F

ounded in the 70’s by Dr. Joseph Dello Russo, New Jersey Eye Center (NJEC) became the first eye care center in New Jersey that treats all eye conditions by offering specialty doctors, an optical shop, the first ASC in the Northeast, and by having cataract surgery as an in-office procedure. Our ambulatory surgical center was the first of its kind and led the way to the spread of outpatient surgery options in other specialties as well. In 1990, the first Dello Russo LaserVision center was opened within the same site in Bergenfield, NJ, specializing in laser vision cor rect ion. Since 2000, t hree addit ional locations were opened to ser ve patients in and around the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island areas.

Laser Vision Correction Center At our New Jersey of fice, all laser vision correction surgeries are performed in an ultra-

modern, 38,000 sq. f t. surgical center by Drs. Joseph and Jef frey Dello Russo. Our professional team is headed up by surgeon and founder, Joseph Dello Russo, M.D., and his son, eye surgeon Jeff Dello Russo, M.D., who carries on his father’s tradition of excellence in patient care and visual outcomes. The multi-disciplinar y practice (NJEC) is rounded out by a cataract surgeon, a glaucoma specialist, a medical retina specialist, staf f optometrists, operating room RNs, and board certified anesthesiologists to offer our patients the most complete care possible. Dello Rus so Laser Vision and T he New Jersey Eye Center have been national leaders in their fields, helping to pioneer most of the leading technologies in use today. Our laser correction center was centrally involved in the FDA trials of the excimer laser during the 90’s that eventually led to the approval of this technology. During that clinical trial period (1991-1996), the of fice of Joseph Dello Russo, M.D. was the most prominent

of the 10 par ticipating centers, per forming more t re at ment s t h a n a ny of t he ot her st udy cont r ibutors. Addit ionally, in 1997 we gained special FDA approval to conduct unique clinical trials to treat higher degrees of ne a r sightedne s s, fa r sightedne s s, a nd ast igmat ism wit h laser vision cor rect ion, leading to eventual FDA approval for these procedures. Not only have the Dello Russo doctors played an integral role in helping to develop, test, and implement these lasers nationwide, but the Lasik practice was also involved with the adoption of the Intralase laser technology. Our office was the first in the United States to use this new laser, offering blade-less Lasik in combination with Dr. Joseph Dello Russo’s pioneering Down-Up Lasik™ technique. Additionally, we were the first practice in the New York area to use Custom Cornea Wavefront technology for primary and secondary treatment, and we have been pleased to offer this important advance in vision correction to our patients. Lenny’s Clam Bar

A landmark Italian restaurant in Queens with the soul of the Ocean

The Largest Globe in the World:

T

he Unisphere is a beautiful, giant steel globe that sits in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York. It is a famous sight in central Queens and is visible to drivers on the LIE, the Grand Central, and Van Wyck, as well as to airline passengers arriving and departing from LaGuardia and JFK. The Unisphere is the best symbol of the borough and also one of the largest globes ever made.

A landmark restaurant T he Unisphere is Q ue en s C ount y ’s biggest landmark...or is it? Lenny’s Clam Bar is a Howard Beach seafood institution, and many would argue a venerable landmark.

Who is Lenny? Joseph DeCandia, was born in Bari, Italy and came to America in 1956 at the age of 18. He took odd jobs as a dishwasher,

a baker and a butcher. In 1958 he took a job at “Lenny’s Pizza” in Brooklyn on 86th Street where he star ted to learn the pizza business. A year later he went to work at “Lenny’s Pizza” on Nostrand Avenue which he later was able to purchase in 1960. In 1969 DeCandia decided to further expand and open “Lenny’s Pizza” on Cross Bay Blvd and 160th Avenue. DeCandia wanted to reach out for even more grow t h a nd in 1973, on a h a nd shake he purchased Er nie’s Bar loc ated at 161-03 Cros s Bay Blvd. He took t his small bar and developed it into “Lenny’s Clam Bar” which opened o n J a n u a r y 11, 1974. Not only clams Seafood lovers, Celebrities and foodies have been descending on the restaurant and just can’t get enough of it’s food and atmosphere.

