The

Short By Kathy Friend

For years, we were told that shorts were too casual for 9 to 5…until this year. Shorts are a huge trend this season. Shorts of all varieties: short shorts, denim shorts, walking shorts, short suits. I have long believed that I just don’t look good in shorts. I am more of a skirt person. This season, I have changed my mind. And, yes, if that makes me a slave to fashion, so be it. But, can anyone wear shorts? The fast answer is ‘yes’! But, of course, it is important to know how they should fit, and to choose the right style for your body shape.

ABOUT FIT…

In trying to get shorts just right, you must consider the fit both vertically and horizontally. Let’s first chat about the horizontal fit. If your shorts have side pockets, the pockets should lie flat on your hip. The bottom line on this is: be sure they aren’t too tight! The shorts should be loose around your hip and not bind at your midsection. Likewise, the leg opening should be ample for your leg. These fit components are key in making sure your shorts look ‘I’m ready for a glass of Pinot Grigio!’ instead of ‘Take me out to the ball game’. Next, a few words about the vertical fit. Many times, we will put on shorts and think, “…ewwww!” The reason might very well be the length. If the length is a wee too short…ewwww. Or, if a smidge too long…ewwww. There are three places shorts should hit your leg: when your arms are at your side, the point where your fingertips hit your leg (mid-thigh), at the bottom on your hamstring where your leg naturally is the thinnest (shorty shorts) or an inch above your kneecap (walking shorts).

10 June 2013 | SASSY

Story

MID-THIGH

This style will look good on everyone. It hits at the bottom of your thigh muscle, at the thinnest part of your upper leg, thus making your leg look slimmer. This is a great style to try in a print.

WALKING SHORT (or Bermuda)

This mid-waisted classic is something perhaps your mother had (or has!) in her closet. But that’s okay, because this wardrobe staple is a classic. This style looks best on someone who wants to camouflage their upper leg. The key to making this style look sophisticated is the shoe. Wearing a higher heel, like a wedge or platform, will elongate your leg and make the proportion of the longer shorts look perfect! Think of this style as a pant alternative for summer. Pare your Bermudas back with your favorite summer blazer, and look like you’ve walked off the cover of a fashion mag!

Shorty shorts look best on petite frames (under 5’3”). That is, of course, unless you haven’t yet celebrated your 30th birthday! If youth is on your side, then you can pull off this look in a big way! Since this style can have a very youthful vibe, to keep it age appropriate, make sure the proportion is in line with your stature. This is a fun style to try in a bold color like a neon or even in a super-casual fabric like linen or denim.

Boost

Your Heart-Healthy Ranking By Susan Szczechowski, RD, CDE

These days, it’s all about rankings and ratings. Having a low batting average, or not making a ‘hit’ when you’re at the plate, not only results in a lower draft pick but can be a drag on your health and energy. Up to bat at the plate, making choices from all the foods pitched to you can be confusing. You can improve your average and your health by including a good balance of lean protein, some starch, fruit, low-fat dairy and plenty of vegetables.

Below are some suggestions to build your score and hit one out of the park! • Fish, especially salmon and tuna, are a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids which helps to reduce cholesterol, triglycerides and inflammation, all of which are associated with a higher risk of heart disease. • Dark colored berries like blueberries are high in anti-oxidants which protect your heart and vessels from damage. Damaged areas are where fat likes to attach and build blockages. • All nuts contain heart-healthy fat and fiber, but walnuts have taken the lead in good quality antioxidants. Fiber helps to lower cholesterol and is very filling. • Dark green, leafy vegetables like kale are great. Popeye may have liked spinach, but kale is at the top of the league because of fiber, anti-oxidants and potassium content. Potassium can help control blood pressure which is a big factor in developing heart disease. Some people may have to control their intake of dark green, leafy vegetables if taking a blood thinner like Coumadin or Warfarin, because 12 June 2013 | SASSY

greens are also high in Vitamin K which helps blood clot. Seek advice from your doctor. • Nonfat dairy products such as milk or yogurt are a good source of protein, calcium, Vitamin D and potassium. These nutrients are beneficial for your heart and bones.

There are some strike outs that contribute lots of saturated fat and calories that you should limit or avoid for heart health: • Processed meats like bacon and sausage are high in saturated fat and salt. Both of these work against heart health. • Gravy and sauces like Alfredo sauce or cheese sauce are detrimental. Lower fat versions can be made by using proper ingredients. • Breaded and fried foods aren’t good, either. The breading can be high in salt and acts like a sponge, soaking up the fat. You can occasionally fry foods at home using a heart-friendly oil like canola, olive or peanut and avoiding salt in the coating mix. Beware: you are still getting extra fat and calories! Making wise choices at the plate can help you connect to the power of healthy eating. It will keep your heart and body fueled to swing through summer and run for seasons to come! Living Wholeheartedly… One Day at a Time

By Noelle Elliott

The order of my list is very telling. This same list could represent where my priorities lie; like most women, I found myself at the bottom.”

To be wholehearted

is not an action that comes easily for me. I prefer to multi-task several things at once. Perhaps I miss some details, but the bottom line is that a lot of things get done. I stopped striving for perfection after my second child. I find it difficult to dedicate my whole heart to something – ONE thing – when there are several things that ‘need’ my attention all at once. This results in me completing several tasks halfheartedly. And, despite finishing several things, at the end of the day I still I feel like I have missed something. I was in a meeting recently at work and a female colleague burst into the room frantic and harried, clearly overburdened between her home, work, husband and whatever else she had agreed to take on. I watched as another woman next to me texted someone and missed an entire chunk of the presentation that would have helped her later. Our society has this misconception that being frantic equals being productive. It’s believed that if I play the part of a hard worker, then everyone else will believe it. But even I could see that the texter next to me was making it worse for herself by not making the choice to be fully present and work wholeheartedly at the task at hand. Later, I decided to scribble down the things that matter most to me. If I could devote my full attention daily to each of these things, I wondered what could happen.

