MUSIC MUS 108. INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC TECHNOLOGY This course is designed to give the musician and educator an introduction to commonly used technologies. Included will be experiences with music notation and sequencing, basic web design, the internet, power point, digital recording, and basic video editing. The course is constructed to provide practical hands-on experiences, and the final project will result in a CD based web site containing each of the course’s unit assignments. 1 credit. MUS 110. INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC EDUCATION This fundamental course is important to introduce the music education majors to the history and development of music education, specifically in the public school system. Various methods and experiences in both the elementary and secondary schools will be discussed. Requires concurrent enrollment in MUS 120, MUSIC EDUCATION LABORATORY. 3 credits. MUS 140, LARGE ENSEMBLE 240, 340, (CHORAL/INSTRUMENTAL) 440. A four-year participation in choral or instrumental ensembles. Students learn and perform selected literature for programs on campus and in the community. Open to all Mercyhurst students by audition. Required (four years) for all music majors. (No tuition charge for these credits.) 1 credit per term. MUS 145, SMALL ENSEMBLE (CHORAL, 245, 345, INSTRUMENTAL, COMPOSERS 445. AND OPERA WORKSHOP) A four-year participation in vocal and instrumental music, or the study of contemporary repertoire for composers. Instrumental small ensembles include Chamber Winds, woodwind, brass, string, jazz, percussion, and guitar. (No tuition charge for these credits.) 2 credits (per year). MUS 145, PIANO SMALL ENSEMBLE 245, 345, 445. A four-year participation in piano accompanying. Students learn and perform selected literature for programs by accompanying and working with specifically assigned vocal and instrumental students. They learn the vocal, brass, woodwind, and string literature that involves piano. (No tuition charge for these credits.) 2 credits (per year). MUS 150, SECONDARY PIANO 250, 350, 450 (10 13). A four-year course of individual instruction with emphasis on the thorough development of musicianship, technique, style, interpretation and repertoire. 1 credit (per term). MUS 150, CLASS PIANO 250 (30-32). A two-year course of class instruction with emphasis on the development of functional piano skills (piano proficiency). 1 credit (per term).

MUS 151, PIANO (APPLIED) 251, 351, 451. A four-year course of individual instruction with emphasis on the thorough development of musicianship, technique, style, interpretation and repertoire. 1-2 credits (per term). MUS 155, 255. ACCOMPANYING Structured learning of the assigned accompanying repertoire including vocal and instrumental literature. Participation in lessons and guided performing experiences. 1 credit (per term). MUS 160, VOICE (APPLIED) 260, 360, 460. A four-year course of individual instruction with emphasis on the thorough development of musicianship, technique, style, interpretation and repertoire. Credits determined by student’s degree program. 1-2 credits (per term). MUS 170- INSTRUMENTAL (APPLIED) 175, 270-275, 370-375, 470-475. A four-year course of individual instruction with emphasis on the thorough development of musicianship, technique, style, interpretation and repertoire. Credits determined by student’s degree program. 1-2 credits (per term). MUS 180, COMPOSITION (APPLIED) 280, 380, 480. Course offers individual instruction with emphasis on the thorough development of compositional creativity and techniques. 1-2 credits (per term). MUS 190, ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT 290, 390, 490. This is a requirement of all music majors. 0 credit. MUS 195, INDEPENDENT STUDY 295, 395, 495. Independent studies in music allow students to pursue knowledge in an area of special interest not covered in the curriculum. Independent studies cannot be used to replace any required course in the music curriculum or the Liberal Arts Core. The Chair of the Department of Music and the Vice-President of Academic Affairs must grant permission for independent studies. 1-3 credits.

MUSIC stress historical development from its African origins through the new experimental trends with emphasis given to major figures in both big band and small ensemble. Prerequisite: MUS 206. 2 credits. MUS 205. MUSIC HISTORY ORCHESTRAL MUSIC Presents a broad overview of the development of compositional styles of the major orchestral composers of the Baroque period through the twentieth century. The forms of composition emphasized will be the symphony, concerto, symphonic poem and overture. It includes the development of the orchestra as it pertains to size and instrumentation in each period. Prerequisite: Majors or permission of instructor. 2 credits. MUS 206. MUSIC HISTORY OPERA/ CHAMBER MUSIC An overview of the development of opera in music history. After five weeks, the same overview will be taught concerning the chamber music literature. 2 credits. MUS 208. World Music and Cultures Designed to broaden the student’s knowledge and appreciation of non-Western musics, with emphasis on representative works from the world’s major cultures. 2 credits. MUS 220. MUSIC EDUCATION LABORATORY Required 3rd term freshmen and all three sophomore year terms for music education majors. 0 credits. MUS 304, 305, 306. FORM AND ANALYSIS Development of the traditional techniques of musical form and structure. Prerequisite: MUS 203. 1 credit (per term). MUS 281. DICTION FOR SINGERS Study of components of spoken language, including IPA, characteristics of accent, intonation, etc. Practice in oral presentations and transcriptions. 1 credit (per term). MUS 307, INSTRUMENTAL LITERATURE 308, 309. AND MATERIALS A study of instrumental materials in various media depending on applied major instrument. 1 credit (per term).

MUS 201, THEORY II 202, 203 (01). Continuation of harmonic practice including modulation, broadening of harmonic vocabulary, and structural analysis. Prerequisite: MUS 103-01. 2 credits (per term).

MUS 310, PIANO PEDAGOGY 311, 312. Designed to provide the student with materials and approaches to piano teaching from primary to advanced levels. Teaching method used will be lectures, demonstrations and research. 1 credit (per term).

MUS 201, SOLFEGGIO II 202, 203 (02). Continuation of aural recognition of chord sonorities and harmonic dictation. Prerequisite: MUS 103-02. 1 credit (per term).

MUS 320. JUNIOR MUSIC EDUCATION SEMINAR Required course for all junior music education majors. 0-1 credit.
