Egyptian Crossword Tiles for Board Games

Egyptian Crossword Tiles for Board Games Word games with a difference. Liven them up by substituting the letters of the alphabet with hieroglyphic equivalents! Print off page 3 of this PDF and cut out the letters there. I used the number of copies of each letter as suggested by my scrabble board. You can use these proportions , or fewer, or more letters to suit your reinterpretation of your favourite word game. Unleash your imagination! The mainly one consonant signs of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs have been assigned rough equivalents to many of the letters of the alphabet by scholars. There are some interesting additions, for example CH and TH and SH – and omissions, no I, L, U , X or Z. However, with a bit of imagination, alternatives can be found. For example, Q can be expressed with two letters KW, and X with KS. Letter substitutions are then used for the other missing letters. Spelling takes on a whole new dimension. Of course this is all a gross oversimplification and uses only a very small proportion of the rich repertoire of hieroglyphics. But remember not to get too serious, these are after all only parts for a game. Does this seem complicated? Not really – there is a simple chart overleaf. I have also included the available alphabet equivalents on the tile designs themselves.
