From Rachel Watson’s point of view, Jason and Jess have the perfect life. Rachel is an alcoholic, prone to black outs, and her ex-husband is living in their old house with his new wife and daughter. Rachel passes her old house every day on her way to and from the city. Every day Rachel looks out the train window in hopes to catch a glimpse of Tom, her ex-husband. Instead, Rachel sees a beautiful, happy couple, whom she names Jason and Jess, living a few doors down from her old house. Rachel fantasizes about the beautiful life Jason and Jess share and is content with their love story until one Friday in June when she sees Jess in a romantic embrace with a man who is not Jason. Rachel’s anger at Jess is pushed aside when she reads in the paper that Jess has gone missing. Of course, can Rachel be sure? She has never even met Jess, or seen her up close, and she doesn’t even know her real name until she reads it in the paper. As it turns out, Jess is really Megan Hipwell and Jason is Scott Hipwell, her husband, and the number one suspect in her disappearance. Rachel knows she has to tell someone about what she’s seen. But who? The police, who might think her unreliable, since she had a little “hair of the dog” that morning, or Scott, the distraught husband? She doesn’t want to cause him anymore pain by revealing Megan’s possible lover, but what if the lover was the one who abducted Megan? Bringing another suspect to the police might be the only way that Rachel can be sure that Scott is cleared of any wrong doing. Tom is the good guy, a forgiving and patient husband who tried his best when Rachel turned to the bottle instead of to him when they couldn’t get pregnant. Wasn’t he the one who would tell Rachel all the trouble she caused the night before due to her drinking? Didn’t he patiently fill in the blanks that the alcohol inevitably left in Rachel’s memory? Tom was the one who fought off Rachel’s attacks, physical and verbal, when Rachel was in an alcoholic rage. Why couldn’t Rachel accept that Tom did his best but in the end, he had no choice but to leave her? When Rachel starts to show up at Tom and Anna’s house drunk, leaving notes in the mailboxes, writing emails and leaving voicemails, Tom is at his wits end. With so many lists of beauty hacks floating around on the Internet, it is hard to know which ones really do work. Here are a few I tested: 2. Using White Eye Shadow as a Primer to Make Colors Pop 1.“Cat Eye” Using a Spoon Getting that perfect “cat eye” would be a dream! I was excited to try this beauty hack using a spoon because I have a hard time making a cat eye. This was the most difficult beauty hack to do. I followed the instructions that are provided to you online and did not have much success. If you have your own method of creating a “cat eye,” I would recommend sticking with it.

I love a good eye primer, but this beauty hack is cost effective and most people have white eye shadow. I applied the white eye shadow to my eyelid and applied a pink eye shadow over it. The white eye shadow intensified the pink eye shadow. I verified this by applying only the pink eye shadow on my other eyelid. The difference was distinct. This is a great beauty hack if you do not already have an eye primer.

3. Using Mascara as Eyeliner With this beauty hack you use an angled eye shadow brush. I took one of my mascaras and used the angled brush to get some of the mascara from the wand. I applied the mascara eyeliner above my eyelashes. This beauty hack is a little tricky because you have to keep applying the mascara to get a dark enough black eyeliner look. I would have to say I would only use this beauty hack if I had to finish off a makeup look with eyeliner and did not have an actual eyeliner pencil with me.

4. Using Petroleum Jelly on Your Feet to Refresh Dry and Cracked Feet I first applied the petroleum jelly to my clean heels and feet. I put cotton socks over them and went to sleep. The next morning my feet were noticeably softer and not as cracked as the night before. Depending on how dry and cracked your feet are, you may need to do this several times; but it works! I love this beauty hack because getting pedicures in the winter is not always an easy task. Great way to keep your feet looking and feeling well cared for!

5. Using a Tissue to Place Translucent Powder over Your Lipstick to Make it Last Longer I started off with a drugstore lipstick and a luxury brand translucent power. I tested it by drinking through a straw and drinking from a cup. Each time a good amount of residue from my lipstick was left on the straw and cup. I have seen people have luck with this beauty hack, but it didn’t work for me. The success of this tip may depend upon the lipstick brand or the translucent powder brand. 8

6. Using a Toothbrush and Hairspray to Tame Flyways I was very skeptical about this beauty hack. I applied a drugstore hairspray to the bristle part of a toothbrush. My hair was in a ponytail. I fluffed it a bit to get some more flyways. I used the toothbrush with the hairspray applied and it worked! This is one of the best beauty hacks! You can purchase a brand new toothbrush to do this or just clean one of your old ones.

