PATIENT LIAISON GROUP SEASONAL WINTER ‘FLU VACCINATIONS The second vaccination Clinic will be held at the surgery on Saturday 14 October from 9.00 am and 1.00 pm. For St Nicholas Patients ONLY: A vaccination clinic will be held on Friday 20 October between 12.00 and 1.00pm in the Village Hall. Appointments are available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. Eligible and “at risk” patients will receive a reminder on their “Repeat Prescription List” which will invite them to make an appointment on either of these days. If you have any concerns about your eligibility or the availability of the vaccination, please contact Reception. So please, don't delay book today! OUR NEW PROJECT To purchase a SECA Electro Cardio Graph (ECG) machine with interpretive software. This machine is the latest in ECG technology. It is PC based with the facility to store the recorded heart traces, analyse heart activity, interlink with patient records, and provide a print out of the results. The approximate cost of the equipment is £2000.00 + VAT and our target is to achieve this by Christmas. MISSED APPOINTMENTS Thank you, another slight improvement, again probably due to the holiday period. Last month 30 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 37 did not attend their nurse’s appointment, that’s still 67 patients wasting valuable appointments and time. Please, if you don’t need it, cancel it. If you keep forgetting then get our text reminder service. FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY Thank you to all those patients who take part and please continue to do so, we welcome all your comments, because any feed-back, good or bad, can help us to continually improve our service to all our patients. Last month we received 252 patient responses to “would you recommend our Practice” and are as follows: Extremely likely/Likely - 92% ; Extremely unlikely/Unlikely - 4% ; Unsure/Don’t know - 4%. ‘WALK FOR LIFE’ ACTIVITY PROGRAMME Join us every Thursday morning at 10.30 for a walk around the local area for about an hour or so, and meet old and new friends. Bring your pets as well, they might also enjoy the exercise and make new friends too. SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 1.00pm onwards on the following days: Wednesday 18 October and Thursday 30 November for staff training. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times, and of course, please don’t forget to include all the family who may require repeat prescriptions and check when their medication review appointment is due. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive non-urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY! Our ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR will be held on SATURDAY 18 NOVEMBER. As this is our most popular event, tables are highly sought after, and are on sale now. So please book early to avoid disappointment, as we only have a few remaining. See our Poster on page 11. LIAISON GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821 200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821 049. or email kenself@me.com.

DENNIS NEVILLE Cynthia and family would like to thank everybody for their cards on the loss of Dennis, who fought for so long. All the kind words and memories you shared were much appreciated and for all who came to Church - what a turnout! Special thanks to Jonathan and all his team, also thanks to Rev. Richard Braddy for a lovely service not forgetting the Bowls Club who put on a wonderful spread. We all did Dennis proud Thank you Cynthia THE 13th ANNUAL “RIDE TO REMEMBER” IN MEMORY OF JAKE PHILPOTT Well here we are again, another year has flown by and the “Ride to Remember” for Jake has been another great success. This bank holiday was one of the best weather wise, as everyone who came to join us would agree, blue sky, no grey clouds looming and beautiful sunshine, so if anyone was a bit worried or superstitious with it being our 13th year…… so far so good!! We set off from the Royal British Legion with about 35 riders, a slightly smaller group this year, as many people were away on holidays but with several families joining us in cars with “little ones” and some of our “senior” family members, it was a good crowd to enjoy the day with. Ahead of us was the 25 mile route, but for everyone this year the Minnis to Reculver section, along the seas edge, was one of the best it’s ever been, hot, but with a slight breeze, perfect cycling weather. We were met by family and friends at every pub we stopped at making it a really enjoyable time. Getting back to any superstitious thoughts being number 13, every year since the start we have always had a truck or van following us in case of emergency, flat tyres or a breakdown, this year we didn’t, so when after leaving “The Gate Inn”, one of our riders had an incident on a narrow lane with an inconsiderate driver. Unfortunately help was not at hand so it was case of walk to the next stop which was “The Grove”, take the buckled wheels off the bike and load into the boot of a car. Fortunately, he was only shaken up and had a nasty graze on his shoulder, it could have been much worse. Luckily his partner who was cycling too knew exactly what to do... she got him a pint and told him “you’ll be fine”. We enjoyed sitting in the lovely gardens of all the pubs we visited along the way, the weather was so good that we had to take on more liquid at some stops!! With everyone safely back at The Legion we could enjoy a lovely ploughman’s lunch and a well-earned rest. It was then time to reflect on what an enjoyable day we’d all had. Thanks, must got to Kathy, Cynthia, Doreen, Min and Barbara for sorting the food, Dawson and Freddie for being such very good boys for their Great-Nannies all day, Josh who was the youngest rider… again, well done. But most of all to EVERYONE who turned up, making what is a very important event for our family into such a wonderful occasion, we truly love your company every year and look forward to the 14th one in 2018.

