Every ye a r on the M ichigan Tech campus, as the long days o f w in te r begin to p la y on the minds o f the students, a tte n tio n focuses on the first w eek o f February. This p a rtic u la r date has lo n g been an inspiration to a ll, as it marks our tra d itio n a l W in te r

Carnival activities. O ver the years, one can see the development o f C arnival evolve fro m its e a rly beginning in 1922, to today. So much tim e year's planning fro m volved, that it w o u ld

person to fathom w h a t goes on behind-the-scenes. The guiding hand behind W in te r C arnival comes horne Blue Key, w h o masterminds the w hole scheduled of activities. They began th e ir p la n nin g last fall; we have witnessed the fru it o f th e ir la b o r in these past few days. But the c re d it fo r the success of our C arnival can n o t be given to a n y one p a rti cular group.

The m any hours o f h a rd w ork and

sacrifices endured by all the o rg a n iz a tio n s involved, bond together to present to the p u b lic the typ e of superb q u a lity they have come to expect. The various groups on campus p ro vid e d th e sculptured snow masterpieces th a t have not been equaled in size or q u a lity by any other school in the nation. As the chilling pun of the title m ight suggest, there w asn't much respite from the severe w e a th e r we endured to depict the days o f “ kn ig h th o o d in b lo o m ". For those of you who toiled on the statues in sub-zero conditions, this w as w h a t m ade our C arnival the success it was. N o w the inconveniences, disappointments and a g g ra va tio n s are things o f the past, as we can look back w ith pride a t o u r accomplishments . A ll th a t rem ains now is the fe eling o f trem endous satisfaction. To the visitors w ho came to o u r campus to p a rtake in the festivities w ith us, w e hope they w ill take home fond memories o f th e ir stay. decided th a t it w ould be a u nique idea to use p ic足 tures o f snow flakes in the construction la y o u t to show th a t the beauty o f the snow statues is, lite ra lly , more than skin deep. Institute o f M in e ra l

this idea and asked to ta ke the snow flake photos.

S now flake replicas have been m ade by dipping the snow flakes in to thin solutions o f plastic. This process is q uite d iffic u lt, since a single snowflake must be captured, d ip p e d in to a solution and re足 moved in ta ct so th a t th e snow flake w ill sublimate, leaving behind a skinlike replica. A fte r many trials and failures, the photos on this p a g e w ere obtained when a glass m icroscope slide was p ut outside and snow was allo w e d to fa ll on it. The slide was " p a in te d " w ith a clear plastic spray and examined w ith a p e tro g ra p h ic microscope. The photomicro足 graphs w ere then m ade. O u r thanks to Mrs. V irg in ia fo r th e snow flake photos.
