An insight into UK based Italian interior designer and master craftsman

Claudio Celiberti.

C

laudio Celiberti is a creator of luxury bespoke exteriors and interiors that really push the boundaries in today’s design world. A true visionary who has been the creator of some of the world’s most exclusive residences and commercial spaces for those who share his passion for striking architecture and design. In a lot of Claudio’s recent work you can see the Italian established himself as a leading young designer in his birth place of Italy. imaginative creative mind to bring his clients dreams to a visual effect he also has the technical background to take his clients ideas and dreams and bring them to life. Design Ethos (In Claudio’s own words) Many times throughout my career I’ve heard the words ‘but that’s impossible!’ from both my interior design peers and clients alike. But this has often just been a case of not having the technical ‘know how’ to make their ideas and designs a reality! Interior design should be about a great deal more than matching fabric patterns and aesthetically pleasing upholstery. It is my belief that in its proper form it should also encompass strategic planning and an intimate connection to many other disciplines including industrial design, engineering, building and architecture. Coming from an apprenticeship background, I don’t just know how to furnish a room beautifully. I also have the technical background and knowledge to be able to take a concept, indeed a seemingly impossible idea, from my clients, and bring it to life. This is something that can only come from experience in a variety of different trades – something lacking from many industry professionals today. My apprenticeship was of an old fashioned variety that doesn’t really exist anymore in the form it once did. Involving all aspects of the design process, it included bricklaying, stone masonry, building, carpentry, electrics and plumbing. The beauty of training within such a wild skill set is that you then have a base of knowledge on which to build all your plans.

However, these days, such a broad understanding across the board is rare and sadly craftsmanship suffers as a result. Making the impossible possible Take for example the time I was called in by a client to deal with an issue they were having with a new bathroom. Although initially happy with the sleek and stylish design of the room, after a few weeks they found staining began to occur on what was happening so I was brought in. After conducting a survey, I discovered the previous interior design company had not put anything on the back of tanking. The designers involved in that project, although very gifted in creating a lovely exterior, simply did not have the the whole stone had to be replaced and reinstalled by me. Such mistakes can mean a great deal of time and money lost unnecessarily. However, having technical knowledge doesn’t just help avoid problems, it’s also about knowing what wonderful things are possible. I It’s through this approach that I’ve been able to create everything from a sweeping 3-storey chandelier to a bespoke cellar capable of housing 1,600 bottles of wine and even a million pound kitchen made of solid crystal of Murano - Taking more than twelve months to create, the ‘Fiore di Cristallo’ kitchen, aims to push the boundaries of what is possible in design thanks to my no compromise approach to create the perfect masterpiece using striking design qualities, exquisite Handcrafted in Italy the opulent kitchen features only the best quality materials including the world famous ‘Crystal of Murano’ (cristallo di Murano). The end result is a kitchen that is not only functional detail.

PW Design has completed interior design, decorative lighting, furniture and finishes of all public areas and guest rooms of the newly opened InterContinental London Westminster. In just eleven months from appointment to opening, RPW Design has transformed Queen Anne’s Chambers, a former government building which is now home to 256 beautifully designed rooms including 44 luxury suites and an imposing penthouse. Welcoming and very English public areas at ground floor level have been designed to capture the traditions of the hotel’s illustrious neighbours in Westminster. Jan Wilson, owner and managing director of RPW, explains how local references were incorporated within the InterContinental Hotel Group’s brand guidelines, focussing on the very specific requirements of a property located in the heart of the government district and serving that market. The reception marble and mosaic floor has detail references to the floor at Westminster Abbey, and motifs from St James’s Park are also used to reference the design. The theme of the hotel’s signature artwork relates to various aspects of British political life in subtle and satirical ways. The dominant feature of the principal guest lounge is a sculpture inspired by Jan Wilson and created by the studio “Evil Robot Designs”, who use re-cycled model toys to create very individual art. The concept here is a re-creation of the House of Commons, leaving visitors and guests to decide for themselves

