THANK YOU

When we were approached with the idea and concept of "GlobeMed," we really had no idea what to expect. We put all of our faith into the possibilities and potential that we saw in this organization, and leaped wholeheartedly into a journey that has immensely changed us both and opened our eyes to things we had never expected. We became part of the incredible social movement that GlobeMed stands for, and never looked back. There is something incredibly inspirational about a group of young students and recent graduates that have a passion for improving and advancing not only the world around them, but making the world as a whole a more equitable place to live. This feeling and understanding is impossible to replicate, or accurately describe, unless you become a part of GlobeMed, and the strides we have made even since joining the network in the Spring of 2010 are innumerable. In just two short semesters, we have made a name for ourselves on campus, struck up conversations with strangers about "The GlobeMed Model," attracted a diverse and committed group of students to raise a greater awareness about global health on our campus, and devoted ourselves to our partner, Minga-Peru. Minga-Peru is an organization that empowers women throughout the Amazon region of Peru and builds families with a greater understanding and education about family planning, reproductive health, and gender equity. With only approximately twenty staff members in our first year, we managed to raise nearly $4,000 for our partner, and are more than confident that we can greatly surpass this amount in the upcoming year. In solidarity, Anja Frost and Ashley Sharp 2010-2011 Co-Presidents

ABOUT US

GlobeMed at Georgetown University The GlobeMed chapter at Georgetown was founded in 2010 by Anja Frost, a rising senior, Biology of Global Health major. The partnership with MingaPeru was formed shortly after. Our chapter consists of a nine-member executive board, and approximately twenty member staff. The Globemed chapter at Georgetown raised over $4,000 in its first year with five major events, online fundraising, and individual giving. The first GROW trip is scheduled for the summer of 2012 and we hope to send 2-3 students to Loreto, Peru.

since our founding in April 2010 , our chapter has grown from to members.

MINGA PERU [WORKS IN LORETO, PERU] POPULATION: 884,144

KEY FACT: Since 1998, MingaPeru has worked to address the detrimental situation in the Amazon though a successful radio program that currently reaches 120,000 listeners.

Located in the isolated, impoverished Peruvian Amazon Jungle, Minga-Peru serves a population, particularly women, who have suffered from poverty, sanitation problems, limited healthcare, misogyny, domestic violence, and epidemics affecting reproductive and overall health. A short ten years ago, women rarely left their communities in the Peruvian amazon, largely due to the patriarchal social structures in the region and the difficulty in transportation. Furthermore, very few girls attended school, gender-based violence was commonplace, and there was minimal spacing between births within families. These conditions were detrimental to women’s health, and the lack of education, particularly for women, only aggravated the problem.

2010 – 2011 Annual Report

OUR PARTNER

[About Minga Peru] FOUNDED IN 1998 Minga-Peru was founded as a non-profit organization to promote social justice and human dignity in the rural communities of the Peruvian Amazon. Meaning “collaborative community work” in the indigenous language of Quechua, Minga has built collaborative communiites to improve the quality of life for women in the rural Peruvian rainforest. In particular, Minga’s 20 minute radio show, Bienvenda Salud, broadcast throughout the Amazon Jungle, serves to educate indigenous Amazonians on multitudinous health-related topics including sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, sanitation, family planning, gender equity, and domestic violence. In addition to the radio show, MingaPeru also hosts leadership/education workshops for women promotoras “community promoters” or “grassroots leaders” who carry positive messages back to their community. Finally, Minga-Peru trains teachers who work in rural schools to integrate issues of domestic violence and HIV/AIDS into their curriculum. GlobeMed’s formal partnership with MingaPeru, through the Georgetown University chapter, began during the 2010-2011 academic year. Georgetown University, in collaboration with Minga-Peru, established a goal to raise $1,500 USD for sanitation and general upkeep of the health training promotion center, “Casa Minga.”

[Why women’s empowerment?] In an environment distraught with poverty, limited healthcare, and gender-based violence, focusing on women’s empowerment can have broad, pronounced effects. While the focus does not exclude men, empowering women to become leaders in their community serves to promote gender equity and reduce domestic violence. By collaborating with their husbands and brothers, women can educate their families about the importance of family planning and reproductive health, as well as basic health practices such as sanitation and proper nutrition.