MINSTER SURGERY PATIENT LIAISON GROUP

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS Dr Crosfield Sadly, Dr Crosfield will be unavailable during the next few weeks due to a family bereavement. The surgery has taken steps to introduce Locum GP’s into the Practice to cover her absence and we ask that you bear with us during this time. We would also like to reassure you that the Practice will strive to maintain the usual high level of commitment to their patients at all times. In the meantime, our thoughts and condolences are with Dr Crosfield and her family during this difficult time, and we look forward to her speedy return. Issued by Minster Surgery 15th September 2017 ZAC’S MUSINGS Well here we are again and I’m racking my brain to find something to say. Lately I’ve been sleeping most of the day and night, I’m probably only awake an hour or two each day and then Mum tells me I’m a real pain if I see the old boy leave home without me. I don’t think that showing I’m missing him, however much he moans himself when he’s here, is anything to complain about. Not eating too well these days, sometimes I go all day without touching a thing, the old tum just doesn’t seem to want it, likewise I’m not drinking too much either which is probably not too good for my kidney problem, but I can’t force myself can I, after all I might make myself poorly!!

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? October is when we start to hunker down into Winter food, but, for a final hurrah, I thought I’d remember the Summer we had, especially in Kent, the Garden of England… This recipe is perfect for those strawberries you bought on impulse in Canterbury market and then forgot about! It is also great with any of our late crop English strawberries as they tend to be a little more watery and in need of a bit of encouragement… Quick Strawberry Mousse with Basil 10oz/300g strawberries, fresh or frozen plus a few for decoration (or if they are beyond it, purée everything and keep some of the purée aside) 3 egg whites 2oz/50g caster sugar ¼ pint/142ml double cream 1 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional) Purée the strawberries in a food processor or blender and add a little extra sugar if they are sour (but only a little). Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then add the caster sugar and keep going until you have a thick, glossy result, like an uncooked meringue (which it is). Half whip the cream so it has some air incorporated but is not stiff, and fold it into the strawberry purée. Now fold the whisked egg mousse into the purée using a metal spoon. I always put a tablespoonful in first to loosen the texture of the mousse before adding the rest. Add the chopped basil. Pour into a pretty glass bowl and chill until set. This can be made a day or two in advance, but is best eaten at just below room temperature. Decorate with strawberries, basil and cream. MINSTER W.I. What a great speaker we had at our September meeting. Philip and Sally own Barnsole vineyard in Staple and Philip gave us a fascinating talk about the history of wine right from the Romans to the present time. Due to global warming there are now a growing number of vineyards in Britain (17 have now been planted around Canterbury) and as the weather is now too warm in the Champagne region of France more and more of the famous Champagne names are now planting vineyards in Britain -Taittinger in Chilham and Pol Roger in Hampshire! We also got to taste three of their MINSTER POST OFFICE delicious Barnsole wines……. another successful evening. Next WI Meeting Tuesday 10 October - Craft and Social Crafts include painting, Christmas card making, knitting/crocheting poppies and darts All welcome

THANKS TO MINSTER’S YOUNGSTERS AND OUR SHOW SECURITY TEAM I feel it is only fair that I comment on the behaviour of Minster’s youngsters at the Show in July. We are always quick enough to moan when they misbehave but I am pleased to report that after many previous years of worry and dealing with bad behaviour that this year was totally different. There was no trouble from Friday when the marquee went up to it coming down on Sunday so 10/10 from me to you youngsters and thanks for reducing my stress levels. Also I’d like to say thanks to our brilliant security volunteers who spent all night in the marquee, you are all stars! Karen Brazil