7. Using Baby Powder to Make Your Eyelashes Appear Longer with Mascara

I tried this beauty hack by first using a cotton swab to apply the baby powder, but felt it was easier to do using my fingertips. After applying the baby powder, I used the mascara. My eyelashes did not look longer after doing this. I also read on the baby powder container, “avoid contact with eyes.” So I recommend not trying this beauty hack, because it does not work and you should keep baby powder away from your eyes.

8. Using a Moisturizer to Lighten a Concealer or Tinted Moisturizer that is Too Dark for Your Skin Tone I have purchased many concealers and moisturizers that did not quite match my skin color. I used a drugstore brand tinted moisturizer and drugstore brand moisturizer to test this beauty hack. I first applied the tinted moisturizer in my hand to mix it with the regular moisturizer. After getting the color I thought was closest to my skin tone, I applied it all over my face. It provided minimal coverage and I recommend setting it with a powder. This beauty hack is easy and helps you not lose money on products that just are not quite the color you need. When you are doing this, it is important not to add too much moisturizer or the color can end up being too light. You can always add more! There are lists upon lists of beauty hacks out there. How to Feel at Home when Planning

By: Thom Villing eddings are singular events. No two are alike. Nor should they be. Yours or your child's wedding should be as unique as she or he is. That’s why some people prefer destination weddings. Others have them at their family church and book a country club or meeting hall for the reception. And some like the intimacy of hosting the big day right at their family home. If the thought of a home wedding has a nice ring to it, but you have visions of Steve Martin’s harrowing adventures in “Father of the Bride,” relax and remember that was only a movie. With proper planning and support, your child’s wedding will be a day to remember for a lifetime. Planning and support, however, are the operative words for a successful home wedding. While there are many highly qualified wedding planners in the area who can handle all the details for you, many people enjoy doing it themselves. This allows greater control over the details and the potential cost savings can be significant. In addition, if qualified vendors are used (caterers, photographers, rental companies, etc.), they can leverage their own experiences to provide you with valuable advice – and most of them have worked together as a team on many other weddings and events.


Start With A Budget

Like most things in life, the best place to start is with the budget. As a friend once said, “I gave my wife and daughter an unlimited budget… and they exceeded it.” In the excitement of event preparations and without careful attention, the budget might not just creep upwards; it could escalate by leaps and bounds.

Location

Next, the location of the ceremony and reception should be determined? In the summer and fall, outdoor weddings are very popular, even here in the upper Midwest. If the idea of an outdoor wedding is something you wish to consider, one of the first vendors you should contact is a tent and banquet rental supply vendor. Unless the number of anticipated invitees is exceptionally small, you will need to rent a wide variety of items, from tables and chairs to a tent and dance floor. This is where the experience of a qualified local rental company can really be helpful. Mike Sharpe, president of Aay’s Rentals, says that getting the right advice can eliminate many potential problems. “Since planning an outdoor wedding is usually an once-in-a-lifetime experience,” explains Sharpe, “the family will want to consult early on with the vendor team so there are no surprises on the big day.” Weather is, of course, the one factor over which no one has control. So even if the day proves perfectly sunny, a party tent not only protects the guests from too much sun or wind, but it is also your insurance policy against rainy weather. And it’s important to know that there is a significant difference in tent quality and installation standards. he Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) not only helps set standards for tent-wind tolerance ratings, but also provides certified training programs to assure optimal safety.

Sharpe provided this list of other questions people should consider when planning an outdoor wedding:

1. How many guests are going to be invited and how big will the bridal party be? 2. Are the grounds large enough and the facilities adequate to handle the anticipated number of guests? 3. Are food service facilities available and adequate for the event or will the food and beverages need to be catered? 4. Are the utilities (electricity, water, etc.) readily accessible and sufficient to the needs of the event? 5. Have arrangements been made to provide ample parking and will vendors have access to the areas when and where required? Once these “bigger picture” details are addressed, a more specific list of considerations should be prepared, including but not limited to:

• Sit-down (served) meal or buffet • Dance floor size • Band or DJ • Guest table preferences (round or long/ size/ number of seats) • Tables for the cake and for gifts • Types of chairs • Style of china, flatware, glassware, linens, etc. • Beverage/bar set-up • Heating or lighting equipment “One thing that is extremely valuable is to have a detailed computer (CAD) diagram prepared by the tent rental company,” Sharpe says. “There is usually little or no cost involved in this service and it can go a long way in making sure the bride and groom, the family and the vendors are all on the same page.” Of course, there are many more details that go into planning a home wedding than can be covered in this article. Decisions about your catering service and menu selection; the photographer and videographer; and florist. Sharpe’s advice on these and all service providers is simple: “Talk to people who have had home weddings. Find out what vendors they used and which ones they would recommend. Then talk to the vendors and ask them to provide references, proof of insurance and itemized estimates – and make sure they are comfortable and willing to work with each other. It needs to be a team effort. Then, once you make your selections, let each professional group do what they do best.”  SASSY | MAY 2015