My list read like this:

1. Children 2. Marriage 3. Work 14 June 2013 | SASSY

4. Family 5. Friends 6. Me

The order of my list is very telling. This same list could represent where my priorities lie; like most women, I found myself at the bottom. The point to living wholeheartedly is to give each of these categories equal and quality time, allowing them all to be of equal importance and value. I feel guilty even suggesting that giving myself attention is just as important as giving my children attention, but it is true. I decided to attempt this list on a Saturday. My job requires me to work some weekend evenings, so I knew it would be a perfect day to attempt to live wholeheartedly. It began with Saturday morning breakfast. Pancakes signify weekends in our home and, despite wanting to place frozen waffles on my family’s plates, I decide to happily make the pancakes. I asked my oldest son to help me. He was ecstatic. I didn’t check my phone; I just focused on teaching him how to flip pancakes. I let my husband sleep in. When he woke up, I didn’t give him a list of things I wanted him to do that day. Instead, I asked him how he slept, and I listened. I didn’t clean the kitchen as he talked – I stopped what I was doing and looked into his eyes. I also decided that I was going to take a yoga class that morning. This proved to be difficult as I walked past the four bins of dirty laundry, but I chose to do something for myself. There will always be laundry: it’s inevitable! I began to apologize to my family for leaving and stopped midsentence. Although it was hard, I left my phone at home and focused completely on myself for two hours. I even stopped and got a coffee. When I got home, I decided to call my mom. She is grieving the sudden loss of her brother and I had been avoiding talking about it with her for fear that it may take up too much time. When I called her I asked how she was doing, she gave me a canned answer. I asked her again how she was doing. This was the question she needed to allow herself to let go. All I did was listen without distraction. Being wholehearted is as simple as that.

At my work function that evening, I approached it with a different attitude than usual. Rather than wishing to be anywhere else, I decided to be completely present in what I was doing. By not wanting to be somewhere other than where I was, it made it more enjoyable. It also gave my co-workers the impression that I was happy, which makes everyone else happy.

I didn’t get around to calling my friends, however. Trying to squeeze everything into one

The secret to having everything you want is to begin with being grateful for what you already have.” day was harder than I had thought. When you live wholeheartedly, you discover that there is more that you notice. In giving my whole heart to something, I was surprised to discover how full it made me feel. The secret to having everything you want is to begin with being grateful for what you already have. Sometimes taking the time to devote your whole heart to one thing at a time is all it takes to remind you that your heart is already full of the things you need – you just have to take the time to notice them.

cONVERSATION

Starters By Andrew Skipper

Sometimes just one piece can start a lively dialogue, leading to a memorable time! I'll look for any excuse to throw (or go to!) a party. But connecting people who don't know each other is one of my favorite reasons to open my home up to guests. Nothing brings me more joy than introducing one of my friends to another friend and watching their friendship grow over time. After all, I met some of my closest friends at dinner parties, cocktail parties and luncheons that were hosted by our mutual friends. When making introductions between my friends who don't know each other, I find it useful to have some stand-by conversation pieces in my home to help facilitate a dialogue, especially if I'm busy pouring drinks or finishing up the appetizers! By stepping out of the ‘decorating box’, you, too, can rely on unique objects in your home to be conversation pieces that will lead the way to new and lasting relationships.

Fun and Funky...

Geoffrey Bennison once said, "Always put something mad on top of something very good, or something very good on top of something mad." This interesting vase by Jonathan Adler resting atop an antique solid brass stand certainly embodies that concept. Known for his ‘happy chic’ accessories, Adler created this vase to evoke a reaction. One thing is for sure: it is unique and definitely elicits a response! Watch the conversation start as guests ask where you got it!

Tell Me More...

Let's Get Personal...

Displaying photos is a sure way to spark conversation. Whether they are family photos, pictures from your travels or images of favorite memories, each photo has a story to tell. The home should be a personal place, and telling your story through images is a great way to show someone who you are and what you care about.

Have you ever been to a dinner party where the conversation suddenly stopped short? Well, that wouldn't have been the case if you had been eating off of these plates from Department 56. With a border of questions such as, "What historical time period would you most like to visit?", the conversation is sure to never waver. Having dinner with intimate friends? No worries! Some questions are deeper than others, like "If you could do one thing over, what would it be?" followed by the more probing, "Why?"

®

YOU HAVEN’T SEEN A RESALE STORE LIKE THIS

Let Them Read You...

The personal objects really tell guests about the inhabitants of the home in which they find themselves. Books tell people about our interests, dreams and aspirations. They are also a great conversation starter. Leave a stack of decorating books on the coffee table and watch your guests pick them up and peruse the pages, remarking how much they admire this style or that pattern. Fill an open bookshelf with volumes of poetry and listen to your friends tell of their favorite poet, and perhaps even recite a beloved poem. Books certainly do connect us with the past, as well as with other people and, perhaps most importantly, ourselves.

Going Somewhere?

Displaying objects from your travels is a great way to get the conversation started. Unique pieces such as this didgeridoo from Australia are always topics of conversation. I purposefully leave it sitting out and, without fail, it elicits the most interesting comments and questions from people. “What is it?” “Where is it from?” “How do you play it?” “When were you in Australia?” Even if you haven't traveled the globe, pick up unique mementos on a day trip. The whole point is to acquire things that have a story. Not only will these objects mean something to you, they'll also be fun stories to tell to your guests!

To BOLDLY Go... to Target By Jane Suter

Warning: what you are about to read is a breath of fresh, crazy, hilarious air in the midst of our professional businesswomen's magazine. It is not for the faint of heart or for those with no sense of humor. If you're afraid of a massive attack of laughter, proceed with caution. ~The Sassy Magazine Administration

I

was standing in line at Target today. As we all know, Target is the sacred temple of all that is good and right in this world. In fact, given the choice between a date with David Beckham and a shopping spree at the big bull'seye, I'd probably have to toss a coin. However, sometimes evil seeps into this holy place and ruins a perfectly amazing afternoon of filling my cart with crap that I don't need. Like today.