2010 – 2011 Annual Report

OUR PROJECT

Supporting the restoration of Tambo Minga, a second health training promotion center in Peru. Over the course of the 2011-2012 school year, GlobeMed at Georgetown aims to raise money to fund the restoration of Tambo Minga, a second health training promotion center in Peru. Specifically, the money we raise will allow for running water, a working kitchen including a refrigerator and a gas cooker, adequate mosquito netting for the dining area, and air conditioning in the dormitory at Tambo Minga. During the 2010-2011 school year, GlobeMed at Georgetown raised $3,875 dollars to fund the sanitation and general upkeep of “Casa Minga,” the health training promotion center in Iquitos, Peru. In allowing for the sanitation and everyday maintenance of Minga’s central training center, this money will positively affect everyone who works at, or temporarily resides in, Casa Minga as it will be a more hygienic, functional space.

EVENTS

07 TOPICS The GlobalHealthU portion of GlobeMed was led by Anna Trakhtenberg and Kate Canty. It provided an opportunity to gain insight into a range of topics affecting global health. Once a week, Anna and Kate would lead a discussion for the entire GlobeMed staff that followed the globalhealthU curriculum laid out by the National Office. During this time we all had a chance to discuss and debate our views on topics ranging from mental health to LGBTQ issues. The World Day of Social Justice, was particularly important in gaining recognition on campus, and increasing the awareness of Georgetown students and faculty of the importance of protecting human rights and freedoms globally.

COMMUNITY BUILDING Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

20 # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: 01 TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS:

As this was the founding year for GlobeMed at Georgetown, we were not able focus as heavily on community building as we hope to in the upcoming year. Instead, we prioritized making a name for ourselves on campus, and focused on executing successful campaigns in order to reach our target fundraising goal to be able to support our partner, Minga-Peru. In the upcoming year, however, we hope to be able to participate in local service projects, specifically involving women's empowerment, to align with the goals of Minga-Peru. We hope to encourage solidarity among members through these service projects, and through social events such as a potluck as well!

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

GLOBEMED AT GEORGETOWN joined 31 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 3rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2011, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. OUR QUESTION: [Everyone deserves ____.]

Everyone deserves

__________.

BEHIND THE SCENES: We chose the "everyone deserves" question because we felt that it would provide a great opportunity for the Georgetown student body to reflect on the small pleasures that they may have the opportunity to enjoy every day, but that might not be the reality for others. By someone answering "water," for example- we were able to share that many people in indigenous populations do not have access, or have limited access, to fresh water supplies. We felt the question was provocative and humbling.

MORE WDSJ ACTION ----------------------------------Statistic posted in public forum: In a location that we knew Georgetown students would pass daily, we posted a statistic that we thought would catch the community's attention. The statistic was that "half the world lives on less than $3 a day, that’s about the cost of 3 minutes in class at Georgetown." We felt that making the statistic relevant to what students may take advantage of every day, would spark some interest and thought.

WE ASKED OVER 25 PEOPLE AT GEORGETOWN.

HERE’S HOW THEY RESPONDED >>

2011 DELEGATES: Anja Frost, Perry Rogers, Ashley Sharp, Anna Trakhtenberg

"The conference was an amazing opportunity to meet the rest of the community. It was great to meet other groups who had well established chapters and hear about the awareness events they had put on to make GlobeMed a recognized club at their school. Hopefully we can incorporate some of their ideas as we move into our second year."

"There are a lot of passionate and driven people in our chapter and they have given me hope that we can and will make an impact on Minga-Peru.“ – Rocky Ferrandino, c/o 2011

Led by an impassioned group of students, GlobeMed at Georgetown University is eager and energized to begin the 2011-2012 school year. With a year of experience under our belt, we to hope galvanize the GlobeMed community at Georgetown to fight the inequities faced throughout the world, and particularly the inequities faced by the individuals in the indiginous Amazon region of Peru. Beyond the Georgetown gates, we hope to both intensify our publicity in order into increase support, and reach out to local organizations also supporting women’s empowerment to build relationships with local residents and advance GlobeMed’s mission. Furthermore, we are currently in the process of planning various campaigns for the Fall, as well as community-wide events with a focus on global health education. Finally, we seek to strengthen our relationship with Minga-Peru, in order to respond humanely and most efficiently to the challenges they are facing.

As always, we would be extraordinarily grateful for any and all donations to GlobeMed at Georgetown University. Please note that 100% of our profits are given to Minga-Peru. Donations can be made online, through our razoo page at http://www.razoo.com/story/Globe-Med-AtGeorgetown
