With the start of the hoops season less than a month away, anticipation for the University of Miami basketball season is mounting for the Canes’ second year under head coach Jim Larranaga. This week Blue Ribbon Yearbook ranked UM No. 24 in its preseason Top 25 poll. This season Miami will host three Top 10 teams at the BankUnited Center: No. 7 Michigan State (Nov. 28), No. 6 Duke (Jan. 23) and No. 9 North Carolina (Feb. 9). The Canes will face the following ranked teams on the road: No. 9 North Carolina (Jan. 10), No. 4 NC State (Feb. 2), No. 6 Duke (March 2), and possibly No. 16 Arizona in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu (Dec. 23). In 2012-13, Larranaga and his staff will begin their second year at the helm in Coral Gables. Having posted a 20-13 record and an appearance in the NIT (second round) in his first campaign, Larranaga was the first Canes coach to open his UM career with 20 wins. Miami finished the season tied for fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a program-best, and registered Miami’s first winning record in the ACC (9-7). Miami returns nine scholarship players from the 2011-12 roster. Those nine players accounted for 80 percent of the Canes scoring, and 86 percent of rebounds, 82 percent of assists, 91 percent of blocks, 83 percent of steals, 81 percent of field goals made and 72 percent of three pointers made. The 2012-13 Miami basketball team boasts six seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen. Individual game tickets for non-conference matchups go on sale Nov. 1 and single game tickets for ACC matchups will be on sale in mid-December. To order your tickets, call 305-2842263.

Sebastian the Ibis, the University of Miami’s famous mascot, is one of 16 spirited heroes vying to become the 2012 Capital One Mascot of the Year, announced Monday by Capital One. Sebastian is one of three ACC mascots in the competition, joining Testudo (Maryland) and Ms. Wuf (NC State). Fans will be able to vote for their favorite mascots via Twitter. Regular season vote officially opens at 12 p.m. EDT on Mon., Sept. 3, and continues weekly through Mon., Nov. 26. The top eight mascots with the best head-to-head records will then compete in a bracketstyle, single-elimination competition to determine the overall winner. Fans can vote at www.CapitalOneBowl. com, on Facebook and on Twitter. All voting information appears at www.CapitalOneBowl.com. For the first time in its 11-year history, the competition will include two female mascots – Ms. Wuf and Wilma T. Wildcat from Arizona. The duo will be joined by four other competition newbies – Colorado State’s Cam the Ram, Missouri’s Truman the Tiger, Rutgers’ Scarlet Knight and Texas Tech’s Red Raider. The rest of the 16-member 2012 Capital One AllAmerica Mascot Team includes Cosmo (BYU), Sparty
(Michigan State), Mike the Tiger (LSU), Wolfie Jr. (Nevada), YoUDee (Delaware), Bucky Badger (Wisconsin), The Duck (Oregon) and Cocky (South Carolina). In addition to the 2012 team, Western Kentucky’s Big Red became the first inductee into the Capital One Mascot Challenge Hall of Fame. Big Red competed eight times in the Capital One Mascot Challenge. This year, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look inside the Capital One Mascot Training Camp. The quirky video vignettes will be released at www.CapitalOneBowl.com and www.Facebook.com/MascotChallenge. The Capital One National Mascot of the Year will be announced Jan. 1, 2013, at the Capital One Bowl and will be awarded a $20,000 scholarship to help fund its school’s mascot program. Each of the 2012 Capital One All-America team members will also receive $5,000 for their university mascot program. Coach For College - Vietnam
Eryn Croft will never forget that moment. After three flights spanning 24 hours and nearly 10,000 miles, she finally arrived at her hotel in Ho Chi Minh City at about 2 a.m. The front entrance to the hotel was locked. “Someone was sleeping on a couch in the lobby, so we had to knock on the bars outside the door,” Croft said with a laugh. “We had to wake him up to check us in. We couldn’t wear shoes in the hotel, and there was no elevator either.” Finally, after carrying a month’s worth of luggage barefoot up five flights of stairs, Croft set out on a journey that would change her life. As one of seven student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference chosen for the “Coach for College” initiative, Croft spent her summer teaching English and the basic rules of sports to Vietnamese children from the city of Hội An. As a pre-med major and aspiring pediatrician, “Coach for College” was a natural fit for Croft. “I really wanted to teach the kids. And a lot of the excitement was just the thought of experiencing another country,” she said. “It was an incredible month.” After a tedious application process that ended in January, Croft began to have weekly Skype sessions with her fellow instructors in preparation for a May departure. It was during these online meetings when she was first introduced to Kellie Barnum and Brittany Burns, two of the staff members she now regards as “lifelong friends.” “We still text each other all the time,” Croft said. “Kellie’s a setter at Boston College, so it’s pretty cool that I get to compete against her. Brittany just graduated from Clemson.” But even after hours spent discussing the summer ahead, nothing could prepare her for sleeping under bug nets in cramped guest houses with no hot water. “Everyone drives mopeds, and even though it’s really hot, everyone wears long pants,” she added. “People were staring at us and taking pictures with us - I don’t think they’ve ever seen someone as pale or as blonde as me.” Many of the 80 or so local youth from Hội An drove bikes over 45 minutes just to partake in the camp. Daily classes alternating between English and life skills were sandwiched around time spent outdoors, where the instructors helped teach the rules of volleyball, soccer, basketball and tennis. Nights were spent as a team planning lessons for the next day. “That’s really where we bonded the most,” Croft said. “And it was all in preparation for Friday, which was the day of competition each week.” Back in Coral Gables, the redshirt freshman now has game days of her own to worry about. Still, she can’t help but smile when she thinks about her month-long voyage overseas. “It really made me appreciate my life here,” Croft said. “Working with the kids was the best part of it all.” 19