It all started in the checkout line. In front of me was some 20-something-year-old chickie who decided that the process of swiping her credit card wasn't going along at the warp speed she was expecting. So what does she do? She starts losing her twitterin' mind all over the cashier. Now, before I continue, want to know what Crazy was wearing? Yeah, I thought so: neon green sneakers with pink, sparkly laces, black spandex shorts that were clearly purchased in the toddler department, a fuchsia halter top that scarcely concealed the twins and a pair of humongous hoop earrings that jutted out from her purple hair. Anyhoo, as she simultaneously yammered out loud to the Star Trek contraption affixed to her ear and tapped her MasterCard impatiently on the counter like a gerbil obsessively gnawing, she rolled her eyes wildly and set her mouth on full-phaser blast: "Why is this takin' so long? I want to see a man-A-gerrr! Do you know what you're doin', LADY? I gots things to do here..." 18 June 2013 | SASSY

Oh goody – a show! Privately, I was betting that her Bluetooth somehow crossed beams with the card scanner, bashed into her abhorrent grammar and, in the confusion, caused a vortex of such mass proportions that the entire grid went down in a fiery implosion. In addition, I also began fighting this space alien in my head. Do you ever do that? Conduct a conversation in your mind where the other person is not actually participating? I do it all the time. Mine went like this: Hey, Lieutenant Uhura Fussy-Pants! Stop vaporizing the poor cashier! Are you aware that this whole transaction is MAGICAL?! In .0008 seconds your card’s information zipped through the air, bounced off a few satellites – IN OUTER SPACE – and zoomed back. It's paranormal! And that doo-hickythang attached to your ear? That's magic, too. Right at this very minute you are talking, loudly, to a real, live person who isn't even here! So honestly, are you going to harsh this nice clerk for not being mystical enough, or are you going to marvel at the many unicorns of technology that lie before you? Now, turn off your communicator, tell the checkout woman to live long and prosper, and stop being such a rotten Klingon! Tickled with my inner diatribe, I suddenly said something out loud. I know. I know. I should have just kept my mouth shut and continued to gently caress my new Nate Berkus throw pillow, but resistance was futile. Out came, “Ya' know ... when you think about it, it's kind of amazing how fast this all really is. Why don't you just try to swipe your card again and see what happens”? In unison, the entire line of red shopping cart commanders behind me gasped. Then, like tourists from another galaxy, they pretended to be invisible. The impulse items that lined aisle #4 were suddenly super incredible. Look, nail clippers! One guy even nervously grabbed the first thing he saw from the rack and fake-read it. The reason I know it was a bogus grab is because I have never met a Marine, dressed in full camo, with Semper Fi tattooed across his bulging biceps, who urgently needed to read the back of a pink polkadot Tampax carrying case. Obviously alone in this universe, with no Scotty to beam me up, Crazy turned her wrath on me. “Hey Lady,” (Lady. Again. Really?) “why don't you just mind your own bizzz-ness and back off!” Entirely aware that I am a big, fat coward, I made it so until she left my orbit. The Federation was still slightly unstable, yet strangely calmer with her absence. As I departed Target, the final frontier, I realized that my voyage was far more than a forty-five-year mission. Sure, I explore new worlds. I meet strange, new people ... and a few weirdos. And, every once in a while, I boldly go where no shopper has gone before. However, after this particular encounter, I will draw the line here. Here with the spoiled, purple-haired, impatient loud-mouth. HERE, Sir! And with that, I am out. Set a course for home, please. Which favorite dishes complement the featured wine on the tour? . The William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with any of our red sauce dishes and has enough body for the sausage saccottini. The William Hill Chardonnay pairs well with the hand-battered calamari, the homemade mozzarella sticks and the Tony Russo pizza. Esperto Pinot Grigio will pair best with the seafood pasta, lobster ravioli and chicken Caesar salad.

About the owner

Paul was born in Italy and came to the United States with his family at the age of five. Growing up in an Italian home, he learned to cook by ‘osmosis’. His mother is his inspiration, and Paul refers to her as his ‘walking cookbook’ because she remembers recipes at the snap of a finger. In 1979, Paul’s brother and father opened Bruno’s Pizza. In 1995, Paul and his family took over the business and renovated the building to start what is now Antonio’s. Paul wanted to focus on more than just pizza and to provide the community with authentic Italian food, giving others the experience of the Italian tastes and aromas he had with every meal while growing up.

Queen of Swords:

Grace Hartigan

By Cheryl K. Snay

In 1952,

a tarot card reader told Grace Hartigan (1922– 2008) that it was “all obstacles for the Queen of Swords.” Four times married and called a lousy mother, Hartigan overcame poverty, sexism and the cut-throat art market in post-war New York to be counted among American painting’s avant garde elite. Here’s the tale of how she survived cowardly critics, the proverbial ‘knife between her shoulder blades’, her own son’s disapproval and jealousy and the mercurial dealers who played struggling artists against each other.

Grace Hartigan, The King is Dead, 1950, oil on canvas, 65 x 96 ½ inches. Snite Museum of Art: Acquired with funds provided by Mr. Al Nathe, 1995.023.