The History

of

Cinco de Mayo From 1861 to 2015- A Victorious Celebration May holds a variety of holidays in the United States ranging from Memorial Day, where we remember and appreciate fallen American heroes, to Mother’s Day, a time to remember and appreciate the strong women in our life. And then there’s Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates… the Mexican army’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. If we play a game of which one of these holidays doesn’t belong, Cinco de Mayo wins by default because, well, we’re the U.S. and we weren’t fighting in the Battle of Puebla. So why exactly do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

Background of the Battle

Before we get into details of the reason for our celebration of Cinco de Mayo in America, let’s look into the details of the battle itself. Flashback to 1861, when a new president named Benito Juárez took control of a financially broken Mexico. Juárez had the misfortune of inheriting a post-war economy and made the decision to temporarily default on his loan payments to foreign nations who had sent aid to Mexico during the Reform War. Three countries in particular were unhappy with the situation: Spain, Britain and France. Spain and Britain sent officials to talk with the Mexican president and ended up settling on an agreement. France, however, was not as tolerant. Napoleon III, the ruler of France, saw the opportunity to take advantage of Mexico while they were down and sent troops across the ocean. The French force rapidly overtook Juárez and the rest of the Mexican government and began their takeover. While far less equipped than the French, a small Mexican group decided to fight back and reclaim their land. According to History.com, around 2000 Mexicans were sent to defend a small town named Puebla led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. In a shocking turn of events, the French force of 6000 men were defeated by the Mexican force. Less than 100 Mexicans were killed, while around 500 Frenchmen died in the battle. The battle was a relatively minor event in the grand scheme of the French invasion, but it was significant for the fact that it 12

was underdog victory. The Mexicans were more spirited and confident after they defeated a much more prepared and wellarmed force. Though France would not withdraw for another six years, the Mexican morale was strengthened by the victory.

Celebrations in Mexico

Cinco de Mayo is not as widely celebrated in Mexico as it is in the United States, however in certain cities there’s more excitement surrounding it. Cinco de Mayo is not a Mexican national holiday, though it is an official holiday specifically in Puebla. Popular traditions in Mexico on the fifth include military parades, reenacting battles, town gatherings with dancing and mariachi bands, and cultural food like mole poblano.

Celebrations in the United States

It’s said that Cinco de Mayo was first celebrated in Southern California in 1863. Originally, Americans celebrated the Mexican holiday as a show of solidarity against the French; However, motives changed throughout the years. The holiday truly started to gain popularity and momentum in the 1940s as there was a spike in Mexican culture and tradition in the US. The 80s were the first time that capitalism gained a foothold on the celebrations, though. Especially in the beer markets, advertisers and marketers took hold of Cinco de Mayo’s popularity and began to promote alcohol for the event. Ever since then, Cinco de Mayo’s celebration in the US has been increasingly on the rise. The holiday is more popular and celebrated in larger cities with bigger Mexican-American populations, though most cities offer events and parties to celebrate. 

giver, recipient, (or both!), take away the stress of gift expectations by spending time instead of money with these fun Mother’s Day activities:

2. Plan a Destination Staycation

Wouldn’t everyone love to celebrate Mother’s Day by jet setting to mom’s ideal vacation spot? If finances and scheduling make that impossible, the next best thing is to arrange a “staycation” day in the theme of a place of a favorite family vacation or a dream destination she’s always wanted to go to. For example, a Mexican getaway could be brought to Michiana with a Mexican feast, complete with music and decorations.

Moms have among the busiest jobs in the world and most would agree they deserve time to cater to themselves - especially for a day designated for all the work that they do! Rather than trying to have loved ones guess what they’d like to do to unwind, moms can let them know a few ideas on small things they’d love to have the time to do for themselves. They can make coupons to be redeemed - for instance, a coupon for an hour of interrupted time to read a great book.

Take a pass on the busy restaurants on Mother’s Day and instead make reservations at home to have the family prepare a meal together for her. A meal made with love at home will likely taste better to her because of the thought behind it. Plus, it’s an opportunity to spend time together making more memories while she gets to relax and enjoy the meal (while someone else does the dishes, of course!). 14

Sure, moms may love fresh flowers and appreciate the gesture, but unfortunately, the gift is short-lived. To make a gift that lasts and spend time together with an activity, have the family work together to plant new flowers for her. She can pick out her favorite flowers from a local nursery and let her loved ones take on the dirty work. Then as they bloom every year, she receives a new gift of her favorite flowers – right in her own backyard, and planted with love.