The Miami Hurricanes have announced a special ticket deal – the “Publix Nine before 9” for the team’s 2012 home football schedule at Sun Life Stadium. The “Publix Nine before 9” deal begins on the Monday before each home football game, and will allow fans the opportunity to purchase tickets to that week’s game for only $9 each. To receive the special price, tickets must be purchased in person at the BankUnited Center between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The special kicks off this Monday, Sept. 10, with $9 tickets available for Saturday’s game vs. Bethune-Cookman. Seats at the special price will be available through Friday, and must be purchased between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the BankUnited Center. This week, and in all ensuing weeks other than Florida State, there is no limit to the number of tickets fans can purchase. Jose Armario | Chicago, Illinois How did you become a Hurricanes fan? “I can remember being a fan back when Chuck Foreman was our running back, but that strong affiliation has grown over the years from liking the Canes to bleeding Orange and Green everyday. It’s amazing how far the program has come, and while we have gone through some growing pains, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m certain Coach Golden is going to bring our football program back to it’s rightful place at the top of the polls.” Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Chicago? “Not at all! We have alumni and fans across the nation and the world. I have run into Canes just about everywhere, including places like Mexico, Chile, Spain and Russia. Like in many of the major cities across the USA, we have a very active Alumni Club in Chicago. There are great folks who work tirelessly to bring Canes together for game watches, business networking meetings, and our annual Coaches’ Dinner and Golf event. It also helps to have ‘CANES’ on your car’s license and get ‘The U’ thrown at you from time to time.” Is there a place you visit to watch Hurricanes games in the city? “Our Chicago Club has a partnership with “The Hidden Shamrock” in the city. We have great turnouts to view our home and away games, for both football and basketball. On a personal note, I love watching my Canes whether at home or during travel, and I will look long and hard to find a place that is showing our game, in Chicago, London, Singapore or wherever I may be.” Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Chicago? “Yes, we have plenty of Canes out here. I’ve got my good friends and neighbors Raul Alvarez, Bob Mahaney, Dennis Lingle and Stan Papuga around the corner. Our crew out here is led by David Panitch, Brian Kidder, Stu Ellison, Jess Marquez, and Paul Linden (and many others). I’ve also got to call out our biggest supporters from our former athletes like Jarrett Payton, Ted Hendricks, Marcus Nettles and until recently Greg Olsen (who just moved to Carolina).” How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Travel for games? “I’ve got my friends (we are known as the three amigos - Dean Myers, Raul Alvarez and myself) and a crew from Real Cane Talk who travel to several away games every year, and go to home games when in town. My other support comes in the form of being a Golden Cane for the past five years!” Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan? “I have many great memories, but two come to mind right away. First was attending the National Championship Game in 2002, at the Rose Bowl. I was there with my son Joey, and my brother in law and alumni Frank Lopez. It was such a dominating performance. There is nothing like being number ONE! We could not have been prouder! The other has been putting our annual dinner and golf event together with our Chicago Crew. We have put the event together to help bring alumni and fans in the same room with our head football coach and assistants to honor a former player that has done well for our school and their community. We have honored Ted Hendricks, Russell Maryland, Ed Reed, Greg Olsen and last year, the playmaker Michael Irvin. At the same time, we have raised over $350,000 over the past five years to help with academic scholarships for locally accepted students to The U, and for helping support our football program.” 24

