Alicia Longwell, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator, Art and Education, will examine this issue as reflected in the work of modern masters Alex Katz and Fairfield Porter, the subjects of our two upcoming exhibitions. Katz has said, "I like to finish things." Porter quoted Ingres in saying, "I leave it to time to finish my paintings." On Friday, March 12, "Cut to the Finish" - will look at Alex Katz's method of painting and talk about how the process is absorbed in the ultimate image. On Friday, March 19, "The Finished Muse" - for over 50 years Katz has painted his wife and muse Ada. In this talk we will look at their unique partnership. On Friday, March 26, "Dance Steps" - Alex Katz's drawings of the Paul Taylor Dance Company allow us to look at collaboration between artists and dancers. All talks are free with Museum admission. Bring a lunch and museum will provide dessert and beverages. Fri 3/12 New Global Cinema: “The Lives of Others” 7:30 pm $7 / $5 Parrish members Set in East Germany in 1984, this Oscar-winning film probes the relationship between a captain in the Stasi, the East German secret police, and the successful playwright on whom he spies. A gripping political thriller, the film speaks to current concerns about privacy and the conflict between totalitarianism and art. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes, “Distant” is the story of a successful commercial photographer in Istanbul whose ordered life is disrupted by the arrival of a distant relative from the countryside. Though very different from each other – one is fussy, the other a slob – both men share a disconnectedness from life. Join us for a screening of the Academy Award-nominated “Dancemaker.” A dozen works in the exhibition “Alex Katz: Seeing, Drawing, Making” reflect the artist’s long-standing collaboration with choreographer Paul Taylor. For fifty years Taylor has been acclaimed for the vibrancy, relevance, and power of his dances. He has received the National Medal of Arts, a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant, and was awarded France’s highest honor, the Legion d’Honneur.