Hartigan grew up in a working-class family in New Jersey and, although her parents recognized that she was special, they could hardly afford to nurture her talent or accommodate her restless nature. She married at 19 and gave birth to a son, Jeff, nine months later in 1942. Then her new husband left to serve in World War II. She raised Jeff alone and divorced in 1947. To learn a marketable skill and satisfy her artsy side, she took classes at night in mechanical draftsmanship where a fellow student showed her the work of French artist Henri Matisse. Inspired, she thought, “Yeah, I can do this,” and she began to educate herself by visiting museums and galleries. On one of her jaunts to the galleries in 1948, she saw the monumental all-over drip paintings of Jackson Pollack and was smitten. She visited him at his farm on the south shore of Long Island and became friends with him and his wife, Lee Krasner. The King is Dead (1950), an oversized, abstract expressionist work, shows the impact of Pollack’s art on the young artist Hartigan. The paint extends to the very edges of the canvas with no recognizable subject matter – no matter how hard you try, there really isn’t any ‘thing’ to see. Instead, the subject of the painting is just that – paint! Hers is a euphoric revelry in the physicality of the medium: its viscosity, its transparency, its color and its mass. Lines and shapes pulse across the surface in a riot of hues. A major difference between Pollack and Hartigan, however, is the control that she always maintained over paint. While Pollack liked to rely on chance, dripping, splattering and throwing the paint around with wild abandon, Hartigan always used a brush, a rag or a knife to move the color around the canvas with conviction. In her journal, she wrote, “It seems that I must first make complete chaos on a canvas before I can find any order.” (17 April 1951) It may look like she left The King is Dead in a chaotic state, but further reflection reveals an even distribution of tone and color across 26 June 2013 | SASSY

the surface, and repeated shapes and gestures guide our attention from left to right, in a reading pattern. In conventional art, blue generally recedes and is purposely used to help create the illusion of three-dimensional space on a twodimensional surface. Here, she bucks convention and makes the blue advance by layering it on top of the reds and blacks and whites. Hartigan saw that there were many unexplored ideas in The King is Dead (1 June 1951), but she felt that all-over painting had run its course, and she

It seems that I must first make complete chaos on a canvas before I can find any order.”

returned to the figure, albeit abstractly. She vacillated between these two modes throughout the rest of her career. This raised the ire of her abstract expressionist friends who felt betrayed by her decision, calling her weak and cowardly. There were so few women artists in the 1950s that you would think they would band together for support. But, no. A master of the back-handed compliment, her friend Joan Mitchell ‘praised’ Hartigan for having the “courage to make such ugly paintings.” For her part, Hartigan stuck to her guns, writing, “I don’t know what I’m after but whatever it is, if I must look conservative, reactionary, timid or even (horrors) feminine in the process, then it must be. I think I know how really strong I am.” (6 June 1952) Hartigan chafed at the notion of ‘women’s art’. She considered herself one of the boys. She worked as hard as they did. She suffered as much as they did. She

resisted clichés about what women’s art looked like, hissing about two of her paintings, “[they] seem tremendously feminine in their color – which of course I detest.” (25 April 1951) Hartigan’s efforts were rewarded and one might say her career launched when the critic Clement Greenberg and the art historian Meyer Shapiro selected her to be included in the exhibition New Talent at the Kootz Gallery in New York in 1950. By 1953, the influential curator Alfred Barr purchased a Hartigan painting for the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, thereby establishing her as part of the abstract expressionist pantheon. Despite continuing solo exhibitions and regular gallery representation, sales were meager. The market was fickle. Her small paintings sold for $50; larger canvases, for about $100. She scraped by. Doubt and guilt occasionally make an appearance in her journal. One day, the entry simply reads, “Who am I?” On another, she lamented her son’s inability to come to grips with his parents’ divorce and his mother’s career choice. He resented her painting. Finally, unable to cope with the distraction of his tantrums, she sent him to be with his father who was then living in California. Male artists who had ‘abandoned’ their families in pursuit of their art, such as Paul Gauguin, were considered geniuses. Hartigan was labeled a lousy mother. The critic who discovered her turned on her, and she called him on it. Greenberg, the same guy who chose her work for a groundbreaking exhibition of American art, later complimented her blandly to her face at parties, and mocked her behind her back. She wrote him a letter, accusing him of being a “frivolous cocktail critic” and inviting him to “put up or shut up” – dangerous words to someone who arguably controlled her destiny in the market.

Pulse FM/ WHME

Abstract expressionism fell out of favor and was replaced in the 1960s by the pop art of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Hartigan married a scientist who taught at Johns Hopkins University and moved to Baltimore in 1965. There she took a position at the Maryland Institute College of Art and became the grande dame of painting. Her dictum, “To shock the bourgeois is easy; to shock the ‘avant garde,’ that’s the thing. To shock oneself is the most important of all,” (6 November 1951) are words to live by. What will you do to shock yourself?

COVER STORY

CROSSing The Finish Line… Kendra Cross: Living with Purpose Photo Credit: Classic Image Photography

By Stephanie J. Salisbury

I was on a motorcycle, I didn’t own a skirt and my skin looked like a sausage pizza.” –Kendra Cross

Sound intriguing? You bet. Even more intriguing when you consider the fact that Kendra Cross has nearly built an empire Mary Kay independent beauty consultant, has earned sixteen pink cars, thirteen of which were Cadillacs and, now in her last year before retirement, just picked up the black one she earned last week at Tom Naquin Chevrolet. She admits to having a little difficulty finding where she parked it, because she’s never had a black car… When you first meet Kendra, you can tell immediately there’s something different about her. It’s not just that she appears to be at least two decades younger than she actually is; it’s that she notices you. She listens. I mean, really listens. I sat down to interview her and she said, “Tell me your story.” Definitely not the way my typical interviews begin! But Kendra lives with purpose and intentionality, and it permeates every aspect of her life. After turning down the offer to be a part of Mary Kay six times, Kendra finally signed a reluctant ‘yes’, mostly because of the persistence of the woman asking. “All I wanted was fifty bucks a week! Now, I haven’t made a car or insurance payment for 32 years. We watched the sunset at 11:45 in St. Petersburg, Russia, kissed the Blarney Stone, climbed the bridge on my 60th birthday in Sydney, zip-lined in Maui, toured the Blue Mosque in Istanbul – this year we’ll be in Beijing and Hong Kong.” Beyond pink cars and world travel, Mary Kay has had much more to offer Kendra and other women. “It has been the bridge for me to become more of the woman God has designed me to be. It has given [women] the opportunity to grow and not allow the same old status quo. It is such a stretching kind of business with absolutely no floor and no ceiling, so there is no end to what you can do… but no guarantees, either. You take a risk every single day. Just showing up doesn’t mean you’re going to make money, but you keep doing the right thing for the right reason. Mary Kay is founded on the principles of God first, family second, business third, and on the golden rule. They fund research against cancers in women, fight domestic abuse and support local shelters and take a stand against dating violence. Mary Kay is very proactive when it comes to issues for and about women. It’s so empowering to me to know that I’m working for a company as an independent contractor that shares the same values I have, and I don’t have to hold back.” Although, meeting Kendra, you’d never get the impression that she would hold back on anything! Born in May 1948 in York, Pennsylvania and attending a Mennonite high school, it was that particular connection that brought her to Goshen College where she met her future husband, Bob, graduated in 1966 and married in 1971. After years thinking she’d never be able to have a child, she was finally pregnant at age 31. “I was so sick, and I thought, ‘if I don’t get up and create this business and work three appointments a week, I’ll use up our savings, languish in bed, birth the child and what? Put him in daycare? Then miss him sitting up for the first time?’ That’s when I realized what it meant to be purpose-driven. I built this business because I wanted to have an impact on these kids God gave us to raise.” Now her two boys, Jesse Robert Crist Cross, 34, and Jordan Robert Crist Cross, 32, have both graduated from Purdue (“…with straight teeth and no debt!”), live in Indianapolis and revamp houses to rent out.