who is represented by the various characters that are present in this surreal version of the parliamentary chamber. The hotel’s public rooms are set to become the new destination for members of the ‘Westminster Village’. In the Blue Boar Bar and Restaurant, which has its street entrance in adjacent Tothill Street, RPW Design has created a series of public areas that feel intimate and private including secluded corners for private conversations, and a private drinking room. The Restaurant with its dark wood panelling and warm tones continues that tradition, and both areas operate as standalone elements in the development. In contrast, the Tea Lounge and Emmeline’s, named for the 19th Century British political activist and founder of the suffragette movement Emmeline Pankhurst, has a soft light palette which generate a lighter, more feminine mood. Colour accents in the Tea Lounge’s soft furnishings include fuchsia and lime, reinforcing the separate character of this area. The design of the guest bedrooms was inspired by the desire to achieve the look and feel of a luxury contemporary residential apartment. A bright and warm palette of offwhite with yellow highlights, lighten and invigorate spaces that are in the very heart of central London. Wood panelling has been used extensively, but this too is in a blond colour. A key feature of the guest room artwork is the contemporary Westminster streetscapes that were especially commissioned for the hotel.

RPW Design

Jan Wilson is proud of RPW Design’s achievements. She comments:

“It goes without saying that InterContinental hotels have an international luxury appeal. Whilst the InterContinental London Westminster maintains those brand standards, it has an intimacy that sets it apart. With the travelling world demanding ever more personalised environments, we believe this is where business travellers feel most at ease. The InterContinental Westminster provides all the services and standards of the InterContinental brand whilst still managing to achieve a very individual residential ambiance that is referenced in and unique to Westminster.

NEW LUMINESCENT SUPERYACHT FABRICS Global leaders in manufacturing luxury marine fabrics, Extex is excited to launch Solar - a pioneering and stunning glow in the dark fabric set to dress decks with a striking impact. Pushing the boundaries with innovation and design, it’s the first luxurious fabric of its kind, designed and manufactured in the UK for the superyacht. A specially hand-printed fabric with glow-in-the-dark effect that appears as a subtle and sophisticated tone-on-tone patterned fabric by day transforming into a striking luminescent galaxy at night. When the sun is shining brightly, Solar blends with its environment and complements existing furnishings elegantly. All featuring delicate, decorative swirls, the pattern comes to life at night with a stunning neon effect that transforms decks as the sun sets. Solar is heavily inspired by the ethereal quality of galaxies and constellations and features a swirling helix pattern, available in three light colour options; sandy hued Mars, icy grey tones in Neptune and cloudy creams in Venus. The deck of a yacht is the perfect stage for this fabulous new fabric, it’s sumptuous to touch, glamorous in use and comfortable to sit on. The printing ink is a pioneering photo luminescent pigment that features a new type of long after-glow. With a super strong capability, the pigment absorbs solar energy, stores and automatically glows in the dark for several hours after just 5-30 minutes exposure to lights on deck or natural sunlight. Specially hand-printed by Extex’s team of skilled craftsmen, Solar is the first Extex fabric to use a new and advanced permanent water, soil and stain repellency treatment, applied after printing. As with all Extex fabrics, Solar is able to cope with the harsh realities of yachting life, it’s water repellent, chlorine and saline durable, stain resistant, light fast, pre-shrunk and machine washable - the perfect choice of fabric for luxurious superyachts, season after season, anywhere around the globe. ALSO AVAILABLE - NEW COCOON TOWELLING For ultimate comfort and extra protection, the new Cocoon towelling fabric has also launched. Fully washable and super soft, Cocoon is ideal when made into removable slip covers for seating and sunbed areas. Acting like a beach towel, Cocoon can prolong the life of your luxury Extex fabrics by shielding them from sun cream and other substances.

Sweet DreamS: JOI-Design Cooks-up a 21st Century Style for the Niederegger Flagship

(London - 7 May, 2013) The original

First Floor: Cafe

Nostalgic references in modern forms continue throughout the design. Since as a medicinal remedy sold only by pharmacists, the interiors also subtly allude to this bygone era. Floor-toceiling timber shelves are teeming with various vessels and glass apothecary jars, including 1500 different titbits with handwritten slate price tags. Original plaster marzipan moulds from the Niederegger archives have been inset into a cherry-toned, back-painted glass accent wall, and a handmade brass ingot cast in the shape of a piece of marzipan becomes the meticulously detailed button for calling the lift. Inside, the timber panelling has been embossed with the Niederegger lettering traditionally impressed into the bottom of marzipan loaves.