Chances are highly likely that if a mother is asked for gift ideas for the holiday, that she will say already has everything she needs. There’s one universal thing that most moms do wish they had more of: time. The family can get together to complete a project has been wanting to do, but simply hasn’t had the time, such as a do-it-yourself project or organizing family photos into scrapbooks.

yourself: Skin Cancer Awareness Month

By: Cyndy Searfoss fter a Michiana winter filled with cold, snowy gray days, the temptation to bask in the spring sun can be overwhelming. Summer, with all its outdoor activities, is just around the corner. These months are the ones most likely to see us exposed to the damaging effects of the sun.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness and Detection month so before hitting the beaches along Lake Michigan, the tennis courts, the pool or the golf course, it’s wise to take a sun safety refresher course!  Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen – every day. Experts recommend you apply it 30 minutes before

leaving the house. Look for one of the many face creams and lotions that now contain a SPF 15 or higher sunscreen. Also apply sunscreen to your arms and hands – and legs if you’re wearing a skirt or shorts. Be sure to choose one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. If you’ve found you’re sensitive to sunscreen, hypoallergenic versions are available.  Bump up your protection to an SPF 30 or higher and use a water-resistant, sweat-resistant variety if you’ll be out in the sun for extended periods of time. Re-apply every two hours for as long as

you’re in the sun. Re-apply more often if you’re sweating heavily or spend most of the time in the water.

 Stay out of the sun between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. These are the hours that the

sun’s burning rays are most intense and most likely to cause damage. Wearing sunscreen doesn’t provide absolute protection from burning or damage so plan to minimize the time you’re in the sun during these hours.  Find a nice shady spot and wear clothing that covers your skin. Long sleeves and long pants put a layer between you and the sun. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes as well as the delicate skin around them. Crow’s feet don’t need encouragement!  Don’t use an indoor tanning booth or bed. The rays are just as damaging as the sun’s rays. In fact, studies have found a 59% increase in the risk of melanoma in those who have been exposed to UV radiation from indoor tanning. Use a self-tanner or spray tan instead and follow up with sunscreen.  Be extra careful around water and sand. Their reflective properties increase the intensity of the sun’s rays and increase the risk of sunburn. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, a person’s risk of developing melanoma doubles after having sunburned five or more times.

Keep infants and small children out of the sun. Babies older than six months can – and should – have sunscreen applied when outdoors but should remain in the shade. Just one childhood sunburn doubles the risk of developing melanoma.


When asked about women who could be classified as former sun worshipers, Holly Harris, MD, a dermatologist at the South Bend Clinic noted, “There are many women in this group who no longer tan but have years of light exposure, whether it was from natural light or from a tanning bed. Unfortunately, the cellular damage that is created accumulates over a lifetime and the risk for developing wrinkles and skin cancer increases. But, it’s never too late to begin a proactive program of sunscreen, protective clothing and sun smart decisions.” She added, “There are also cosmetic procedures I recommend to help reduce the cellular damage such as laser resurfacing, chemical peels and Photodynamic therapy. Topical preparations such as antioxidants creams and tretinoin prescription medication can be very helpful.”

Taking good care of your birthday suit means more than just staying out of the sun. A head-to-toe examination should be part of your monthly routine. Make sure to look for any new suspicious spots or any changes in moles or freckles. If anything is growing, changing or bleeding, see a physician immediately. It’s also wise to see a dermatologist once a year, particularly if you have a history of sun exposure. Melanoma has cure rate of 100 percent when detected and treated early. However, untreated melanoma can spread quickly and become deadly.

It’s springtime! The days are getting longer, the weather is breaking and we are yearning to spend more time outdoors. While it’s not quite time to head to the beach, there are still some ways to focus on making the inside of your house light and bright. Here are some tips to help you shake off the winter blues and embrace spring’s promise of brighter days ahead!

Embrace The Natural Light

It’s always wonderful when you are fortunate enough to have natural light and a good view to boot, but even if your space is lacking in windows, there are still some ways to brighten it up. If you do have a window in your room, hang a large mirror on the wall across from the window to open up the space. This will reflect natural light into the room and give the allusion of more space. While you’re at it, place a lamp in front of a mirror to reflect even more light.

Change Up Your Lighting

Obviously lighting is important, but it’s all about how you light a room. If you have overhead fixtures, put them on dimmers. Dimmers are easy to install and don’t cost much, and the best part is, they let you control the mood. This can be especially helpful in the evenings when artificial light is all you have. Next, you want to be sure that you have plenty of lamps. The fact is, most people don’t have enough lighting in their home. Every space needs three to five light sources. For a space that doesn’t have a lot of natural light, it is essential to have multiple light sources. Aside from overhead fixtures, try to incorporate two or three table lamps throughout the room. Then add in a floor lamp to bring light into a dark corner. By lighting the corners of a room, you visually expand the space.

