929-5875 10/13 – 11/2 Art Exhibit: Photographers East 10/17 – 11/2 Theater at the Southampton Cultural Center: Steven Sondheim's "Company" Sondheim collaborated with George Furth (book) and Harold Prince (director) to create Company, the first of the Sondheim/Prince shows that were to lay the foundation for the post-Golden Age Broadway musicals. Company was the first non-linear, "concept," musical. Set firmly in, and often about, New York, Company follows five married, once married, or soon to be married couples and their mutual friend, Robert, a 35 year old bachelor who has been unable to connect in a long-term relationship. The relationships are presented in a series of vignettes, primarily through Bobby's eyes, so that we see the less than ideal aspects of commitment. However, it is obvious to the audience that the committed are happy. Eventually, Bobby learns that while relationships aren't perfect, they are a necessary part of "Being Alive." Includes the songs "Getting Married Today," "The Ladies Who Lunch," and "Being Alive." 11/3 – 11/16 Art Exhibit: Joan Miller Sat 11/8 Pianist Will Duchon 7:00 pm Pianist Will Duchon will perform a special recital featuring works by Beethoven and Rachmaninov. Sat 11/15 Marianne Koerner sings Gershwin 7:00 pm $10 Marianne Koerner and Richard Barons will return to the Levitas Center for the Arts at the Southampton Cultural Center to present "The Other Gershwin; the Work of Ira Gershwin." Koerner, who will accompany herself on the piano, refers to Ira as "the wind beneath the wings of his brother, George". Together the Gershwins collaborated on literally hundreds of songs that have become standards in the Great American Songbook. Few realize, however, that after George's premature death, Ira continued to write songs, working with many other famous tunesmiths such as Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill and Vernon Duke. "His repertoire of music is a treasure," says Koerner. "These songs are about being in love and loving life." A classically trained singer and pianist, Koerner appeared in Broadway musicals and many television shows in her early career. Marriage, three decades and three sons (now grown) later, she became addicted to the cabaret genre. She has delighted audiences with her original shows locally and abroad. She and writer/narrator Richard Barons, who is the Director of the Easthampton Historical Museum, have worked together over the last few years, focusing their talents on Kern, Rodgers and Hart, and Cole Parter. Mr. Barons has written a lively and entertaining narrative filled with lots of gossip and information about the songs and their creation.