The ground-level lounge is an ancestral gallery dedicated to the seven generations of Niedereggers who have devoted their from around the world. Paintings of the founder, Johann Georg Niederegger, and the sons to whom the business has been handed down successively over the years, had previously been scattered throughout the shop. Now brought together as a with indirect back lighting on a deep crimson coloured wall as a dramatic homage to the family’s legacy. An elegant white Murano glass chandelier with black linen shades elevates the ambience of the lounge, and contemporary chairs upholstered in a bespoke “candy stripe” fabric are a nod to the packaging of the classic Niederegger chocolates.

Tucked away behind a frosted glass divider and the glossy red accent wall is the kitchen where all these gastronomic delicacies come to life. Extending from here is a ten metre counter clad in teakwood and topped with Nero Assoluto granite slabs where elaborately swirled tortes and bits of confectionary artistry tempt the taste buds as guests enter the shop. Behind the refrigerated vitrines is a wall clad with classically styled porcelain kitchen tiles crafted especially for the restoration. Their patterns were originally designed by the artist Alfred Mahlau, who in the 1920s was commissioned to create the “corporate identity” and logo for Niederegger’s shop and café in Lübeck. Five different black and white silhouettes illustrate historical icons of the city: for example the Holstentor – the city gate;

and discovering recipes for cooking with marzipan.

JOI-Design has also woven technology into Niederegger’s 21st century persona. An automated electronic “game” challenges visitors to answer four questions (out of 100 possibilities) in order to win a marzipan loaf. And an interactive digital screen set within a traditional teakwood cabinet

In the café, the inscription impressed into the marzipan loaves has again been adopted, this time screen printed in white onto glass partitions to help create a sense of intimacy when diners are seated. Antique culinary utensils from Niederegger’s archives have been framed as artwork, and as on the ground

Wireframe Sofa Group Minimalist and Modern

Herman Miller, Inc., continues to embrace the blending of life and work with the introduction of the Wireframe Sofa Group, a newlycommissioned design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Londonbased Industrial Facility. This addition to the Herman Miller Collection is being presented during New York Design Week 2013. Minimalist and modern with a visible lightness, the Wireframe Sofa Group features an external structure that uniquely holds its cushioning in place. Made from steel wire, the durable frame ensures that Hecht and Colin’s design is lightweight. Moreover, because this frame is separate from the upholstery, the cushions are easy to remove, clean, and maintain. The first sofa to employ suspension technology developed by Herman Miller for the healthcare industry, Wireframe evenly distributes sitting pressure, making it a comfortable and versatile choice for home, working, and hospitality environments. “We wanted something that was visually light, that spoke of the contemporary conditions of moving a sofa from one position to another, and having to pass it through a small door frame,” said Sam Hecht. “These conditions may seem strange as inspirational starting points, but from them grew the idea of a wired frame that contains its cushions in a manner that feels comfortable to the eye as well as the body.” With the Wireframe Sofa Group, the Herman Miller Collection continues to follow through on its promise for newly commissioned design with timeless quality and dynamic performance, satisfying a specific and unique role in the portfolio and furthering an already strong relationship with Industrial Facility. The Wireframe Sofas are available in black and white frames, with cushion upholstery available in all Herman Miller Collection fabrics. Covers are removable. 2-seat, 3-seat, lounge chair, and ottoman are available.

About The Herman Miller Collection In 1948, George Nelson created the first Herman Miller Collection, with the goal of “a permanent collection designed to meet fully the requirements for modern living.” He understood that the Collection would evolve as human behavior changed and new materials and manufacturing technologies emerged. Today’s modern living embraces the blending of life and work, with greater appreciation for contemporary design and mobile and ubiquitous technologies offering new freedom of choice in where and how people express their lifestyles and pursue their professions. The Herman Miller Collection welcomes and enriches this new era, as we endeavor to realize Nelson’s vision for the modern home, office, and public spaces.

The Hidden House - Kensington Ian Hogarth of Hogarth Architects is fervent about light and space and this passion drove him to design and build an outstanding, ecofriendly, luxury home in an almost unimaginably small space in Kensington: a project certainly worthy of its inclusion in Channel 4’s Grand Designs programme. A marriage between the traditional mews setting and a desire for a modern space was found by concealing the majority of the building behind a ‘rabbit-hole’ style entrance, effectively creating a ‘Hidden House’.More than half of the floor space is concealed underground in an extensive basement.

