Introduction & Calendar The unique values of jazz… The Jazzschool offers students more than an opportunity to develop technical ability, learn music theory or play in a group. Jazz itself offers so much more! An American-born and bred art form, jazz has evolved into an international language that is infused with stylistic elements distinctive of cultures from throughout the world. Jazz also incorporates an important structural element — improvisation. These two features join together to make jazz a unique and life-enriching art form. Jazz embodies several core values:

• Jazz bridges cultural boundaries and supports cultural diversity. The wide variety of styles inherent in jazz brings people together from all cultural backgrounds and walks of life.

• Jazz promotes social equality. The jazz ensemble is a purely democratic organization, in which each player contributes to the overarching artistic objective — and each player’s contribution is equally valuable.

• Jazz fosters individual self-expression. Jazz has always reflected, respected and celebrated the personal viewpoint of the individual performer.

• Jazz develops creative problem-solving skills. Improvisation inherently allows for more than one solution to any musical challenge.

• Jazz strengthens team-building skills. Players in a jazz ensemble rely on effective verbal and non-verbal communication to succeed collectively in performance.

• Jazz builds listening skills and focus. Jazz, a largely improvised art form, is inherently unpredictable and demands the continuous, undivided attention of participants. I invite you to join us this fall and experience the many unique values of jazz — first hand! Yours in jazz,

Susan Muscarella President, The Jazzschool Dean of Instruction, Jazzschool Institute

Already a member of the faculty as director of the award-winning Advanced High School Jazz Workshop and many other courses, Erik is an accomplished trumpet player and composer. He holds a B.A. from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Erik has released several albums as a leader and has extensive experience as a sideman, working with major names from Illinois Jacquet to John Mayer. He’s even published two books of jazz duets for trumpet. Welcome, Erik! Turning to our fall schedule, I would like to highlight a new history course focused on the music of jazz icon Miles Davis. This will be of great interest to both musicians and non-musicians, with unique insights from jazz industry insider Richard Seidel. See page 30 for details! There are Jazzschool courses designed for total beginners just learning their instrument, to amateur musicians, all the way up through professional players and singers. Instrumentalists will find courses on saxophone, harmonica, guitar, piano, bass (upright and electric), drums and percussion, while vocalists have a wide variety of performance, technique and musicianship options. Ensembles range from jazz, blues, fusion, funk and soul to Brazilian, Latin and other world genres, in both small group (3–8 players) and big band formats. All ensembles culminate in a public performance at the Jazzschool. You can also study theory, improvisation, composition and arranging — and gain expert guidance from our world-class faculty on these other elements, critical to becoming a better musician. We truly offer something for everyone! A final note, and a happy one — the Jazzschool no longer requires a registration fee! The price listed with each course is the total amount due. History COOL IS FOREVER:  THE MUSIC OF MILES DAVIS

new

An exciting new interactive lecture course examines the work of Miles Davis, perhaps the most iconic and controversial of all jazz musicians. No one has contributed more to its history, been such a powerful influence on musicians all over the world, and maintained such a large audience for so long a period — nearly 70 years thus far! Miles remains as popular and acclaimed as ever, over 20 years after his death. Often called “the Picasso of Jazz,” Davis introduced more styles of jazz than any other musician — from cool to hard bop to modal to post-bop to electric jazz fusion. He was responsible for bringing to the fore or significantly furthering the careers of more jazz greats than any other leader. His music spanned the years 1945 to 1991, from his first recordings as a member of Charlie Parker’s quintet, to his final project, a hybrid of jazz and hip-hop appropriately called Doo Bop. A relentless innovator, Miles was always searching for the next thing and invariably found it. His music has something for everyone in its extraordinary variety, remaining as timeless today as when it was recorded. Class time will include stories from the studio and the road, audio and video recordings, photography, memorabilia and visual art, including Miles’ own paintings.

“Most of us played a certain way with Miles that we never played again.” — Dave Liebman

He also attended several pivotal performances by some of Miles’s greatest bands including the famed 1964 My Funny Valentine concert at Lincoln Center.

Learning how to read music, the basics of scales and harmony, the structures of rhythm, how to write a chart, count off a tune, transpose, and speak to your band as an equal participant in describing grooves and styles may seem like a big job. But, ask any singer who has developed a working knowledge of these terms and skills whether their music has been enhanced and you’ll get a resounding “YES.” This course is recommended for all singers interested in gaining a practical understanding of music theory and musicianship. Introduction Greetings friends! I’m very excited to take over this fall as the new director of the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program. I’ve already been a part of the Jazzschool fabric for years, teaching the young (and young at heart) in several different programs. But directing the JYMP is an even greater opportunity for me to help bring the joy of music to as many young people as possible. I hope to accomplish this by continuing the work that my predecessor Keith Johnson did so well; by providing fun and inspiring experiences for all levels of students; and by challenging them to constantly improve. From beginners who are just starting out, to more advanced students who can already compose and arrange their own music, I want to ensure there is a place for everyone in the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program! As always, the ensembles for young musicians are taught by some of the very best and most experienced musicians in the Bay Area, including Michael Zilber, Keith Johnson, Kasey Knudsen, Joe Bagale, Kyra Gordon, Carl Oser and myself. The program has multiple middle school jazz ensembles, high school jazz ensembles, funk ensembles, advanced high school jazz workshops, studio big bands, and for teen vocalists, both a jazz course and a pop and R&B course. In my new role, I also intend to bring in guest clinicians to work with the young musicians. And, I’ll seek out opportunities for the ensembles to perform in public, whenever possible. So please sign up for an audition, attend a concert, or contact us about a performance opportunity. Let’s continue the 16-year tradition of great music at the Jazzschool, with our support and encouragement of the next generation!

Young Musicians Program

The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program is a year-round compre hensive music education and performance program designed for instrumental and vocal students between the ages of 11 and 18. The Young Musicians Program has been at the center of the Jazzschool’s educational and artistic goals since 1997. Its curriculum provides students with the opportunity to work with professional jazz artists and educators, strengthening performance skills, expanding knowledge of jazz theory and improvisation, and learning more about the foundations of jazz and related styles of music. Students participate in afterschool classes, master classes with nationally known jazz artists, and are featured in public performances in venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

nick lamb Program Requirements (2013 – 2014) JYMP ensembles require a commitment of three quarters (fall, winter and spring). Students unable to commit to a full school year are still encouraged to audition, however priority will be given to those who can remain in the program for the entire school year. Students wishing to audition mid-year will be placed in the program based on availability of open spots in ensembles and the student’s ability level. Please note that we may not be able to accommodate all students but it is our mission to find a place for everyone if at all possible.

Young Musicians Program
