Friend stunned by support for woman in coma Family and friends of Anna Leibenko had raised $38,000 to help the stranded 24-yearold by Wednesday. The Thornhill resident had been travelling in Europe with friends and was due to return this week. But on Aug. 17, she slipped and fell on a catamaran on the Adriatic Sea, hitting her head on the boat and nearly drowning after she fell into the water. Her condition remains critical and she has been in a medically induced coma in a Croatian hospital, her friends and mother by her side.

Making the situation worse was that she had no travel insurance. The cost to fly her home by air ambulance was originally quoted at $93,000, although her brother, Artem Leibenko, says now “there might be a company who can do it a bit cheaper.” Artem, 26, is organizing a trust fund and medical transport for his sister — but the family faces a bill that is a “big lump sum of money” growing larger “every day she is in the hospital,” he said. Two days ago, Leibenko

moved her foot when friend Karina Vottchal held her hand. “I was the happiest person,” she said. When told how much money had already been raised, Vottchal was stunned. “It is so great, we feel so grateful, that we have so many special people in our lives,” she said. “She’s going to pull through.” Several fundraisers are being planned for coming days. People wishing to donate may visit the website: helpanna-leibenko.org.

Applause erupted Wednesday as Annaleise Carr stepped into the Camp Trillium dining hall for the first time since her record swim across Lake Ontario last weekend. That feat, which made her the youngest person ever to swim the classic route across the lake, raised more than $135,000 for the camp, which provides a place for children with cancer to forget about hospitals and tests and have fun. Campers at the camp’s Rainbow Lake location, near Simcoe, Ont., crowded around Carr, giving her hugs and asking for autographs. Her father, Jeff, brought a stack of five-by-seveninch photos and a marker so the doting youths could get a memento of the girl the legendary Marilyn Bell herself dubbed the new “Lady of the Lake.”

brother Josh, 18, and little sister Willow, just 18 months old. It costs about $1,000 to send a child to Camp Trillium for a week, meaning that Carr’s feat will buy a week at camp for at least 135 kids with cancer.

“It’s no longer our best-kept secret,” said Fiona Fisher, fundraising director for the camp. She applauded Carr’s swim not only for raising money but also for putting Camp Trillium in the minds of others planning fundraisers, including Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which has contacted the camp about an event later this year.

The city had numerous complaints about the spa that was owned and operated by Guang Hua Liu, the woman whose body parts were found in Scarborough and Mississauga. The city’s Municipal Licensing and Standards division began investigating Forget Me Not, on Eglinton Ave. E. near Midland Ave., after complaints were received in early July. City officials repeatedly visited the spa, but the doors were locked with no answer. A licensing official finally spoke to Liu on the phone several weeks ago. She said her business was closed and up for sale. “It appears that it was closed more than it was open,” said Coun. Michael Thompson (Ward 37, Scarborough Centre). City officials found nothing illegal going on. But they weren’t the only ones who noticed the spa never seemed open for business. “I never saw anyone get in or get out,” said Jong Soon Suh, owner of a dry cleaning business in the same complex. torstar news service
