POSTER ARTIST Taking Flight with Digital Art

Marcel Duchamp said not all artists are chess players, but “all chess players are artists.” For Beau Tudzarov, a digital artist from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Beau Tudzarov latter is especially true. A chess player since he was age 5 (and respectfully beating his dad by 10), Tudzarov was selected as the 2012 Lakefront Festival of Arts (LFOA) poster artist. “Chess is a running theme in my life,” he offers. “Creating a picture is like visualizing a chess game. You can’t touch the pieces or move them. You have to do that in your head.” When Tudzarov created this year’s poster, he drew on his prior experience as an exhibitor at LFOA. “I remember getting to the show early so I wouldn’t miss the opening of the Museum’s wings. It’s spectacular,” he says. Tudzarov used that memory to inform his surreal landscape of Milwaukee’s lakefront. “I thought about movement and how the wings look like they’re about to take flight. How the pieces of the wing buried in the sand then open. This is about letting your mind be free. You’re not earthbound. You can let your mind be free through art,” he says. Digital art, says Tudzarov, captures the concept of freedom especially well. He uses a 3-D program to build the wireframe models of his concept, manipulates an image-editing application to enhance the elements, puts everything together, produces a final rendering, processes a high-resolution image for about two days then prints the final piece. It takes about a month from concept to completion. Because there’s so much detail in Tudzarov’s work – notice the reflection on the partially buried pawn, for example – it’s worth multiple viewings to absorb all the elements. And when you ponder the poster, be sure to find Tudzarov at this year’s festival. “I really like the LFOA patrons. They’re very knowledgeable and less intimated than others about digital art,” he says. — Laura Patten Photo by Timothy Hursley
