WRITING TO LEARN

The English Department supports the Mercyhurst Writing to Learn Program by having students in all English courses engage in written exercises, demonstrate comprehension of subject content through written examination, and present written assignments in partial fulfillment of course requirements.

ENGLISH MAJOR

The English Department constitutes a major humanizing force within the College. Through its focus on writing and composition, it fosters effective use of language for good communication. Through its teaching of literature, both early and modern, it promotes deeper understanding of the human experience. Thus, all students, along with English majors and minors, take College Writing and Western or World Classics. The English program, moreover, prepares students for the professions and for advanced study. The Creative Writing concentration better prepares the student for the field of literary publication. The English Education major prepares the student for a career in secondary education. The minor programs in English and writing complement many other majors at the College. The Department also sponsors the Mercyhurst Literary Festival and Lumen, the campus arts journal. Developed by students, its aim is to showcase faculty and student work. The Writing Center, located in the library, provides assistance to all students.