Inside, it is both minimalist and decadent; Stairs immediately to the right of the entrance lead down to the basement, which has come to be the most popular family domain. It holds a large entertaining space comprising of a flashing-fluoro dance floor complete with a large sunken seating area in front of an impressive home cinema. Seven Amina AIW5X invisible loudspeakers were selected to create the 7.1 surround system with the centre channel speakers positioned into the wall which is used to project films onto, ensuring the sound comes right from where it should with no visual impact. This approach ensured not only flawless sound delivery but allowed the intricate, seamless design in the basement to

remain intact and uninterrupted. Working in a way analogous to acoustical musical instruments these speakers reproduce sound through a multitude of tiny vibrations rather than through the pistonic action of conventional loudspeakers. This technology enables the speakers to be installed in a wall or ceiling and then covered by a 2mm final skim of plaster or similar and thus, once installed, there is no visible sign of their position. The stunning result has delighted Ian who commented “The sound is very impressive; the home cinema experience is fantastic with a surprising amount of output and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Amina Invisible Loudspeakers to my clients.”

TIMELESS HOMES Creates Magnificent Luxury Villas with Leading Industry Experts The Munich-based Company TIMELESS HOMES creates, under a new brand, spectacular, exclusive luxury homes and cooperates with leading industry experts in Design, Real Estate and Construction. TIMELESS HOMES is now creating dream homes with a unique architectural brand to meet the sophisticated requirements of a growing number of clients worldwide. The project focuses on the timeless, elegant expressions of form. Thanks to the modular and scalable architectural concept used, the solidly constructed design-oases satisfy the individual requirements of their selected target group, offering every imaginable layout and roof variation in a wide range of sizes. In addition to the three existing variations, further home design concepts will be developed in the years ahead.

LIMITLESS Living Space This luxury villa is characterized by two U-shaped levels – one on top of the other – and a spacious atrium. Seamless transitions between the interior and exterior give the impression of luxurious ambiance. The large glass fronts serve to enhance the experience of limitless living space. WEIGHTLESS Architecture The WEIGHTLESS home has been stripped down to the bare essentials. What remains is a puristic and almost weightless architecture, comprising a rectangular body on a static central core – a “floating block” above a glass base. FEARLESS Design The FEARLESS home concept impresses with its bold, and unusual architecture. From the solid body of this house individual spaces were “cut out” that flexibly adapt to the surroundings and move elegantly between the levels of the building. The result is a unique concept that fits into virtually any topography.

TIMELESS HOMES

The market for luxury real estate is booming.

The TIMELESS HOMES brand was established specifically for this project. Timeless Homes GmbH, together with renowned designers and partners from the real estate sector, is in charge of marketing and selling the luxury villas worldwide. Clients can act as developers and implement their own ideas for their real estate or acquire entire turnkey concepts in top international locations. The first luxury villa is to be built in the affluent Munich suburb of Gruenwald.

The market for luxury real estate in Germany is growing. Bentley Announces Le Mans Limited Edition Mulsanne And Continental Models The 90th anniversary of the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race and Bentley’s participation in the inaugural event The 10th anniversary of Bentley’s victory in 2003

(Herndon, VA, 9th May 2013). Bentley Motors, Inc. today announces six new Le Mans Limited Edition specifications available on the flagship Mulsanne and the Continental family, exclusively available in North America. Each model is inspired by a driver from Bentley’s six victories at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours race. From the company’s start in 1919, Bentley was remarkably successful in both racing and setting new speed records. Founder W.O. Bentley was a determined supporter of motor racing as a means of establishing the Bentley marque and the company’s racing success was achieved through its engineering competence and the skills of a group of drivers known as the ‘Bentley Boys’. After being the sole British entry and placing fourth in the inaugural 1923 race, Bentley won the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race in 1924. From 1927 to 1930 Bentley dominated the event and took victory on four consecutive occasions. In 2003, nearly 83 years to the date from its previous victory, Bentley achieved yet another victory, placing first and second, with Guy Smith piloting the first of the two Speed 8’s across the finish line. To celebrate these significant milestones, 48 examples of each ‘Le Mans Limited Edition’ model are being produced. Each car will have a unique Le Mans Edition numbered badge, Le Mans Edition clock face, embroidered Le Mans badge to each headrest, tread plates with the limited edition name, unique Le Mans Edition wheels and specific interior veneers and exterior colours. “We’re very proud of our motorsports heritage and we’re excited to celebrate our historic wins at Le Mans 24 Hours,” said Christophe Georges, President and COO, Bentley Motors, Inc. “The Le Mans Limited Edition models showcase our performance and handcrafted luxury through these unique, heritage inspired specifications.” Continental GT models will be available in the second quarter of 2013 with Mulsanne Le Mans Edition models available beginning in the third quarter. For additional information please visit the Bentley Le Mans Edition microsite: www.lemansedition.bentleymotors.com.

