THE DEFINING SHOW FOR LEATHER In 2015, Dubai witnessed the inaugural edition of Leatherworld Middle East, the region’s only dedicated trade show for the world of leather. Over three action-packed days, 2,359 trade visitors from 66 countries discovered the very latest developments, trends and technology. There were 86 reputed exhibitors from 16 countries, showcasing a staggering variety of animal hides, production machinery, chemicals, and stylish products that included leather handbags, footwear, accessories and garments. Luxury was the underlying theme of the show, with a specialised Trend Area being the focus of all eyes, displaying innovations in leather that had never been seen before in the region.
Regional leather market •T he GCC’s US$4.09 billion worth of leather imports and exports in 2014, along with US$1.9 billion worth of manufacturing capabilities, reinforces an ideal backdrop for Leatherworld Middle East to become one of the world’s premier trade and networking platforms. •T he GCC is a leather manufacturing hub; according to EMI, US$1.9 billion worth of dressed leather, luggage, handbags, saddlery, harnesses and footwear were produced in the Gulf region last year, with Saudi Arabia (US$1.1 billion), the UAE (US$468 million), and Qatar (US$250 million) being the region’s big three leather producers. •M arket figures released by analysts Euromonitor International show that the MEA small leather luxury goods market (wallets, purses, card holders, and other accessories) was valued at US$270.7 million in 2014, and is growing by 13.7% annually to reach US$453.5 million by 2018.

We are a shoe manufacturer in Ajman, so we usually have to travel to all the big leather shows in Europe to source the leather, machinery, accessories and soles that go into manufacturing our shoes. We already have three suppliers exhibiting at Leatherworld Middle East and now we will probably find more – the best thing is that we can source all our needs here in the UAE without having to travel too far.
It was really educational and I was able to learn about the different kinds of leather and what applications they are used for, which as an interior designer, is very important. In one day I’ve sourced about seven suppliers and there’s no minimum spend so they are very flexible. I will definitely return next year. All designers should live at the show during its three days.
