcu. Our Culture through Cuisine program offered wonderful opportunities for MIC members to meet at local ethnic restaurants and, we began a new program called enRoute, a series of networking events for younger MIC members looking to build their international careers. And don’t forget the definition of enjoyment - our ever-popular WorldQuest which took place in the Twin Cities, on corporate campuses and in Northern Minnesota. Your generosity to MIC has made it possible for us to deliver the world to Minnesota for the past 59 years and we thank you. As we celebrate our 60th year in 2013 of “bringing the world to Minnesota and Minnesota to the world” , MIC will continue to have strong and enduring impact on our community and our world because of your support.

BRINGING THE WORLD TO MINNESOTA AND MINNESOTA TO THE WORLD
MIC’s K-12 education program engages Minnesota students in cross-cultural conversations with international speakers to enhance school curricula and build the necessary skills for students to live, work and lead in a global economy.
WorldQuest an international trivia competition where teams of friends, families and colleagues test their knowledge of “all things international.” We host three types of WorldQuest events in addition to our annual Community WorldQuest competition: Academic WorldQuest (for high school students), WorldQuest in the Workplace and WorldQuest in Greater Minnesota.
Great Decisions sponsored nationally by the Foreign Policy Association and coordinated locally by MIC, Great Decisions offers opportunities for people statewide to discuss important issues of American foreign policy.
