The Cabo Marine Show returns to the Marina Golden Zone of Cabo San Lucas, on the spectacular Marina waterfront promenade by Puerto Paraiso Shopping Mall, Luxury Avenue Boutique Mall and Marina Fiesta Resort & Spa — with new vendors, more entertainment and the all new La Paz Pavilion.
The 18th Annual Art Festival in Los Barriles is April 3, 2011 at the beautiful Hotel Palms de Cortez. This year’s festival will highlight and promote amazing talent through the eclectic and aweinspiring exhibitions of local artisans. The concessions are sure to draw a crowd also.
Countless colorful sails set against the beautiful blues Sea of Cortez with the warm waters and people having a great time is the San Felipe Hobie Hop.
“New vendors from the La Paz area and mainland Mexico highlight a busy Semana Santa,” said Sergio Igartua, organizer of the second annual Cabo Marine Show. “Last year we received more than 3,000 visitors and showcased more than 40 local and foreign vendors during our 3-day event. This year we will be expanding the number of booths to include new participants such as FONATUR and a more prominent presence from IGY Marina Cabo San Lucas.”
Festival admission and parking are free. Vendor set up begins at 7 a.m., with booths being assigned on a first come basis.
Brands include Village Marine Tec, Parker Racor and Performance Boats. Plus, Otaduy Yachts will showcase its charter fleet with some of the largest luxury yachts located in Baja Sur. Also watch for some of last year’s favorites, including Cabo Riviera, Specialized Marine Services, Maui Jim and Los Cabos Winery. Live entertainment features The Cosmopolitans (Los Cabos), Ranchoe (Monterrey) and Bluz Explozion (La Paz). There will be plenty of entertainment throughout the day on an open grassy area, and room is available for visitors to catch local entertainment and children’s programs throughout the day. Mouth watering food will be available throughout the festival; from traditional Mexican fair, delicious baked goods, premium hot dogs, filling beef burgers to various snacks. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages will also be on the festival grounds. Organizers do ask that no pets are brought to the festival. There are special event rates for accommodations, call 624-141-0050 for details. The festival is organized and presented to the community thanks to the hard work of the East Cape Arts Association. All proceeds benefit the association’s efforts to bring the arts into local communities and schools.
The regatta is an experience not to be missed. From San Felipe Bay to Gonzaga Bay over 3 days. The time will be spent relishing in laid back fun; picture perfect atmosphere under a blue sky and warm breezes. Reel in a fish or two and explore the shore and make new friends. The ragatta is open to any vessel that can make the trip, and even to those without a vessel. we can help you find a boat to join with or you can join the "road regatta" and drive; it's all about a good time. Emergency support will be on hand in the water and on the shore if needed. The evenings will give adventurers the chance to mingle with each other during nightly bonfires and BBQ’s. There will also be music and plenty of fun to add to the beach party atmosphere of the Hobie Hop. The San Felipe Hobie Hop is sponsored by the San Felipe Sailing Club and the Baja Good Life Club. Many people from across the border are taking advantage of Baja as viable option for dental care and medical care. While medical tourism for treatment and prescriptions is nothing new in Baja, the increase of people crossing the border for quality and affordable dental work is growing by leaps and bounds. This growth is primarily notable due to the dramatic increase in the number of clinics close to the border. Towns such as Los Algodones, Rosarito Beach, Mexicali, Tijuana and San Felipe are all seeing a huge increase in dental clinics. Most of the clinics close to the border of Baja are an easy drive from Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma and many other towns in the U.S. During “snow bird” season, business explodes at many of these clinics. Many part-time Baja residents wait until they spend part of their year in Baja to be seen by a dentist, specifically because of the lower costs involved. Dr. Melina California Fierrors Zatarain, who practices in San Felipe, knows firsthand how much the dental business has increased in Baja. She says, “I moved to San Felipe to start my own practice in 2006.