Living debt-free is one of the most amazing experiences. You need to plan for the future so, when you’re my age, you’re not saying, ‘I hope we get to go out to dinner this week’.”

One of the most important life lessons Kendra could have taught them is how she and her husband have lived for over twelve years now: debt-free! “Living debt-free is one of the most amazing experiences. You need to plan for the future so, when you’re my age, you’re not saying, ‘I hope we get to go out to dinner this week’. You’ll know that your future is secure; live below your means so that you can give. That’s our heart as a couple – to be able to give back to the community financially. I see this amazing income that has been provided to us to be able to be used to make a difference.” When I speak of her accomplishments, Kendra has this amazing way of shifting the spotlight onto other people. It’s not about her – it’s about every person she comes in contact with. “When my OnStar girl comes on in the car, I say ‘Tell me what’s the best thing that’s happened to you today’. In a restaurant, I come in, sit down,

advice from a business coach

Dear Charrise... Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to break out and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY business coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!

A few years ago, I started a small business as a virtual assistant. I wanted to have more time flexibility and to work from home. So far, it’s been a wild ride! At first, it was difficult getting clients to hire me because I had no real track record. Now I’ve established some momentum and I’m starting to get referrals. I’m almost busier than I want to be. My fear is that my business will grow so fast that I won’t be able to keep up with it. How can I balance good cash flow and time freedom?

I manage a team of six people and, for the most part, we work together well as a team. There is one person whose performance on the team is marginal. When he contributes, his view is mostly negative. He always seems to take the role of devil’s advocate. Sometimes that is good, though others on the team tend to roll their eyes when he speaks up. I want to hear his opinion, but not at the expense of creating a top performing team. How can I change this?

Charrise Says

Charrise Says

This is a common concern among entrepreneurs. Momentum is always a great thing for a business owner to experience. It means you’re doing a lot of things right. It also can create stress if you’re not ready for the growth.

If his behavior is unacceptable, you must clearly let him know that. People crave leadership, and perhaps his behavior is simply a cry for help. As the team leader, you must directly address what’s going on.

It’s logical for you to be concerned about your time, since that was one of the biggest reasons for starting your own business. It can be a misnomer, however, that entrepreneurs have more time freedom, unless you’re willing to put up strict boundaries about when you will and won’t work.

My favorite principle of Steven Covey’s is: Seek first to understand, then be understood. If you were to ask him what he loves and what he dislikes about the team dynamic, what would he say? The best way to find out is to open up a powerful dialogue with him. You may find that he is generally unhappy in his job. If that’s the case, it’s up to him to determine what needs to change for him to be happy.

One of the best elements of entrepreneurship is that you can choose the work you take on and the work you let someone else do. Do you have clients you’d like to fire? Do you say ‘yes’ to work you don’t really want to do? What if you raised your rates as demand increases and took on only the work you’d love to do? Another idea may be to outsource. You could do this by adding members to your team or by subcontracting work out. This is definitely an important business decision, as you may not want to manage people. When all else fails, always return to your initial vision. Remind yourself why you’re in business and what you wanted to create. Your vision may have morphed into something else, and that’s perfectly fine. Stay true to your core desires and build your business around the lifestyle you want to create. The more you are clear about your objectives, the easier it will be to make the big decisions about growing your business.

Two of the most vital factors for a team to work well are trust and respect. When your people trust that it’s a safe place to share their view, and when diverse viewpoints are heard and respected, your team will be cooking with gas. Creating a team that performs well together can require a delicate balance of collaboration, conviction, creativity and kindness. Everyone must pull their weight and add value or team productivity suffers. What are you willing to put up with? What you tolerate becomes your culture. Inaction has as much impact as action. 

What sets your course apart from the rest? It’s easy to say that our customer service is outstanding, but I think that a lot of that comes from the fact that we are family owned and operated, which is unique to the area. Most of the other courses are city owned or private country clubs. We are fortunate to be in a business where our customers want to be here so that makes coming to work everyday fun. The course itself is also designed well for all levels of golfers. We also do a great job with our Learn to Play Programs including our Junior Golf, Ladies Programs and we were awarded the National Player Development Award in 2010. Additionally, we were honored to be selected as the Indiana Course of the year in 2009 by the National Golf Course Owners’ Association based on quality of management, contributions to the community as well as the overall course itself.

Fore! Treating Acute Golf Injuries

E

ven casual golfers know that if someone on the course yells, “fore” it’s time to duck and cover. But have you ever wondered where the term fore originated? Fore is another word for ‘ahead’ (think of a ship’s fore and aft). Yelling fore is simply a shorter way to yell, “Watch out ahead!”