Real portions for real appetites “Delicious! We ordered the seafood Fra Diavlo with lobster tails,” said Karen from Forrest Hills, “My boyfriend said he felt like it was a “Man vs Food” segment because the por tion was so large. The sauce was sweet and spicy. We also had baked clams and they were cooked to perfection. I can’t wait to go back.” So if you have the urge for some delicious ocean dwelling creatures, cast your rod over at Lenny’s Clam Bar where you are guaranteed a great catch.

1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese 1 pound 90%-lean ground beef 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper Recipe Dir ect ions Preheat grill to medium-high or preheat the broiler. Combine Cheddar and Gruyere in a small bowl. Gently mix beef, Worcestershire, paprika and pepper in a large bowl, preferably with your hands, wit hout over wor k ing. Shape into 8 thin, 4-inch-wide pat ties. Mound 2 tablespoons of the cheese mixture on each of 4 patties, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Cover each with one of the remaining patties. Crimp and seal the edges closed. To grill: Lightly oil the grill rack (see Tip). Grill the stuf fed pat ties over medium-high heat, about 4 minutes per side for mediumwell. (Be sure not to press the burgers as they cook or they’ll split open and the cheese will ooze out.) To broil: Cover a broiler pan with foil and coat with cooking spray. Broil the stuf fed pat ties in the upper third of the oven, about 4 minutes per side for mediumwell. In either case, let the burgers stand for 5 minutes before ser ving. To oil a grill rack: Oil a folded paper towel, hold it with tongs and rub it over the rack. (Do not use cooking spray on a hot grill.)

Linguine with Clam Sauce This is one of those awesome recipes where the sauce cooks while you bring the pasta water to a boil. The linguini gets a final simmer right in the sauce, so all that briny flavor gets right inside the noodles. It’s a surprisingly economical meal -- and a surprisingly kidfriendly one, thanks to all that but ter and garlic, which is really the gateway to seafoodloving, isn’t it? Ser ve it with crust y bread for mopping up any delicious dregs. Ingr edient s 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons but ter 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 shallot, finely chopped (or 1/3 cup finely chopped onion)

Linguine wit h Clam S auce 3 6.5-ounce cans chopped clams, drained, juice reser ved (you should have about 1 1/2 cups of juice) 1/2 cup dr y white wine (or chicken broth, if the wine flavor will trouble your kids) 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup finely chopped parsley Salt to taste Freshly grated parmesan 1 pound of linguini, freshly cooked until just tender (be sure to salt the cooking water well) Dir ect ions Set a large pot of four quarts of water to boil (for the linguine). Salt the water generously. (Add the pasta when the water comes to a boil.) Meanwhile, heat the olive oil and but ter in a Dutch oven over medium heat, then sauté the onions and garlic until sof tened and ver y fragrant — 3 or 4 minutes. Add the reser ved clam juice, the wine or broth, and the Worcestershire sauce, raise the heat, and bring it to a vigorous simmer, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes (while you cook the linguini according to package instructions). Drain the linguine when it’s done al dente — don’t let it overcook to too much softness, as you’ll be simmering it fur ther in the sauce (next step). Taste the sauce for salt, then add the clams, the linguine, and the parsley, and simmer together for 5 minutes, until the sauce is mostly

absorbed and everything tastes fantastic. Ser ve with grated parmesan.