Minster Matters Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of Key Points 5th September, 2017

• The Community Warden and The Police Community Support Officer reported on incidents in the parish during July and August. The incidents included two large parties which caused disturbance in the village area and resulted in some damage to cars in Monkton Road. PCSO Riches reported that a youth had been cautioned following incidents of damage and theft some months ago in Tothill Street. Cllr. Grove expressed his dissatisfaction with this result. Speed checks in Tothill Street found 8 vehicles out of 60 had exceeded the speed limit, with the top speed being 42mph. PCSO Riches confirmed that this would be his last meeting as he has been appointed to a specialist role relating to child exploitation in Thanet. New PCSO’s were being recruited but in the interim period temporary cover will be provided by Canterbury officers.

• A local resident had suggested that wild flower planting be established on the grass verge in Tothill Street adjacent to the Old Police Houses. Cllr. Jones reminded the meeting that he completed extensive research into this matter previously on behalf of the parish and this site was not considered suitable. It was also noted that a number of the residents had found this suggestion unacceptable. • Minster Bowls Club had reported that they were continually being asked for use of the club toilet facilities by members of the public, many of them linked to the all-weather arena. It was agreed that all users of the pitch would be reminded that the caretaker will give them access to an outside toilet facility at the Pavilion when the pitch is open for use, and that signs would be erected directing people to the public toilets in the High Street. •

The meeting agreed that the family of the late Mick Mungroosingh should be allowed to place a memorial bench outside his house on the grass area near the post office.

• The Chairman reported that the Licensing Committee at TDC had granted McDonald’s the extension to their licence allowing them to serve all night in the restaurant rather than just drive through; this was despite numerous objections from councillors and residents. The licence will only be reviewed if incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour can be connected to McDonald’s. She asked residents to ensure that they reported all such incidents to the Police.

The Chairman reported to the meeting that the support given to the village by Mr. Clive Attwell of Attwell’s Newsagents had been brought to her notice; this often unrecognised support ranged from the Minster Show and Christmas Lights through to local good causes and local initiatives. The shop is open 364 days a year and provides a hub for the community. Members expressed their appreciation and agreed that a letter should be sent expressing our gratitude.

• The Chairman introduced and welcomed the newly appointed Assistant Parish Clerk, Mrs. Clare Wilsden, who will commence work on 25th September.

The Clerk reported that Sunley Estates had written of their intention to apply for permission to build a house on the green space in Hillhouse Drive. Residents in the vicinity had been contacted and over 20 objections had been received. The previous negotiations to transfer the land to the Parish Council to be retained as open space had come to a halt. The council agreed to object vehemently to any proposal to build on the open space.

Questions from the public included a request to consider a jogging track round the new open space around the multi-use games area, traffic calming in Foxborough Lane and cars driving on the kerb to park in the new lay-by in Taylor Road; these items will be added to the next Highways and Operations agendas.

• A brief biography of the Chairman had appeared in Minster Matters recently and she now asked all other parish councillors to provide a brief pen picture of themselves for the next edition. • A local resident has 15 pictures of old Minster which she would like to be retained and displayed in the Parish; it was asked that some thought be given as to where they could be accommodated. Cllr. Bailey said that he would raise the matter with the Village Hall committee. • The Clerk reported that the KCC works in the Butts Field Estate had been completed on schedule. Some yellow lines have yet to be re-instated. • Plans for a bus shelter in Monkton Road at the junction with Freeman’s Road have been cancelled following objections from nearby residents. • At the last meeting concerns were expressed about Wayside Caravan Park where hedgerows had been removed; it was confirmed that replanting was in progress. However, Cllr. Grove agreed to speak with TDC about the management of the site and its development. • The Chairman reported that negotiations were still ongoing with TDC in relation to Car Parking charges in Minster; the next meeting with CEO Madeline Homer and Operations Director Gavin Waite is scheduled for 27th September. • The Clerk reported that Civic Award plaques were now in our possession and consideration was given as to who should receive this new local award. The first nomination is Mr. Philip Bowman for his sympathetic restoration of the Chapel in the High Street. A presentation ceremony will be arranged.

