filthy lucre If there’s a band that represents all the crappiest parts of punk rock, from the substance abuse to the sexism to the knee-jerk reactionary behavior, it’s probably the Sex Pistols. John Lydon, aka frontman Johnny Rotten, continues to prove that you can be a jackass well into your golden years. Last spring he told a female Australian TV host, “When a man is talking, do not interrupt.” Charming. But I cannot deny that the Sex Pistols’ legacy is inextricable from punk, both visually and philosophically. (Assholes are always going to be a part of punk rock.) Malcolm McLaren, were among the first to turn rebellion into a consumer product; feel free to blame them for Hot Topic. We can also trace the line of ripped-up shirts and mohawks and Anglophile-loving fashion back to the Pistols (and the Sex boutique started by McLaren and Vivienne Westwood). appropriate for the collage-heavy Pistols aesthetic. It shows the gnarly side of the band’s two-year span, but the incongruously nice side, too, like appearances at kids’ fundraisers. Filth is the result of director Julien Temple trying to present a more balanced take than his 1980 The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, which many critics believe was too heavy on McLaren’s point of view. The snotty attitude that the Pistols embodied lives on, though I prefer bands that harness it to subvert classism and sexism, rather than the ones using it merely to prey on teenager’s wallets (and bodies, in the case of accused sexual predators like The Casualties). Punk rock continues to evolve, but it’s still sometimes worth remembering where it came from. There’s a visceral thrill to watching Lydon spit “God Save the Queen.” Particularly when we can watch from a safe distance. —Kate Whittle