Update Your Décor

Also stick with lighter fabrics for the largerscale pieces in the room such as sofas and rugs. This will help the space seem less “visually-cluttered,” making it feel more open and airy. Speaking of light colors, there is nothing wrong with white or lightcolored walls. They offer a simplicity and crispness that can make an interior feel light and bright. The key is to not let them feel boring. 18

The thing is, it’s a lot easier to change out a pillow or a throw than it is a paint color or an important piece of furniture. If colors on the wall are done wrong, it can look cheap and juvenile. White walls are so elegant, but every wall needs character. I always love a gallery wall or an oversized mirror. For those who want a cleaner look without being boring,

try going with black and white. You can mix vintage photography and current photos, etchings, lithographs, prints, and paintings. Mix up the frame & mat sizes for an interesting arrangement. You can even make your own art by purchasing canvases at craft stores and painting random black lines on them. Get creative, mix it up because the color scheme is what is going to unite everything.


Declutter

Lastly, a great way to make a room feel open and airy is to edit. Take an inventory of all the pieces in the room and decide on things that can go. Perhaps there are too many pieces of furniture that are making the space feel closed in. Maybe there are too many accessories cluttering up the tabletop surfaces. Take everything out of the room and bring back only what’s necessary. Chances are you’ll find that there are several objects that don’t need to come back in. This editing process can really help you create a sense of more space while also making the room less visually cluttered. And the great part is that while everything is out of the room, it gives you an opportunity to do some deep spring cleaning!

Tips to Accelerate Your

Temperatures are warming and days are getting longer! Everything seems fresh and new. We get more energetic and thoughts of spring-cleaning come into mind. Here are some tips that will help you get your spring-cleaning underway without making you dread it.

1. Devise a Plan of Attack

Do not overwhelm yourself with trying to clean everything in a day or a weekend. Instead, create a list with specific cleaning tasks. For example, Mondays you clean the bathrooms and on Tuesdays vacuum the rugs/furniture. This makes everything more manageable and it will not feel like a daunting task.

2. Clean “Top to Bottom�

Whenever you clean, it is best to clean from top to bottom. If you are washing walls, starting at the top will prevent you from having to go over the walls. Working in this direction ensures the excess water streaking down the wall will be cleaned when you get to the bottom of the wall.

3. Clean your Blinds in the Bathtub with Some Dishwashing Liquid Using your bathtub to clean blinds helps decrease the amount of time it takes to clean them and provides a more thorough cleaning. Place them in the tub with some warm water and dishwashing liquid, let them soak for a minute, swish them around and then rinse them off. You can hang them outside to dry or pat them dry and hang them back up to dry.


4. Clean your Windows on a Cloudy Day

You do not need to use a fancy cleaning mixture to keep your windows from streaking. A cloudy day will aid in preventing streaks, because the heat from the sun is a culprit for streaky windows!

5.Turn your Hangers Around And after a month or longer depending upon how many items you have! If the hanger is still in the same position, it’s easy to identify what hasn’t been worn. Donate anything that has a hanger still turned around.

This is the easiest way to part with things you think you still have to have. Now you can make room for new items you will wear.

6. Change your Furnace Filter

Once you have completed your dusting, it is important to change your furnace filter. This is fairly simple to do. If the furnace filter is not changed after you dust, it will blow around the dust, so all of your hard work will be for not.

7. Using a Pillowcase to Dust Ceiling Fan Blades Using an old pillowcase, insert the fan blade into the pillowcase. Wipe the blades toward you. As you wipe each blade, dust is trapped, thus keeping it from falling elsewhere in the room. This is an effective way to minimize your cleaning time.

Coming Home to

Michiana ABC57 Anchor Colleen Bormann By: Allison Boelcke Smith

M

ichiana isn't just a stop on news anchor Colleen Bormann's career journey - it's a place she's traveled long and hard to get to. It has been years in the making, with many detours along the way, but Colleen is finally home. Osceola, Indiana native, Colleen’s news career came full-circle upon joining the ABC57 News team in March 2015 and making her way back to her hometown area. Colleen joins Brian Dorman as her weeknight co-anchor at ABC57. “Come on, Bormann and Dorman? It was meant to be,” she laughs. “I’m so excited to be at ABC57. We invest in a lot of technology resources, so we’re able to cover a lot of stories because of

our advanced technology. I work with an amazing team – we are all invested and have chemistry that viewers can notice.” Colleen has lived and worked throughout the country, from Medford, Oregon, to Indianapolis and Las Vegas, but Michiana is where she feels she truly belongs. When the offer to come back home and work at ABC57 came up, it was an easy choice. “Accepting the opportunity to tell the stories of people in the area where I’m from was a no-brainer,” said Colleen. “This is not a stepping stone, this is my home.” Colleen’s familiarity with the area gave her an advantage on her first day on the air at ABC57 News, which marked the passing of a hometown icon, Father Hesburgh.