The purpose of this article isn’t the history of golf, but to discuss ways to avoid and treat golf injuries by looking ahead. Last month, we identified overuse injuries which occur over time as repeated golf swings place stress on our muscles, tendons and joints.

By Brian Ratigan, M.D.

swelling and improve healing time. Elevation recruits gravity to help move fluid causing the inflammation out of the affected area. Anti-inflammatory medicines can also be helpful. If you are hit in the head with a golf ball or club with enough force, you may suffer a skull fracture or concussion. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms: headache, sensitivity to noise and light, confusion, lightheadedness and/or dizziness, problems with balance, nausea, blurred vision or ringing in the ears.

This month, we will focus on acute injuries, which are usually the result of a single traumatic incident, such as getting hit by an errant golf ball. Golf is perceived as being a low-risk sport, but understanding the risk of injury and how to identify and treat these injuries will make the game more enjoyable the next time you’re on the course.

In the Rough: Hitting the Ball Fat

Tee Shot: Keep Your Eye on the Ball (and Your Partner’s Club!)

This can cause an acute injury in the wrist or hand, with the wrist injured three times more frequently than the hand. The lead wrist (left wrist in right-handed golfers) is most at risk. This often occurs in amateurs due to hitting the ball fat, or hitting the ground before the ball. Treatment usually consists of rest, splinting, ice and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines. Physical therapy is often recommended and includes stretching and strengthening exercises. In some cases, steroid injections will help to ease inflammation and swelling that does not diminish with more conservative treatment.

Truer words were never spoken! The tee box is one of the most dangerous areas on the course. You are at risk of a wild tee shot, a ball ricocheting off an obstacle like a tree, sign or golf cart, or even being hit by a golf club. Errant backswings or a club thrown in anger or disgust are injuries waiting to happen. Being hit by a ball or club will leave an impact injury. These can be as simple as a soft tissue injury to the muscle or as severe as a bone fracture. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a bruise and a break. In both injuries, the impact area will be discolored and swollen. In the case of a full break, there could be skin deformity. Both injuries will be painful, but a break is usually a sharper, more intense pain. The only way to confirm a break is with an x-ray. If you are concerned that you have suffered a fracture, see your doctor and get an x-ray right away. As with many athletic injuries, use the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate) treatment method to reduce pain and swelling. If possible, apply an ice pack immediately to the affected area for about 15-20 minutes. This will reduce the

Wrist injuries commonly occur at the impact point of the golf swing and may result from hitting an object other than the ball, such as a root or rock. This bone-jarring injury is the result of the sudden change in load applied to the club, resulting in tissue disruption to the hands and wrist.

Stay on the Cart Path

Whether you walk or ride in a cart, paying attention to your surroundings is rule number one! When walking, keep watch where you step. Many golfers have suffered twisted ankles from tripping over sprinkler heads or stepping into a hole. A sprain is a stretch injury of the ligaments that support the ankle. The ligaments on the outside of the ankle are most commonly injured when the foot is turned inward. Usually the ankle will be swollen and tender on the outside, below and just in front of the ankle bone.

A sprain may be mild, causing only modest pain or discomfort, or severe enough to prevent weightbearing. If not properly rehabilitated, a sprain can become a repetitive injury. Mild sprains should be treated with the RICE method. Other treatment options include protecting the area from further injury and anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. If you are unable to bear weight or if the ankle fails to improve within several days, it is time to see a physician. When riding in a cart, don’t exit until it has come to a full stop. Again, many golfers suffer from sprained ankles in their excitement to hit their next shot. Others have suffered broken ankles by catching their foot under the cart. Common symptoms for a broken ankle include immediate and severe pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness to touch and inability to put weight on the injured foot. Depending on the severity of the break, a broken ankle may be treated with a brace or could require surgery. Beware of other carts on the course. These accidents usually involve alcohol or horse-play, but no one wants to be run over by another cart, prematurely ending a beautiful day of golf. Cart-related injuries may result in soft tissue bruising, blunt force trauma, broken bones, concussions or worse.

he great game of golf requires a lot of skill, patience and perseverance. Whether you start at a young age or as a senior, you will find that the game looks much easier than it is when watching a Golf Professional play the game or hit a shot. Here are some fun facts, tips and a little information on a variety of things – from equipment to tournaments to instruction – to help you find your fit in the game!

1. 2. All players should get some sort of formal instruction

Golf is not a game of perfection; every player is built differently and swings the club in their own unique way.

on the basic fundamentals of the game when starting. Please don’t let your buddy help you with your golf game!

3. Juniors (ages 5–18) should start in a fun environment

like Golf Clinics or Camps. The instructor you choose should be very dynamic in his/her teaching with kids.

4.

Equipment Tip: Many people start out with the wrong equipment, which makes the game even harder yet! All Golf Professionals will work with you within your budget. Kids’ equipment should be sized according to their height.

5.

Rules Tip: Get with a Golf Professional and set up a small group to go over basic rules and etiquette of the game. This can be accomplished in a fireside chat with your local PGA Professional.

6.

Family Golf Tip: When starting your kids out by playing a course, please don’t exhaust them by playing 9 or 18 holes. Start them out by playing 3 to 5 holes and then have lunch. Small doses are good when they are little.

7. Great Golf Movies: 8. PGA Tour Event:

The Greatest Game Ever Played – The Legend of Bagger Vance – Caddyshack – Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius

If your kids are showing an interest in golf, take them to a PGA Tour event and let them experience this atmosphere in person. Golf on TV for kids is boring.

9.

Tiger Woods Golf Video Game: The Masters’ version is good for kids to learn some of the basic terminology and strategies of the game. Video games promote bad posture in the golf swing, so keep it to a minimum.

10.

Tournament Golf For Kids: Start out with small events locally and let them build their confidence. Parents should have putting contests with their kids and play for ice cream or a pop – something small to get their competitive juices flowing.