“What started as a small office with just me and my assistant, within two years grew into a clinic with two dentists, an assistant and a receptionist, with a schedule booked for a month. So, I couldn't be more grateful towards my patients and their referrals and to Baja Good Life Club for their continued support.” Dentist, both American and Mexican, typically travel to the United State for specialty training. Because they choose to practice in Mexico, they can offer top notch, quality dental care at a fraction of the cost it takes to get the same work done in the United States at a clinic with all of the same capabilities. Estimates put the savings at anywhere from 40% to 70% for care. Dr. Melina California gives some insight into the exact costs of some common procedures. She charges $30 for a cleaning and checkup, $60 for a white filling replacement, $200 for metal and porcelain crown, $450 for full denture bottom or top plate, and $950 for a dental implant. For her practice, regular cleanings, crowns, bridges and fillings are the most popular; however she offers much more. Because the majority of dentists do get some training in the U.S., they speak English, which naturally puts foreigners who are in a dental chair at ease. There is no reason to worry about your dental needs getting lost in translation. There is also a wide range of specialties just as in the U.S. It is
fairly easy to find a clinic that specializes in senior care, cosmetic dentistry, family dentistry, implants, root canals, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, fillings, dental bridges, dentures, TMJ treatment, sedation dentistry, periodontics, and orthodontics. Many of the dentists practicing close to the border also guarantee their work for a certain number of years. Many also offer free consultations. Some practices will have several dentists who provide a variety of specialties under one roof. When you bring up discount dental care in Baja, some may conjure up images of some seedy back alley clinic equipped with less than state of the art staff and equipment. For the most part, this image is unfounded and certainly not true of today’s border town clinics that are frequented by foreigners. The best way to put your mind at ease about the care you’ll receive or the cleanliness and professionalism of a certain clinic is to check it out for yourself. Any reputable clinic will be more than willing to guide you through the clinic and answer any questions you may have. You should be able to see for yourself how clean, sterile and professional a clinic truly is. You may want to take note of the licenses and certifications of the staff. Just as in most clinics in the United States, you should be able to clearly see that those who work there are qualified to do so. If you do not see any certification, do not hesitate to ask to see some. You many also want to take note of the equipment. Dr. Melina California testifies to the quality of equipment. productive, you will want an honest idea of what you truly need done. By seeing a dentist first for a consultation, you are already armed with the knowledge of what work needs to be done so you are not in for any surprises. Having the proper documentation in order long before you plan your trip will help everything go smoothly. You will also want to estimate the total monetary cost and amount of time needed to obtain care in Baja. Working with the clinic before you receive care can help you get a real idea of how many trips you may need to make and the overall travel costs. While getting work done in Baja may initially save you money, repeated follow-up treatments and the cost of accommodations may far outweigh any savings on the dental work. One way to compensate for the additional cost and travel is to factor in a vacation or stay with snow bird friends while getting the work done. This is exactly what some of Dr. Melina California’s patients have done. She says, “A lot of my patients plan a little "vacation" or getaway and enjoy Baja while they have their dental work done. I have had patients fly from Washington State, rent a car, have a little vacation and still spend around a third of what they would in the U.S.”

Before you rush to head across the border, you may also want to talk to other patients and get recommendations. Dr. Melina California echoes a sentiment that is shared by many who get their dental care done in Baja. She says, “I have heard from my patients that their experience here is more personal and caring than in the U.S.” You will also want to ask about insurance coverage. You may be surprised what you can have done in Baja and still submit to your insurance company for monetary compensation or all out coverage of certain procedures. In some situations, you will pay in cash or credit then submit a claim for reimbursement. The process varies depending on the insurance
company and the clinic. As for Dr. California’s practice, she says, “I personally do not accept insurance as payment, but I do fill out the claim forms for patients who have paid cash for reimbursement. I have heard from various patients that their deductibles in the states for certain treatments could be twice as much as what we charge complete.” When choosing a clinic in Baja, keep in mind that the cheapest is not always the best route, whether you are using insurance or not. The old adage, ‘you get what you pay for’ is true for dental care. Do your homework and really take your time to pick the right place for you. There is a delicate balance between a competitive price and an ethical practice. You wouldn’t bargain hunt for medical care anywhere in the world and you should not bargain hunt for dental care either. Botched dental care done incorrectly or in an unclean clinic can leave you with more than bad teeth. When it comes to being sure you are getting the best dental care at the best price, another good idea before you head to Baja is to see a dentist in the United States. While this may seem counter-