CREATED TO CELEBRATE 20th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRE STATION THE FIRST COMPLETED BUILDING BY ZAHA HADID

Swarovski has commissioned Zaha Hadid to create a celebratory installation marking the completion twenty years ago of her first major built project, the Fire Station at Vitra Campus, Weil am Rhein, Germany. The installation, entitled Prima, is an angular piece made from five highly polished components that can be moved into different configurations. It will be installed in front of the Fire Station, reflecting and honouring the design process of the building. The project recalls the dynamism of Hadid’s original drawings created for the Vitra Fire Station, exploding in three dimensions from the lines and planes of the paintings and sketches. Its reflective surfaces contain seating for visitors and are illuminated with LED technology. One of the world’s most celebrated architects, Zaha Hadid was the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize, the most prestigious award in architecture. For years, her radical designs remained on the drawing board, but the turning point came in 1993 with the opening of the Vitra Fire Station commissioned by Vitra’s Chairman Rolf Fehlbaum. Painting formed a critical part of Hadid’s early career as the design tool that allowed powerful experimentation in both form and movement - leading to the development of a new language for architecture. Hadid’s interest in the concepts of fragmentation and abstraction is evident throughout her repertoire and continues to this day. Originally engaging with the work of Kazimir Malevich, Hadid translated the warped and anti-gravitational space of Russian avantgarde painting and sculpture into her own unique architectural practice. Using the advanced design and manufacturing technologies available today, the facets of Prima are a direct translation of the dynamic

two-dimensional lines and planes on the canvas, reflecting Hadid’s detailed experimentation to perfect the Fire Station design. The installation continues this research, documenting Hadid’s remarkable journey as an articulator of complexity: a 2D sketch evolves into a workable space, and then into a realised building. Zaha Hadid commented: “I’m equally proud of all my projects as they each represent different times of my career and periods of research, but I have a particular affection for Vitra Fire Station as it was my first building. Rolf Fehlbaum shares my passion for architecture and was inspired by my early visualizations. He dared to engage me without seeing a prior track record and without the certainty of public success. Returning to Vitra to work with Swarovski on this installation has been a very rewarding experience.” Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Swarovski Executive Board, commented: “Zaha is an astonishing force of nature who imparts her designs with power and grace in equal measure. It has been an honour to work with her once again on this exciting celebratory commission. Prima is a dramatic sculptural installation - half art, half furniture, and stunningly beautiful.” Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman of Vitra, said: “I am happy to have worked with Zaha Hadid at such an early stage of her dazzling career. Her Fire Station is a spectacular building and it looks as impressive now as it did when it was first built. Few other architects would have been able to transform a modest commission like ours into a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Zaha has been able to do so, thanks to an incredible sense of space and a radically new vision of what architecture can represent.” Prima by Zaha Hadid for Swarovski at Vitra Fire Station on the Vitra Campus, Weil am Rhein, Germany. Zaha Hadid will be in conversation with Deyan Sudjic, Director of Design Museum, London, hosted by the Vitra Design Museum at 17.00 opposite the Fire Station. Prima will be showcased outside the Fire station from 12 June to 11 August 2013. The installation can be viewed as part of the public architectural tours.

Beauty Make-Over Treatment from Remmers The Beauty Shop in Huddersfield required an upgrade to the flooring of the ground-floor treatment and tanning rooms. Although the existing floor was still in relatively good condition, the Salon required a change to the original colour scheme and selected a two coloured Remmers Colorid Flake system to be installed throughout. The revamp also required a corresponding darker floor to be installed in the tanning room due to the nature of the treatments. All of the floor areas were initially prepared; base coated with Epoxy BS3000 and then flaked with Colorid. All areas were then sealed with Epoxy UV 100 and two coats of Remmers PUR Aqua Top M to create the specified colours and design. The works were completed with minimal disruption, meaning the Beauty Shop was quickly able to re-open for business.