PAY ATTENTION Tips for Coping with ADHD or Even a Distracting Day at Work By Cyndy Searfoss

One of the memes making the rounds on Facebook these days resonates with those of us who are a certain age and easily distracted. It’s a take-off on that seminal 80s band, AC/DC. But the letters are AD/HD; underneath it says, “Highway to Hey Look a Squirrel!” While it’s often the subject of jokes and jests, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a medically recognized neurobiological condition. Some people exhibit only one aspect – AD or HD – while others have both. It is most commonly diagnosed in children who struggle in school and at home to pay attention, to complete tasks and to control their activity levels and impulses. Research seems to indicate that there are both genetic and environmental causes for ADHD, although one environmental factor long blamed for the behavioral issues caused by ADHD – parenting – is not one of them. But if you have a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD and you find yourself dealing with many of the same issues at work, chances are good that you have it as well. In fact, studies show that between one and two-thirds of those who are diagnosed with ADHD as a child exhibit symptoms as adults. For adults who grew up in the pre-testing/pre-medication era, this meant that they often had to navigate through managing their symptoms on their own. Because ADHD makes dealing with distractions, staying organized and being timely on assignments difficult, strategies that work for adults dealing with ADHD in the workplace can be used by anyone on those days when the little noises from the cubes around you feel like jackhammers 38 June 2013 | SASSY

interrupting your concentration, when the report due tomorrow just doesn’t feel like a priority or when you’ve managed to misplace the same set of files four times in the past four days. Important note: only a physician can diagnose ADHD. If your disorganization and distractibility are interfering with your ability to do your job well, a visit to your doctor for testing and advice is in order. To start, the general recommendations for staying healthy apply. Get plenty of restful sleep – being tired only makes coping with distractions more difficult. Eat small, balanced meals throughout the day to keep blood sugar levels stable and avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening. Exercise, particularly outdoors, is both stress-relieving and triggers the release of relaxing hormones in the brain (but don’t exercise right before bedtime). Try learning meditation, yoga or other relaxation techniques to help with focus and stress relief.

According to the experts, getting and staying organized is key to dealing with ADHD and/or distractibility. While computers were supposed to have been the beginning of the paperless office, we all know that hasn’t been the case. Paper begets clutter, which begets stress and disorganizations. Taming the paper monster is an important step in getting organized. Here are some tips on how to get started: • Sort paper work into three piles: must keep, good to have, not necessary. Be ruthless in keeping the ‘must keep’ the smallest of your piles. Once you’ve sorted everything, start a filing system for the ‘must keep’. Some people find it works well to color code their files, making it easy to identify and track folders – red for payables, green for invoices, yellow for expense reports, etc.

Thank you...

• Keep a task list weekly. On Friday afternoon or Monday morning, list all the things you know you have to accomplish in the coming week. It may be helpful to sort them into columns by area of responsibility or day • Don’t let mail – or email – accumulate. Designate a time of day to go through your inbox (virtual and real) and answer anything that needs an immediate response. If you can’t respond right away, put it on your to-do list so it doesn’t fall off your radar. • Use a standing rack to keep important files front and center. That way important projects and files don’t get lost in a stack or filing cabinet.

Then, there are the distractions:

• a set of earplugs can go a long way to keeping office chatter or noises from becoming too distracting. Just make sure your boss and/or coworkers are aware you’re using them and why. • If you have a private office, you may find that a white noise machine or soothing music can help as well. • Keep your desk and work space clutter-free to minimize visual distractions. • Managing deadlines and time management in general are important to work place success. • Always add an extra half hour to how long you think a task will take. Use any bonus time to catch up on tasks that you may have gotten behind on.

Use your computer or phone to bump you an hour before, half an hour before and 15 minutes before you have to leave or turn in an assignment. • Leaving the office? Conducting a

JOB SEARCH

By Tammie Carr

Does the thought of seeking a new job overwhelm you? You are not alone. Although some professionals have been fortunate enough to land one job after another without even trying, most of us have to work at it. After all, conducting a job search is not something that comes naturally to us and often takes us out of our comfort zone. Once you have made a decision to begin a job search, where do you start? Timing is everything! As a general rule of thumb, remember the best time to find a job is when you have a job. Right, wrong or indifferent, most employers prefer to hire someone that is working versus someone that is unemployed. So don’t wait to start your search if you notice any red flags at your current employer! Being employed while you are conducting a job search also puts you in a good position to negotiate, since you are not desperate and can afford to be picky. If you are less fortunate and already unemployed, the good news is that you have more time to devote to your job search! If you ask a career/outplacement coach, they will tell you conducting a job search can be a full-time job… so treat your search like a full-time job!

Although your #1 goal in conducting a job search is to get interviews, you typically need a polished resume in order to achieve this. Therefore, your first priority should be developing a well-written resume where you summarize and quantify your accomplishments. Employers love to hear how you can help save them money and help them increase sales, so reference your success in these areas whenever possible. It is also important to customize your resume to the job you are applying for, so don’t assume one size fits all. Try to capture the employer’s attention in the first tophalf of your resume; otherwise, you risk losing their attention and they will move on to the next resume. With social media on the rise, it’s also important to build your personal on-line brand and you can include your LinkedIn profile link in your resume. People love pictures so a nice professional photo can help improve your chances of getting a response. Next, you need to focus on getting as many interviews as possible! How can you get these interviews? By networking, networking and more networking! This includes phone calls, emails and meetings. Connect with as many professional contacts as possible, including recruiters, and let them know you are looking for a new challenge. If you are working, always remember to let others know your search is

highly confidential. Identify and research companies you would love to work for and develop a strategy on how you can get your foot in the door. Reflect on what you really want in your next position and make the most of this opportunity because you do not know when it will come again! Pay attention to job boards and advertisements and apply to those that fit your background and appeal to you. You can also post your resume on job boards, but be careful with this if you are currently working as your employer likely uses those resources to recruit themselves. Submitting your resume puts you more in control to ensure your search remains confidential.