Sharon Lainas, who lost her husband while living in Baja, tells of just that happening. She says, “The only problem aside from grief was that they made a mistake on the death certificate; which I didn’t catch fast enough, making it my responsibility to get it fixed.” She says when her husband passed, the authorities needed to see an FM3 (Mexican visa) and birth certificate for her husband.
W
hether you are just visiting on vacation, a seasonal “snow bird” or an expatriate who has made Baja your permanent home, there are things to know and be prepared for in the event a loved one passes away while in Baja. No one likes to think about it, but you may have to go through it, if a loved one dies in Baja while you are living together or traveling on your dream vacation. Sadly, it does happen and even if you and your loved ones are in perfect health, you should know what to do if you are in Baja at the time of loss. While many expats and snow birds are retired and may have already vocalized and legalized their wishes in the event of death, others may find a tragedy like death comes unexpectedly. The grieving process can be overwhelming and paralyzing. Adding legal difficulties, and road blocks to get your loved one’s remains back to the United States, to this challenging time only makes the grieving process all the more unbearable. Knowing what to do and what to have on hand ahead of time is in the best interest of everyone left behind. When a loved passes away in Baja, it is vital that you contact the authorities for the municipality you are in. The hospital or clinic you may be at will do this for you; however if you are at home you need to call them. The local funeral home will immediately prep and store the remains until proper transport can be arranged. The local municipal coroner will issue a Mexican death certificate. You must have this document. While they will give you

You should also contact the U.S. State Department if you are a U.S. citizen or the deceased is. They can assign a representative that can clarify the law and give you the guidelines to getting your loved one across the border in a timely and smooth manner. They can also serve as a protector to help keep you from being taken advantage in your time of need. Some funeral homes may see a foreigner as easy prey especially during a time of grief and confusion. The State Department can help you find a reputable place that will not overcharge you for anything from embalming to the price of a casket. The State Department will need Next of Kin Certification. This will get the survivor on the right track to obtaining power of attorney to transport the body. It is important to remember that even though you may be in the midst of grief, or even in shock if the death is sudden, the sooner you get the ball rolling, the sooner the process will complete. It is also important to realize that the survivor is responsible for the cost. Transporting a casket with full documentation to accompany the body can cost $5000. The US Consulate General will help with all of the formalities and legalities. They will prepare a Consular report of Death of American Citizen Abroad if you are on vacation during the passing. You will still need a Mexican death certificate. You will also need evidence of U.S. citizenship of the deceased or a certificate of naturalization. The deceased person’s social security number will also make the entire process run a lot more smoothly. Next of kin looking to arrange transport should
present a photo ID, their address and phone number. If the next of kin has a different last name than the deceased, a marriage certificate or other documentation indicating the reason for the different name needs to be on hand. If you are not the next of kin, they will contact them for you. Once all is in order on the Mexican side, authorities on the United States side of the border need to be waiting with an ambulance or funeral home representative ready to meet the Mexican ambulance. They will need to see the Mexican death certificate to take the body. Several people who have been unfortunate enough to be the position of losing someone they love while in Baja all recommend an easier way to deal with the loss. Kristy Deegan says, “The main recommendation is to get the loved one cremated.” Because cremation is simply the easiest and quickest option, Kristy was able to get everything done within a week. She adds, “Mike died on Monday. I saw the coroner on Tuesday. Mike’s body (was) sent Mexicali on Wednesday and he was back on Friday.” Cremation can cost approximately $2000. Steven Forman also lost a loved in Baja and needed to reach out to the local community and authorities for help. His partner of 37 years died after an extended illness, so they were somewhat prepared for his passing while in Baja. After chemo and radiation, Steve and Mark both came to terms with his eventual passing in Baja. While paperwork was in order, Steve found the cost of cremation to be difficult. He turned to a bilingual lawyer to help him find a mortuary in Mexicali where he could afford to have his loved one cremated. Once cremated, there is a lot less legal wrangling and hoops to jump through to get the remains into the U.S. Steve says, “The mortuary director had me sign some papers, and also told me that one of the papers he was giving me allowed me to travel with Mark’s cremated remains over the border into the U.S.” If you prefer to cremate and hand transport remains, you can do so as simply as placing them in your luggage; however, keep in mind you will still need a Mexican death certificate. This can give grieving family the chance to take the deceased home to the U.S. for a service with family and still allow for them to bring the remains back to Baja if they want. While it may be a difficult process to go through, letting the people in your life know your wishes and having all proper paperwork accessible can make life a lot easier on the ones you leave behind.