Historic palace next to St. Isaac’s Cathedral prepares for rebirth as Russia’s most exciting new hotel and meeting place

New-built, high up in Peter’s Square, A corner mansion then ascended; And where its lofty perron ended, Two sentry lions stood at guard like living things, And kept their ward with paw uplifted.

Immortalised in Alexander Pushkin’s 1833 poem The Bronze Horseman, the legendary Lion Palace is coming to life once again as a stunning new gathering place for travellers and the city’s social and cultural trendsetters. Set to open in summer 2013, Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace St. Petersburg harkens back to Russia’s romantic past while setting a course for the future of hospitality in the city. “We are very proud to be part of the city, and it is a great privilege to open our Hotel in such a legendary building returning to the city in its full glory,” says Martin Rhomberg, General Manager of the new hotel in this historic building. “We are looking forward to presenting to guests our sumptuous room appointments, exciting new restaurant concepts, the city’s most exclusive spa and its most impressive event space. After years of exhaustive preparation, we are ready to begin booking reservations in anticipation of our opening later this year.” A Labour of Love and Respect A meticulous restoration that respects architect Auguste de Montferrand’s original vision and the storied history of the “House with Lions” is culminating in a traditional setting for a very modern way to travel, meet, dine and entertain. The unique triangular-shaped building – guarded for nearly two centuries by the pair of stone lions in Pushkin’s poem – began life like many other St. Petersburg palaces, as an apartment house for the city’s elite. Owned by Princess Cleopatra Lobanova-Rostovskaya, wife of Tsar Alexander’s close associate Prince Alexey Lobanov-Rostovsky, the Lion Palace was occupied for just seven years before it became a state ministry. For much of the 20th century, renovations by various occupants – including a hostel, school and state offices – caused significant damage to the once beautiful palace, until the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation decided to revive this important architectural monument as a luxury hotel, the first Four Seasons in Russia. Now, just months from inviting guests to once again pass through its formidable entrance, the Lion Palace is returning to its former glory. The 177-room hotel will also house four restaurants and bars, an exclusive spa, and stunning meeting spaces with high tech amenities for business and glorious décor for weddings and other social functions.

At the Heart of St. Petersburg Positioned next to the iconic St. Isaac’s Cathedral, also designed by de Montferrand, Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace St. Petersburg is where Admiralteysky Prospekt and Voznesensky Prospekt cross, just a short stroll from the Palace Square. Inside, the feeling is immediately palatial, with a grand staircase reminiscent of the muchphotographed staircase of the Hermitage and Winter Palace. “We want to become the meeting place of choice in St. Petersburg, and with our beautiful main ballroom we will see many grand events, and we certainly look forward to congratulating many wedding couples who will begin their new lives together here,” says Rhomberg. Guests who stay in one the Hotel’s 151 rooms and 26 suites may awaken from their signature Four Seasons beds and momentarily imagine that they are tenants in Princess Lobanova-Rostovskaya’s 19th century apartment house. Timeless elegance in the setting of a palace fit for royalty, where each room - many with unique floorplans thanks to the building’s triangular design – features high ceilings, period details and fantastic views of St. Petersburg. Also in every room: 21st century technologies and thoughtful comforts that travellers around the world have come to expect at Four Seasons. An Exclusive Retreat: The Spa at Four Seasons Also coming later in 2013 will be an intimate and exclusive full-service Spa. Luxuriously spread over four floors within the building’s original courtyard, the Spa will offer six treatment rooms, Russian-style saunas, a fitness centre and a relaxation pool under a sunlit dome. Open to Hotel and day guests, the Spa will offer traditional and cutting edge facials, massages, body treatments, and manicures and pedicures, all with the intuitive service of skilled Four Seasons therapists. The City’s Most Impressive Address While the photo opportunities associated with the grand staircase alone might be enough to tempt brides and event planners to book Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace St. Petersburg for their most important occasions, it might very well be the event spaces themselves that capture the imagination. The exquisite Montferrand Grand Ballroom accommodates up to 350 for dinner and dancing, and seven additional rooms offer a variety of well-equipped meeting spaces in a total of 785 square metres (8,450 square feet) of event space. Historic and Modern St. Petersburg Known as Leningrad for much of the 20th century, St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great – the “bronze horseman” of Pushkin’s poem. Often referred to as the Venice of the North due to its rivers and bridges, the city takes much of its flavour from a long association with the royal families of Europe, and its citizens’ enduring love of art and culture. In addition to its strategic location near to the city’s business community, Four Seasons is also close to important historic sites, extensive museum collections, performing arts including the worldrenowned orchestra, ballet and opera of the Mariinsky Theatre, and annual events including the famous Beliye Nochi, or White Nights, each June/July. The city also boasts a dynamic food scene, and the concierge team at Four Seasons is ready to suggest the best restaurants, score VIP access to the hottest clubs and last minute tickets to the theatre, plus arrange excursions to the beautifully preserved palaces that surround the city.