Since the hardest part of a job search is getting the interview, the rest seems to fall into place once you impress them in person! Remember: employers want to hire happy and healthy professionals, and first impressions go far! Arrive a few minutes early and make sure you dress professionally and your clothes are neat and clean. Always be positive, have good eye contact and a firm handshake. Oh, and don’t forget to research the company and position before the interview and to send a thank-you note after the interview. GOOD LUCK!

CAROL SENOUR

Carol Senour is the Director of Human Resources at Bremen Castings Inc. Passionate about Human Resources and Manufacturing, she brings 22-years experience. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business, majoring in Personnel/Industrial Relations in 1992 from IUSB. She earned a Professional in Human Resources and then Senior Professional in Human Resources, from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Serving as the President of the Michiana SHRM in 2000, she currently chairs the Northern Indiana American Foundry Society Chapter and the National American Foundry Society Human Resources’ Committee. Starting a family during college, she became an executive and working mom; raising three professional daughters. Organizations must step up their employee appreciation efforts. There are a million ways to show employee appreciation without breaking the bank; often it cost little or no money. At Bremen Castings, we like to dream up new ways to show our employees that they matter. When utilizing Facebook and Twitter, it is fun to connect with employees and their family members; through recognizing employee birthdays, service anniversaries, sharing work pictures and congratulating/recognizing employees publicly for a major accomplishment. We tag the employee in the post and use a free application like Hoot suite or Sprout Social, which gives you the ability to schedule events weeks in advance. The information automatically posts without you having to remember to post it. What employee doesn’t like to receive a surprise card in the mail? Thank-you cards signed by multiple managers/supervisors and containing a $10 gas card are mailed to employees’ homes, after they have been recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty. The same is done with birthday cards, where a stack for the next week is taken to the production meeting and passed around for signatures. The birthday cards are expected to arrive the day before or that day. Several years ago, we started a 10-year club: a prestigious club for all employees with more than 10-years of service. There is a recognized entrance to the club, where a plaque is presented to the employee commemorating the actual dates of service. Annually, there is a dinner for these employees and one guest; while their names and years of service are read aloud, the employee proceeds forward to the podium to receive a commemorative gift. Every month on the 3rd Thursday of the month, we cater in a hot meal for all employees. At least once a year, the Executive Team grills out for this luncheon and interacts with employees as they come through the line. Management employees attend a monthly ‘Management Get the

This Month's Question:

We are seeing a growth in our business, but are hesitant to hire people due to economic uncertainty and inability to find the ‘Right People’. This is putting a heavy time demand on our existing employees. This will be more evident during the summer months when employees will want to spend time with their families. I am looking for unique ways to keep our employees happy at a nominal cost. I want to avoid burnout. ”

Word Out’ meeting where performance metrics are presented by a senior manager and then the Executive Team talks about business conditions, new work coming down the pike and what we need to work on as a team. Each quarter, we recognize an ‘Employee of the Quarter’: someone that stands well above the crowd in their performance/dedication/commitment. This employee has reserved parking, a $100 gift card to their favorite restaurant and will have lunch with the Executive Team, which gives them an opportunity to share their thoughts. Annually, at the company picnic, we recognize a ‘Performer of the Year’. This is often a dedicated, long-term employee that has sacrificed for the good of the company. The employee receives a gift basket full of BCI apparel, a variety of gift cards and reserved parking up front for the whole year. Electronic bulletin boards are placed by the time clock, which scroll a power point presentation of announcements including employee birthdays and service anniversaries. At the bottom of the screen the news is scrolling and the right side of the display is the weather forecast for our area. Health and Safety have their own dedicated display that gives employees information to Bremen Castings rallies around our employees by giving back to the community as one of our core values. On the company service anniversary this year, we scheduled a blood drive for the American Red Cross and over 100 employees signed up to donate. The company provided the space and gave them time off their job to give blood. Team BCI, as part of our healthy living campaign, will participate in local 5K runs/walks that support a local cause. Participation is open to all employees and their immediate families. As a family-owned company, it is important for us to treat our employees as family members and show them that we appreciate them daily.

DIANE BENNETT Diane Bennett is team leader for INSPIRED, a faith-based team of realtors with RE/MAX 100 working together to make real estate dreams come true! What are yours?

I love the desire to encourage employees! Good employees are worth far more than you can ever pay them, and the cost to replace and train new is far more than any of us has the energy for! So, I’d say that at Inspired, “I’m all about you!” not only means I’m about our amazing clients, but I’m also all about my amazing teammates! What makes them tick? What’s going on in their personal world? How can I help them to achieve their goals, dreams, secret desires? E a c h team member is different and what they need is different, too. Vicki was able, just recently, to take off for two days to be with her daughter, who was in from out-of-town for the first time in over a year! She’s the hub of our business, but Ally and the rest of us pitched in to get Vicki’s job done to make our wheel go around. She scheduled time off without pay, but we all pitched in to make it work. Ally is studying for her real estate license, and her husband aspires to bowl professionally. We talk about their dreams and how we can support her, encouraging both of them to pursue their passions. She, too, took time off to study for her first exam. Linda just returned from time away visiting her sister with cancer. While she did do some work remotely, we pitched in for things that had to be done in person, and anything else she would allow us to help with. Kim had time this past weekend, typically busy work days for realtors, with her family and attended her daughter’s dance recital. And I took off most of the day Thursday to see WICKED at the Morris with my three daughters. So, my answer to the question, “How can we keep employees happy at nominal cost to avoid burnout,” is time off! Even without pay! We all seem to have more energy to go over and above what may not be in our own job description, so that we, in turn, can take time off, knowing someone else has our back! The culture is so team focused, all for one and one for all, that we strive to know each other’s jobs and cover for each other first! Before we, ourselves, need time away to avoid burnout. Oh, and we are having lunch at my folks house today for team meeting. No fancy restaurant, just good food and good meeting time in a different setting at a nominal cost!