Record-setting Stephen Morris leading Miami’s high-powered offense Through the first 11 games under center, QB Stephen Morris threw for 1,523 yards and seven TDs. In just six games this season, Morris has surpassed his career totals for completions, attempts, passing yards and TDs. Even after throwing for a season-low 201 yards in Miami’s 41-3 loss to Notre Dame, Morris still ranks fifth nationall in passing yards. The Miami native has 1,843 passing yards and 10 TDs in six games – 1,203 yards in the last three games. Morris’ record-setting season began three weeks ago in Atlanta. Morris set a then-careerhigh with 436 passing yards, becoming the first UM quarterback since Ken Dorsey in 2002 to throw for more than 400 yards. He also set career highs with 31 completions and 52 attempts. The junior engineered Miami’s final two scoring drives to complete a second-half comeback, erasing a 17-point deficit. For a week, Morris’ 436 passing yards stood as the fifth-best single-game yardage total in program history. After completing the thrilling 42-36 OT road win at Georgia Tech, Morris had yet another masterful performance ready for the home crowd. Morris threw for a Miami- and ACC-record 566 yards on 26 of 49 passes and a program-record-tying 5 TDs to lead the Hurricanes to a 44-37 win over NC State. Morris obliterated the previous UM record of 485 set by Gino Torretta in 1991.
Morris helped the Canes jump out to an early 23-7 lead, including three first-quarter touchdowns to Allen Hurns, Phillip Dorsett and Rashawn Scott. He wouldn’t thrown another TD pass until the fourth quarter – a second one to Scott and the eventual gamewinning 62-yard heave to Dorsett with 19 seconds remaining. Between the Georgia Tech and NC State wins, Morris amassed 1,002 passing yards and seven TDs. One of the biggest beneficiaries of Morris’ record-setting performances was Dorsett. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native hauled in a thencareer-high 184 yards on a career-high nine catches in Miami’s OT road win at Georgia Tech. A week later, Dorsett again set a career best with 191 receiving yards and two TD receptions against NC State, posting backto-back 100-yard receiving games. His 191 receiving yards are the third-most in program history. Alongside Dorsett was Scott, who also enjoyed a record day against the Wolfpack. Scott hauled a then-career-long 52-yard reception before taylling a 76-yard TD reception. He had 142 receiving yards by halftime and finished the game with a careerhigh 180 yards, his career-first 100-yard receiving game.

VB Sweeps Homestand Canes tied for first in ACC standings Miami volleyball continued its strong play at home the last two weekends, taking all four matches to move into a tie for first in the ACC standings. Sitting at 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the conference, the Canes were ranked No. 23 in the first RPI release of the season on Oct. 1. UM has won its last 14 at home dating back to last season and 25 of the last 26. Most recently, the Hurricanes took down North Carolina, 3-1, behind 18.0 total blocks - tied for the third-most in program history. Sophomore middle blocker Alexis Mourning led the way with 10 block assists, one short of the school record set in 2004. Junior right side Alex Johnson and sophomore middle blocker Emani Sims paced Miami with 10 kills. Against NC State, UM snapped the Wolfpack’s 10-match winning streak with Mourning and junior outside hitter Taylor Hollins combining for 25 kills. Junior libero Ryan Shaffer (above) had a season-high 30 digs in the back row.
“We just beat a great team that was on a huge winning streak and knows how to win,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “I thought we played some nice volleyball and put together a nice defensive effort.” The previous week saw Sims win Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week. She recorded 32 kills on a .500 hitting percentage in matches against Duke and Wake Forest. “Emani had an outstanding weekend for us coming up big attacking and blocking in both matches,” Lantagne Welch said. “She was a force at the net and made it difficult for our opponents to slow her down. It also shows the strong effort our passers, defenders and setters put forth enabling us to get the ball to her frequently. This is a well-deserved honor.” The Hurricanes will continue conference play this weekend on the road, traveling north to take on Maryland and Boston College.