The combining of talent, business know-how and true passion for life in Baja and food led to four of the right people being in the right place to create a fabulous hot spot called The Sweet Spot.

Naming the establishment proved to be an ordeal when four people had to agree to give the place a unique identity. During one night’s mental jam session to work out such an important detail, Tobie made a suggestion that caused Stephanie to let out an audible groan. Tobie quipped, “I guess that didn’t
The four partners that own and operate the restaurant and bar all have unique talents they have brought to the table. Stephanie acts as all around general manager of the restaurant. Jesus is the artistic chef that lures in the crowds with his original creations, D’Andre operates the bar, and Tobie still contributes to the effort while working in California. D’Andre, a former NFL player with the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers, wanted to retire and has always dreamed of owning a bar. He and Tobi bought the Malecon property in 2003. It remained unused until the quartet filled with talent and passion became complete with the arrival of Stephanie and Jesus in San Felipe in 2005. The ball really got rolling to make the bar/restaurant a reality when the four decided in 2008 to form a partnership to operate the establishment at the Malecon property. They spent 2009 and early 2010 renovating the property,

Jesus, a masterfully artistic chef who isn’t afraid to mix things up a little, had made quite a name for himself through his cuisine. Coming from Cabo, traveling almost everywhere, and working last at his own restaurant in La Paz, Jesus has taken lessons and experiences from each place to bring his award-winning culinary expression to The Sweet Spot. If you are lucky, you will have the chance to savor his signature and most popular dish, rack of lamb that falls off the bone and is saturated in a perfect mixture of herbs. He also serves up pork spare ribs that will leave you drooling, steak, chicken, shrimp and the fish of the day. Jesus takes great liberty with his recipes and changes up his exotic sauce recipes on a moment’s notice. With each new twist on food, comes a staple dish to be relished. His concoctions have won a number of well-deserved awards and he took first place at the San Felipe Shrimp Festival. His mixtures of flavors such as mangos, ginger, jalapeños, and cactus fruit always make for amazing dishes. D’Andre puts the same passion into the bar side of this establishment. Harkening back to his NFL roots, D’Andre has put together a Monday night football league where participants pick the teams before the 17 game schedule starts. There are prizes for winners and lots of great times around the bar when the spectators watch the games with a former player. He plans on adding more prizes and twists to the league next football season. While starting up this business venture has had its share of difficulties. Stephanie points to local support and an increase of local customers as a good sign of things to come.

The bar opens at noon and the kitchen at 1 p.m. During football season, the bar opens at 4 p.m. on Mondays. Every third Sunday, there is a brunch starting at 10 a.m.