“My first day back working in Michiana and I was thrown into the field with no script, to cover such an important local news story,” she explains. She feels her familiarity with the area allowed her to give the passing of Father Hesburgh the coverage it deserved because she understood the impact he had on the area. The drive to share important information that affects the lives of those around her has always been present in Colleen. “I think I’m lucky in that I knew my path and always had a passion for storytelling,” she says. This passion led her to uplift her roots after graduating from Marian High School and attend Ball State University in Muncie, where she received her degree in Telecommunications.


“Nothing compares to doing what you love in your hometown.” After a stint as an anchor and reporter in Medford, Oregon, she made her first trip back to Michiana as a news professional and served as an anchor and reporter for FOX 28 – WSJV. While many would agree that Colleen had indeed already “made it” in the news industry as an anchor and reporter for six years, she took a leap of faith and left her news job in 2011 to pursue her Master’s degree in Public Relations from Ball State University. “I felt it was important for me to pursue the opportunity to gain more theoretical knowledge. Getting my Master’s degree definitely opened my mind to what goes into crafting the perfect story,” explained Colleen. During her time away from the news desk, Colleen worked in public relations for different industries, including economic development and tourism for Visit South Bend/Mishawaka and the St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce, healthcare, architecture and engineering. “I believe working outside of the news industry was critical in making me a more well-rounded reporter. The ability to understand different industries has made me more effective at really diving deep into crucial information,” she says. Believing in herself and knowing where her passion and talent lies is also what Colleen recommends for other Michiana women who are determining how to proceed on their career paths: “The best piece of career advice and the philosophy I live my life by, is to always stay true to yourself. It can be hard as women to balance the pressures of work and life, but if you stay confident and work hard, you can go far in life. Decide to stay positive and dive into whatever interests you. It’s okay if it takes a while to discover your passion, and what gets you excited about getting up every day.”

Recently, Colleen got a first-hand reminder of her passion, when ABC57’s coverage of Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act was thrust into the national spotlight. The story featured a controversial comment by the owners of Memories Pizza in Walkerton, who stated they wouldn’t cater gay weddings due to their religious beliefs. "Journalism is unbiased reporting that gives all sides to a story. All sides should be heard because there is not just one opinion, especially on controversial topics. The entire scenario just emphasizes the need for journalism and reaffirms all the reasons I am a journalist," explains Colleen.

Now that Colleen is back to doing what she loves in her hometown, she is ready to squeeze in time in her busy schedule to work with local charities and organizations. “My passion is rescuing animals, and I look forward to getting involved with the Humane Society again. I also am involved with Child and Parent Services (CAPS) in Elkhart. ABC57 encourages community involvement and provides us the flexibility to go out and get involved in causes that impact local people’s lives and make a difference,” she explains. Colleen is eager to continue making her mark on the community she holds so close to her heart. “Being home in Michiana is both comfortable and exciting – it’s a part of who I am. I’m telling stories every night that impact viewers that I can also relate to. I truly care about what’s going on with these local stories. I’m also so happy to be reunited with old friends and family,” says Colleen. She recently married her husband Kevin Wilcox, and their story is another key example of why Michiana holds a special place in her heart. Wilcox is also an Osceola native – he and Colleen even grew up on the same street! “I’ve been all around the country. My previous apartment overlooked a mountain and vineyard, but to me, those attractions don’t compare to the local amenities in Michiana. Nothing compares to doing what you love in your hometown,” states Colleen empathetically. I have had a bad habit of procrastination for years. Last week, I almost lost my job over it. I think I’m finally ready to tackle this destructive pattern, but don’t have the first clue how to do it. Can you help?

Answer: Procrastination is a creativity killer, and whether or not you believe you “do your best work at the last minute,” procrastination is not healthy. There is a very simple cure for it, though it never really seems simple. Here it is: Don’t think. Just do. Yes, this is the simple cure. When you aren’t doing something you committed to doing, it’s because you talk yourself out of it for whatever reason. Use the above mantra when you notice you’re talking yourself out of it. It will work nearly every time, if you get into action by taking one baby step forward. Once you start operating that way, it will become your new habit and will be your natural response to getting things done. It takes practice, like anything else, and also some courage. 24

I’m an entrepreneur with a small business, which requires that I be physically there far more than I want to be there. I feel like I’ve built my own private little prison, when what I intended to have when I began was more time freedom. When I’m away from my business, things just don’t run right. How can I get away more without everything going to hell?