New Stars of the French Riviera JOI-Design Sprinkles Stardust on the JW Marriott Cannes and AC Ambassadeur Juan-les-Pins (London, 19 June 2013) The public areas of two Marriott hotels on the French Riviera have recently been modernised by JOI-Design, reintroducing the JW Marriott Cannes as the place to be seen in this most glamorous of destinations and the AC Hotel Ambassadeur as a chic coastal retreat in the exclusive Antibes enclave, Juan-les-Pins. Cannes is celebrated for its longstanding appeal amongst the international jet-set who are attracted by the chic lifestyle, Mediterranean climate and azure sea - and of course the cinematic industry’s biggest annual event, the Cannes International Film Festival, when the world’s shining stars descend upon the city to promote their latest on-screen creations. Since the 1940s a blend of the rich cultural heritage and stunning coastal scenery has provided an alluring miseen-scène for this prestigious event. Located on the former site of the Palais des Festivals, the JW Marriott Cannes is on the famed Boulevard de la Croisette, a palm tree-lined promenade of luxury boutiques, restaurants and cafés overlooking golden beaches. As a reference to the site’s former occupant, the designers’ concept for the JW Marriott Cannes recalls a sophisticated era of film star glamour, one that imbued the spirit of luxury without being excessive. The relative simplicity of the 1980s architecture provided a suitably neutral background and the building’s clean lines have been carried through into the interior design concept. Here the values of deluxe elegance are expressed via the application of high quality materials and finely crafted details. The designers deliberately kept to a subdued colour palette of greys, mahogany, black and ivory accented with warm gold and champagne tones. Material finishes are pure and luxurious – Carrara marble, Macassar Ebony timber, leather, velvet and silk. The new narrative begins at the entrance where structural columns have been transformed to emulate eye-catching golden palms and the design of the port cochère now suggests a canopy of palm fronds. A “carpeted” staircase of sepia and grey marble inlaid 74

with a golden stone stripe escorts guests into the hotel’s reception area. Inside, the lobby opens into an impressive five storeys in height, with dramatic vertical features that, as in a sacred temple, compel occupants to lift their gaze upwards. A spectacular light sculpture of delicate golden “leaves” cascades 20 metres down into the centre of the space; and striking vertical columns encased in creamy marble are bathed in filtered sunlight from above. Horizontal rows of balconies, also marbleclad, are accentuated and reflected in the mirrored ceiling above. The overwhelming effect is a sanctuary to style and glamour, a dazzling setting for glittering occasions. As a counterpoint to the imposing horizontal and vertical lines above, the design at ground level takes on a more organic feel. The expansive polished marble floor is interspersed with seating areas defined by inlaid carpets with subtle, golden-toned palm frond patterns on a dark chocolate background. Fine bronze “meridian lines” running through the marble and carpet flooring connect the separate materials. Seating is plush and high in comfort with several options for meeting and greeting including tall, graceful wingback chairs and low cosy club chairs and sofas. In addition, a customised communal sofa skilfully divides and defines seating areas between the lobby and bar. A composition of soft greys, champagnes, velvet and burnished metal speaks of understated luxury. The bar is a statement piece of sculptural curves finished in Macassar Ebony timber and burnished gold, with glass pendant lights above adding a flattering ambience. This is the ideal spot to linger over a perfectly crafted martini while star-spotting. A light mood is much in evidence at the high-gloss Champagne tables with their plush white leather seating contrasted against the dark grey marble flooring – perfect for a celebratory drink or to simply indulge in one of life’s pleasures. An adjacent wall displays a cleverly designed wine rack feature constructed of a delicate rose-gold mesh in which bottles are suspended.
