Flat Roofs
The Need for Rainwater Outlets
Contents
Over the past few years, there have been major advances and improvements in the materials used in modern roofing technology. The specifier now has renewed confidence to take full advantage of the benefits of a flat roof and low pitched roof design concept.
Any flat area needs careful design to ensure efficient removal of surface water. Traditionally, water from a flat roof or other structure is channelled by way of a slope to a rainwater pipe. Leaks can often occur at the junction of the membrane and the rainwater pipe.
Hydraulic Design
Flat roofs allow greater planning and design flexibility - roof-top gardens, terracing, patios, car parks, building services and ventilation equipment, delivery areas and provision for adding additional storeys at a later date. All can be accommodated in a flat roof design.
To overcome this potential problem, ACO Fulbora rainwater outlets provide a watertight joint between the membrane and the outlet by mechanically clamping the membrane to the sump unit. Tried and tested for over 40 years, ACO Fulbora outlets have been used successfully on all types of flat roof construction.
Extensive or irregular shaped buildings can be roofed more quickly, easily and cost effectively than a pitched roof.
Flat roofs allow easy access to natural light and because of the simple construction, internal partitioning is easy. This is especially advantageous for commercial or industrial buildings.

Internal condensation is less of a risk because a flat roof uses less airspace than a pitched roof. In addition, the need to heat and illuminate voids is eliminated.