Answer: Your situation is more common than uncommon. Business owners often feel trapped in their business. There are three things necessary to create autonomy: 1. Rock solid people who work in your business. Whether you outsource or you have an in-house team of employees, it’s vital to find people you can trust to handle their area of expertise, so you don’t have to. Your team should also fill in the gap for your weak spots. To be away from your business, you must trust the people who are running it in your absence. 2. Rock solid systems. You must have developed a process that makes it easier to deliver consistent customer service, and allows people to solve problems and answer questions. These systems should be continuously analyzed and questioned as your business grows. 3. A culture of decision makers. You must empower others to use critical thinking skills to make decisions, and you must reward them for making the decision without you. Even if that decision turns out not to be the right one every time, it must be safe for the people who are actually working in the business to make mistakes. Otherwise they will not take the initiative to make a decision at all. 

Since you spend such a significant amount of time at work, it is essential for your mental and physical health to make the experience as positive as possible. Try these tips out to add a little happiness to your workday:

Start on a Strong Note

Begin your workday by determining your top one to three priorities for the day, and immediately dive into tasks that will yield the most productive results. Vow to accomplish at least one task that ties in with your priorities before you check emails. Starting off the day by checking emails is likely to get you off-course and distract you from the most important, timely tasks.

Express Gratitude

Make it a point to communicate your appreciation to others around you at work. If someone helps you out or goes above and beyond, don’t stop at a simple “Thank you” email. Instead, add some detail about why you’re grateful. It will make you both feel good and help establish a rapport with your colleagues. Also, jot down a few things that you were grateful for at the end of each day. Focusing on the positive will create a happier workplace mindset.

Acknowledge Your Accomplishments

So often, once you’re finally able to cross a project off your list, it’s barely acknowledged because it’s time to be “onto the next.” But hard work shouldn’t be ignored or else it can feel meaningless. Whenever a project is completely done, take a brief moment to acknowledge it to your colleagues with an uplifting message. If it was a solo task, take a brief mental break to enjoy your accomplishment.

Maintain Control

The happiness may be zapped out of your day if you’re constantly getting barraged with “urgent” requests. Don’t sacrifice your stress levels by taking others at their words. Instead, get some control of the situation by asking for more details, such as a specific deadline. You’ll likely find that the task doesn’t truly need immediate attention and can be scheduled to be completed at a time that is mutually beneficial. Bonus: you’re less likely to be taken advantage of if you maintain boundaries about “urgent” requests. 26

Dance Marathon at Saint Mary’s

is “For the Kids” at Riley

By: Maggie McLaughlin FTK is an initialism well known among families with children who have been cared for at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. It stands for “For The Kids” and that’s what Dance Marathon at Saint Mary’s College is for—the kids. For 10 years students here have put on Dance Marathons in the spring, collecting about $700,000 over that time for clinical care and medical research. This year’s event celebrated Riley Kids as “The Real Superheroes.”

Families from St. Joseph County and the surrounding area turn to Riley Hospital and its regional clinics more than 5,000 times each year for compassionate care, comfort and support for their children. Suzanne and Pete Letherman of Granger are the parents of Andrew, Cecilia, Patrick, and Grace, who died in 2003 of spinal muscular atrophy. This was their third appearance at the event. “For young people to be able to think about these children, and invest their time to support such a wonderful cause and organization, it’s amazing to us,” said Suzanne Letherman.

The 12-hour event included performances by student groups like Saint Mary’s a cappella group Bellacappella and the Notre Dame Irish Dance Team. There was also face painting, yoga, a glow rave, and, of course, lots of dancing. Twin eight-year-olds Katherine and Caroline Alderfer of Warsaw agreed that the best attraction was the inflatable bounce house. Katherine has been a Riley kid for more than half of her life for treatment of Juvenile Dermatomyositis. The marathon culminates with a 25 minute dance routine taught in portions throughout the event. Megan Dolan, a junior biology major, and Caitlin Kielty, a junior education major, choreographed the dance and helped keep energy levels high. Dolan’s involvement stemmed from wanting to get involved in “something that could have a greater impact on the world.” Kielty said her favorite part was hearing the families from Riley share their stories. “Their accounts are just so empowering, and really remind us what it is that we are doing, and why our work is so important,” said Kietly. Dance Marathon is more than a one-day event. There are fundraisers throughout the academic year including a 5K run/walk, apparel sales, and Give Back Nights at local restaurants. There are also mini-marathons held at local high schools. The totals are rolled into the grand total announced at Dance Marathon. This year’s total raised is $90,322. Rescued on the Runway

