IF YOU READ ONE BOOK THIS YEAR

THIS IS IT “

One of education’s most influential voices offers a compelling perspective on the state of American education today and the collective commitment it will take to transform schools so that all students achieve at high levels.” —Stephanie Hirsch, executive director, Learning Forward

NEW

Explore the state of education today. In this thoughtprovoking book, the author presents a compelling case for why contemporary American educators are the greatest generation in history. He carefully explains why current national reform policies have failed and presents specific steps policymakers, administrators, and teachers must take to transform American schools to meet student needs in the 21st century. 312 pages

• Critique the commonly presented media messages about schooling in America. • Consider the evidence for why the present generation of American educators has accomplished more than previous generations. • Evaluate the assumptions driving policies set up to improve schooling. 58CCA–BKF702

DR. DUFOUR EXPLAINS WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHY THIS BOOK? This book grew out of frustration. I was frustrated that politicians and the media seemed to be waging an increasingly aggressive war not just on the public school system, but also on the educators within it. Their characterizations of teachers and principals have been inaccurate and unfair. But I was also frustrated that educators too often have either ignored educational processes that clearly have a positive impact on student achievement or have applied those processes in a halfhearted way. So this book is intended to influence policymakers at all levels and to defend and applaud contemporary educators at the same time that it challenges them to do more.

WHY NOW? I felt it was the right time for this book for two reasons. First, the attacks on educators seem to be increasingly strident and blatantly unfair. Second, I am battling a serious health problem and know that my time to influence the profession is limited.

WHY MUST EVERY EDUCATOR READ THIS BOOK? Today’s educators need to know that contrary to what is passing for conventional wisdom, they are the greatest generation of educators in American history by almost every measure of student achievement. They also need to know that the stakes for students who are unsuccessful in the K–12 system have never been higher. Finally, they need to know that there is a great deal more they can and must do to promote student success that lies within their sphere of influence. This book presents compelling evidence for each of these points.

MEET DR. RICHARD DUFOUR Richard DuFour, EdD, was a public school educator for 34 years, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. A prolific author and sought-after consultant, he is recognized as one of the leading authorities on helping school practitioners implement the Professional Learning Communities at Work process in their schools and districts. Answer the four critical questions of a PLC 1

What is it we expect our students to learn?

3

Using desktops, laptops, or tablets, teams can identify essential standards, create student-friendly learning targets, and build common assessments.

2

How will we know when they have learned it? Common assessments can be automatically graded via computer camera or browser. Based on their scores, students can be grouped by proficiency level. Rich charts and graphs enable teams to analyze data student by student and skill by skill.

How will we respond when some students do not learn? School leaders can manage master schedules to create systematic processes for intervention. Teams can then easily group students into appropriate intervention sessions based on proficiency and need. During interventions, teachers can provide evidence of proficiency, keep notes on students, and mark students for follow-up.

4

How will we respond when some students already know it? Global PD automatically identifies students who are above proficiency by skill, allowing teams to group those students into targeted enrichment sessions and track their progress using online collaboration tools.
