In 2005, the Motor City Striders decided to pass along organization of the race to the Downtown Runners and Walkers. It was also the first year that all the runners were chip timed.

Growth of the Corktown Race

After years of starting at Tiger Stadium and finishing at the Gaelic League, the course was moved to the Michigan Central Train Depot for a common start/finish in 2009. In 2010 the run and walk was combined to a 5K, which enabled the race to stay almost completely on the parade route. Organizers added a costume contest, paper-maché big heads and entertainment along with technical shirts with graphics from the College of Creative Studies to make the race a fun family event. To celebrate this year’s 30th anniversary Sunday, March 11, commemorative medals will be distributed to all finishers. With the support of the Ambassador Bridge Co., donations will also be made to CHASS, the Community Health and Social Services center in southwestern Detroit. This year’s start will feature live bagpipers, an Irish national anthem singer and special guests Dr. Ed Kozloff and Joe Parsky from the Fraternal Order of United Irishmen. - MR -