Miami hosts Virginia and Virginia Tech this week in Coral Gables After ending a challenging three-game road trip with an impressive 2-1 mark, Miami enters the final stages of its 2012 schedule with home matches against Virginia (Oct. 11) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 14) at Cobb Stadium. Miami sandwiched dominant wins over NC State (2-0) and Clemson (2-0) around a disappointing loss to then-No. 13 UNC (1-6). Despite tough injuries to some of their most important contributors, the Hurricanes have stayed the course en route to their current 7-5-1 record. In its most recent win on the road at Clemson, Miami used goals from junior Tara Schwitter and freshman Allie Rossi to seal its sixth shutout of the season. Perhaps even more importantly, the Hurricanes got some timely onfield leadership from junior midfielder Jordan Roseboro that head coach Tom Anagnost said Miami needed. “Jordan displayed the on-the-field leadership that we have been desperate to have,” he said. “She was intense, and I thought was the best

I hope more players can emulate that mentality, because that is how we should always play.” Rossi became the sixth freshman and eighth newcomer to score through the first 13 matches of the season. Jasmine Paterson, the team’s highest-ranked recruit in program history, notched two assists in the 2-0 win at Historic Riggs Field. Paterson also tallied a goal in the team’s 2-0 shutout of NC State to begin the road trip. “When she is switched on and working hard, she is incredible,” Anagnost said of his star freshman. With a 2-3 record in conference play, the Hurricanes make their return home for two pivotal match-ups in Virginia and Virginia Tech. With both opponents ranked in the top 20 of the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire Division I Poll, the Canes will need to rely on veteran leadership and youthful spark. The Cavaliers were ranked No. 7 in the most recent poll, while Virginia Tech was ranked No. 15.

SEBASTIAN THE IBIS As the clouds become dark and a hurricane approaches, folklore maintains that other birds look to the Ibis for leadership. The Ibis uses its instinct to detect danger. It is the last sign of wildlife to take shelter before a hurricane hits, giving warning that danger is imminent. As the storm passes the Ibis is the first to reappear, a sign that clear skies are approaching. In 1926, the University of Miami adopted the Ibis as the official mascot for the University’s athletic teams. Representing the leadership courage, knowledge, strength and speed characteristics that our student-athletes portray. It wasn’t until 1958, when student John Stormont first donned a home made costume, that the mascot roamed the sidelines. Sebastian got his name from the San Sebastian Residence Hall where Stormont resided. Several versions of the Ibis have represented the athletic teams, with different sized heads and bodies, but the current look was developed in 1984, when John Routh began his stint. Routh is also credited with creating Sebastian’s now famous C-A-N-E-S cheer.
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments and championships. Hurricane Club Tops 5,500 Members
On the morning of its 40th anniversary, the Hurricane Club announced that it has surpassed its goal of 5,500 members for 2012. “2012 has been an outstanding year for the Hurricane Club and we are only going to grow more,” Assistant AD for Development Jesse Marks said. “We’ve added more than 1,000 members in the last two years alone and we hit our goal on our 40th anniversary. Thank you to all of our donors who helped make this a reality.” Join the Hurricane Club now! The Hurricane Club - which raises funds for student-athlete excellence, providing operational and facility funding for more than 400+ student-athletes across 17 varsity sports - relies on the generosity of Hurricanes fans, alums and former student-athletes to continue a high caliber of excellence in the classroom and in competition. The Hurricane Club, founded in 1972 as the Athletic Federation, is still pushing its most recent initiative, the “40for-40” campaign. The Rules of the Game TRIPPING Student-Athlete Employment It is permissible to employ Hurricane student-athletes. However, all compensation received by student-athletes must be for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate locally for similar services. While you may provide a legitimate employment opportunity for Hurricane student-athletes, please do not base their compensation on athletic reputation, fame, or potential advertising. Along these lines, do not provide benefits to student-athletes that are not available to other employees generally (i.e. transportation, insurance, company use of perks, etc.). It is permissible to hire student-athletes on a fee-forlesson basis. Lessons may not take place at UM facilities and payment must be received from the lesson recipient. Lessons must be coordinated through the Compliance Office. Please contact the Compliance Office at 305-284-2692 if you are interested in employing Hurricane student-athletes. Did You Know: Student-athletes MUST be paid for hours actually worked. If a student-athlete gets paid for work not actually performed their eligibility will be in jeopardy and must be restored by the NCAA and he/she will have to repay the money to a charitable organization.