Bernice Simms Furry Friends Fashion Fair and Dinner

escued on the Runway,” at first one might think of the newest reality TV show, but on April 16th, “Rescued on the Runway” meant a wonderful evening of fashion and fundraising. What a great combination! Fabulous fashions, canine companions and community members coming together to help make a difference for the Humane Society of Elkhart County. The Matterhorn Conference Center in Elkhart was the host site for the Bernice Simms Furry Friends Fashion Fair and dinner. This year’s event honored Bernice Simms, who established this event 12 years ago. Bernice has been an active volunteer and leading advocate for HSEC for over 29 years. Her inspiration, teamwork and dedication as a volunteer has helped HSEC meet its daily challenges. A team of 31 volunteers worked together to make this event a memorable evening for all in attendance. The Fashion Fair was chaired by HSEC Board President Stephanie Krol and HSEC Board Member Lisa Gilkey-Schoetzow. Spring fashions from Stephenson’s of Elkhart were featured, including fashions for the office, weekend and special events. Lots of bright colors and bold patterns were seen to welcome spring to Michiana. Over 74 individuals and businesses donated in-kind items to for the silent auction and basket raffle and sponsorship from 14 businesses helped support this event. Danny Reynolds of Stephenson’s and Traci Capellman of FOX 28 added to the festivities of the evening with their presence as fashion show hosts. The runway models were from the Michiana community and were proudly escorted by their own canine companions. Many of the canines were decked out in their finest attire for this event also. An added bonus for the sold out audience was a chance to meet and pet the wonderful canines as they guided their owners through the audience.

Other highlights for the evening included a basket raffle and silent auction featuring something for everyone. All funds raised will be used towards the daily expenses of HSEC. Anne Reel, Executive Director of HSEC, spoke about the shelter, its staff and animal residents. Making sure the feline population was represented, Anne’s speech highlighted two current cats waiting for adoption. Adara and Blaze were brought into the shelter with 2nd degree burns on their bodies. The teamwork of the staff turned this sad beginning into a success story with their two month devotion toward nursing them back to health. Today, they are healthy and happy in the adoption center and waiting for homes to call their own. HSEC is a private non-profit located in Bristol, IN. This shelter admitted approximately 4,700 animals in 2014. Its programs include support the Elkhart County area with animal control services. Homeward Bound 5K Run/Walk It was an amazing sight! On the morning of April 11th, superheroes were seen running throughout Northeast neighborhood of South Bend. They were putting their super powers to use to raise awareness for affordable housing and raise money for homeless in St. Joseph County by participating in the 8th Annual Homeward Bound 5k Run/walk. Homeward bound, a part of the Indiana Association for Community and Economic Development is a series of annual events that take place in communities throughout Indiana to raise funding for and awareness about affordable housing and homelessness. The St. Joseph County Chapter, Chaired by Duane Wilson, is an effort of four local agencies whose mission is to address the needs of this population. For the five years the Robinson Community Learning Center hosted the event, they have partnered with Habitat for Humanity, Hope Ministries, Hannah’s House and Bridges Out of Poverty collaborate to impact the community. Superheroes from the student governments of four local colleges were recruited to help with the cause. Excited to fight poverty, Scott Hancock of IU South Bend, Lauren Vidal of the University of Notre Dame, McKenna Schuster of Saint Mary’s College, Jacob Busscher of Bethel College served as honorary chairs and brought students from their school to join in the fun. Additionally, the University of Notre Dame’s Marching Band came to help get the superheroes energized and ready to run or walk. Whole Foods brought bananas and water to keep the participants hydrated. The registrants were greeted with free Starbucks Coffee provided by Hammes Bookstore and Café on Eddy Street The participants could not have asked for a better spring day to run and walk. The day would not have been possible without the help of numerous volunteers, staff and all of our amazing sponsors collaborating together. CAPS Superhero 5K and Sidekicks Family Fun Run Even The Avengers couldn’t assemble this many heroes! More than 500 runners, walkers and dogs came out to Studebaker Park in Elkhart on April 11th for the first-annual CAPS Superhero 5K and Sidekicks Family Fun Run. The event is the new centerpiece of April for Child and Parent Services, an Elkhart-based nonprofit that works to prevent child abuse by working with children and families in seven different programs. Since April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, CAPS wanted to organize an event that could bring families together and celebrate the power of ordinary people to be superheroes for kids.

In keeping with the superhero theme, hundreds of people showed up to run or walk in comic book T-shirts, socks, shoes, masks and capes. A devoted group from Elkhart’s Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum came out in full costumed splendor representing their favorite comic heroes (including Hall of Heroes owner Allen Stewart as Captain America) to take photos with children and families.

4 ABC 57 morning anchors Brian Dorman and Colleen Bormann pulled double-duty for the race, acting as emcees and running in the 5K as well. Before the races started, CAPS CEO and President Candy Yoder thanked everyone for supporting the families of Elkhart County by raising funds and awareness for CAPS through their involvement in the day’s events. She also said that everyone has the ability to be a superhero in a child’s life through mentoring, teaching, lending a sympathetic ear or helping a child in danger of abuse or neglect.