Lemon, Caper and White Bean Pasta Af ter the Holiday season, when bellies are full and wallets are empty, the best solution for meals comes right from your pantr y. This quick dish is light and uses ingredients that are easy to find and usually on-hand. Add a bit of cooked shrimp or grilled chicken with the beans for hear tier fare. Ingr edient s 8 ounces angel hair pasta 1 la rge lemo n, ze s te d a nd juic e d (2 teaspoons zest and 1/4 cup juice) 1 teaspoon garlic pepper 2 Tablespoons capers - rinsed well 1 (15 ounce) can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 3 Tablespoons unsalted but ter Salt to taste Dir ect ions Cook pasta until al dente. Angel hair only takes 4-5 minutes to cook. Drain, set aside and keep warm. Heat butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add lemon juice, zest and garlic pepper. Stir and cook until bubbling. Stir in beans and capers and heat briefly. Salt as desired. Toss with pasta and ser ve.

Countryside Montessori School

C

ountryside Montessori School opened its doors in 1998 in Manhasset, New York, with a Primary classroom of 7 students. We moved to our present location in, Great Neck, in 2001. We currently have two Primary classrooms and two Toddler classrooms with a total of 60 children of diverse cultural backgrounds. Countryside Montessori School follows the Montessori Philosophy. T he Montes sor i Method was established over 100 years ago in Naples, Italy by Dr. Maria Montessori who had a fine abilit y to obser ve children and study their learning process, which she evolved into a unique alternative method of education. Children of different age groups and learning st yles are joined together in a suppor tive communit y, where any correcting that is done is done in a positive way, and movement and activity is always present. Our school of fers an education that me et s t he spe ci f ic ne e ds of young children and helps them develop ways of thinking and solving problems that will stay with them through time. At C ount r y s ide M emo r i a l S c ho ol, children are given the oppor tunit y to discover their personal strengths in a child-centered environment. Furthermore, they develop on their own timetables and each child is known, and is accepted a nd a ppreciated for his or her ow n individuality. Countryside Memorial School believes that: Children have, within them, a natural urge to explore and discover the world around them and find joy in learning when they are actively engaged in the learning

process. Children learn best in an environment of mutual respect and one that provides o p p o r t u n i t i e s fo r c o g n i t i ve, s o c i a l, emotional, moral and physical growth. Heterogeneous and multi-aged grouping prov ide s oppor t uni t ie s for peer teaching, sharing and natural social development. Children internalize concepts and skills at their own pace. Children learn best when competencies are fostered through repetitive successful experiences, and when failures are deemphasized. A multi-sensor y approach maximizes learning because it provides for individual learning st yles.

We are commit ted to the standards of the American Montessori Association and to our founding philosophy. The Montessori School is accredited by the American Montessori Association. We provide full and half day plans as well as after school sessions. Toddlers in diapers are welcome! Please contact Countryside Montessori School for a visit. Our school has a Toddler class (18 month to 3 year-olds) and two Primary classrooms (3 to 6 year-olds) and includes Nursery, Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade. There are after-school programs offered throughout the year. Here at CMS we provide the next generation of children with hours of face-to-face interaction with adults and other children, along with ample opportunity for movement. We model proper behavior in a positive way, providing your child with the best mix of education and social development today in order to become a global citizen of tomorrow.

We cannot create observers by saying ‘observe,’ but by giving them the power and the means for this observation and these means are procured through education of the senses.

The food

The drinks T he mo s t impor t a nt p a r t of t he cocktail par ty is the cocktails. And the most impor tant cock tail of all is the mar tini. Here is a list of Met Living’s favorite mar tinis. The Mar t ini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth, and garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. Over the years, the martini has become one of the best-known mixed alcoholic beverages. Dir t y Mar tini - You won’t need to wash your face after this drink. With the addition of olive juice, this drink has a salty bite to it. You’ll want to stock up on vodka, whiskey, wines and beer. For a more complete bar you can add gin, tequila, rum, bourbon, vermouth, sherry, and brandy.

The beauty of cocktail party food is t hat it c an be a f un, eclect ic selection of items. You c an toss in a few experiments and still have enough safe items so that no one will go home hungry. Offer one or two sweet nib bles toward the end of the par t y. In addition to satisf ying any lurking sweet tooth, it helps to let guests know that the par t y will be wrapping up soon.
