THE JOHNSON EFFECT • Most of the talk coming into 2012-13 was how junior college transfer Geron Johnson was going to help the Tigers offensively. • However, while his offense will eventually come, it’s Johnson’s defense that has helped Memphis early on.

• Johnson had to sit out the Tigers’ first three games due to an NCAA-imposed suspension, but has seen action in the last three contests. • The following shows the defensive improvement with Johnson on the floor: Without Johnson Stat With Johnson 44.3 Opp. FG Pct. 38.7 44.4 Opp. 3-Pt. FG Pct. 33.9 +4.4 Rebound Margin +5.0 JOHNSON NCAA-IMPOSED SUSPENSION OVER; TIGERS GUARD BACK IN ACTION • Geron Johnson is back in action after serving an NCAA-imposed, three-game suspension to start the 2012-13 campaign. Johnson was held out of the Nov. 12 North Florida, Nov. 17 Samford and Nov. 22 VCU contests. • The NCAA sanction was the result of extra benefits received by Johnson from a family friend who assisted the family with his educational expenses prior to his enrollment at the University of Memphis. • In his three games of action, Johnson averaged 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals in 19.3 minutes. • The 6-foot-3 guard came up big late in the Northern Iowa win. With the Tigers clinging to a 45-41 lead, Johnson’s steal led to a Joe Jackson three-point play to push the advantage to 48-41 with only :35 on the clock. DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE • Freshman Shaq Goodwin posted the Tigers’ second double-double of 2012-13 with his 17-point, 12-board performance versus UT Martin Nov. 29. • The following tracks Memphis’ double-doubles this season: Player/Opponent Dbl-Dbl Goodwin/UT Martin...............................17-12 Crawford/Northern Iowa........................18-12 SHAQ ON THE GLASS • Freshman Shaq Goodwin had his first doubledigit rebounding game Nov. 29 versus UT Martin (12 rebounds). • The 12 boards were the most by a Tigers freshman since Kareem Cooper pulled down 13 rebounds versus Southern Miss on Feb. 14, 2006. A MEMPHIS STARTING FIVE • For the first time in over 20 years, the Tigers put a starting five on the floor all from the city of Memphis in their Nov. 12 season opener. • The starting five from the Bluff City were Tarik Black, Chris Crawford, Ferrakohn Hall, Joe Jackson and Adonis Thomas in Memphis’ Nov. 12 game versus North Florida.