DO YOU KNOW WHO GREW THIS GRASSHEAD FOR THE MINSTER SHOW THIS YEAR? The Show Committee wish to have the cup engraved with the winners name but they do not know who won it - do you know? Please tell Karen in Attwells or email: editor@minstermatters.org.uk thank you.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB The outdoor season is over, after what has been a difficult 80th Anniversary year with injuries and illness affecting many players making team selections a nightmare. The in-house competition finals were held on 17th and 18th September, too late for the results to be included in this report. The Short Mat season gets under way in October with the following games at home: 7th Memorial Shield 10.00am 10th Division 1 Hinds v Ash Angels 26th Division 1 Hinds v Sturry Squirrels 12th Division 2 Abbots v Barham Bears 13th Division 3 Monks v Bekesbourne Dodgers 21st Division 3 Monks v Boughton Challengers 25th In-House Competition 1st round Wednesday Pairs All matches other than the Memorial Shield commence at 7.30p.m., and everyone is welcome to attend and support the local teams. As so many outdoor bowlers disappear once the season is over I am taking this opportunity to remind them that the A.G.M. is on 24th November and hope that as many as possible will attend. MINSTER ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION Our latest fundraising events have been great fun and very successful. The quiz was supported by 123 people, spread over 19 tables. Ian Munday, as always, provided the entertainment as well as the questions with Christine Lynch marking the sheets to give scores on the doors! The raffle was popular and well received. The winning table of 8 won a bottle of wine each. Our thanks go to the Royal British Legion and the staff. The treasure hunt attracted 9 cars. The cryptic clues had a lot of people guessing, but everyone made it back to the finishing point at Parkminster. Those who bought a picnic with them, feasted on their goodies whilst waiting for the marking to be finalized. The most points were gained from a Twinning foursome, followed closely by Helen and Robert Owen and Sue and Steve Keeler, who it was deemed should take the prize. They received a bottle of Prosecco and a plaque. A great time was had by all and it was requested that a similar event should be organized by Ann and Jamie again next year. January can often be a quiet month following on from the hype of Christmas, so why not book up to join us on the coach trip to “Holiday on Ice” at Brighton on 13 January. There are just 7 places available. Full details from Carol on 01843 447 706. The AGM has now been confirmed for Friday 10 November, 7.30pm at the Neighbourhood Centre, all are welcome to attend. If you have any ideas of events that you would like us to put on for you, please let us know as we’re starting to consider event dates for 2018. Finally, there are just 5 places left for our Race Night on Saturday 21 October at the RBL, at only £15pp including a 3 course meal it should be a great evening, interested? Ring Carol on 01843 447 706. Thank you to all our followers on facebook.com/minstertwinning and our website at minsterarmboutstwinning.org.uk.

On a sunny day in July, fourteen budding local artists participated in a fundraising event organized by “Looking Ahead”, a project at Parkminster which offers training opportunities for adults with learning needs. The students tend the beautiful gardens and run the bustling Café in the old barn, as well as running an art gallery and café in Margate. The judges including Sir Roger Gale MP, Mother Nikola, Rev Karen Gooding, and Caroline of Lovely’s Art Shop were very impressed by the high quality and creativity of the artwork. Chris’ painting of hydrangeas against the ancient Abbey wall was stunning. Brian Davenport and Lynda James of Looking Ahead felt that the day was a great success and hope to repeat another “Painting Challenge” next year. Watch out in Minster Matters for dates of next year’s event.

October Minster Matters NEWS FROM THE ABBEY

2017

After a very dry spell in June and July, many sheep farmers in Kent were quite worried about the grass shortage for their flocks. The gardens were parched and the local vegetable farmers were also becoming anxious. The sisters at the Abbey as well as many of our friends began to pray earnestly for rain. During Vespers one evening in late July the rains began to fall. The sound of the rain on the Chapel roof was delightful. Recently our friend Dave, a local shepherd, came to shear the sheep and taught us some of his skills. In these days of manufactured fibres there is not a demand for the wool. If anyone would like a fleece for spinning next year please let us know and we can save you one! Now, as autumn approaches, the fields are a luscious green and it is lovely to watch the sheep and lambs grazing in the Abbey fields. We are so grateful to God for all the gifts of His creation which give us such joy!
